Around the World in Songs

18 February 2018

An evening in Paris

Today everyone has a nephew into software who works on-site in the US or Europe. But there was a time when ‘people like us’ did not travel to foreign lands. Today, there is hardly a film which does not have some song-dance sequence, if not most of the film, shot abroad. Bollywood is an important promoter of tourism to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Switzerland. The main attraction of Mount Titlis is to get yourself photographed with the cardboard cut-out of Shahrukh Khan and Kajol.

Back in the 1960s and before, if a film was shot abroad, that was its USP. I do not know which was the first Hindi film to be shot abroad, but Sangam’s main marketing plank was its extensive scenes of Europe. When foreign travel was a rarity, our film songs gave us a vicarious trip to cities around the world. Some songs with the names of foreign cities were shot in those cities. Still earlier, the cities’ names occurred in the songs performed as stage dance, signifying the attraction for the unattainable, given our stringent controls and quotas of foreign exchange.

After the two-part Bharat Darshan, I bring the trilogy of city songs to a close with a trip around the world through our film songs.

1. Duniya ki sair kar lo…Around the world in eight dollars by Mukesh & Sharda from Around the World (1967), music Shankar-Jaikishan

This is a quintessential touristy song. To justify the name of the film, Raj Kapoor takes us on a whirlwind tour of the US and Europe, touching Los Angeles, Las Vegas-Grand Canyon, San Francisco, Washington DC, London and Paris. He must have spent a ton for this, it was not for nothing that he was called a Showman. If you are not likely to visit these cities, watching Around the World can be a good substitute.

2. Aji aisa mauka phir kahan milega, dekho dekho dekho dekho, an evening in Paris by Rafi from An Evening in Paris (1967), music Shankar-Jaikishan

Shammi Kapoor is quite brazen in offering the Parisian girls to show them around the sights of Paris in the evening. His ebullience is not constrained by the overcoat and the hat.

3. Le gayi dil, Gudiya Japan ki, pagal mujhe kar diya by Rafi from Love in Tokyo (1966), lyrics Hasrat Jaipuri, music Shankar-Jaikishan

SJ had already created a Tokyo song a year earlier, which must have become the inspiration for the Paris song. SJ in this phase made Rafi do vocal acrobatics, but they came up with a hit song nevertheless. Joy Mukherjee managed some succesful movies to his belt doing a Shammi Kapoor.

4. Poora London thumakada by Labh Janjua, Sonu Kakkad and Neha Kakkad from Queen (2014), lyrics Anvita Dutt, music Amit Trivedi

For the Punjabi diaspora, Southall is an extension of Ludhiana. When they perform bhangra they aim to shake the whole London, nothing less.

5. London dekha, Paris dekha or dekha Japan..Ye duniya ek dulhan by Hariharan, Kavita Krishnamoorthy & Aditya from Pardes (1997), music Nadeem-Shravan

By the late 1990s, there was a reverse romance for the homeland. A whole genre of films was made for NRI audience catering to this yearning. After having seen Landon, Paris and all, the diaspora still loves ‘my India’.

6. London Paris ghoom ke dekhe by Mukesh & Usha Timothy from Parivaar (1967), lyrics Gulshan Bawra, music Kalyanji Anandji

This is the precursor of London dekha, Paris dekha. After having seen all these places the hero loses his heart to a Dilliwali girl.

7. Hong Kong china mina Singapore by Asha Bhosle from Hong Kong (1962), lyrics Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, music OP Nayyar

Picturised on Helen as a beach dance song. Music by OP Nayyar makes the complete package a treat.

8. Mere piya gaye Rangoon by Chitalkar and Shamshad Begum from Patanga (1949), lyric Rajendra Krishna, music C Ramchandra

In this song no one went to Rangoon. Picturised as a stage dance song on Gope and Nigar Sultana, it has become an iconic city-song. C Ramchandra, both as a music director and singer (when he assumed the name Chitalkar), was a master of such frothy light-hearted songs.

9. Chalo Honolulu, Honolulu ki sair karaunga by by a male voice & Shamshad Begum from Sanam (1951), lyrics Qamar Jalalabadi, music Husnlal-Bhagatram

Gope has the honour again to have a lovely song picturized on him. He does his comic act on the piano with abandon, Meena Kumari plays along; but the sulking Suraiya is not amused. She relents by the end of the song, and cannot help herself smiling.

10. Ek din Lahore ki thandi sadak par shaam ko ja rahe the by Chitalkar, Rafi and Shamshad Begum from Sagai (1951), lyrics Rajendra Krishna, music C Ramchandra

This was a repeat of the main Patanga team. Gope-Yaqub pair was a laugh riot. C Ramchandra reveled in scoring for such rip-roaring comedies.

11. Chalo ho gayi tayyar by Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar from Shadi Se Pahle (1947), lyrics Mukhram Sharma, music Ramakant Paigankar and Karnaad

When she asks for a nice pair of slippers, he promises to get her sandals from London; when she asks for a nice sari, he promises her a gown from Paris and so on. Promising the moon is a nice way for deflecting from the earthly demands. But this is a fantastic comic song. It is supposed to be the first duet of Rafi & Lata Mangehskar, but Lata’s voice is surprisingly mature, more like she was in the early 1950s.

Did you just miss Madhu’s post? 🙂

2 AK February 18, 2018 at 10:02 am

Anu,
I saw it last night. A very nice post. By that time I had scheduled this one.

P.S.
It would have been great had you, too, written on this theme about the same time. We know it has been on your anvil. I hope we are going to see it soon.

3 Subodh Agrawal February 18, 2018 at 10:35 am

One quick addition: ‘Meri lottery lag jaane wali hai’. At 1.58 the second stanza begins with “Mulkon mein ek mulk suna hai, mulk suna hai Amreeka; Amreeka me shaadi ho aur honeymoon Africa.” I remember the song from younger days but this is the first time I say the video, and I was disappointed. I had always imagined Kishore himself on the screen.

We may add: ” Yeh sheher bada albela, Har taraf haseenon ka mela” from ‘Singapore’. 1960 Music: S-J. Mukesh.

5 Mehfil Mein Meri February 18, 2018 at 11:33 am

Akji,
A wonderful post indeed.
A couple of days back, dusted off published similar post.
But it was a delightful to read this post as well.
As u have suggested Anuji’s post is awaited. 🙂

To add a song
Tu ladka hai Landon ka from Chand ka tukda

And of course Kabul fiza from
Kabul Express

7 AK February 18, 2018 at 12:14 pm

Subodh,
If you close your eyes, Meri lottery nikalnewali hai is a perfect Kishore song on the screen. The thought is interesting – marriage in America and honeymoon in Africa, two extrems?

NS Rajan,
Nice song Ye shahar bada albela. The city Singapore comes in chorus, but the film had some more songs with direct references to Singapore and other cities.

Anup,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. The London boy has to claim his heart is Hindustani to win over the girl. Very patriotic 🙂 The Kabul song is very nicely picturised, I don’t know whether it was really picturised in Afghanistan.

8 Mehfil Mein Meri February 18, 2018 at 5:13 pm

yes,
Very patriotic
🙂
I Have heard the movie was really shot in Afghanistan.
John Abraham told so in one of the interviews, I think!
But I’m not sure.

9 ravindra sharma February 18, 2018 at 6:43 pm

There is a song ‘Night in London’ by Mohd. Rafi in a movie by the same name.

10 Shalan Lal February 18, 2018 at 7:46 pm

With reference to the introduction to the post “Around the world in songs” in the paragraph number two AK says ” I do not know which was the first Hindi film to be shot abroad,”

I take it “Hindi” as Indian.

The following films were made by Himanshu Rai the founder of the Bombay Talkies Film Company :

• 4) Karma (1933)
• 3) Prapancha Pash (1929) / A Throw of Dice
• 2) Shiraz (1928)
• 1) Prem Sanyas (1925) / Light of Asia

The first three had Indian subjects but made in English but were silent films. All the three were made in Munich Germany

The fourth was “Karma” was in English and had a kiss and was a talkie and made in London. The passionate kiss of Himanshu on the lips of Devika Raani and her perfect English accent became the talk of the town among the English people.

Devika Raani was Tagore’s grand daughter and first actor trained by Rada (Royal Academy Of Arts (Theatre Training)
No songs but very good Indian and western music were used to embellish the scenes.

11 BALASUBRAMANYAM February 18, 2018 at 7:51 pm

There is a song in PARIVAR 1967 sung by Mukesh& Kamal Barot LONDON PARIS GHOOMKE DEKHE filmed on Rajendranath.

12 Dustedoff February 18, 2018 at 9:20 pm

Nice list, AK! And one song that was new to me – the Shaadi se Pehle one. Good song!

Besides the obvious ones – the ones that were in my post – here’s one that mentions London and Paris in the stanzas: Aana meri jaan Sunday ke Sunday.

13 Arunkumar Deshmukh February 18, 2018 at 9:47 pm

AK ji,

As expected, this post is most appropriate, after Metros.
There may be dozens of songs,in this group.
You said, you do not know about the First Hindi film shot abroad.
As per HFGK, film Naaz-54 was the first such film, but this is not true.
The first hindi film to be shot abroad was ” India in Africa’ aka ‘ Africa mein India’-1939. The hero Babasaheb Nandrekar went to Africa for the outdoor shooting of this film. This is mentioned by Isak mujawar in the book ” Maharashtra-the Birthplace of Indian Film Industry”.

Madhu’s post was exhaustive; you’ve covered most of the rest of the songs. What will I write on? 🙂 I’ve ditched posts before because either you or Madhu or Harvey (earlier) had already posted on the same themes.

15 Ashwin Bhandarkar February 18, 2018 at 10:25 pm

Here is a song listed as ‘O raat milan ki, dil hai pyaasa’; ‘Mombasa’ would have been more apt:

‘O raat milan ki’ from Sargam (Lata-Chitalkar/C.Ramchandra/P.L.Santoshi)

‘Telephone dhun mein’ from ‘Hindustani’ (Hariharan-Kavita Krishnamurthy/A.R.Rahman/P.K.Mishra) was shot in Australia and mentions Melbourne:

Ak ji , Nice sequel to the Travel show songs . I remember when we were young we used to tap some pundit ji to read our hands asking if there is any chance of us visiting London or America. Those of us getting affirmative answers were generous to pay pundit ji .

Well, the scenarios has completely changed . As you said , some one out there in your family is working abroad and you are the regular frequent traveler , some enjoying , some looking after grand children and some tired of visiting again and again ….getting bored too! But for the real lover of nature , countryside living and national parks are the gardens of the real heaven . Add background music to it and enjoy the best of both world .

Sangam had many scenes which were shot in different countries and so was ….An Evening in Paris . Shanker Jaikishan were pioneer in giving the background music keeping the particular country in mind . You can hear French café music in scenes shot in paris and hear swiss harmonica music for scenes shot in Switzerland . It is a treat to hear SJ’s background music in Sangam and An evening in Paris . It gives me pain when other MDs are not following this simple code . No one can bear the sound of dholak and table for a song picturised in London near thames river.

As a starter here is Lata ji’s very different rendition ….

Dekhoji Dekho Suno ek baat , zindgi mein aana ek bar Singapore……

…..to be contd.

Shalan Lal @10
Reconciling with what Arunji says @13, I think the films you have mentioned were shot at location in India but were processed in the labs abroad.

Balasubramanyam,
Welcome to SoY. I have included London Paris groom ke dekhe at #6 from Parivar in my post.

Madhu,
Thanks a lot and thanks for reminding me that London, Paris. were mentioned in Ana Meri Jaan.

Arunji,
Thanks a lot for this information. You must have seen Shalan Lal’s comments at #10.

25 AK February 19, 2018 at 12:30 am

Ashwin,
Mombasa, Melbourne, Kabul – Nice additions. To cap it all ‘New York, New York’ with superb scenes of the city. Thanks a lot for these additions.

KS Bhatiaji,
You have taken us to a nice sightseeing. Zindagi mein ek baar ana Singapore is a very pretty song. SJ’s orchestration does give a local feel, as you have highlighted it as an SJ’s speciality. Thanks a lot.

26 Arunkumar Deshmukh February 19, 2018 at 10:29 am

AK ji,
Before writing my comment, I had gone through ALL other comments.
The silent films mentioned by Shalan ji were not made in India. Secondly, a silent film has no Language, so they can not be said to be Hindi films. They were not shot abroad, they were completely made in other countries.
What you had in mind, I suppose, was an India made Hindi film, having been shot partly in other countries.
For the above reasons, I did not comment on her statements and gave you the relevant information.

Akji,
Namaskar. Back after a long layoff. Hai everybody.

I could not join you on your Bharat Darshan tours of small towns and then the metros. At least let me be on board now. Hope a tour around the world with all of you would help me get back into groove fast.

Interesting to note that Madhuji too had done a post on the same theme a couple of days earlier.

Here are a few songs on Kathmandu. The first one was posted by Madhuji in her article. It is a typical Kishore Kumar song. This song also mentions Timbaktu, a City in Mali.

ge ge ge gele zara timbaktu, kaathamadu kaathamadu balle hu by Kishore Kumar, film Jhumroo (1961), lyrics Kishore Kumar, music Kishore kumar
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qq7Z1ftlAYo

Chal Chal Re Kathmandu by Kishore Kumar, film Ram Bharose (1977), lyrics Hasrat Jaipuri, music Ravindra Jain

Here are two more. The first one is on Hong Kong. It mentions London and Penang towards the end.
“isake aage kya hai london, peris aur pinaang”

Ye Hai Hongkong by Asha Bhosle, film Lambu in Hongkong (1967), lyrics Qamar Jalalabadi, music C Arjun
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agm-YBWK-M0

Honolulu Se Aai by Usha Timothy, film Khanjar (1979) lyrics Maya Govind, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6x8lOifKPo

30 AK February 19, 2018 at 5:05 pm

Venkataramanji,
Welcome back to SoY. Ge ge ge gele is a fabulous song. We do travel to Kathmandu, but hardly anyone goes to Timbaktu. The other Kathmandu song picturised on Govinda was new to me, he always brings life to the songs.

Ye hai Hong Kong is quite interesting. These days when Indians have become global tourists, people must be familiar with Penang, but I doubt it would have been a familiar name those days.

It is interesting Honolulu is occurring in our songs with such regularity. The charm must have been in the name.

31 Shalan Lal February 19, 2018 at 5:38 pm

Arunkumar D @26 & AK @27

Thanks for accepting the truth about the information.

The films had English script printed above the scenes as the fashion of the silent films. When the films wee shown in Germany the scripts were in German language.

I think with some efforts you may dug out these films to see. Most of these films have been entered into many films’ festivals around the world.

However we are not in business to decide “Who’s I First, who’s Second etc.” There is a famous comic barter in one of the films of “Bud Abbott & Lou Costello”. KSBhatia probably know this comic genre.

I am quoting three songs from Doctor Kotnis Ki Amar Khahani 1946 though the film was made at Rajkamal by V .Shantaram and not outside but the feel of China was very nicely created.

1) Pardesi Re (2) Kahe Chhoda Des Mera, Sawan Ayaa sung by Zeenat Beghum
2) Nai Dulhan (2) Mai Hun Nai Dulhan sung by Jayashri
3) Chal Jaa Ghulami Nahin (Based on a Chines Tune called Chinai) Chorus song Jayshri, Vasnat Desai and others.

Shalan

Music by Vasant Desai and Lyrics by Deewan Sharar.

32 Shalan Lal February 19, 2018 at 5:55 pm

I quote three songs from the film “Saragam” 1950. This film might have given idea for RK about the film Sangam and other with Around the world with Ten Dollars etc.

1) Haan Mai Hun Ek Khalasi Chitalkar
2) Mausamein Bhar Yaar, Lata
3) Yaa Bibi Sakayia Cjitalkar and chorus
Music by C.Ramchandra, Lyrics by Pt. Santoshi

The following song takes us through several places in Uzbekistan/ Central Asia. Samarkand, Yarkand, Kashkant, Tashkent, Bukhara, Tehran and Yunan too

Samarkand ke yaarkand by Lata Mageshkar and Sudha Malhotra, film Changez Khan (1957), lyrics Verma Malik, music Hansraj Be

Meraa Naam Chin Chin Chu by Geeta Dutt, film Howrah Bridge (1958), lyrics Qamar Jalalabadi, music O P Nayyar

“baabuji mai chin se aai chini jaisaa dil laai
sigaapur kaa yauvan meraa shaanghaai ki angadaai”

34 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty February 19, 2018 at 7:52 pm

The 1998 Jeans, though dubbed from Tamil, will qualify because the music was redone. A R Rehman,Javed Akhtar team gave some good tunes. The Ajooba song , Hariharan, Sadhana Sargam and chorus was shot on location at the 7 wonders of the world..The Great walls of China,Eiffel tower, Empire State building,Taj Mahal,The great Pyramids,Roman Colloeum and The Leaning Tower of Pisa. The hero Prashanth sings out that heroine Aishwarya Rai is no less a wonder, the eighth wonder in his eyes.
A pleasant song, well picturised.
The film also has a Sonu Nigam,A R Rehman and chorus number, Columbus, Columbus, chutti hai aayi. Weird rhyming words chutti, chutti, chutti…(koyee leher dil mein) utti!

35 AK February 19, 2018 at 8:39 pm

Shalan,
‘Sargam’ to ‘Sangam’ connection not clear. In ‘Sangam’ foreign locations were incidental. The theme was quintessential love triangle, like ‘Andaz’ (1949).

Venkataramanji,
Samarkand ke Yaarkan was a very nice addition. Thanks.

Dr Shetty,
The 7-wonder song is very nicely picturised. Aishwarya transforms according to the country. The names of cities/places do not seem to have been mentioned. However it is a perfect ‘Around the world’ song. There could be a separate category of songs which give a good world tour, though they not mention the name of the cities.

You say Raj Kapoor must have spent a ton for Around TheWorld. But, isn’t it the producer/director Pachhi, who would have done that?
Around The World was the first CinemaScope movie, and the second, Sholay came much later.
Interestingly, International Crook, from the same Producer/Director_composer team( Pachhi_ Shankar Jaikishan) has a Sharda number Husn e Iran, picturised on a belly dancer. Mentioning it only because it has Iran in the lyrics!
Let us see how many of us recall details about Pachhi, the man behind the very first offering of this article. I have heard many people giving the credits to RK and being totally unaware of the producer/ director.

Sat Sri Akaal Bhatiaji. I am glad to be back among familiar company.
Thanks for the warm welcome, Akji and Bhatia

Let me add one more song, a very recent one.

The song “Mere Miyan Gaye England’, I understand, is supposed to be a tribute to the 1949 song ‘Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon’. Incidentally the name of the film was Rangoon. Kangana Ranaut, the leading actress played the character based on the life and times of Mary Ann Evans/Fearless Nadia, Bollywood’s first original stunt-woman. In this song, Julia (Kangana Ranaut) is seen entertaining the armed forces.
We find Paris mentioned in the second stanza.

Mere miyan gaye England by Rekha Bhardwaj, film Rangoon (2017), lyrics Gulzar, music Vishal Bhardwaj

CV Sridhar’s Dharthi starring Rajendra Kumar and Waheeda Rahman had a song – a duet – Rafi & Lata composed by SJ The song was pictureised on the leading pair in parts of Switzerland, Paris and Rome.
And the song was ” ye albeli pyar ka “

44 ksbhatia February 20, 2018 at 3:41 pm

Dr.P K Shetty @40 ;

Yes , Pachhi is known for his passion to shoot his films abroad ; covering as much as possible . Most of his films had Crime as main theme . He was a good associate of Shakti Samant in producing such films . The stanza ….mohan pe pasina halka , gora yeh roop hai [Rafi]….of the famous Howrah Bridge song…..Dekh ke teri nazar….was picturised on pacchi . Pachhi did appeared in bit roles of some of his own films as well as friendly appearance in Mere Mehboob . His elder brother Om Prakash did a good comic appearance in Around the World….in a funny scene discussing indian cricket with Gary Sobbers ….the scene was shot in West Indies .

Incedently , Kagaz Ke Phool was the first cinema scope movie though B & W . This film was entirely shot in cinema scope frame by the ace cameraman V.K.Murthy [ a regular with Guru Dutt films ], whereas Around the World was shot in 35mm format and some good percentage of it were made as blown up prints to 70mm . The same can be said for Sholay for which 70mm and stereo sound was the post production lab work..

If I am not mistaken , the first colored cinema scope movie was Mehboob Khan’s Son of India in 1962. This was followed by Dilip Kumar starred …Leader …in 1964 which was made in Filmalaya Scope , the producer S. Mukerjee’s own version of cinema scope. What followed hereafter was…. Bollywood adopting Hollywood ways of producing movies in 70mm , discarding the cinema scope ways of productions.

R Vasudevan ji @43 ;

Yes. I loved this song…..yeh albeli pyar ki rahen…. when I first saw it in the movie . The movie , Dharti, was not up to the mark though it was a remake of Shivaji Ganeshan version . Some songs were good , here is the one ; again with Basra utterance .

11. Ishq ki main beemar….Lata…Dharti…..SJ

KS Bhatiaji, Anup,
Thanks a lot for a cornucopia of Kabul and Basra songs. It takes me on a nostalgia trip when as I child most of the stories I read were about a saudagar from Kabul and Basra. In some there were also pedigreed horses on offer. Alas, the geopolitical scene is altered irreversibly, and it is now impossible/foolhardy to travel to those parts. Incidentally, I have been fortunate to visit Aleppo, the largest Syrian city before it has been brought to ruins in the civil war.

Dr Shetty,
I have been careless. I went by the common belief that though Pachhi was the producer on record, Around the World was a Raj Kapoor venture. Thanks for pointing it out.

47 AK February 20, 2018 at 4:05 pm

Venkataramanji,
Kangana Ranaut, Vishal Bharadwaj and Rekha Bharadwaj make Mere miyan gaye England a visual treat. The similarity with Mere piya gaye Rangoon is very tenuous though.

Mr Vasudevan,
Ye albeli pyar ki raahein perhaps does not mention the name of the places. As I responded to a comment, there are a whole lot of songs picturised abroad, but I found those more interesting which mentioned the names of cities.

48 R Vasudevan February 20, 2018 at 4:56 pm

Dharti song that I mentioned were picturised in many places and I just mentioned a few of them because I had been there.

49 Shalan Lal February 20, 2018 at 5:19 pm

AK35

The similarity is using the technique of the going to places. In both or many other films when economically people were not able to see the places the journies created interest to see the films.

In Sargam most of the shooting was done in Bombay and near about.

But in Sangam lot of shooting was done on the locations.

Similarity is exoticness.

Dr. Shetty @40;

Thanks for the reference of Sharda’s belly dance number Husne Iran from ….International Crook . This reminds me of a beautiful song with Mazadaran ….a province of Iran , as a referral of respect.

Like Timbuktu , this place also carries vast history of onslaughts and faced many flips of wars . Mazandaran province is one of the most populated province of Iran and has diverse natural resources like oil and natural gas . The place is blessed with large stretches of sandy beaches , dense forest , high mountains including Damavand , one of the highest peak volcano mountain in Asia . It has some beautiful stretches of plains too. The beautiful beaches attracts many tourists . Women are liberal and modern , only small percentage wears burkhas. Aquaculture adds to the economy of Iran .

Here is one of my fav.song from Rustom Soharab which deserve to find a place in this theme .

12 . Mazandaran Mazandaran…..Talat ….Sajjad Hussain

AKji, Bhatiaji, on Pachhi,it was an exhaustive write up. Thank you.
It was a slip up on my side…. Meant 70 mm,and not CinemaScope.
Would Jodi hamaari banegi kaise jaani?..the delightful Manna Da, Asha Bhonsle number ( Majrooh, Chitragupta) qualify? Though no foreign places mentioned, Angreji mulk mein….is there. And, wasn’t Mehmood named Charlie Singaporia? I always thought it is a hat ke Chitragupta number.
Thank you.

52 AK February 21, 2018 at 10:06 am

Dr Shetty,
You are right, Jodi hamari banegi kaise jaani is very atypical of Chitragupta. His style was sweet melody. My criteria was that the song should prominently contain the name of the cities.

53 Canasya February 21, 2018 at 9:53 pm

AKji:

The much awaited post has arrived along with the overwhelming shower of songs from Bhatiaji and others (‘Mazanandaran’ takes the cake in my opinion). Many of the songs above were new to me. Thanks. Here is Alka Yagnik in the title track of ‘Love at Times Square’, MD: Adnan Sami(?).

Simply enjoying the Around The World tour, chartered by Soy, along with all so knowledgeable co-passengers….

55 AK February 22, 2018 at 3:50 pm

Canasya,
I am enjoying the Love at Times Square. Once upon a time, the Times Square was a seedy place known for nude dance bars or live sex shows. It is now the main attraction of Manhattan, and suitable for tours.

Ashokji,
Welcome to the tour.

AKji @55 ;

I think now a days its the Nasdaq that dominate the Time Square as its a mecca of information on the current business and market deals . It gives all the information about the business related events like product launchings , Company celebrations , Media interviews , Corporate and financial deals , seminars and summits …..besides the ups and downs of the market and in depth analysis thereof.

A great feeling for me when I along with my wife and daughter [ both happened to be masters in commerce ] visited this place which is full of energy .

58 P S Seshadri February 23, 2018 at 12:30 pm

Excellent tour around the world via Hindi film songs. My favorite is, of course, “Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon”

59 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty February 28, 2018 at 6:17 pm

Does anyone remember an obscure film from 1979 starring Vinod Mehra, Moushumi Chatterjee,a western actress, and Jeetendra in an extended guest appearance … shot in parts in Canada?
Many wouldn’t!
If I say it is probably the last Hindi movie for which Hemant Kumar scored the music, some might remember!
The film, Love in Canada, directed by S Ramanathan(of Bombay to Goa fame), was a lackluster affair,to say the least.
Lyrics… Yogesh. I have heard a solo each by Rafi,Lata, and, surprise, surprise,Sharon Prabhakar. The albumn lists a solo by Arati Mukherjee, and a song in the voices of Arati Mukherjee, Rafi, and, Hemant Da himself. I have not heard these.
I don’t think any of the songs mentioned Canada or a particular city.
Jeetendra_ Hemant Kumar….in my opinion, this must be their only project together. Also,Rafi_Hemant Kumar…a rare combination, isn’t it?
The three songs I have mentioned have nothing to rave about! Anyone has any more information?

60 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty February 28, 2018 at 8:58 pm

The three other Rafi_ Hemant Kumar combinations I can remember right away …Miss Mary,Do Dil,Biwi aur Makaan.
Which are the Mukhesh_Hemant combination movies?

61 N Venkataraman February 28, 2018 at 11:37 pm

Dr.Shettyji,
@59 &60
I thought you were referring to Hemant Kumar-Md.Rafi duets.
Md. Rafi has rendered at least 20+ songs (both solos and duets ) in roughly a dozen films under Hemant Kumar’s baton.

62 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty March 1, 2018 at 7:40 pm

I just discovered that Biwi Aur Makaan has 10 songs in 12 voices!
A song has Hemant Kumar,Talat Mehmood,Mukesh, Manna Dey and Joginder!Wow!
3 solos , one each by Hemant Kumar,Rafi,Manna Dey.
And, various combinations…
Lata_Asha
Asha_Usha
Hemant Kumar, Manna Dey,Bulu Gupta (who?)
HK,MD , Mukhesh
HK,MD, Balbir, Ghulam Mohammad (? Who)
HK,MD,Jayant Mukherjee (?who)
Most of the songs are pleasant. I am not sure how many of them are retained in the movie, though!

63 AK March 1, 2018 at 11:22 pm

Dr Shetty,
This is indeed a very diverse combination. Ghulam Mohammad can be different from the music director. Out of the 10 songs, I only remember two – Dabe labon se kabhi jo koi salam le le and Sawan mein barkha sataye.

I wonder how could you have missed the following song which was played this morning on Radio here in England.

main nikla o gaddi leke
main nikla o gaddi leke o raste par o sadak me
ek modh aaya, main uthe dil chhod aaya
ek modh aaya, main uthe dil chhod aaya

rab jane kab gujra amritsar,o kab jane lahor aaya
main uthe dil chhod aaya
ek modh aaya, main uthe dil chhod aaya

In the voice of “Udit Narayan” and Music by “Uttam Singh” Lyric by Anand Bakshi film “Gadar – Ek Prem Katha (2001) acted in by Sunny Deol, Amisha Patel

I like the force and energy and humour in the song.

Ms. Shalan Lal ;

The song from Gadar is good …..as you stated….it is full of energy and humour . I remember an advertisement was also made on this song .

Well Amritsar , I think i covered in one of the comments and the song was a duet of Rafi and Asha from Nanak Naam Jahaaz Hai……Bul tere ne chandigarh de …..and covered amritsar as well. I think this and one more were the only songs for which EP was made separately and rest were all shabads that were in LP vinyl records .

I usually make an effort to find old songs from golden and vintage periods . The new ones or even the songs of the last two decades just goes tangent over my head . Yes , I do listen to songs of well made movies specially the one produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra . The songs from his movies really carries vintage flavour . The songs from 1942 A love Story, Parineeta and PK were amazingly very good .

Here is a song from old movie Sargam …..sung by your fav.music director , C. Ramchander.

Main hun ek khalasi…..

I find you have already mentioned the sargam song …..mein hun ek khalasi…..in your earlier comments . My apology for the mix up . In replacement here is one more which i think is of rare quality. The song mention several international destinations.

Honolulu again. KHANJAR,1980. Usha Timothy,Nitin Mangeshkar. Honolulu se aayee hoon main, Pretty mera naam…Reena Roy to Navin Nischal. Of course, door door tak Honolulu kahin se nazar nahin aatee! Shot in a room!
A Bharath Darshan song as a bonus…Dekho mera Jantar Mantar, how jaaoonga main Choo Mantar. Mehmood, Jayashree T….( Mehmood singing for himself, with Anjali.) Once again,no Jantar Mantar in sight! Mehmood,a street magician showing a trick or two!
By the way, anyone recall a movie which had playback by three Ushas… Mangeshkar, Khanna and Timothy?

69 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty March 13, 2018 at 11:14 pm

Have I missed the tram,or,has everyone else? How could we forget the last sensible, enjoyable movie to come out of the Navketan stables?
DES PARDES (1978) , with at least two of it’s songs…. Khushiyan yahin pe milega hamere…..ye des pardes and Jaisa DES waisa bhes… picturised in London, should be a perfect fit. Amit Khanna, Rajesh Roshan combination came up trumps with the score. Tina Munim’s debut film was a super hot. I have much to say about the movie. Let us keep it for tomorrow.
Aap suney aur hum na bole, aise toh haalat nahin hai!

Venkatraman ji’;

Here is a song from ….Chand ki Duniya…, the movie that defies all the physics formulae . I have seen the movie partly and it gave me plenty of laughters till my stomach ache . Drum like rocket going to the moon, plenty of indian apsaras in white sarees , men wearing cloth like diapers and lots of oxygen on moon , mast baharen song indicating many seasons on moon …..and much more.

The song names the countries set to conquer the moon ….and set to beautiful rock and roll beats……

Dekho chakar mein hai sari duniya chakar mein…..Rafi, ….Chand Ki Duniya…..S D Batish [ posed as Nirmal Kumar]
