Dattaram Part 1: Under the shadow of big banyan tree with songs of Mukesh and Manna Dey

20 May 2021

A big banyan tree gives shelter and protects you from elements. But this may become a trap because one may be deterred from venturing out on one’s own for the risks involved. But a human being also has an urge to venture out and stand on his own. That involves a vertical progression from earning from one’s skill to being an entrepreneur: Mason to a contractor; dancer to a choreographer; instrumentalist/ arranger/ assistant to becoming an independent music director; paid employee to a free-lancer.

Every big music director you name started under some big banyan tree: Ravi under Hemant Kumar, RD Burman under SD Burman, Naushad under Khemchand Prakash, and Laxmikant-Pyarelal going through the whole grind of playing instruments in someone’s orchestra to being arranger for some, and assistant to Kalyanji-Anandji. Once they established themselves on their own, we remember them on their own merit without relating them to their lineage. But you think of Dattaram (Wadkar), and you think of Shankar-Jaikishan. Even after becoming an independent music director, Dattaram continued to be assistant to SJ. He composed many superb songs, but many seemed to reflect SJ’s style and instrumentation. He became famous for his ‘Dattu Theka’. Does it flatter him or limit him as a percussionist? I do not know. His case seems to mirror Ghulam Mohammad in relation to Naushad, but this is merely in terms of their trajectory. Among music lovers Ghulam Mohammad is looked upon with great respect for his many compositions which break from Naushad mould.

Born in a poor family in Goa in 1929, Dattaram learnt to play the tabla in childhood with his mother’s encouragement. They came to Bombay in the 1940s where he worked as a labourer in the docks in his early days. The eminent radio-TV personality Sharad Dutt writes that Dattaram learned to play the tabla from Pandhari Nageshwar and later from Yashwant Kerkar. On the recommendation of Kerkar, he worked with composer Sajjad Hussain for three months. Fond of bodybuilding, he met Shankar of the SJ duo in a gym and under his tutelage he joined the Prithvi Theatres. Joining RK camp to play the tabla and other percussion instruments for SJ was the next natural step. He played the tabla and duff in many iconic songs of RK films, such as Dil ka haal sune dilwala and Mera naam Raju gharana anaam.

He was first credited as assistant to SJ in the film Nagina (1951). He first started as an independent music director with Ab Dilli Door Nahin (1957) in which he gave some superhit songs like Chun chunk arti ayi chidiya (Rafi). He followed this with Parvarish next year which had Mukesh’s iconic Ansoo bharin hain ye Jeevan ki raahein. This film also had Manna Dey-Lata Mangeshkar fast-paced romantic duet Masti bhara hai samaan, hum tum hain dono yahan. He continued creating great songs for Mukesh and Manna Dey, such as Dil dhoondhta hai sahare sahare, Haal-e-dil hamara jaane na jaane bewafa (Mukesh); Pyar bhari ye ghataayein, Boley ye dil ka ishara (Manna Dey, duet with Lata Mangeshkar). His superb songs for these two singers further reinforces in our mind his association with Shankar-Jaikishan.

But to be fair, Dattaram was not limited to Mukesh and Manna Dey. He used all the major playback singers. Therefore, it would not be possible to pay him adequate tribute in one post. Let us remember Dattaram with some of his best songs for Mukesh and Manna Dey.

Mukesh

1. Aansoo bhari hain ye jeevan ke raahein by Mukesh from Parvarish (1958), lyrics Hasrat Jaipuri

Subodh says he was enamoured of this song in his early days, but gradually he was put off by its melancholy. I can understand what he says, but this is a must song in any Mukesh compilation. As everlasting as ever.

2. Dil ne use maan liya jiska andaaz naya by Mukesh from Santaan (1959), lyrics Hasrat Jaipuri

If you want to get out of the depressing mood, Dattaram now composes a peppy romantic song, picturised on Rajendra Kumar.

3. Dil dhoondhata hai sahaare sahaare by Mukesh from Kala Aadmi (1960), lyrics Hasrat Jaipuri

But Mukesh is known for sad songs, and Dattaram started with Aansoo bhari hain. They bring the same mood again, now for Ashok Kumar.

4. Ae dil dekhen hain humne bade bade sangdil by Mukesh from Shreeman Satyawadi (1960), lyrics Hasrat Jaipuri

Shreeman Satyawadi was the high point of Dattaram-Mukesh association. With Raj Kapoor as the lead actor it was as if you are enjoying SJ music in an RK film. A party song where everyone is having fun, but Raj Kapoor through this song imperceptibly conveys some philosophical message.

5. Haal-e-dil hamaara jaane na bewafa ye zamana by Mukesh from Shreeman Satyawadi (1960), lyrics Hasrat Jaipuri

From the same film, another great Mukesh song. Picturised on Raj Kapoor with his subaltern friends.

6. Maano ya na maano meri zindagi ki bahaar ho tum by Mukesh and Suman Kalyanpur from First Love (1961), lyrics Gulshan Bawra

First Love also had two Mukesh solos, but this duet with Suman Kalyanpur is absolutely delightful.

Manna Dey

7. Masti bhara hai samaan hum tum hain dono yahan by Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar from Parvarish (1958), lyrics Hasrat Jaipuri

From Aansoo bhari hain ye Jeevan ki raahein, this song is an exact opposite when there is intoxication in the environs, as the two lovers Raj Kapoor and Mala Sinha cavort around.

8. Pyar bhari ye ghataayein by Manna Dey and Lata Magngeshkar from Qaidi No. 911 (1959), lyrics Hasrat Jaipuri

Another fast-paced romantic duet by Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar.

9. Boley ye dil ka ishara aankhon ne mil ke pukara by Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar from Santan (1959), lyrics Hasrat Jaipuri

Rajendra Kumar had earlier serenaded his love ballad solo in the voice of Mukesh, Dil ne use maan liya. Now the lady also reciprocates, and you have this peppy Manna Dey-Lata Mangeshkar duet, three such duets on the trot. Hans Jakhar had mentioned these three fast-duets, highlighting the similarity of their tunes.

10. Bheegi hawaaon mein teri adaaon mein kaisi bahar hai, kaisa khumar hai, jhoom jhoom le le maza by Manna Dey and Suman Kalyanpur from Shreeman Satyawadi (1960), lyrics Gulzar Deenvi

It seems Dattaram specialised in creating fast-paced romantic duets for Manna Dey. Here is another one.

11. Na jaane kahan tum the na jaane kahan hum the by Manna Dey and Suman Kalyanpur from Zindagi Aur Khwab (1961), lyrics Kavi Pradeep

I end this post with another Manna Dey duet with Suman Kalyanpur. The tempo is a little slower than the previous one, but a very melodious song.

Dattaram resembles the famous Amritraj Brothers.

AK ji,

JAB SE TUMHE DEKHA HAI, 1963.

Mohammad Shah rangeele
Gaavat aaj prem raag…

A beautiful Manna Dey song. Listen to the way he sings Mohammad Shah…quaint, I would say.

I remember we discussed Mohammad Shah rangeele from NADIR SHAH in one of the earlier posts.

Why did Dattaram become Rafi centric from the mid 60s?

An excellent informative post on this low-profile and under-appreciated composer.

Its nice to know more details about his life and musical journey.

Dattaram did very few films as an individual composer but didn’t seem to have much regrets. There is a Dattaram Reminisces – Documentary on YT, where talks more about his association with SJ.

For me, Parvarish is an immortal score, I can hear its songs anytime and any number of times!!

I am also fond of all his Manna Dey duets, both with Lata & Suman.

Thanks for beginning the list with Aansoo bhari hai…

FARISHTA, 1968.

Dekhi teri duniya, dekhe tera kaam

The title song could be Mukesh ‘s last song for Dattaram, and, also, one after a long gap.

AK ji,
Thanks for featuring Dattaram. There were quite a number of talented composers in Hindi films, who could not shine due to many reasons. He too was one of them. They proved the saying ‘ Under a Banyan Tree, no other tree can grow” in some cases, which we all know.
Here is some more information on Dattaram from a book ” मराठी संगीतकार कोष” by Madhu Potdar.

At the age of 9 years he came from Goa to Bombay, with his mother. He learnt Classical music with Yashwantbuwa Kerkar and learnt Tabla with Pt. Pandharinath Nageshkar. He joined Prithwi Theatres along with Shankar, playing Tabla. He was assistant to S-J from Barsat onwards. Even after the death of Jaikishen, he was with Shankar.

When there was no work with Shankar, he assisted L-P as well as R.D.Burman, but he had lost interest. After the death of Shankar in 1987, he left Bombay and lived in village Mavlinge, near Dicholim in Goa. He lived a retired life. He gave music to 19 Hindi ( 109 songs) and one each of Marathi, Magadhi and Bhojpuri films. His ” Dattu-Theka” was famous.

Choreographer of Hindi films Manohar Deepak made a Marathi Cinema – ” Savli Premachi ” ( सावली  प्रेमाची ) – 1980. Sunil Gavaskar had acted opposite actress Madhumati (sister of Umpire Pilu Reporter). Dattaram gave music to this film in the name of Om Dattaram. Sunil Gavaskar sang 2 songs in this film, under his baton, but these songs were not taken in the film. However, these songs became popular in Maharashtra. Instead of these songs, he got Deedar Singh to sing a song, in Marathi.

Dr Shetty @1,
I must thank you for introducing me to Manna Dey’s Mohmmad Shah Rangeele from the film Jab se tumhein dekha hai. Now this has become my favourite version over the famous one.

Ye rangeeli fiza further establishes Dattaram’s felicity with composing duets for Manna Dey.

@5,
Dekhi teri duniya dekha tera kaam: This must be the last well-known song of Mukesh composed by Dattaram. But it is as good as any SJ were creating for him at that time.

AKji:

Thanks for this excellent post with some memorable songs. I once attended a program in which Usha Timothy was present. She sang couple of songs, and then came the inevitable question, ‘Why did not she sing more often in Hindi films?’ She replied in a matter-of-fact tone without any trace of bitterness, “When there is a banyan tree, … .’ And everybody instantly understood.

I see that Arun ji @ 6 has also used the Bunyan tree analogy. I am no expert on these matters, and would like to defer to the opinion of more knowledgeable people like Arun ji.

Still, I think that the relationship between Dattaram and SJ had more dimensions. It was more symbiotic, closer to that of a mentor and a protégé. Some time ago, I listened to couple of episodes of Manohar Mahajan’s autobiography on YouTube where he describes his relationship with Ameen Sayani who passed on to him, with no interference, the overflow of work that he could not handle himself. SJ, in place of passing on work, created a price umbrella that let other MDs with lower charges flourish. This situation changed during the 70s and the 80s when LP and Bappi Lahiri began undercutting other MDs on price.

Here are Suman Kalyanpur and Mukesh singing ‘More mann mitwa suna de wo gitwa’ for a Magahi film ‘More Man Mitwaa’:

Dr Deshpande @3,4,
I don’t know whether Dattaram remained content with his station in life, or he accepted it. But he does appear quite happy in his videos. Parvarish was indeed a superb score by him. I have a personal trivia about I saw the film after hearing a great deal about this being Mehmood’s landmark film, after which superstars were scared of him stealing the limelight. I felt nothing of the kind. I was expecting Mehmood as Padosan+. This was nothing of the kind. I found both the film and Mehmood underwhelming. But yes, music is very good.

Ye din, din hain khushi ke: Manna Duet again. I think we have to specially recognise Dattaram for his duets for Manna Dey. That is surely their unique distinction. I can’t think of any other music director who has composed so many superb romantic duets for Manna Dey with Lata Mangeshkar and Suman Kalyanpur. If one wants to quibble, the variety is lacking. Still all credit to Dattaram,

10 AK May 20, 2021 at 2:23 pm

Arunji @6,
You are welcome. Thanks a lot for adding the additional information about Dattaram. This confirms what is available here and there on the Internet. Assisting LP and RDB must not have pleased him, they were so junior to him. The idea of progressing from arranger/assistant to independent music director is not to slide back which must be embarrassing for the person who is compelled to take that path. Laxmikant-Pyarelal were very nimble-footed, talented of course, street-smart and lucky. They also assisted several MDs until they struck gold on their own with their very first film.

So Dattaram has one feather in his cap, to compose songs lip-synched by Sunil Gavaskar. Thanks a lot for the interesting information.

11 AK May 20, 2021 at 2:43 pm

Canasya,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Your mention of Usha Timothy reminded me of Usha Mangeshkar who is the clearest example of Banyan Tree Trap. Her voice bears closer resemblance to Lata Mangeshkar than Suman Kalyanpur’s did. For a long time I thought the title song of Jai Santoshi Ma was sung by Lata Mangeshkar. For most of her best songs I would need to check up with some source. Asha Bhosle had to work extra hard to be different and she had the right music directors at the right time to support her.

Big banner, big name, big success all created a barrier. Everyone was not Roshan or Madan Mohan or Chitragupta to be able to enter and create a niche. Finally in the art world, ‘Freakonomics‘ worked. The book gives a lot of insight to understand some phenomena in the real word which may seem illogical or unjust.

The Mukesh-Suman Kalyanpur duet from More Man Mitwa is superb. It captures the folk tune of the region.

12 N Venkataraman May 20, 2021 at 3:52 pm

AKji,
Though clubbed among the league of lesser known MDs, Dattaram Wadkar deserved more than that. Thanks for the excellent tribute to Dattaram and a lovely selection of songs.

Posting another solo of Mukesh from Shriman Satyawadi.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sN-2Fm3UlEQ

I gather, Gulzar penned seven songs under thename Gulzar Dinvi, all in the early 60s.
Two were for the film Shreeman Satyawadi.

13 Mahesh May 20, 2021 at 4:47 pm

AK ji,

Two successive posts with Mukesh dominating half a dozen initial songs.
I have no words to express my joy. A hat-trick will make me mad.
Dattaram was in fact very much part of the banyan tree.
I think they was overflow of talent and opportunity at that stage and Dattaram made the most of what was offered to him.
“Dattu-Theka”, what Arunkumar ji has rightly mentioned has been described in detail by the composer himself as to how it became a way of life in the songs composed even by others at that time.

Here is one more of Mukesh from Santan (1959) with both the happy and sad versions.

https://youtu.be/L8H7f5zJ8-4

Lastly, I think you would like to sort of rearrange the words in your sentence @11 w.r.t the title song by Usha Mangeshkar.

14 Mahesh May 20, 2021 at 5:32 pm

opps…some mix-up from my end.

Santan happy version is already posted in the main article. The relatively unknown sad version is in the link above.

Very good posts, covering some lovely songs of Dattaram with Mukesh and Manna Dey. Have you noticed, Dattaram has many a times chosen Mukesh for the solos and Manna Dey for duets. I wonder why?

AKji,

Mukesh & Manna Dey rendered 14 and 12 Hindi film songs respectively under Dattaram’s baton.
Except for two solos from First love (1961) and a triad from Shreeman Satyawadi, all the Mukesh’s songs have been posted.

And only 2 songs of Manna Dey (where more two singers are there) are yet to be posted.

Posting one of the remaining solos from First love (1961)

I could not find audio or video link to the song
Mere pyar mein ya vafa na thi ya hai bevafa tera pyar hi

Maheshji, any clue?

17 Mahesh May 20, 2021 at 9:13 pm

Venkataraman ji,

14 for Mukesh is correct. Incidentally, I just completed compiling. 15th is the duet with Suman Kalayanpur from the Magdi film.

https://youtu.be/5tHH5NuVbu0

Here is the audio link of the solo from First Love (1961) which is easily available.

18 N Venkataraman May 20, 2021 at 10:12 pm

Maheshji @ 17,
Thank you for the link.
I was aware of the Magadhi film.
All total there were eight songs and one was the lovely Mukesh-Suman duet posted by Canasyaji.
Besides the 17 Hindi films and the Magadhi film under discussion, Dattaram also scored music for a Marathi film. And as far as I know there were no Mukesh’s songs.

Thus the count for Mukesh’s songs is 15.

Thanks once again Maheshji.

19 AK May 20, 2021 at 10:26 pm

Venkataramanji @12,
Thanks for your appreciation. Rut albeli mast sama is a nice song. I was intrigued by Gulzar Deenvi. Lo and behold, when I checked up HFGK also mentions his name as Gulzar Deenvi. I checked up the sites which mention Gulzar Deenvi wrote 7 songs in all. My understanding is this Gulzar is different from the Gulzar (Sampooran Singh Kalra) who we all know debuted with Bandini (1963), with the song Mora gora ang lai le. Gulzar in his interviews also mentions this song and also narrates his interesting experience with SD Burman, Bimal Roy. So you may correct your impression Gulzar did not write under the name Gulzar Deenvi. It was Gulzar Deenvi who had to go into obscurity once the famous Gulzar came on the scene. But thanks a lot for drawing my attention, I have been careless.

20 N Venkataraman May 20, 2021 at 10:32 pm

Canasyaji @8,
A lovely duet. Thanks for the duet.
I was expecting it from you.
I could locate the links to two out of the eight songs in this film.
Besides the one posted by you, link to the Mubarak Begum’s solo is also available.
I am sure, you must be aware about the details of the songs.
There are two duets of Manna Dey, both with Suman Kalyanpur.
I am providing the details below with hope that somebody may be able to locate the link to the other six songs.

Mahesh @13, 14,
Mukesh came naturally in the two posts. I would have to artificially plan something for a hat-trick, but let that pass. Kabhi kisi ki khushiyan koi loote na has not been posted earlier.

@17,
With this Mukesh songs are completed. Congratulations.

22 AK May 20, 2021 at 10:39 pm

Anup,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Duets with Manna Dey is a very conspicuous feature of Dattaram. The only guess one can make is that he was not able to get out of the hangover of Ye raat bheegi bheegi, Aa ja sanam madhur chaandni mein hum and Pyar hua iqraar hua.

23 AK May 20, 2021 at 10:45 pm

Venkataramnji @16, 18,
I had mentioned once that on the average memorable songs in our films is not more than 15-20% of all the songs composed. With such a narrow base for his main singers Mukesh and Manna Dey, Dattaram did manage to create a big impact. All credit to him. Finally, it is luck and the merciless film industry.

24 mumbaikar8 May 21, 2021 at 6:25 am

AK,
Like the title.
I have watched the documentary Dr. Deshpande has posted in which it quite obvious that he was very happy being in shade of S.J.
He took to music direction, according to him, because SJ asked him to. Seems he preferred being a “sought after” musician than to” looking for work” M D.
He does have some good songs to his credit.
Surprisingly his Manna Dey male duet is not posted yet.
This song is a treat to watch. Raj Kapoor and Mahmood are matching each other step by step in dancing as much as Manna Dey and Rafi are in singing.
Mama O mama O mama mama mama
https://youtu.be/dphargF73j4

AK@ 11
I think, more than Usha, Meena Mangeshkar is the classic example of living under Banyan Tree, her very first song “aapne chheen liya dil “was the “ ek akela” song of Farmaish. Lata Mangeshkar had three solos.
All Meena sang after that were two or three duets or triads with her sisters.
In 2018 she wrote Lata’s biography titled “ Mothi Tujhi Savli”

25 AK May 21, 2021 at 7:18 am

Mumbaikar8,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Mama o mama is one of the best duets of Manna Dey and Rafi, and the picturisation is perfect. Thanks for mentioning it.

Aapne chheen liya dil had Rafi with Meena following, and music by HB. But Usha has sung some outstanding solos too. So my mind went to Usha Mangeshkar. Let us say both Usha and Meena, it must have been quite a crowd in the same household. The rebel sister charted a different path for herself. The peace-loving sisters remained contented under the Banyan Tree. Is this a fair summation?

26 Mahesh May 21, 2021 at 11:25 am

AK ji,

I stand corrected w.r.t total Mukesh songs for Dattaram. Its 14 not 15.
Here is the summary.

1958, Parvarish, 1 solo
1959 Santan, 1 solo
1960 Kala Aadmi , 1 solo
1960 Shreemaan Satyawadi, 3 solos, one triad, Suman and Mahendra
1961 First Love, 2 solos and one duet with Suman
1961 Zindagi aur Khwab, 1 solo
1962 Neeli Aankhen, 1 solo
1968 Farishta, 1 solo

Finally, one duet with Suman for the Magadhi film.

So its 11 solos, 02 duets and 1 triad.

14 Songs altogether.

27 R Vasudevan May 21, 2021 at 11:35 am

Good and interesting post on Dattaram who remained loyal to SJ till the end. He had the ability to compose music independently and could have walked away from the great duo but did not. So were assistants like
Jayadev (SD Burman), GS Kohli (OP Nayar) who also remained with their bosses.

As most of the songs I know that were composed by Dattaram has already been listed by readers/followers of this great blog, I am not adding any song.

28 Sangeeta Gupta May 21, 2021 at 11:41 am

Thank you for this beautiful post and array of beauties from his collection of songs. Most of them such popular and superb songs. One did not even know that they were composed by Dattaram ji apart from a few.

29 N Venkataraman May 21, 2021 at 6:30 pm

Maheshji @ 26,
Thanks for the break-up.
If we count the sad and happy versions of ‘Dil ne use maan liya jiska andaaz naya’ as separate songs, then the count will be 15.

30 N Venkataraman May 21, 2021 at 6:31 pm

AKji, Arunji, Rajeshji,
Arunji @6 has mentioned about Dattaram’s only Marathi film and the two unused songs sung by Sunil Gavaskar. Beside the two unused songs, there were 3 more songs in this film. And one of them was duet sung by Manna Dey and Usha Mangeshkar. Lyrics Datta Keshav. Here is the link

31 N Venkataraman May 21, 2021 at 6:42 pm

AKji, Maheshji,
Maheshji has given a synopsis of Mukesh’s films. Thank you Maheshji.

As stated by Arunji, Dattaram scored music for 19 films- 17 Hindi films, 1 Magadhi film and 1 Marathi film. Out of the 113/114 songs he composed for these 19 films, Mukesh songs account for 14/15 and Manna Dey’s songs 16 (revised). That leaves us with 83 songs for next part(s) on Dattaram.

One triad (Mukesh, Suman & Mahendra Kapoor) from the film Shriman Satyavadi, and two quartets from Jab Se Tumhe Dekha Hai (Lata,Asha,Manna & Rafi) and Raaka (Manna, Rafi, Asha & Kamal Barot) are yet to be posted. Links for the two duets of Manna Dey from the Magadhi film are not yet available.

Here is the list of all the fulms for which Dattarm scored music with Mukesh and Manna Dey songs.

1. Ab Dilli Door Nahin – 1957 – No Mukesh or Manna Dey songs
2. Parvarish – 1958 – 1 Mukesh solo – 3 Manna Dey duets
3. Santaan – 1959 – 2 Mukesh solos – 1 Manna Dey duet
4. Qaidi No. 911 – 1960 – No Mukesh songs – 1 Manna Dey Duet
5. Kala Aadmi – 1960 – 1 Mukesh Solo – No Manna Dey songs
6. Shreeman Satyavadi – 1960 – Mukesh 3 solos, 1 triad – Manna Dey 1 duet
7. First Love – 1961 – Mukesh 2 solos, 1 duet – No Manna Dey songs
8. Zindagi Aur Khwab – 1961 – 1 Mukesh solo – 1 Manna Dey duet
9. Dark Street – 1961 – No Mukesh songs – 1 Manna Dey duet

Venkataramanji @31

Thanks for providing the list of films with Dattaram’s music.

As per my information, he gave music to 19 Hindi films (Arunji @6 has also mentioned that he gave music to 19 Hindi films).
Besides the 17 films mentioned by you, two more in my list are:
Choron Ka Chor 1970 – No Mukesh & Manna Dey songs
Hum Sab Ek Hain (1960s – unreleased) – One song by Asha (as per HFGK)

I would request Arunji to confirm the list.

N Venkataraman ji @ 31

What I have said is ” He gave music to 19 Hindi ( 109 songs) and one each of Marathi, Magadhi and Bhojpuri films.”

You have missed 2 Hindi films.
1.Hum sab ek hain -68 (UR) 4 songs, but HFGK shows only 1 song
2. Choron ka Chor-1970 4 songs.

Rajeshji @ 32, Arunji @ 33,
Thanks a lot for the updation.
I missed HumSab Ek Hain (1968) because I did not check the Appendix section. It happened earlier too.
In some sites like Hindi Geet Mala, K Dutta is mentioned as the MD for Chorn Ka Chor, hence the slip.
I will update my list. However I find no songs by Manna Dey or Mukesh.
Thanks once again.

AKji @ 19,
There are several sites which states that Gulzar began writing lyrics for films under the pen name Gulzar Deenvi. Since he was born in Dina in the Jhelum district (now in Pakistan), he might have adopted the name.

I gathered the information from the introductory part of the interview with Gulzar (Guftagoo). (01:50) in the RS TV.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJQ0sh-BU_8

In an article Naqsh Lyallpuri recalls “ there were four other lyricists besides him in Choron Ki Baraat and one of them was Gulzar Deenvi, who later became famous as just Gulzar. Gulzar wrote, ‘Yeh duniya hai taash ke patte, isko karo salaam’ for the film. That was the time when all of us were writing at a feverish pitch to make ends meet. He might not even remember it today.”
https://www.idiva.com/entertainment/bollywood/naqsh-lyallpuri-dk-bose-is-an-embarrassment/12529

Quoting from another article, ‘’ Bollywood Retrospect: Dattaram Wadkar -The brilliance behind ‘Aansoo Bhari Hai’ from 1958 film Parvarish” in DNA
.… “While “Haal-E-Dil” was written by Hasrat Jaipuri, most of the songs in “Shriman Satyawadi” were written by Gulzar, who was credited as Gulzar Deenvi in those days. “Shriman Satyawadi” was among his earliest released songs. “More Gora Ang Laila” (“Bandini”) is considered Gulzar’s first recorded song but it came out three years later, in 1963.”
https://www.dnaindia.com/entertainment/report-bollywood-retrospect-dattaram-wadkar-the-brilliance-behind-aansoo-bhari-hai-from-1958-film-parvarish-2092864

Thus it appears that Gulzar penned lyrics for a few films like Shreeman Satyawadi (1960), Choron Ki Barat (1961), Diler Hasina (1962) under the name Gulzar Deenvi.
There is a lot of confusion as to Gulzar’s first film as lyricist.
He also wrote a song each for Kabuliwala (1961) and Prem Patra (1962). Both the films released before Bandini.

From an article in Femina- “He did odd jobs in the city, which included working as a mechanic, supervising the painting of cars. But in time, he began writing lyrics for films under the pen name Gulzar Deenvi. During his media interactions following the release of his collection of poems titled Pluto, Gulzar had likened the ouster of Pluto from the family of planets to his own position as a poet in a family of businessmen.”
https://www.femina.in/celebs/indian/the-life-and-times-of-gulzar-99267.html

Finally, Mira Hashmi, the granddaughter of Faiz Ahmed Faiz and a writer of repute, in a book on Gulzar, also mentions this information. I do not remember the name of the book. It was a part of the series of three books on Gulzar written by three different authors.

I could find no information on any other ‘Gulzar Deenvi’.
So till we find any information to the contrary can we consider that Gulzar and Gulzar Deenvi were one and the same person?

Please see this 6 minute video made by Shishir krishna Sharma, on this issue, giving truth with proof.

Like Gulzar, many cine artistes have hidden their Debut film names. Some of them are Johnny walker, Mala sinha, Sudha malhotra and few more. Once I wrote about this in one of my posts also.

Mr Vsudevan @27,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Jaidev gave some superb music on his own, no trace of SDB.

38 AK May 21, 2021 at 10:35 pm

Sangeetaji @28,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Most of his songs for Mukesh and Manna Dey are very well-known. It was important to recognise that he was the composer of those songs. I have the satisfaction that I have been able to highlight his contribution.

39 AK May 21, 2021 at 10:52 pm

Venkataramanji @30,
Thanks for posting this duet from Sunil Gavaskar’s Marathi film. What did he want to achieve that cricket could not give?

@31,
This is impressive compilation. I also look forward to Part 2 with so many songs still remaining.

@35,
Arunji @36,
With so much evidence I have to accept Gulzar debuted much before Bandini and Mora gora ang laile. I am surprised why he, in his interview on DD, said quite clearly that it was his debut. There was nothing to be embarrassed about Kabuliwala or Shreeman Satyawadi. Naqsh Lyallpuri’s interview is interesting to read. Sour grapes? Film songs are not always literature. Sahie also wrote some very pedestrian film songs.

40 N Venkataraman May 22, 2021 at 8:01 pm

Arunji @36,
Thanks for the link. I should have remembered Dui Bechara (1960). But I am not sure whether his name appeared as Gulzar Deenvi.

41 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty May 22, 2021 at 8:51 pm

AK ji,

I slightly disagree with your views that Usha Mangeshkar’s voice is closer to Lata’s . Meena ‘s sounds much closer to me.

In the few movies that Lata has produced and given music for, she has used Meena more than her other siblings. She has, also, sung under her direction.

42 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty May 22, 2021 at 8:59 pm

Mumbaikar ji,
Meena sang a couple of solos in KANCHAN GANGA, Marathi, 1953 ?, produced by Lata. Nice ones.
Music by Vasant Desai.

Being the immediate next sibling, she was the dearest to Lata.

43 AK May 22, 2021 at 9:49 pm

DR Shetty @41,
I remember Usha Monageshkar’s songs more. I have to hear Meena’s songs more closely, but you may be right.

44 Ashok M Vaishnav May 23, 2021 at 4:23 pm

So happy that Dattaram gets the attention he deserves.

45 AK May 23, 2021 at 7:05 pm

Ashokji,
He deserved that. You are welcome.

46 ANITA RUPAVATARAM May 23, 2021 at 7:13 pm

AKji, the songs of Mukesh and Manna Dey with Dattaram are already exhausted, I see!☺ There is nothing much to add. However, may I mention here that I had written a blog post in two parts on the lesser known duets of Manna Dey. Today when I went back to them, I realized that Dattaram’s compositions figure in them quite prominently.

Anita,
With so few songs sung by Mukesh and Manna Dey for Dattaram Wadkar, it is not surprising that all their songs are posted by now. I read your two posts. Manna Dey’s duets composed by Dattaram indeed figure prominently. Just shows Dattaram’s special talent for Manna Dey’s romantic duets.

48 mumbaikar8 May 24, 2021 at 7:53 am

Dr. Shetty @ 22
Thanks for mentioning Kanchan Ganga songs, beautiful solos.
seems Meena Mangeshkar chose to give up playback singing in Hindi movies.

49 Hans May 25, 2021 at 2:19 pm

AK,
A very nice write up and the song selection bringing out the essence of his compositions for both singers. You will never find another example of the same tune – with slight changes – bringing four hits. I am talking about song nos. 7,8,9 and 11. Even the tune for no 10 is not very far from these tunes, but that was not a hit of the magnitude of the other 4.

There is talk of the banyan tree and comparing him with assistants like Ravi, Ghulam Mohd, N Datta, Jaidev etc. I think Mahesh’s comment @13 has not been noticed. He has made a very thoughtful comment that Dattaram was part of the banyan tree itself. I would call Dattaram the ghost of the Peepal tree, who has his strength in remaining in the tree itself. He may venture to come down on occasions and the films he gave music are examples only of this. If he had ever cherished the dream of being an independent composer, those were safely deposited in his nest on the Peepal after SJ hit the top after Junglee and Sasural. The main target are earnings and he was earning more as assistant of SJ than many regular composers near the top of the ladder.

I would elaborate on Mahesh’s comment by stating that he had a huge clout in the SJ camp and was by no means of the gentle sort. He managed a horde of musicians with them, which satisfied his ambitions. One other instance would bring out his thinking and intentions. In his first 4 films Lata Mangeshkar was part of 15 out of 21 songs where a female could contribute. Then he introduced Suman Kalyanpur in Kaala Aadmi in 1959 and after singing one solo and one duet in that film Lata stopped singing for him. Later she sang two solos in two Dara Singh films in 1965, after the storm over her Rafi spat had turned out against her songwise.

You see, even SJ had never dared to use Suman before 1963 seeing Lata was fidgety about her. And that was also after her refusal to sing with Rafi. My own theory based on some reports in film magazines of the time is that Lata initially stopped singing for SJ in 1963 on learning about the news of Jaikishan’s marriage. They took Suman who had a similar voice for Dil Ek Mandir and dubbed the Hamrahi song with Mubarak Begum. Later financiers and distributors were called in to pressurise Lata who then modified her dictat that she would not sing with Rafi. Thus Rafi was made a scapegoat. That was the reason SJ were hell-bent on a compromise formula. Since Lata was suffering more due to this as most of the MDs thought Rafi innocent, she wanted the compromise more than Rafi. But, Rafi was singing a lot of songs for SJ for whom he had a huge respect and his general nature being amiable, he ultimately agreed.

Facts would also support this. SJ despite the Lata spat gave only 17 out of almost 500 songs composed by them during 1961 to 70. Against this, Dattaram gave Suman 24 songs out of the 100 odd songs he composed.

Things were common between N Dutta and Duttaram. Both highly talented and did not get proper opprtunities. Another in this catagory could be Hansraj Behl.

51 AK May 25, 2021 at 10:15 pm

Hans,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. I had noticed Mahesh’s comment and also understood what he was saying. The Banyan Tree gives shelter and comfort. As long as the principal is going great guns, being his assistant assures steady income; venturing out has a risk. Many cases of venturing out is not for better ‘financial prospects’. It is for status, in many cases it backfires as going back looks awkward, and working independently does not pay more than what the person was getting as a skilled technician. Complex subject. I am willing to accept that Dattaram was happy with his station.

Dattaram had some interesting preferences for singers. Mukkesh, Manna Dey and Suman Kalyanpur stand out.

52 AK May 25, 2021 at 10:17 pm

KB,
Hnasraj Behl is somewhat different. He spanned the Vintage and the Golden Eras. That was the period of giants of film music. His is not a case of Banyan Tree, but not getting noticed under the shadows of giants.

53 AK May 25, 2021 at 10:49 pm

KB @835,
