Concluding the series of centenary tributes to Hemant Kumar (16 June 1920-26 September 1989) with his non-film songs
My introduction to the last post by Ashok M Vaishnav on Hemant Kumar’s solo songs under the baton of other music directors conveyed that that rounded off his centenary celebrations. But it rankled me that his centenary celebrations would be incomplete without a post on his non-film songs. Fortuitously, a slot made itself available in the calendar year, enabling me to fulfil my desire and round off the centenary celebrations with my favourite non-film songs (NFS) of Hemant Kumar.
If I have to describe Hemant Kumar’s NFS I can do no better than borrow the words of our engineer-poet K S Bhatia, “There is no place on the earth where one can find silence! Expecting silence in deep woods and forest is also thin ….as it carries the gentle melodies of chirping of birds, chattering of cricket and buzzing of bees. Of all, butterflies are the ones that makes no sound. Sweet solitude is all that they make. Hemant Kumar’s soft charming voice is a combination of all these sounds.” He said it in the context of his film songs. I relate it equally to his NFS.
The films songs and NFS were two different compartments – some earned fame as a singer of NFS, such as Jagmohan and Juthika Roy, and most playback singers earned their fame for their film songs. Yet some playback singers straddled both the worlds with equal acclaim. You can count these on fingers; in the vintage era I would put the New Theatres stalwarts, K L Saigal, Pankaj Mullick and K C Dey, and in the Golden Era, Talat Mahmood and Hemant Kumar in this category. I have already written on the best NFS of Saigal and Talat Mahmood in glowing terms, and also posts on Pankaj Mullick and K C Dey in which NFS were as prominent as their film songs. Hemant Kumar’s NFS was long overdue, and I am happy that, finally, I am doing it as the Grand Finale of his centenary celebrations.
N Venkataraman’s magnum opus Hemantayan 1, which set off the celebrations, mentions how Hemant Kuma’s singing career started with his first Bengali NFS record Janite jodi go tumi (1937). Bengali NFS, including his Rabindra Sangeet songs, remained an important part of his singing career. There is often a controversy whether his debut as a singer in Hindi films was in Meenakshi (1942) or Irada (1944), but there is an agreement that his initial Hindi film songs are not well-known, and his great fame as a Hindi film singer started in the early 1950s with Ye raat ye chaandni phir kahan (Jaal, 1952). However, his first Hindi NFS Kitna dukh bhulaya tumne pyari (1943) has remained immortal ever since. His other Hindi and Bengali NFS are enormously popular among his fans.
To give you a perspective about Hemant Kumar’s output of NFS and films songs, I am borrowing this Table from Venkataramanji’s equally awesome work Hemantayan 2.
Hemant Kumar’s total career at a glance
Drawing from the above table, his career as a singer can be presented as under:
Hemant Kumar’s NFS and Film songs
For Hindi audience Hemant Kumar is one of the most melodious playback singers, even with a relatively small output. Thanks to this series now we realise that he was a much bigger icon in Bengali, both as a singer and music director. In Bengali his NFS account for about 49% of the total songs sung by him.
But Hemant Kumar’s magic does not rest on numbers. Let me pay my tribute to him as my contribution to the centenary celebrations with his non-film songs.
1. Kitna dukh bhulaya tumne pyari (Hindi NFS, 1943), lyrics Faiyyaz Hashmi, music Kamal Dasgupta
This is a song you would like to hear in the silence of nights. His first Hindi NFS remains my eternal favourite. This song was included in Hemantayaan 1, but it is worth a repeat. A befitting song to open the post.
2. Main saaz bajaaun tum gaao
Imagine you are with your beloved in the moonlight night by the side of a flowing river with a guitar in your hand. You play the instrument and she sings, the music will make the flowing stream restless, but the soothing song will calm the waves into the stillness of the night. The lyrics, the music and Hemant Kumar’s sonorous voice create a magical impact. This will make even a stone-heart a poet.
3. Mere andhere ghar mein aakar…Raat ko din bana diya, lyrics Kanwar Kumar, music Hemant Kumar
Another song which pulls at your heartstrings.
मेरे अंधेरे घर में आकर
चादर अपने सर से गिराकर
दुनिया को जगमगा दिया
रात को दिन बना दिया
When I started compiling songs for this post long ago, I had noted that this song was based on a Bengali NFS sung by Hemant Kumar, Bhebechhinu chirodin, composed by Kamal Dasgupta, but its video is no longer accessible. I would be grateful if a reader posts this song. Hemant Kumar had improved upon its tune in his Hindi version.
4. Keno chokher jole bhijiyee dilem na (Rabindra Sangeet)
There are songs you hear once from anyone, and they get embedded in your memory forever. Keno chokher jole I heard once decades ago from a friend, and I have never forgotten it since. My romance for this songs is because from what I can make out from some words, it reminds me of Mahadevi Verma’s teary-eyed ‘Jo tum aa jaate ek baar’. Only Venkataramanji can confirm if the song has any similarity to Mahadevi Varma’s poem.
But this is a song you enjoy without any barrier of language.
5. Shawan gagane ghor ghanghata (Rabindra Sangeet)
Continuing the Rabindra Sangeet mood enjoy this lovely song of monsoon, cloudy sky and lightning in the night.
6. Mon moro megher shangi (Rabindra Sangeet)
Rabindranath Thakur’s one of the principal themes of his poetry has been nature. The clouds again, and the poet flies along with the clouds to unknown lands with the music of the pitter patter of raindrops (रिमझिम रिमझिम). Many years later I became aware of its Hindi film adaptation in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar, Man mera udta jaaye (Ma Beta, 1962). I don’t know if I am being too dismissive, but if you hear Hemant Kumar’s original you would realise why I find Lata Mangeshkar song so forgettable.
7. Aanchal se kun bandh liya mujh pardesi ka pyaar (1945), lyrics Faiyyaz Hashmi, music Kamal Dasgupta
This was my introduction to Hemant Kumar’s NFS through radio, and it was always among the top songs played frequently in the segment, ‘Sugam Sangeet’. In the comments on the YT link there are conflicting views about its lyricist and its music director. I believe the lyricist is Faiyyaz Hashmi and music was by Kamal Dasgupta – the duo were Shakeel Badayuni/Naushad of NFS.
8. Aaj sharaabi aankhon se peene ki humne thaani
The poet now does not need tavern, the barmaid or the drink, because he is soaking the intoxicating beauty of the eyes – they are the saaqi and pyala.
9. Madhuban mein na Shyam bulao (c. 1945), lyrics Faiyyaz Hashmi, music Kamal Dasgupta
Another honey-dripping song from Hemant Kumar.
10. Bhala tha kitna apna bachpan, lyrics Faiyyaz Hashmi, music Kamal Dasgupta
Memories of childhood, playing around the trees, stealing fruits, chased by their enemy the Maali, play-acting groom and bride, would fill anyone with joy.
11. Yaad humein kyun aati ho, ab yaad humein kyun aati ho, lyrics Faiyyaz Hashmi, music Francisco Casanovas
This song has been my perennial favourite. It is of remonstration by a lover whose heart is broken by his beloved, but her memories he is not able to shake off.
12. Ashq aankhon se rawaan aur jigar jalta hai (ghazal), lyrics Santokh Singh, music Tarsem Lal
Hemant Kumar renders this ghazal in his typical melodious style.
13. Abhi na parda giraao thahro (NFS nazm), lyrics Gulzar, music Hemant Kumar
We are aware of some most exquisite Hemant Kumar’s film songs penned by Gulzar, such as Tum pukaar lo, Saawan mein barkha sataye, Janam se banjara hun bandhu, and Bas ek chup si lagi hai. I now discover they have collaborated for many non-film songs too. Hemant Kumar has composed and sung these songs. From the tonal quality of his voice and the music arrangement, they appear to be of the last phase of his singing career, probably when his normal career had practically come to an end. Among the songs I have browsed I particularly like this one, both for its poetry and music. Hemant Kumar’s voice is superb. A befitting song to end the post with.
And here is my rough translation.
Please don’t bring down the curtains yet, there are many tales still to be told
The romance has gone through one experience, many episodes are still to come
Please don’t bring down the curtains yet..
Only the clay which was raw has broken, only the limbs have worn out
We have still to die many deaths, as our breath is yet not stilled
Please don’t bring down the curtains yet..
The travellers disoriented by heartbreak would carry on for quite long
Somewhere the goal of their yearning would meet their final destination
Please don’t bring down the curtains yet..
Notes:
1. I had to bring down the curtains at some stage, though I am aware many exquisite songs are still left. I trust our erudite readers to fill us up with the rest.
2. I request Venkararamanji and other readers to complete the missing details of year, lyricists and music directors, and also correct any mistakes.

Akji fitting finale to the series of articles on the legend. I have memories of listening to the very first song in your list “kitna dukh bhulaya ” on Vividh bharti ( in the programme Rang Tarang). Is Hemant Kumar here influenced by KL Saigal?
Statistics given in the article reveal that HK rendered 15 NFS in
” other ” languages. I think that 5 of them are Marathi NFS
Here is one of them
Ha karavaan chalala
https://youtu.be/ibDsk4scUvE
Unfortunately I could not find any information about the lyricist & the composer of this song.
AK ji;
Thanks for your encouraging nice words that makes me a little emotional too ….I hope this is just an adio and not goodbye to Hemant Kumar s beautiful charming sweet songs and compositions we all enjoyed while going thru the great inputs by Venkatraman ji , Ashok M Vaishnav ji , Your good self and many other dedicated members of SoY .
Tenderness of heart itself is a great gift from Divine God . Hemant perhaps had those extra golden beats that he was able to transfer to his compositions.
NFS songs has always been special to me . Collectively they were real mint . Big Radios of the 50s brought many such songs to the fore like ….Bhala tha kitna apna bachpan …., the song that was household favorites of all in the community living. As Music Directors had free hand and liberty in their compositions ; so were the lyricists who could easily translate their thoughts into lyrically chraming words. As many have endorsed….those were the days when melody was Queen and Lyrics were meaningful and romantic as well .
I am not choosy about best of NFS songs . All the songs posted in your article are bests of the best . Thanks again for this wonderful post once again.
AK ji;
Here is one song to open my account…
Poet – Santok Singh,
Music – Tersemlal
Singer- Hemant Kumar.
Non Film (private) Song.

Mr Muli,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. I think Hemant Kumar was not consciously imitating K L Saigal style. His natural style was sonorous. He has sung several songs in the style of Kitna dukh bhulaya tumne pyari.
I don’t know the break-up of ‘Other languages’. Your information must be correct. One of the Marathi songs must be Dolkara dolkara though it is a duet with Lata Mangeshkar.
K S Bhatiaji,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Most NFS are about tenderness. I am not surprised a poetic person like you is so fascinated by non-film songs. 1940s and 1950s had a different kind of sensitivity in NFS. 1980s onwards there was a different kind of revival of NFS – one major stream was Indipop which was very different from what we understood from NFS
Paakar bhi tumhein hum pa na sake is an excellent song. I have included one from this combination. This is another good one. Thanks a lot for sharing.
AKji,
The entire Hemant Kumar series has been a wonderful musical treat to all his fans and a fitting tribute to the legend on the occasion of the centenary celebrations.
This concluding post on his Non-film Songs perfectly complements all the preceding brilliant posts.
As rightly mentioned, HK is one of the select singers who was equally successful and known for his film songs as well as NFS.
Adding one of my favourite NFS sung by him in Marathi – A nice bhavgeet
Preetichya chand raati gheuni haat haathi
( In the moonlight romantic night, taking your hand in hand)
M- Anil Arun L – Shantaram Nandgaonkar

AKji:
All good things come to an end and so does this magnificent series on the centenary of a musical legend! Hemant Kumar, the singer, had been known for the easy, flowing simplicity of his renderings, and your wonderful selection of NFS songs underscores that point. Here is ‘Gira do parda ke dastan khaali ho gayi hai’ by Gulzar, the companion song for ‘Abhi na parda giraao theharo’:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33n7Fb-v700&ab_channel=HemantKumar-Topic
Dr Deshpande @6,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. In my mind NFS had to be the concluding post in the series on centenary celebrations. The series have been carried by N Venkataraman and Ashok M Vashnav on their shoulders. Mine is just one post. Let us thank them again for their efforts.
Preetichya chand rati is a nice song. If Hemant Kumar has sung only 5 Marathi NFS, only 2 are left to be covered.
Canasya @7,
Gira do parda is an interesting companion, or counter-song written by Gulzar. This must have come later than Abhi na parda uthaao thahro. Hemant Kumar has taken care to compose the optimistic version in a faster tune, and the other in a slower tempo to make it sound sad. Thanks for posting it. The series has been very satisfying for me.
AKji
Two other Marathi NFS rendered by Hemant Kumar are
1 Daryavari ra tarali hori ra
https://youtu.be/5iyXLXmNTRQ
This is a duet with a relatively unfamiliar voice of Shyama Chittar.
This was very popular during its times.
2 Priti tujhi manmohini
This is a solo but I could not find its video or audio. It is written by Vandana Vitankar and composed by Pradip Vilas ( apparently a pair)
Mr Muli,
I am sure someone will post the link of Priti tujhi manmohini. That completes his Marathi NFS?
Rahulji & AKji,
Here’s the audio link for Priti tujhi manmohini
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQax4KhViOs
Here’s one more Marathi song by HK:
An early 70s devotional song from the album – Sukh Karta Dukh Harta.
No idea about the MD and Lyricist.
Gauri Ganesha he vighnesha deva karunakara
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLYRnFQN3KA
AKji,
This is a much needed to piece to complete the canvas of Hemant Kumar as music director and singer.
Thank yo so much.
Dr Deshpande @12,
Thanks a lot. We didn’t have to wait.
@13,
Gauri Ganesh he vighnesh deva is a nice song. That makes it Hemant Kumar’s 6th NFS.
Ashokji @14,
Fitting in a post on NFS in the calendar year was getting difficult. Now I feel happy that I have been able to do it.
AK ji;
Picking up some threads in continuation from songs @5 , here are some more….

AK ji and all others ;
As we listen to such charming voice we must all give credits to lyricists who wrote such wonderful songs. Blessed are those who own the vinyl records of these gems. Holding vinyl in hands itself is a great feeling…as if looking at a beautiful painting. The deep circular motion over gramophone player had no tangent but only centripetal force to enjoy .
One must have noticed that Fayyaz Hasmi was the one who wrote NF songs and beside Hemant Kumar….Kamal Das and others were instrument in bringing out the best of compositions . Most of the songs that I posted are not having details of lyric writers and MDs. It would be worth exploring these important details.
K S Bhatiaji,
I was racking my brains that I have missed some of my eternal favourites. You have given one, Tumne mujhko sada jalaya. Without this my post was incomplete. Among other songs I had frequently heard, Patthar ki tarah ho dil jiska. It’s lyrics and music is by Ravi. This must have reminded you another Ravi-composed film song, but written by Sahir Ludhiyanavi – Kisi patthar ki moorat se parastis ki tamanna hai.
Zulfon mein apni ik dil-e-shaida liye huye is extremely melodious, the words are very evocative. Gulzar’s Raat chup chap dabe paaon has the characteristic imagery of Gulzar. You want to listen more to savour sense.
Ja tujhe bhool gaye yaad rahe gham tere
Is tarah dil se huye dil se huye hum tere
Beautiful lines. ‘Dard ka rishta’ is the most powerful bonding.
You have presented a beautiful bouquet. Thanks a lot.
AKji,
What a brilliant idea for a concluding post! Loved it. And I must confess I wasn’t aware of any of his Hindi NFS. So it was a musical treat for me. Thank you so much for this.
The entire series was a collection of wonderful and melodious songs. Thanks to you, Venkatramamnji and Ashokji for these posts.
BTW,
where is Venkataramanji?
Missing his comments on SoY as well as on my blog.
Anup
Anup,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. I am sure you now acknowledge that NFS is an important part of Hemant Kumar’s singing. Venkataramanji missing on Hemant Kumar is surprising. Off and on he gets very preoccupied with different things. I hope he shows up soon.
Rahul ji, Dr Rajesh ji, AK ji,
Has this Marathi song of 1972 included?
Balhav ra majhi ra majhi naav hi..
ShantaRam Nandgaonkar, Anil _ Arun.
3 Konkani songs by HK:
Juliana, moga mojya Juliana…
Duets with Helen D Cruz:
Malbar chondrim udyoon aaylo…
Soponn go fantyache..
…kitlo sobit to sonsar…
( I could have misspelt some words. )
A difficult language for the outsiders. But, HK doesn’t sound too alien.
Dr Shetty,
Thanks for discovering Hemant Kumar’s NFS from ‘other’ languages. Hope someone posts the links.
Venkatraman ji , AK Ji ;
Yes, I am missing venkat ji too . His comments and observations are always very informative and valuable too. Waiting in the lists are …hans ji, Arvinder Ji , Ms Mumbaikar 8….and others. They all make lively contributions.
Some of NF songs are still in look out . I have heard some song composed by V. Balsara and finding difficult locating on YT . In the mean time here are few more songs that carries one from Gulzar sahib too…..

K S Bhatiaji @26, 27, 29,
It is a real pleasure to hear your additions. many songs I am reconnecting with after they had slipped out of my memory. I would particularly like to mention two: (i)Masti hai chhayi basant pavan par. After a long mukhda, there is an unexpected refrain, ‘Jamuna kinare, ho Jamuna kinare’. And (ii) Mohabbat mein meri tarah jo luta ho. This has uncanny similarity with Tere pyar ka aasra chahta hun – this must be ‘inspired’ from Hemant Kumar’s NFS.
AK ji @ 30 ;
Yourself…
….This has uncanny similarity with Tere pyar ka aasra chahta hun – this must be ‘inspired’ from Hemant Kumar’s NFS…..
Thats what I too observed @27 footnote. So one can link the connection ….Hemant , Ravi and N.Dutta.
KS Bhatiaji,
Sorry, I had missed your last line.
One more song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkHTpCkzzDM
Kal Teri Tasveer Ko….
Manoj,
Kal teri tasveer ko sajde kiye hai raat bhar
humne teri yaad ke aansoo [iye hain raat bhar
Beautiful lines, sung so feelingly by Hemant Kumar. The date of release is shown as 12.1.2943. This could be re-recording of 50s or 60s. Early nonsongs of Hemant Kumar are absolutely melodious.
Wonderful post. I don’t know how I missed it. This is something to preserve.
‘Aanchal se kyun bandh liya’ used to be my favourite in college. I sang it with a lot of feeling.
The similarity between ‘Muhabbat mein meri tarah jo luta ho’ and ‘Tere pyar ka aasra’ may not be an instance of copying, but following a traditional bandish in Pilu. I remember a Kajri by Bismillah Khan and VG Jog – haven’t been able to locate it on YouTube – with a very similar tune.
Subodh,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. I knew you would like the post. I should have asked for your recording. 🙂
AK,
The most surprising thing for me in this series on Hemant Kumar is that his undisputed No. 1 fan on SOY, Subodh has not written any post. Can we have one more from his classical perspective as a bonus.
Hans,
I hope Subodh is reading it. His focus is primarily ragas in classical music, and he explores film songs based on those ragas, therefore Hemant Kumar doe not fit in his series. But otherwise, he would most welcome if he writes on him.
I am a new comer to this site-
I am 84 and taken to uploading my music archives on internet for music lovers since 2012 when I learnt computer after my retirement at 74 !!
A non filmi Geet by Hemant Kumar—
Chanchal Hiranisi Ek Bala—Can some one share ?
Regards
Mr Sapthagireesan,
It is a pleasure to welcome such a senior member to SoY. I am impressed by your passion. I couldn’t locate Chanchal hiring si Ek bala on the net.
Dear music friends, I have been making futile attempts to hear Hemant’s NFS ‘ Chanchal HirNisi ek Bala’. Why not upload on YouTube? Regards
Mr Sapthgireesan,
Welcome to SOY. We are aware of your request. Posting on YT depends on the uploader. Let us hope it turns up soon.
