Wishing the readers a very Happy Holi
The regular readers of SOY are aware that on Holi, when everyone is out throwing coloured water on each other, I often reflect on some serious issues. Not on things like “What is the Ultimate Reality”, or the nature of Brahma (ब्रह्म) and Jeev (जीव) – Are they different or the same? I leave that for more learned people like Swami Venkataramanaji; I limit myself to songs and films. Some songs frankly leave me confused, these are impossible for me to visualise within the possibilities of physical senses. Now I am not talking about the basic contradiction between science, and literature, poetry and other creative fields. We all know that the moon’s surface is cratered, and, therefore, it can be a metaphor for a pock-marked face, but not for an ethereal beauty which evokes ‘Chaudahvin ka chaand ho ya aaftaab ho’.
Therefore, the next song becomes perfectly logical.

Someone has to be out of his senses to wish his beloved to be like the moon. Anand Bakshi is often dismissed as a writer of flippant verses. But for this one, I admire him as one of the rare persons who wrote a logical song on moon-face comparison.

हां तुम बिल्कुल वैसी हो जैसा मैंने सोचा था

Another fundamental contradiction between science and poetry has to do with the role we assign to ‘Dil’ (the Heart). We have a number of medical professionals on SOY, but it is now common knowledge that the heart is basically a machine which pumps out blood and, with it, oxygen and nutrients to different parts of the body, which keeps us alive. And like any machine which runs 24×7, the heart and its plumbing suffer wear and tear with age. The technicians, i.e. the heart specialists examine the fault, and depending on the extent of the damage, treat it with chemicals (medicines) to clear the lines, or repair its plumbing by ballooning or stenting to declog the arteries, or discard the old plumbing and make bypass with new arteries, or replace it with an entirely new pump. The pump some day finally conks off.
If you find the above description too gory and completely discordant on the occasion of Holi, the short point is that emotions like love, hatred and anger have nothing to do with the heart. All that is the function of another organ, दिमाग (the brain), but the popular culture, literature and poetry have made the whole thing topsy turvy. Science and popular belief tells us that one side of the brain does the rational, analytical thinking, and the other side is concerned with emotions, love, beauty, and creativity like poetry and painting. The ‘dil’ simply does what a good pump is supposed to do, to keep supplying blood to the ‘dimag’.
But the day our Doctors Shetty, Anup, Deshpande and others start singing songs correctly, such as Dimag jo na kah saka wahi raaz-e-dimag kahne ki raat ayi; or Mera dimag todnewale mere dimag ki dua lena, there would be panic in their household, Ye inko kya ho gaya hai! The tragedy is even their doctor friends would shut them up, “Cut out all this science; Frankly Bro, you need help!”
I have a lovely wife. At times she lashes at me, Tumko dil nahin hai, apne dimag par tumko bahut ghamand hai! At other times, she is frustrated, Tumhara dimag itna kum kyon hai, kuchh ismein ghusta hi nahin hai. I am doubly blessed, Hum dil se gaye, hum dimag se gaye, bas aankh mili aur baat bani.
Now please ignore all the drivel I have said so far. I am not so crazy to advocate that we ignore all the poetry, literature, proverbs and metaphors that are integral part of our music, our popular culture and our conditioning. Therefore, I am accepting moon-like beauty, and broken heart, a heartless person and surrendering one’s heart. But after accepting all that, I still find some songs completely impossible.
2. Dil tujhe diya tha rakhne ko tune dil ko jala kar rakh diya by Mukesh from film Malhar (1951), lyrics Kaif Irfani, music Roshan
If you don’t believe me, please allow all the flourishes of poetry and all the popular metaphors. Now look at the lyrics, do you think this song is possible even in your wildest imagination?
I had given you my heart for safe-keeping
But when I ask you for its return
I find you have burnt it to ashes
3. Chale jana tum door bade shauq se huzoor, mera dil mujhe wapas kar do by Rafi from Ambar (1952), lyrics Shakeel Badayuni, music Ghulam Mohammad
Everyone in Bollywood was aware of the above disaster of someone’s ‘dil‘ having been burnt to ashes. So forewarned, Raj Kapoor bluntly tells Nargis, “Leave me by all means, and go away to the farthest corner of the earth. Frankly dear, I don’t give a damn, but you jolly well return my ‘dil’ before leaving.” He is not impressed by her tantrums and leaves her in no doubt that he means business.
Just an aside, please remember the context of ‘Dost dost na raha, pyar pyar na raha’ in the film Sangam (1964). While going for a bombing sortie in the war, Raj Kapoor had shouted from the cockpit, ‘I would come back’. And what did he find on return? He had entrusted his girl to his friend for safe-keeping, and that fellow had betrayed his trust. I am not surprised that he was livid with rage. Lesson: Never entrust your dil, or your girl for safe-keeping even to your most trusted friend. Rent a locker instead. Or make sure to get your ‘dil‘ back intact before either of you goes on a long furlough. I feel sad that by the time of Sangam he had forgotten his lesson.

4. Jaane mera kahan jigar gayaji, abhi abhi yahin tha kidhar gayaji by Rafi and Geeta Dutt from Mr & Mrs 55 (1955), lyrics Majrooh Sultanpuri, music OP Nayyar
We had earlier discussed the meaning of ‘jigar’. It refers to another organ in the body (‘liver’?), but its poetic usages such as Jaane na nazar pahchaane jigar, or Ae jaan-e-jigar dil mein samaane aa ja, or Jigar mein dard kaisa, isko ulfat to nahin kahte, or Jigar ke daag naye gul khilaye jaate hain, are in the sense of ‘dil’, even though the two words are at times used in the same expression. But whatever, does this make any sense?

If a surgeon finds that the jigar he had just kept in the tray in the OT is no longer to be found anywhere, he would lose his job, and the Medical Council may throw him out of the profession, besides being sued by the patient’s family for criminal negligence. But surprisingly, Johnny Walker and Yasmin do not seem to be too concerned for most part of the song. Off and on, Johnny Walker remembers his ‘jigar’ has just vanished somewhere, and starts looking for it under the chairs and tables, but even without finding it, comes back to gallivanting with Yasmin.

Contrast their casual attitude on losing a vital organ, with the panic-stricken Charlie Chaplin when he had merely lost a piece of his shirt-cuff, which had a song written for him. He has to keep dancing for the guests while desperately looking for it all around the dance hall, without any guest realising there is something wrong; and when he does not find it, he improvises at the prompting of his girlfriend.

It happens to all of us all the time. Arre, mera mobile abhi abhi to yahin tha, kidhar chala gaya? Mobile phone is our dil-o-jigar in the new age. We look for it under sofa covers and in every nook and corner. Finally, we call it from another phone. If you had left it on ‘silent’, you had it. But the worst nightmare is when you are strolling and someone on bike snatches it and rides away. There is a big rigmarole, because your mobile might have all your banking passwords and personal data. Block the phone, contact the service provider to block the SIM, file a police complaint in duplicate – not for the fairy-tale ending of getting it back – but to take the acknowledgement to the service provider for another SIM with the same number. This description may not give you the full idea of the hassle. It is infinitely worse.
That was just a mobile phone. Can you guess the reaction of Kamini Kaushal on discovering that someone has snatched her ‘dil’ and run away? She starts singing and dancing with her group of revellers. You don’t believe it?

I think men are more sensitive when their heart is taken away by a lady. Just contrast the above carefree and exuberant dance with the melancholy of the man whose ‘dil’ has been lugged away by the lady by some deception or false assurance.

We all accept sheesha-e-dil which may break. If a glass breaks in your house you pick up its pieces carefully and dispose these safely. But I cannot visualise the scene of a heart splintering into a thousand pieces, some flying over here, and some over there. How do you ever clean up the bloody mess?
This song reminds me of Jawaharlal Nehru’s will in which he wished that after his death, his ashes be sprinkled here and there in a certain manner. And it also takes me to the mythology of the Lord Shiva, mad with grief at Sati’s immolation in the sacrificial fire, dancing the death of destruction with her charred body on his shoulders. The places where different parts of her body fell became sacred Shakti-Peeths. But this one is beyond my comprehension:

But it splintered into a thousand pieces
Some fell over here, some over there, and some everywhere
9. Chaahe to mora jiya le ja sanwariya by Lata Mangeshkar from Mamta (1966), lyrics Majrooh Sultanpuri, music Roshan
If you are invited to a dinner, the hostess would at the end, show around a tray having a number of small bowls, each containing different kinds of mouth fresheners – saunf, laung, elaichi – and candies. You get an enlarged version of this at a wedding banquet. At the end, while leaving the party, strategically placed would be the Paan Counter near the Gate – they are all Banaras Ka Prasiddh Pandit Paan Bhandaar. Even if you are not a paan-person, you would still stop there to scoop out a variety of spicy sweet-salt golis, paachaks, mukhshuddhis, candies to stuff in your pocket or in the fist to gorge on the way home.

फिर कलेजा रख दिया, दिल रख दिया, सर रख दिया
और कहा, चाहे तो मोरा जिया ले जा संवरिया
There is a double impossibility in this song. One, the morbid choice of the objects; two, she offers four objects – khanjar, kaleja, dil and sar – but asks the patron to take a fifth object outside the list, jiya. Many friends on SOY would have written objective type exams for their entrance tests. If the correct answer is not one of the four choices, all hell would break loose, you might flunk the paper. There would be media outrage, the paper setter’s head would roll, the Testing Agency would face blacklisting, and the authorities would have to rack their brains how to moderate the score. The High Courts and the Supreme Court would also enter the fray passing strictures left and right.
10. Humne to dil ko aapke kadamon pe rakh diya by Rafi and Asha Bhosle from Mere Sanam (1965), lyrics Majrooh Sultanpuri, music OP Nayyar
When you offer something at someone’s feet, it is a sign of utmost humility, you do not spoil it by mentioning the value of the gift. In fact we go to great lengths to ensure that the price tag is removed or erased completely. You would never, in your dream, make a crude statement like this:
I have offered my heart at your feet
Now it is for you to think what you plan to do with it.
(Please understand this is a very valuable thing, and you should not throw it around casually.)
I doubt if even Inspector Clouseau, whom it was impossible to teach social and political correctness, would do such a thing.
11. Dil se main mujhse dil takra gaya, ek naya-pun zindagi mein aa gaya by Asha Bhosle from Bus Conductor (1959), lyrics Noor Devasi, music Bipin-Babul
We can understand the metaphor in ‘Jab dil se dil takrata hai, mat poochhiye kya ho jata hai’, or ‘Dil dil se milakar dekho’ – there are two different dils; when they face each other, something happens and sparks fly. But this lady bumps into her own ‘dil’ and her ‘dil’ bumps into her – rushing in a busy street unmindful of the traffic coming from the other direction? Dear Lady, please explain how did your ‘dil’, lodged securely inside your body, bolt out and rush towards you, without you noticing anything unusual? And how did this new pun come into your life? I am sure the Pundit Punkar from Pune, Ashwin was not born then. (Please note, I am overlooking the grammatical aberration; the correct expression should be ‘दिल से मैं (टकरा गई), मुझसे दिल टकरा गया’. I am accepting ‘takara gayi’ had to be silent to fit in the meter.)
By now your head must be reeling. I should spare you more torture, and I am leaving you here to discover more Impossible Songs for yourself.
I especially sympathise with those readers of the SOY who are from pure sciences, medicine, mathematics, statistics, engineering and computer science background – they happen to be in large numbers on this forum. If I may use a cliché, if you throw a dart randomly you would be hitting one of this cohort. It would be the biggest shock of their lives to discover that all their lives they have been discarding science while enjoying the most illogical and impossible songs. I must grant it to Dr Rajesh Deshpande that he had been conscious of this ‘dil’ problem in our songs, and in one of his comments a few months back he posted a ‘dil’ song which was perfectly compatible with medical science.

For the other scientists, mathematicians and engineers on the group, I come back to pure science. And there is no one better than this Swami who spews only science. I should mention a little detail that a few years ago he was charged with rape. One has not heard of that case for quite a while. It seems he fled the country and is now spreading his science from some undisclosed location. Law would take its own course, as the saying goes. However, I am not sure how the law will catch up with him, because from one of his videos I gather that he has become God, now residing at Kailash. He has started visa services for his abode, but I doubt he would permit Law to enter. However, he has not allowed these responsibilities to come in the way of his scientific pursuits. He has done some advanced science, such as proving that E is not equal to mc2. In this short video he talks about his multi-disciplinary work spanning biological sciences, genetics, linguistics and computer science.
In this one, he unifies physics, chemistry, biology and time.
I started with Holi. If Holi is a festival signifying the victory of the good over the evil, of joy and brotherhood, and of forgetting past rancour, why is होली की हुड़दंग an integral part of the festivities? While we are lost in our revelries, the poor cops have to be on their toes, running from one trouble spot to another to contain fracas, violent clashes, and attend to the accidents due to drunken driving. The chaps are really hassled. Therefore, if you see an advisory like this, you should understand the essence of the message:

The poet actually talks about the conversation between the heart and human vision. This also is impossible. I had also taken the same meaning as you are taking, but I had to rack my brain due to the gender error in ‘nazron ki dil se’. The full line refers to the ‘Ye baat kya hai?’ Now the gender fits, ‘baat’ being feminine.

Happy Holi to you too. Tukde hain mere dil ke – Yes, it is strange. The broken pieces have to be cleaned up. There is some saving grace though – it is not as messy as Ek dil ke tukde hazaar huye. If we want peace of mind, I think we have to accept all the absurd songs.

Majority of the songs in your list are associated with dil showing how dildaar you are! The lyricists have played with Dil in so many ( and sometimes weird) ways that there may be a separate post on dil impossibilities.

‘Kaha sab tan khaiyo’ looks quite impossible. Would you know who wrote these lines? These two lines are part of several songs. A very funny use is in Kishore Kumar’s ‘Desh chhudaye bhes chhudaye’ from Chacha Zindabad. These lines also appear in some traditional thumris, such as ‘Maine laakhon ke bol sahe’. That indicates it is a traditional composition whose author is unknown.
I have mentioned our mythology as a source of some of these impossible songs. King Shivi once saved a dove from a hawk. The hawk quoted some scriptures that it had the right over its food, and if the kind king wanted to save the dove he had to offer meat from his body equal to the hawk’s weight. The king promptly accepted. On one scale the hawk was kept, but however much he cut his own flesh, the hawk’s side remained heavier. Finally the hawk revealed itself to be Dharma and blessed Shivi profusely.
Dil jalega to zamaane mein ujala hoga is such a beautiful song that one may not realise it’s impossibility.

Thanks a lot. From Sangam days I have a very poor opinion of Vyjayanthimala. She had all the time in the wold to tell Raj Kapoor who was the object of her love. But what does she do? Sorry for being so late. Normally I am a late starter, so I dont say sorry. But for such a post reply should have been prompt. Actually, first I thought I would use ‘kaunsi chakki ka aata’, but that has been made so commonplace by Gabbar, I left it. Then I was thinking of asking you from which shop you get these ideas, when suddenly I saw your paragraph on Bhabhiji’s therapy, which keeps your dil-o-dimaag durust. 😉 But here I would say that you are not the sole beneficiary of this therapy. I have a few times tried asking my wife questions like ‘ye samajhne ke liye dimaag chahiye’ or the like, to which I always receive an answer ‘agar dimaag hota to main tumhare paas hi aati kya’. And the result : the tea which follows is always tastier than the normal and also accompanied by some snack like paapad or pakoda. So this nok-jhonk is always for the better for us men-folk.
The selection of songs is great and the comments and the songs by friends have provided immense fun. I consider Anand Bakshi a good lyricist, but in Himalay Ki God Men, first he writes ‘tu raat khadi thi chhat pe, main samjha ke chand nikla’ and then he says ‘chand si mehbooba ho meri kab aisa maine socha tha’. But, despite this ‘baal ki khaal’ both songs are great in themselves.
A couple of days ago, my grand-daughters were watching Love In Tokyo and its song ‘le gayi dil gudiya japan ki, paagal mujhe kar diya’ is quite akin to your quote ‘hum dil se gaye, hum dimaag se gaye’.

I was first puzzled by Anand Bakshi paradox. How could the same person who wrote -Thank God, you are not like the Moon – write, Tu raat khadi thi chhat pe nee samjha main chaand nikla? A careful reflection resolves the paradox easily. This is a fun and frolic song in which Manoj Kumar teases Mala Sinha mercilessly. She does not get the joke and in anger her feet slips from the roof. She curses him, मेरी ज़ुल्फ़ है नागिन तो बुरे दिन बस तेरे आ गए. Everyone realised that the joke has gone too far, and Anand Bakshi then wrote a serious and correct song, Chaand si mehbooba ho meri kab.

‘Dil mera aaj Kho gaya hai kahin’: Joy Mukherjee suspects Saira Bano must have covered it under his feet. I believe it would have been quite common those days too. These days I am watching one of the stupidest soaps. After spending about two weeks on the intrigue around ‘Jaipur ki pyaz ki kachori’, now the vamps are on to a ‘kangan’ intrigue. But now the good heroine’s brother suspects something fishy, and as the vamp deliberately drops the bracelet for the heroine to see it, her brother foils her plan by putting his foot over it. The bracelet thing is now in its third week.
‘Dil mera le gayi laal batue mein’: Rajendranath was not being stupid. He was a common feature in Shammi Kapoor films. He must have been inspired by Laal chhadi maidan khadi.
Mistaking ‘dil’ as a ticking clock one can accept, but taking it away and selling it in the black market is beyond the limits of imagination.
‘Naaz tha jispe mere seene mein wo dil hi nahin’: Now this is what I call an impossible song. Even a hole in the heart is life-threatening. If the heart is missing altogether, the man would not live for a second, much less singing a song.

I think the first ‘dil cheer ke’ was in Treta Yug, when Hanuman showed Ram inside his heart. I would not blame the lyricists for showing their reverence for our mythology. But I agree with you, ‘dil’ and the ‘body’ co-existing alive and kicking separately is very challenging. In ‘cheerna’ the ‘dil’ remains in situ.
This one must be one of the most impossible songs of hfm.

Your mention of ‘paav-seller on cycle’ brought to mind real stories told by a friend from Meerut who was a cricket and music buff like me. They used to watch test matches with whole family. His Tauji used to make his own humorous comments while watching. In the Calcutta Test of 1974 with West Indies when Parthasarthy Sharma got run out due to misunderstanding with Farrukh Engineer, he sang ‘humse aaya na gaya tumse bulaya na gaya’ and completed the second line in accordance with the situation. On another occasion the same Tauji had hired a labourer for some digging work, who did not do digging as per his liking. Thanks for your comment. Actually once we take the humorous view of the imagery and metaphors which constitute the poetry and call them impossible songs, there can be a lot of dimensions. As AK has rightly said the lyricists did not write them as impossibilities. Anu has also stated that when she says the beauty of songs is being spoiled for our fun.
In the golden era the producers and directors used their imaginations. Udan Khatola was a film produced by Naushad with a story based on fantasy, where an aeroplane crash-lands in an imaginary land. The fantasy was further enhanced in the filming of the first song ‘mera salam leja’ in which some dames led by Nimmi are riding horses (on a trot and not full speed) competing with the speed of aeroplane through the whole song, at the end of which the plane crashes. There are a lot of thoughts which appear imaginary in the antaras, which were written to fit them in the situation.

Actually I heeded the advice of Anu and did not mention some parts from songs of Anupama, because the songs are so great and full of beautiful poetry. All the five songs have ‘dil’ in one form or the other. Look at the least celebrated of them ‘bheegi bheegi faza, san san sanke jiya’. Kaifi Azmi who had used ‘san san san’ for hawa in Kaagaz ke Phool, repeats the san san and fits sanke jiya which has another meaning. The whole song describes nature’s beauty just like Sahir’s ‘pighla hai sona’.
Hope we would enjoy the poetry in the songs as usual after this Holi flavour.

In my grandfather’s generation, people would cite very fitting couplets from Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas on every occasion. Our family priest would chant an appropriate Sanskrit shloka from some scripture at every event. In the brains of our generation, that space had been usurped by Hindi film songs. This had consequences. In one of our school exams (I am talking about the ‘60s), in the Hindi grammar section, we were asked to write a sentence using ‘Achha’ as a noun. The entire class wrote the same answer: ‘Achhon ko bura sabit karna duniya ki purani aadat hai.” Our teacher was aghast. He did not buy our argument that ‘wise men think alike’, and accused us of plagiarism!
By the way, Sahir’s metaphor involving ‘hothon’ and ‘jam’ in the Kaajal song ‘Chhoo lene do najuk hothon ko’ by Rafi (MD: Ravi) fits the theme here:

As someone who has picked up Hindi only piecemeal from films, these strange activities of the liver have been particularly troublesome. Whie English hearts get up to much the same antics as Hindi ones, and spleens and gallbladders have been known to behave poetically from time to time, the liver is not a particularly literary organ for us. Imagine my confusion upon hearing the phrase “jigari dost” over and over, turning to the Hindi dictionary for help, and having to accept that these wonderful friends were all “liverish”! Or being confronted with an overly literal subtitle for the line “khoone dil khoone jigar khoone tamannao ke siva” in “Saari Khushiyaan Hain Mohabbat Ki”: “Blood hearted blood liver, except for wish.”
Another commenter has already mentioned the song “Are Kahe Ko Kahe Ko” from “Chor Mera Kaam” above. This picturization has some useful lessons for filmi lovers, I think. Zeenat can afford to be a little careless with her heart because it seems to be cut out from a tinseled valentine card. If she lost it, she could pick up another one at the corner store. Shashi, on the other hand, has a normal human heart and has to be more cautious with how he treats it. Although he does offer it to Zeenat, when she rejects it, he carefully tucks it back inside his shirt for safekeeping!

You are welcome. Even for Hindi speaking persons some of our songs can tie us in knots. We ignore its meaning and move on with life. For someone like you it can be nightmarish. Heart is universal poetry, but I am curious to know the poetic metaphors relating to spleens and gallbladders. If these can be poetic, liver has a stronger case. You might recall the song, “Tasveer banata hun teri khoon-e-jigar se”. ‘Jigar’ has a long legacy in our films.
“Saari khushiyan hain”: I liked your annotation. Smart boy Shashi Kapoor, he kept his heart for safekeeping in his own locker.
The spleen is a capricious organ to which many different feelings are attributed. One might be extravagant and mirthful because one is “full of spleen,” similarly to being full of good cheer. Sometimes those emotions are equally strong while being negative, causing our friends to “vent their spleens” at us (complain without reason, or be angry with someone who was not actually the cause of the problem at hand).
The gallbladder provides courage. One might “have the gall” to do something unusually bold or that feels beyond one’s capacities. If the gallbladder is not appropriately governed, however, it makes the whole person “bilious” and causes them to speak or behave “with bile.” Someone who is bilious strikes back against entirely imaginary offenses, is easy to irritate and difficult to soothe.

English hearts are anatomically similar to (some) Hindi hearts in that both are stringed although the capabilities of the heartstrings are different in the two cases. A sad occurrence or plaintive music pulls at English heartstrings. Period. Some Hindi women have shehnais located in close proximity to their hearts. The shehnais are autonomous and sound when the possessor of the heart is ‘touched’ by the shadow of her lover (ref. last antara – ‘dil ke nazdeek bajti hain shehnaiyaan’ – of the following song). The pickled ‘dil’ takes the cake. Quite revolting, I remembered a Roald Dahl short story about a woman keeping her deceased husband’s pickled brain with an eye. Not for any love, but for a morbid desire to avenge the obnoxious behaviour she suffered at his hands when he was alive.
‘Jigar’ as a lighter: At least Gulzar is using it as an utility item.
The theme of various uses of ‘dil’ is going on and on. Dil has been equated to ‘khilona’ in quite a few songs. But this one equating dil to makaan is different.

Nice that you are catching up with old posts and this one made you sit up and think of some serious things. About your speculation about the two swamis, the first one is a venerable person whom regulars of SOY know. The last one I am not sure. Even if I ignore the criminal charges against him on the dictum, ‘innocent till proven guilty’, I am clueless about his science. I did study science in my college, but that is rusted now. Moreover, the advancements in science are mind boggling. I posted his videos for those who might be up to date with science. There is no connection between the two swamis, nor is it a coincidence.
