Wishing the readers and their families a very Happy Holi
Colloquial equivalents of Sanskrit terms usually retain their exact meaning, such as singaar for shringaar, barkha for varsha etc. But did you give a thought how in case of jogi, which is the Hindi equivalent of yogi, the connotation changes so drastically? As regards yogi, there is no doubt they are ascetics, detached from the world, engaged in their personal meditation and communion with the divine, in some cave in the Himalayas. “The Autobiography of a Yogi” by Paramhans Yoganand, first published in 1946, is still regarded as a spiritual classic after 75 years.
Jogi on the other hand is a more colourful character. He is recognized by his flowing, usually saffron robes. Generally, he is a householder, who has got into some pooja-path, and is not interested in the mundane affairs of the family. Every village has a few of this species, who generally while away their time at the village temple, and the family gives up on them as persons who are incapable of doing anything useful. That these jogis were not held in good esteem is evident from the proverb Ghar ka jogi jogda aan gaon ka siddh, which is something like Ghar ki murgi daal barabar. In the extreme case of this type, the saffron clothes might be a convenient cover for his incapacity to consummate marriage, such as Mohan Agashe in Mrityudand. In one of the most dramatic moments in the film, when he tries to rough up his wife Shabana Azmi for taking up the cause of injustice to the women in the village, she calls him a dhongi, and taunts, she wished he showed the same mardanagi in the bed. Agashe goes limp at this public exposure.
Jogis are at times pure charlatans. In this scene in the multi-starrer Shaan (1980), you see the jogis led by the Jogis-in-Chief, Amitabh Bachchan and Sashi Kapoor at the rostrum, with joginis Parveen Babi and Bindiya Goswami, and their band of follower jogis dancing and singing to the gullible audience. You are sure they are not there for any spiritual pursuits.
Daria mein jahaz chale paas aa, dekho naya aaj tamasha by Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle and Usha Mangeshkar from Shaan (1980), lyrics Anand Bakshi, music RD Burman
Johnny Walker dons jogi dress in Chaudahvin Ka Chaand, but for altruistic purpose, singing Ye duniya gol hai.
Another colourful type is sadhu. If jogi dons saffron, a sadhu is at times semi-clad, with ashes smeared on his body. He has matted hair, and some weird adornments on his person like beads and trinklets. He would be carrying kamandal and some kind of trishul. He generally announces his arrival with Alakh Niranjan, and scares the gullible by predicting grave misfortune if you don’t follow his prescriptions. Hindi film comedians (and even heroes) generally don this disguise to scare the girl’s father into agreeing to give away his girl to him.
With the peccadilloes of some recent swamis, swami also falls in the ambiguous category. Dev Anand in Guide dons the garb of a swami as a camouflage to start with, but the faith of the people makes him a real swami, and leads to his ultimate sacrifice.
Where does a Baba fit in? In 1935, KC Dey sang a profound Baba man ki ankhen khol. Today, a famous Baba not only teaches yoga, he runs a corporate empire giving tough competition to FMCG multi-nationals. That is not quite objectionable. But the word ‘Baba’ evokes the image of a lech, who seduces his female devotees and does unspeakable things to them. Some of them are serving jail terms on conviction for rape.
That leaves Yogi, Rishi, Muni and Sant (संत) as unambiguously worthy of reverence, and I doubt you would find many songs on them. But as for Jogi, Hindi film songs capture various shades of his character. Here are some of my favourite Jogi songs. But I must mention only a few jogi songs are light-hearted and comical. Most of the jogi songs of the golden and vintage era are profound, melodious and deeply philosophical.
1. Tere dwar khada ek jogi by Hemant Kumar from Nagin (1954), lyrics Rajendra Krishna, music Hemant Kumar
If anything, one word to describe Hemant Kumar’s voice is ‘gravitas’. But when he sings this jogi song there is naughtiness in his voice because the purpose is surely not other-wordly pursuits, but wooing his beloved who is barred from him because of enmities between the two clans.
2. Manmeet jogi ban ke O gori aya hai ab tere dware…Sainya se nazrein mila le by Manna Dey from Baadal (1966), lyrics Asad Bhopali, music Usha Khanna
Pradeep Kumar singing in Hemant Kumar’s voice was still dignified, but Sanjeev Kumar lip-synching Manna Dey goes full blast in playing an unrestrained ‘jogi’ to woo his girl. A beautiful song with excellent picturisation.
3. Jogiya kahan jaane laga hai munh pher ke by Asha Bhosle from Khota Paisa (1958), lyrics Rajendra Krishna, Madan Mohan
Shyama is trying to seduce Johnny Walker in his tapasya as the apsaras did to the rishis in our Puranas, though he does not seem to need much seducing. There was something about Johnny Walker’s appearance and his facial gestures that made him a natural as a fake jogi, and the film-makers often created such scenes for him.
4. Zara man ki kiwadiya khol by Rafi from Kohinoor (1960), lyrics Shakeel Badayuni, music Naushad
It is clear why Dilip Kumar dons the guise of a jogi – Jogi ka roop liya preetam ne tere/ Gori sun le balam ke bol/ Sainya tere dwaare khade.
5. Ho main ban ke jogan ayi teri gali khidki mein aa ja by Snehprabha Pradhan from Preet (1945), lyrics DN Madhok, music Bulo C Rani
This jogan is an unabashed lady who has come to her lover’s alley beseeching him to come even to the window.
6. Jogi aya le ke sandesa by Manna Dey from Post Box No 999 (1958), lyrics PL Santoshi, music Kalyanji Virji Shah
Is this jogi real or again part of a plot?
7. Jogi hum to lut gaye tere pyar mein by Lata Mangeshkar from Shaheed (1965), lyrics and music Prem Dhavan
8. Jao re jogi tum jao re by Lata Mangeshkar from Amrapali (1966), lyrics Shailendra, music Shankar Jaikishan
9. Jogiji dheere dheere by Hemlata, Sushil Kumar, Jaspal Singh, Chandrani Mukherji from Nadiya Ke Paar (1982), lyrics and music Ravindra Jain
Let us now move to some jogi songs which are not frivolous, but deeply profound.
10. Jis jogi ka jog liya ho by Khursheed and KL Saigal from Bhakt Surdas (1942), lyrics DN Madhok, music Gyan Dutt
11. Jogiya mere ghar aye by Ustad Amir Khan from Ragini (1958), music OP Nayyar
Ustad Amir Khan was known for his meditative singing. Even his film songs, albeit just a few, have this effect. OP Nayyar, said to be not trained in classical music, created this great song for a musicians’ musician.
12. Jogiya se preet kiye dukh hoye by Lata Mangeshkar from Garam Coat (1955), lyrics Meerabai, music Amarnath
This Amarnath is different from Pt. Amarnath of the earlier era who was the eldest brother of Husnlal-Bhagatram. He gave music for only one film, but he managed to create an immortal song for Lata Mangeshkar.
13. Jogi jabse tu aya mere dware by Lata Mangeshkar from Bandini (1963), lyrics Shailendra, music SD Burman
Lata Mangeshkar rejoined SD Burman after a hiatus of 4-5 years with two stunning songs, Mora gora ang laile and this superb jogi song, Jogi jab se tu aya mere dwaare.
The ultimate Jogi mat ja mat ja
16. Jogi mat ja mat ja mat ja by Pandit Omkarnath Thakur
We have discussed Jogi mat ja by Geeta Dutt and Juthika Roy on this blog. But the ultimate Jogi mat ja shall remain this rendering by Pt. Omkarnath Thakur in Raga Bhairavi.

A great write up and great song selection. New information for me. Had not known much about jogis or the how they are different from yogis , babas and such others . From Bollywood movies I got the impression that jogis are supposed to be detached from the world but are not so and they make a living out of gullible people.
Here we can see one who is on the verge of becoming a ‘jogi’ and ‘jogi’ is meant to be one who renounces the world. This song has both the words ‘jogi’ as well as ‘bhogi’.

Mr Joseph,
Thanks a lot. You are first off-the-blog with two perfect ‘Jogi’ songs. Now you know, these jogis have no intention to renounce the world for spiritual pursuits. I wish I had included Tu na mili to hum jogi ban jayenge.
AKji,
Wishing you and the SoY family a very SAFE and HAPPY HOLI!!
An unusual but fitting theme on the occasion of the festival of colors showcasing the colorful facets of Jogi. Quite an informative write-up complemented with a nice lost of songs.

Ak ji
A completely different & refreshing look at jogis and marvelous collection of songs ( including a delightful take off on dariya me from Shaan which perhaps was one of the few enjoyable moments of the film).
This stock ( of jogis) is one of the very few which is not affected by business cycles and it is also one of the oldest business which is in fact spurred by technological advances. If some of my friends ( who are on the right side) are to be believed we will soon be entering in to Yogi-Raj.
Here are my picks for the theme
Jogan ban jaungi – Shabab – Shakeel- Naushad – Lata
https://youtu.be/dUAsiFP8qrw
Teri Rab be bana di jodi- Suhag
Suhag – Anand Bakshi – LP – Rafi Asha Shailendra sing
The tune is very similar to jhat khol de kiwad Pat khol de from Afsar composed by SDB.
https://youtu.be/kkJNOxWPWUA
And the ultimate jogan song
Prem jogan – Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan – Naushad- Shakeel
https://youtu.be/HmZnOlWYtqM
Dr Deshpande @4,
Dekhoji ek bala jogi: A perfect Jogi of the first type. The girl’s daddy (I guess) has been sufficiently befooled.
@5,
Tera jogi aya: The girl may be in on it.
@6,
Nice song.
Mr Muli @7,
Thanks a lot. Your right friends were predicting Yogi-Raj or wishing it? I am not on the wrong side, but Shiv Shiv! NaMo NaMo!
Jogan ban jaungi is my great favourite, naturally with Naushad-Lata. There is some old memory associated with this song. A friend in college suggested that Naushad has created two more songs on this tune – Lagan more man ki balam nahin jaane (Babul, 1950) and Ghunghat nahin kholun re sainya tere aage (Mother India, 1957). But he has sufficiently tweaked to create three great songs, which sound different.
Teri rab ne bana di jodi goes well with the image of a flippant jogi.
Prem jogan ban ke: You might recall I also treated is as the ultimate Abhisarika song, with some Vasaksajja prelude.
‘ Dekho ji ik…’/ 1962 / CHINA TOWN / Majrooh Sultanpuri / Ravi / Rafi, Meenu Purshottam

AKji,
Wah Jogiji wah.
No more a surprise nor an unexpected post. We have got accustomed to such custom-made-article from you. Badhay Ho.
And a nice selection of songs.
Posting an obscure song, that occured to me first;
The Jogi appears to be sincere in his seeking! Not a Dhongi
https://youtu.be/D7j5ugRDXfQ
May not very appropriate.
Delightful theme, and I love the way you introduce it and explain the difference. 🙂
And, for a change, a newish song. No jogis in this except for in the lyrics, though. Banke tera jogi from Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcbWTEjUuyk
All Jogi songs I could think of are already covered in the post and comments. I would like to add a performance in raag Jogiya by Rajan and Sajan Mishra. Jogiya is similar to Bhairav, but abandons the gravitas of Bhairav for an unabashed longing for union with the absolute.
https://youtu.be/jmoznHWNEiI
Then there is Jog, which differs from a lighthearted raga Tilang by one note – komal dha, which is used in addition to the shudh one. It is interesting to note the transformation that ragas like Bhupali and Tilang undergo by this simple addition. Bhupali’s pure joy changes to Shivranjini’s longing, and Tilang’s playfulness transforms to a mood of Yogic contemplations. No one better than Amir Khan to present that mood:
https://youtu.be/q7k__sVxWXQ
Sorry for the typo on the previous comment. Jog differs from Tilang by komal ga, not komal dha.
Mr Joseph @10,
Dekhoji ek bala jogi is a perfect Jogi song. Mentioned earlier by Dr Deshpande @4, and my response at @8.
I never knew there was a difference between jogi and yogi. So thanks for that AK ji.
Here is a selection from Heer, sung by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan sahab.

And here are two ‘jogis’ who are themselves charlatans but intent on exposing others. The word jogi doesn’t occur but the song is fun:

Venkataramanji @11,
First of all welcome back after a long gap. After reading this article, you address me as Jogiji! But today is Holi, and everything goes. But I suspect your long absence was for some kind of ‘jog’. Can’t help thinking of the elections in your state between the Lady in White – colour of some sect of joginis – and NaMo of the knee length beard, a venerable Jogi. Shall we call it the “The Battle of the Jogi and the Jogini” and Swami Venkataraman to ensure that they adhere to the Rules of the Game?
Jogiji dheere dheere is a perfect song and was in my list.
Madhu @12,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. I like Ban ke tera jogi. Though not donning the appropriate dress, this jogi is also not a Yogi.
AK ji,
Oye Ramta Jogi, Oye Ramta Jogi
..
Tu Ramta Jogi..
..
Main Ramta Jogi..
From TAAL is a beautiful ARR composition superbly sung by Sukhwinder Singh, Alka Yagnik and chorus. The picturisation on Anil Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai is nice, too.
ANURAAG.
Tere nainon ka main deep jalaoonga..

Tere Joganiya tere pyar mein…
Suman Kalyanpur.
MERA DOST, MERA DUSHMAN.
O Bhole kya bole
Ektara Jogi aaya..
Shotgun Sinha is the Dhongi Jogi here.
I can’t resist mentioning the mediocre title song from DHONGEE, 1979. I don’t think there is a Jogi in this song, though! Because it was very frequently aired on Radio Sri Lanka, I used to hum it often during my Medical College days!
Dil cheena, chain churaya
Wah Dhongee, khoob tene dhong rachaya..
I don’t know whether it will be sacrilege to mention the immortal Prem Jogan ban ke..from MUGHAL E AZAM in the same breath with the other songs.
Subodh @13, 14,
Shujat’s and your explanation make Rajan-Sajan’s rendering delightful. Gravitas would not have been so effective. I think gravitas was second nature to Ustad Amir Khan. Thanks a lot. In ‘Jog’ you have linked that is the mood even when in drut Sajan more ghar aye.
Akji
This jogi is perhaps the most hilarious!

AKji:
Congratulations. Only a master diplomat could have negotiated a risqué subject like this given today’s changing level of tolerance. The ultimate hypocrite is, of course, one who can fool all the people all the time, including himself/herself. In this sense perhaps, Raju guide, as described by you, was the closest to that ideal. And, if that is true then are not we all so much better off if the country is in the hands of true hypocrites?
The beginning of the post with the impact of linguistic vulgarization (colloquialism) on the dilution of the meaning of words is quite perceptive. Talk is cheap, which makes words the perfect weapons for a hypocrite. In some languages, such as Japanese, words and expressions have two forms: one true (Honne in Japanese), and the other formal/ social (read untrue-Tatemae in Japanese). It is interesting that the terms ‘jogi’ and ‘saadhu’ that have entered the vocabulary of the common man, have acquired double meanings, but others, such as ‘avadhoot’, that have not, still retain the purity of their meaning and have perhaps gained in respectability because of the rarity of their use. Here is one of my favourites, ‘Uth to chale avadhoot’ (Hamida Bano, Geeta Dutt in Jogan; M: Bulo C. Rani):

Wishing a very happy Holi to the whole SoY family!
The most handsome Jogi?
This one will win the contest hands down.

Akji,
While listening to the songs again, I noticed my mistake. Must have become rusty after prolonged absence.
Thanks for including the song Jis jogi ka jog liya ho by Khursheed and KL Saigal .
To make amends here is another song, should fit the bill

Yet to get the heat of the ongoing battle between the Tapaswi and the Yogini. I was far away from the hot spot, places more near the capital in the first phase and later in the southern and eastern parts. Returned to Kolkata a few days back.
Jogi is a wonderful topic in HFM! I remember a lovely song Dekhoji on Shammi Kapoor in China Town where he travels in a train along with the heroine must be Shakila! Thanks for the nice topic. I also recollect Shivji Bihane from Munimji (1955) .
Delighted. Such a wonderful of songs of the refreshing subject.

Nice recall. And this Jogi shows no restraint, even parodies parodies venerable KC Dey’s Teri gathari ein laga chor musafir jaag zara.
A song where the word Jogan appeared 50 times!

Canasya @23,
Thanks a lot for your generous words. It is not only the colloquialism that changes the meaning, but certain usages acquire a different meaning. Though ‘Avadhuta’ still retains its pristine meaning thanks to Kabir’s Nirgun, ‘Avadhuta, Yugn yugan hum yogi‘, made iconic by Kumar Gandharva, and so many others who convey an equally meditative meaning. In the song from ‘Jogan’, there is a male voice too, perhaps AR Oza. The mood is of poignant parting. And that takes me to KC Dey’s ‘Jao jao ae mere sadhu raho guru ke song’, conveying the same sense of parting without any hope of reunion. Notice the gravitas of ‘Sadhu’
Jaao jaao ae mere sadhu raho guru ke sang by KC Dey from Puran Bhagat (1933), music Rc Boral

Dr Shetty @24,
You are so right.
@30,
Humse kar le preet joginiya
Jogi kiske meet re murakh
sounds a terrific vintage song, but couldn’t find its YT link. I am sure someone will find it.
Wishing you a happy ‘Holi’! Your article filled in the gap in an otherwise colorless ‘Holi’! Thanks to Corona!!
Never thought of it… ‘Yogi & Jogi’! Even in politics, the difference is too obvious!
The songs of Jogi are enlightening and in particular I liked the ones by masters in classical music!
Neeruahaf @25,
Jogan bana ke piya chhod goyo galiyon mein is a fabulous song. We discussed it in the review of the songs of 1945. I can’t help remarking that there is a gender asymmetry in Jogi-Jogan songs. The Jogi is a funster, but Jogan is mostly a ‘virahin’.

Ektara jogi is an excellent song. This Jogi seemes to have come on an errand for his friend, and establishes contact with his friend’s girlfriend. But the gullible ladies of the village are drawn towards him, looking for some blessing from him for fulfilling their wishes.
One has never seen such a ferocious Jogi-Jogan battle in our mythology. You have not missed anything, seven rounds are still to go.
KB @27,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. You are talking of Dekhoji ek bala jogi which some readers have already mentioned. An excellent song.
Mayur Vachharajani @28,

Dr Deepak Ambardekar,
Welcome to SOY and thanks a lot for your appreciation.
Venkataramanji @31,
Ye jogan khojan nikli hai is a nice vintage song. Whether it is the first we have to do a thorough search of early songs.
Dr Shetty @33,
Main to apne piya ki jogan nice song of 2K millennium. You must have counted the number of times ‘Jogan’ appears! 🙂

@43,
Songs 1, 2 fit perfectly with a sham jogi.
Apne piya ki main to bani re joginiya: it is the mother of the later song you mentioned above, Main to apne piya ki jogan.
@45,
I don’t recall this song.
Dr Deshpande @38, 44,
Jogan ban gayi chhod ke main sara sansar: I like this Jogan. We were talking about BMI of Shammi Kapoor. One has seen her pictures in real life as the Lady of the fitness-freak tycoon. But her BMI must be way out of the chart.
@43,
Nutan stars recognising her Jogi. Pradeep Kumar seems to be quite adept at it, Tere dwar kahada ek jogi made him very famous.
Neeruahaf @46,
This jogan is quite an Item. Salman Khan had a boyish simplicity those days.
@47,
Beautiful song. Thanks for reminding us. So sad that the film bombed, it was a great film at least in parts.
Anup @48,
Thanks a lot.
Jogi O Jogi! Pyar mein kya hoga: A perfect Jogi song.

AK ji;
A perfect gift on Holi celebrations . I am enjoying all the variety of colorful songs on jogi, joganiya , dhongee , sadhu , …and other connected variations. I am too happy that Venkatraman ji has joined after a gap which we all were missing for quite some times. His presence always gets me on vintage platform .
Yes by the time I think of a song it gets posted early to my click button . Perhaps this international fakir was waiting to be posted…..

AK ji @9;
Perfect observations. I entirely agree to your comments . Perhaps there are one or more of naushad songs in these serial tunes.
Mr Muli @55,
I like this jogan which is unabashed about her desires. Such jogans are better than one whining of dejection.
KS Bhatiaji @56,
Thanks a lot. De data ke naam tujhko Allah rakhe is a very befitting song for the theme.
@57,
Naushad has been creative. I have posted some auto-inspirations in which simply different words have been fitted like a Karaoke track.
AK,
Sticking to your Holi tradition well thought presentation.
Happy Holi.
Jogis have gone extinct in reel life but in real life better not talk about them
AK @ 18
Please do not entrust a task to poor Swamy Venkataraman that would have been impossible for Swami Vivekanand too.
AK, @ 37
Your very first song Jogans are funster as well as prankster.

Mumbaikar8 @60,
Thanks and Happy Holi to you too. if our Swami Venkataraman can do something to reduce the bloodshed it would be a great gift to the Sonar Bangla. Ram and Shyam is my great favourite, and this scene in particular I like a lot. Here there is the fake Swami with no malevolent intentions, being lashed by the Tantrik Baba to exorcise his ghost. Beautiful scene, Dilip Kumar is great, and others too do their part perfectly, the wailing ‘mother’, the sceptical and angry Mumtaz and others.
Dr Deshpande @61, 62,
Great fun songs of Jogi.

AKji, a wonderful theme yet again with a great deal of play on words. Drawing a little from the Mahabharata, it is the ascetic – Ved Vyas who solves the problems of the householder. It is him that Satyavati falls back upon for progeny. The ascetic therefore can don the hat of the householder if the need arises!
Would want to add two songs here
1) Kis Kaaran Jogan Jog Liya from Jawab https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GVm1thWk-U
2) The other is more dear to me because of the name of the film – Anita. In this movie Sadhana plays the role of a Jogan . The song is Main Dekhun Jis Oar Sakhi Ri.

Mr Muli @65,
Jogiya mere ghar aye is song #11 in my post. Aaj main jogan ban ke is a nice song of women taking control.
Dr Shetty @66,
Nice varieties. You have added ‘Bairagi’ to the type.
@67,
Nice songs. Chitralekha, of course, is a great classic.
Mr Jospeh @68,
Ek baat bata de jogi, ye jogan kab teri hogi is such a melodious song. Naturally with Hemant Kumar’s music and Lata Mangeshkar’s voice in the mid-50s when she was at her best.
Jogan ban jaungi from Shabab 1954 has already been posted.

Anita @69,
Thanks a lot for your nice words. Now Ved Vyas obeyed the command of his mother as there was a need. But his father Parashar was not performing any Dharmic duty when he felt attracted towards Satyavati (then Matsyagandha). The Venerable Rishi frankly could not control his lust, but Ved Vyas born out of wedlock became as learned as Parashar and an integral part of the epic. That, plus all the boons he gave to the scared girl, redeemed the act.
The first song is great fun. And the second is everyone’s favourite. Thanks.
Dr Deshpande @70,
O jogi jog se mat kar pyar: An excellent song evoking the mythology of apsaras disturbing the tapasya of a Jogi.
@71,
Nice song.
Akji , Pradeepji
Saraswati Chandra had both the hero & heroine becoming jogi ( or leaving in the company of jogis) at least for a brief period. The film also had Nutan referring to her lover as a jogi in one song & then referring to herself as bairagi in another .

The Heer song by Rafi is fantastic , in fact a turning point in story line of Mera Naam Joker . One day you are the king of your world. And the next day, you stand aside, watching it all burn in front of your eyes ….so pathetic !! . Sands slipping out from hand …people talking and walking over the ashes .

Glad to know that you too also like the song of Mera Naam Joker. it’s good to see Raj Kapoor getting some love, otherwise the Raj bashing that goes round the blogosphere is something terrible.
The word ‘ jogi ‘ used towards the end in this song from ‘Naya Daur’ (1957) did not appear to fit into the present discussion . The net revealed the sense in which the word ‘ jogi ‘ has been used in the song and gave me a new meaning to the word ‘ jogi ‘…
‘ The Jogi tribe in Pakistan’s Sindh province believe snake charming is an innate skill that they pass on from generation to generation.’
The lyricist, MD and hero in this movie were originally from near that region.
Though the song does not fit in here , the link (with lyrics)…

Neeruahaf @90,
Raj Kapoor played some lovely roles. I liked him a lot in Mera Naam Joker too, at least in the first two parts. Even after knowing that the film bombed at the box office, I find these parts comparable to best cinema anywhere.
However, on one of the Holis I wrote a ‘serious’ review of the film Sangam. A Raj Kapoor fan blasted me for denigrating him. I hope you don’t read it like him. 🙂
https://www.songsofyore.com/a-serious-review-of-sangam-1964-in-its-golden-jubilee-year/
Mr Joseph @91,
That is an interesting trivia. But I don’t think either Dilip Kumar or OP Nayyar had any connection with Sindh. That part is a lot of kite-flying. Even if there is a Jogi tribe in that part which catches snakes, I would not stretch that connection. It is simply a ‘Jogi’ song of the type we are discussing.
@92,
A poignant song. That is also a flavour of some ‘Jogi’ songs.
AK ji @ 93
I had read your review of Sangam the year I discovered your blog. And I still think about it a lot. As I said then, and repeat now, it is sheer brilliance. At that time too, I had said that the only thing a little jarring about the otherwise pitch-perfect post was the statement as to why Dilip saab refused to be part of the movie. Raj Kapoor might have his weak points but I have never heard of his undercutting the other actor’s role but more importantly that statement was against the general tenor of the post. I wish you’d write more posts like that. We all need cheering up in these days of gloom:)
Neeruahaf ji, @ 95
Agree wholeheartedly. IMO, the legacy (and success) of the movie was the only driving force for him. He would not have (and did not, as per my limited observations) overstated his (or his brothers’ or sons’) role by a minute / inch if not appropriate.
Ak ji
” That leaves Yogi, Rishi, Muni and Sant (संत) as unambiguously worthy of reverence, and I doubt you would find many songs on them.”
This song is about a sant who is as much maligned as he is reverred; whose legacy is frittered away by his so called followers & now appropriated by those who once considered him to be a bete-noire

Thanks for your understanding. Some other readers also found that reference jarring. I must have got carried away in that vein. I am happy all the readers, except the one, understood it was written in an irreverent style.
Mr Muli @97,
Thankfully the reference is to the saintly संत. Even at that time there was a political class who did not conceal that they had a poor opinion of him. Today, all the icons come handy at convenience.

Not to take away anything from your veneration of the sant but personally I find the line: “De Di Hume Azadi bina Khadag, bina dhal” from the song in very bad taste and totally dishonest. In one line, they sweep away sacrifices made by thousands of men and women who rotted away in jails, were executed, tied to mouths of canon , went insane because of torture and what not because their methods were militant and they resorted to khadag, dhals, bombs, and bullets. Did they have no role to play in the freedom of this country?

A very nice parody song. I can’t figure out if the first song, too, is a parody of some OP Nayyar song.
@104,
Thanks for posting some ‘Yogi’ songs. ‘Yogi’ seems to carry a different flavour from ‘Jogi’.
@106,
Nice Abhisarika song.
@110,
Nice song. It is also a ‘Raja-Rani’ song.
Neeruahaf @107,
I didn’t want to enter political-historical territory. It is always problematic and very complex. But if you permit me, quickly, it is just a 3-minute song, not a capsule of the history of our Independence. The song is an eulogy to Gandhi’s non-violence, and his mass movements of resistance.
Did it solely win the Independence? Of course not. Gandhi’s importance lies that this was a unique experiment of its kind in history against a mighty empire. He became an inspiration for other such movements abroad, such as Martin Luther King’s in the US. It was astounding even for the Indian National Congress which had been in existence for 30 years before he started his first protest in Champaran. The INC then consisted of elite lawyers whose methods were primarily representation to the British, meeting in delegations for more participation of Indians in the governance. In addition to the sacrifice of thousands you have rightly alluded to, I would mention a few more factors:
i. Parallel to the movements, the British, right from the Company days, were enacting various legislations, Regulations for more participation and representations. Government of India Act 1935 was a watershed, which became the foundation of our Constitution.
ii. The British opinion had two strands: One believed in the noble purpose of the ‘Empire’, i.e. the ‘White Man’s Burden’ to bring civilisation to the people caught in ‘ignorance’ and backwardness. The other was the gradual feeling of guilt at keeping other people under subjugation. By the 1940s the Imperialists were seen as bigoted and anachronistic.
iii. Forces of history. By the end of WWII the devastated Europe was not willing or capable of holding on to their empires. That was one reason why the Imperialist Churchill lost the election after showing great leadership in the War. When Mountbatten advanced the date of Transfer of Power from June 1948 to 15 August 1947, it caught the Congress Party surprised and unprepared.
Gandhi had many flaws, this is not the occasion for mentioning them. I just wanted to politely suggest to you that you were probably over-reacting. This song is not meant to undermine other contributions, it is just a song in a context.
Ak ji Neeruahaf ji
With Ak ji’s comprehensive analysis , I will not want to add anything except reminding that Kavi Pradeep also penned aao bachho & ye mere watan ke
AK ji @112, Muli ji @113
Nobody can fault your analysis, AK ji and I am not going to try except to say that perhaps along with the other accentuating factors you could have mentioned Netaji and his Azad Hind Fauj; the red-fort trial of the 3 INA officers: Sehgal, Dhillon, Shahnawaz; and the naval mutiny which finally told the Imperial masters that the British Indian armed forces could not be relied upon any longer and it was time to pack-up. That the advancement of date caught the Congress unawares is one of those tragedies that we are paying for even now. It boggles the mind that even after so many decades of agitation, years of rule in certain states, and esp after the diktat to the British to Quit India, the Congress was still unprepared! Whatever it is, I don’t want to debate this issue on this forum, it being as you said a complex subject-matter which does not yield easy answers.
However, I don’t think I am over-reacting to what others might dismiss as just one line in a song. This song is one of the most influential of the last century being sung in schools, heard over radio, telecast on tv, sung on 15th August, 26th Jan, 2nd Oct, and all other patriotic occasions and functions. And what is the message that goes across: we won our freedom through non-violent means, the others do not matter. I have serious problems with this obliteration and marginalisation of others. It is the same false view of the past that reduced the revolutionary stream of our freedom struggle to a few sentences in our history texts. It is not innocent, it is deliberate. Perhaps in this case we can agree to disagree.
Muli ji: Kavi Pradeep also wrote Aaj Himalaya ki Choti se; Door Hato ai Duniya walon; Chal chal re naujawan; Chal Akela Chal Akela; Insaan ka Insaan se ho bhaichara; Dekh tere sansaar ki halat; Upar Gagan Vishal and hundreds more. What does that prove? I have problems with this particular song and mentioned that.
Neeruahaf ji
My limited point in mentionong other songs was to emphasize that mostly lyrics are tailor made for the given situation, that’s all. I will close the discussion from my side as this is not the forum where we debate over non musical issues.
Ak ji
Back to jogi & this one is very serious

Splendid presentation of the term ‘jogi’ connoting various interpretations by way of apt songs and subtle writing. Nowadays my understanding has improved to a great extent and I do appreciate the songs. How will you interpret the song from the movie Sanyasi, Music Shankar Jaikish

Dr Deshpande @103,
Had a great laugh listening to parody songs. Many famous MDs songs were covered like OPN, SJ, Naushad ..etc.
That reminds me of JW appearing as sadhu / jogi and as Hero against Shyama the successful heroin of those days. There are many hit songs in the film but this one stands as it mentions jogiya… Madan Mohan OPN style.

What an unusual topic to write about! Only you could have thought of it and done such a brilliant job, AK!
Wrt bandish texts in khayal, I don’t recall many with the mention of jogi other than ‘Jogiya mere ghar aaye’ in Lalit that Rahulji has already mentioned in a comment above, but there are quite a few that mention the lovelorn nayika becoming a jogan and going in search of the man to whom she has lost her heart. A well-known bada khayal with such a text is the well known ‘Rasiya ho na jao’ in Maru Bihag, the text of which can be found at
https://www.swarganga.org/bandish_details.php?id=1952
Here is the HMV LP recording of Bhimsen Joshi singing this khayal and the chotta khayal ‘Tadapat raina din’:

This jogan hides a lamp in her aanchal as she leaves the house:
‘Jhan X 4 paayal baaje’ by Lata Mangeshkar from Buzdil (1951). The MD was Sachin Dev Burman and the lyricist was Shailendra, both of whom did a marvelous job of adapting the Nat Bihag bandish to film. Of course, SDB had already recorded the Bengali version ‘Jhan X 4 manjira’ many years previously.

Most afficionados of Hindustani Music have listened to the music of the veteran singer, Padna Takwalkar, and the late violinist, V.G.Jog. Several times, I have had to jog my memory to remember that Padmatai’s maiden name is Joglekar, and this act promptly brought the following question to mind:
Padma jog lekar V.G.Jog ke saath Jog prastut kartin thi kya?
Ashwin @120, 121,

Now there is no doubt you should have written this post. You have अक्षय भंडार.

Rahulji, “Sabarmati ke Sant Tune Kar Diya Kamal’’ is a nice posting. Thanks.
Thanks to Anupji too. Will like to visit your blog soon.
Yet to settle down here after my long hiatus.
AKji,
The two short showers during the past two days, has brought some welcome respite. But the poll heat continues to singe as the contesting parties’ will allow no respite till the end of the month. After missing the first round, the second round provided ample theatrics and fireworks. As Mumbaikarji has said, it is beyond even Swami Vivekananda or all the Swamis and Maharajs of RKM together to bring some semblance of order.
You (understandably) expressed doubts whether “Ye jogan khojan nikli hai’’ was the first Jogi/Jogan song. I could trace four such songs (there will be more) all in the year 1932. But I could not find any link to the songs.
Waah Re Jogi Bajai Prem Ki Bansi Nayi – Subhadra Haran (1932)
Kaun Jogi Hue Kaanon Mein Munda – Radhe Shyam (1932)
Ari Jogan Ab Dil Me Ho Apne Shaad – Indra Sabha (1932)

Bhatiaji, Akji,
I wanted to post a vintage song from Street Singer (1938).
Prem bhikhari premi rogi

Thanks a lot for your detailed comment. Hope now you are here for the long haul. We can be sure the songs of 1932 you have mentioned cannot be traced. I would look up the ‘Street Singer’.

Mukhtar Begum is another addition to the singers who have sung Jogi mat ja marvellously. Thanks.
Akji, Venkataramanji
One of the huge benefits of SOY is that
I am becoming more comfortable with vintage era songs. Earlier I had a very inflexible attitude about them.
Posting here a vintage era Jogi .
Bhiksha de de maiya pingala
Bhrathari-Khemchand Prakash – Pt Indra- Amirbai Karnataka & Surendranath
https://youtu.be/kgf6LaTfWaQ
Arunji had written a review of this movie in which he has lauded the music as outstanding particularly referring to this song.
AK,
What a riveting topic. A very nice connection between Jogi, Bhogi and Dhongi on the occasion of Holi. Arriving so late, but enjoyed a variety of comments by friends and Venkataramanji’s coming back a bonus. This is one of my favourite subjects and you may remember I posted some jogi songs on contra songs topic. But this battery of friends have posted so many that I am finding it hard to post unless I search for them. The latest by Muliji is a master song which I am listening after a long time. The Bharthri-Pingla raginis are so popular in Haryana.
As to the topic, Jogi is a caste across many states including Haryana. They were perhaps nomadic earlier and most of them have settled down now. To me this word is almost same as sadhu, sanyasi etc. but seems to have been used more in films because of ease of using in the tunes, especially when jogan also comes along as useful alternative for songs. In general conversation we hear words like ‘ye sadhu aadmi hai’ or ‘ye to sant hai’ for good type of people, but jogi is not used in common talk. But in songs and films this is the in thing. Your song selection is just great and has shown the use of this word in various situations. ‘Tere dwar khada ik jogi’, ‘jogi hum to lut gaye’, ‘jao re jogi tum’, ‘jogiya se preet kiye dukh hoye’, ‘jogi jabse tu aaya’ and ‘jogi mat ja’ are my eternal favoutites.
A song from Wo Main Nahin, which depicts the dhongi. ‘Chahe purush ho chahe nari’.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnM3XCZkBwM
A song which uses ‘sant’. ‘Sant log farmaye gaye’ from Daadi Maa. A similar topic song replaced ‘Ramchandra’ for sant in Gopi.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YG3VdCLZMBA
Hans,
You have more than made up for your late arrival. Thanks a lot for your generous appreciation. Now I find all words I have mentioned are capable of being used with different shades of meaning. ‘Ye sadhu aadmi hai’ or ‘Ye sant hai’ is also used at times by boisterous friends for someone who is a simpleton, too puritanical. That is one of the peer pressures on a teenager to go astray. Your two songs are excellent.
AKji,
I am yet to scour off the rust as it is evident from my last shoddy posting. Getting into the groove may take some more time.
Yep, it seems going to be a photo finish. The Left-Cong-ISF combo may turn out to be the game-changers. They can eat into the votes of TMC.
Back to the subject of this post. There was a song in the 1933 film Lal-e-yaman, ‘Balma ke kaaran bani hoon joganiya’. A link available in YT has only a line of the Mukhda (00:16).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3ePPwJP_sk
I recollect another song, a Naat, “Jogan ki jholi bhar de, ae shah madeene waale” rendered by (Baby) Noorjahan. Arunji’s opened his series “The Joy of NFS” with a write-up on this song, in 2014. I remember posting a note thanking him for the song and article. That was the first time I heard this Song, soon the song became unavailable. I could locate another link, a shorter version (1:39), uploaded in 2014. As per the uploader of this link and Vidur Sury, this was most probably recorded in 1933. Arunji has mentioned Ghulam Haider as the MD.

However I could find a link to the full version of this song uploaded in 2016. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ko8w6xfGS1s
Hansji @ 133,
Thank you for your nice words. Salaries and wages are the lifeblood. You are one of the mainstay of SoY. The real Satsang starts with your entry. Mehfil mein raunak aa jaati hai aapke aane se.
Thanks for the two excellent songs. Posting another one; in the same league?

Dr.Shetty @ 67,
Here’s a clip that has ‘Sansaar se bhaage phirte ho’, the preceding dialogue, as well as a summary of the take-away from the episode depicted in the song and Sahir’s lyrics. supported by a verse from the Bhagwad Gita. I agree with the summary except for the 2nd half of the following excerpt:
‘Sahir rejects the conception of sin and virtue established by organized religions in favour of a philosophy of universal hedonism’

Rahulji@ 132,
“Bhiksha de de maiya pingala”.- Thank you for the excellent addition.
I think about ten songs from the vintage era has been posted.
Besides AKji, Bhatiaji, & Neeruahf, we had good postings from, Pradeepji, Josephji, & Rajeshji.
Hansji is another connoisseur of Vintage songs.
Glad that you too are in our league.

Venkataramanji,
One can be certain at least of one thing – There is no ‘jogi’ film song ‘available’ pre-1933. Thanks for all the information.
N Venkataraman ji , Hans ji …and all other co benchers;
Piya Ki Joganiya Hoon by Nirmala devi….from Geet ….is new to me. I am happy that there is plenty of gems from vintage and golden periods. They do give different flavors of past decades of 40s and 50s. There are many songs filmed on jogis but the lyrics however missed the word jogi or joganiya. There are however some Non filmi songs which are awaiting postings .

Bhatiaji,
Three nice additions. Like a true Jauhari you have picked an appropriate piece for presentation.
A few words about the songs.
In the late 60s Madhukar Rajasthani and Manna Dey together produced few exceptional gems.
‘Aruna Kanti Ke Go Jogi Bhikhari’;
The poet, Kazi Nazrum Islam, weaves through his selection of words, two of our Pantheons and effortlessly merges them as one. I love this beautiful composition.
For those who do not understand Bengali, a rough translation;
Who are you beautiful vagabond yogi, as radiant as the sun?
You smile quietly standing in front of me. I cannot bear the brightness of your presence.
I am a cowgirl (Ahirini) waiting for union with Shyam.
The dusky form of young Krishna is all I know.
In this unbearable blaze of radiance in the sky I see is not my dark Shyam.
You are the king of the mountains (Girijapati), but where is the holder of the mountains (Girdhari)?
Be kind and restrain this vision of grandeur Hey Bhairava, the lord of the grassland (Brajesha Bhairaba), I am a mere girl of the Brajbhumi (Brajabala).
Oh beautiful Shiva, please change your tiger skin and take the form of Natwar and wear a garland of Kadamba (Nipamala).
Cover your radiance with dark clouds and come as my lover.
Oh the lord of the three worlds I am not Parvati, I am mere Shrimati (Radha).
Please throw away your drum of destruction (Bishan), your bugle of ending the creation and pick up the flute of love….
While on NFS, let me post a song by “Sur Sangeet Ki Jogan” Noorjahan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dvVYzDuDWw
Bhatiaji, AKji
‘’Jogi hey, ke tumi hridi aasane’’ was one of the favourite songs of Swami Vivekanada. Rabindranath was only 23 years of age when he penned this song for his Kavyanatika ‘’Prakritir Pratishodh’’ (1884). It was in praise of Lord Shiva.
If I am not mistaken I have heard Swami Kripakarananda of Ramakrishna Math singing this song sometime back, but no link is available. However a link to Swami Sarvagananda rendition is available.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiAGxTQMFq8
A trivia; There was rumour doing the rounds recently that Swami Kripakarananda may be projected as the CM of Bengal, RKM and BJP denied any such move.
Venkataramanji, @141;
Thanks for your appreciations and detailed translation and meanings of the songs. I have a little links of my childhood life when I used to visit Kali Baari Mandir which was next to our Reading Road Govt allotted house on birla mandir Marg, New Delhi. During Day time Mandir was used to let out to Punjabi community to celebrate or use the premises for reciting shabad and kirtans. Sant Chhela Ram ji used to recite gurubani at Kaali Baari Mandir and I myself along with my Nana ji used to attend the spiritual discourse and that was the time when I was just 2or 3 years old . The famous shabad that i used to like was ….Maan mere bhuule bhuule kapat na ki jiye …. . Sant Chhela Ram ji himself belong to Sindhi community but was a great follower of Sikhism and have written quite a number of translations of sikh history and meanings of shabads in hindi.
Some time a song …..gets going with time ….brings back many memories we have spent during our childhood. The sad moment is when you realize your childhood is over. Yet childhood is a promise that one can not keep it as secret. For me its a way to share with like minded people…..and lubricate our tired mind .
Venkataramanji,
Swami Sarvagananand is a very good singer. Thanks. I like the Swamis who sing well, many do. I have not heard about the rumour, it is too outlandish to believe. RKM could have simply ignored it. If some nosey journalist asked them, they could have simply answered, We don’t understand what you are talking about. We are a spiritual organisation which does some social service. The famous outsider Yogi is quite clearly a political person, still I found that jarring.
Venkataramanji, AKji;

AK, @ 134
I would have given examples from the past, but Anita had already mentioned @ 69. So there was no need. You are right that people call sant, sadhu etc. for their vested interests too, but there are also people who use these words as genuine praise.
Ashwin has @ 137 posted a clip from Chitralekha that says a lot. Chitralekha was such a great philosophical novel, which told us that paap or punya happen just according to circumstances and situations. We define them as per our likings or needs. There the Yogi Kumargiri turns out to be a rogue and the bhogi Beejgupta appears as tyagi. There are many who have redeemed themselves after removing their faults.
Our films have focussed mostly on dharmic people of the majority religion, though there are such people in all religions, who are never talked about. This trend speaks volumes of the tolerance of the majoriy religion.
Venkataramanji,
Thanks for the nice words. I think you have mentioned my name twice or thrice when I was absent. It is our mutual love and respect and actually both of us are missed by friends when we go on unexplained leave. SOY has become like a family. You are one of its most important member. Who can forget the title ‘that who knows more than the blogmaster himself’.
I always have interest in elections of the three big states of UP, Bihar and West Bengal. Your comment at 135 has encouraged me to give some facts and ask a question. In 2016 elections Left-Congress fought together and were second with BJP only 10 percent. In 2019 they fought separately, and Congress almost maintained its base though poor. But, Left lost a great chunk of its votes to BJP. Vote share wise TMC had almost the same both times. Can you give the reason how the Left votes went to the right centric party, if not by design of its top leadership. I know parties who barter their votes do not get them back in future elections. But, is it necessary they will vote again for BJP. What is your take on that.
Hansji, Venkataraman ji
I am glad that you liked Bhiksha de de .
There is an interesting comment by a YouTuber who writes that the song had to be banned then, as many youngsters were influenced by the song & became sanyasis. I doubt the veracity if the statement.
In 1944 I found another song written again by Pt Indra , composed by Gyan dutt . It was rendered by Amirbai now with Bulo C Rani. The song from Shankar Parvati goes
O jogi O bairagi
Teri chintan lagi
I could not get any link for video or audio though full lyrics are available on few sites.

Muli ji,
That is a really great song, written and composed in panjabi tappa style, with same tune throughout. Bhartari-Pingla used to be very popular saang (or swang) in Haryana. Saang is a type of nautanki with lot of raginis. I saw one when I was 12-13 year old and did not like it and it was the end of it.
I think the commenter on the song is totally wrong about the song being banned. In my view, the sadhus have always lived in proximity. I remember in old times some sons used to threaten to become sadhu like Johny Walker in Khota Paisa, when they did not have their way at home. In Haryanvi sadhu is called ‘moda’ and threats of ‘moda ban jaunga’ were very frequent for males as was the threat from females to jump in the well when things did not go their way.
Bhatiaji,
Thanks for posting the Lata and Suman NFS. The compostition of the songs is always different when different composers present them. But perhaps the Geeta Dutt song is still the best being most fitting in the situation of the film.
Not posted yet, I believe….

Hans ji @151,
Yes very true . Geeta dutt ‘s meera bhajan is a lively score …may be it was itched in our childhood when we used to hear during radio days….nay radio gramaphone days with repititive playing during morning and evening . Our little friend of the mid50s….then a teenager and now a retired chief justice….Shri Madan Lokur ….used to play this and many marathi and gujarati vinyl records on our request. We then were living in Man Nagar [ now known as Rabindra Nagar ] . It was adjacent to Khan Market and opposite to Lodi Estate.
For you here is a punjabi song relevant to theme…

KS Bhatiaji @145,
Couldn’t agree more with you about Kishori Amonkar.
@149,
Everyone has given her own interpretation of Jogi mat ja, some become a landmark. These two do not match with the best in my list. Between these two I find Suman Kalyanpur is better in conveying feelings, breath control and holding the notes.
@154,
Roaringly funny song, fits with the colloquial usage of ‘Jog liya’.
Dr Deshpande @152,
Both songs are very melodious. We have another ‘Mat ja mat ja jogi‘, now by Rajkumari. Thanks.
AK ji;
During four five years back we had a great fun looking for songs on themes like ….whistle, yoodleys , and more likes taara ree tara ree on Open House . Everyone as our co benchers like Arvinder Sharma, Ms. Mumbaikar , Hans ji and many others . I was stuck on two occasions …one with the duet whistle song of Yakub and Gope which still I have not been able to recollect….but alas the tara ree song song which i missed suddenly have come to the fore…and that too with the word ….joganiya in its lyrics. Not remembring such songs certainly falls under rare songs .
I think Hans ji will be too happy for the song is composed by his favorite MD Hansraj Behl…..

Hansji @ 147,
Thanks for the nice words once again.
Sorry for responding late to your comment.
You are right. In 2016, Left and Congress had an electoral alliance and Left and Congress roughly had 26% and 12% of the vote share respectively and BJP had 10%. In 2019, the Left and the Congress (they contested separately) had to face erosion in their vote share. Left’s lost a larger chunk. Left’s share went down to 8% from 26% and Congress’s share went down from 12% to 6%.
I do not think the shift of the left votes to BJP was by design of the top leadership of the Left. They do not have such a tight hold over a large chunk of voters who will heed to their diktat. Besides the floating voters, the traditional left votes to a great extent were from the rural peasantry and the East Bengalees. After the Nandigram and Singur fiasco, the TMC could successfully wean away the peasantry support from the left. Bengal’s new generation (including the East Bengalees) too were disillusioned with the Left due to lack of job opportunities, education policies etc. etc. The sympathy and support the Left enjoyed over a long period of time can no way be construed as ideological. Their vote share went below 40% in 2011 for the first time since 1971. After 2011 when TMC came to power the CPI(M) started getting a taste of their own medicine. Violence was unleashed over Left sympathisers and supporters. A divided and depleted leadership could not give protection nor assurance to them. This was the main reason the left sympathisers started shifting their allegiance to BJP in 2019. And on the other hand the Muslim voters too were disillusioned with the left and saw TMC as their saviour from the future right wing onslaught. Thus there was a two-way communal split in the left’s vote bank.
It is always hazardous to make predictions about votes shift and results. My take is that, by deciding to ally with a party led by a conservative Muslim cleric, the left might have scored yet another self-goal. The new (Left-Congress-ISF) alliance is a marginal player in the current contest. Even if they manage to increase their percentage marginally it would hurt the TMC more than the BJP. I won’t be unhappy if I am proved wrong.
Akji @ 144,
Posting a song by Swami Kripakarnanda, Hara Hara Bhuthanatha…… Yogishwara Mahadev
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJilgkqL0zQ
Swami Kripakarnanda is an excellent orator an accomplished classical musician and singer. Swami Kripakarnanda (Debatosh Chakrborty) stood 5th in the secondary school (Class 10) exams and 7th in the higher secondary (Class 12) in entire Bengal. He then ranked 17th in medical joint entrance and joined NRS Medical College. He then did his MD from AIIMS in Delhi, and went for heart research in the US. After his research days in America, Debotosh disappeared, according to a social media post by his roommate from his NRS days. After a few years, he reappeared as Swami Kripakarananda and took charge of the health wing of RKM , Arogya Bhavan at Belur Math.
You are right, monks of RKM do not cast their votes, since they are supposed to have dispassionate disposition towards everyone.
Bhatiaji @ 143, 145, 149

Venkataramanji,
Thanks for the detailed comments which have helped me in understanding it better. I agree with you the voter-party link was not ideological, because there is not a single party which follows any particular ideology. My surprise about the steep reduction of vote share of Left was due to the fact that they are cadre-based party, so there should be more loyalty and more influence of cadre than Congress who has not lost much of its vote-share. Left-Congress link with Muslim Cleric is suggestive of the fact that they want to hurt TMC and favour BJP. In my view this may result in a backlash on the other side. Muslims are generally not inclined to vote for BJP and they would vote for the candidate who is giving contest. Bengalis are very proud of their culture and identity and that factor would also be instrumental. The fear of hazards of making a guess is for experts. We should have no fear. My own interpretation is that TMC is coming back.
