After I had covered the best songs of Kalyanji-Anandji for Mukesh and Rafi, I once browsed through their songs for ‘other’ male singers for a lark. I was amazed to find an enormous variety of singers they had chosen. Though all the songs were well-known it had not registered in my mind instantly. The result was a post on Kalyanji-Anandji’s best songs for ‘other’ male singers. That was, of course, KA1.0 (up to 1970).
Now I have started exploring KA post-70s. Now their main singer was Kishore Kumar, naturally! From Chaand si mehbooba ho meri kab to Kahike paan Banaraswala was a tectonic shift in their style. KA 2.0 and Kishore Kumar were made for each other. I had initially thought that in the same post I would cover other male singers too. But It was a pleasant surprise to notice that they maintained the same diversity in their choice of male singers. Only the boxes of the ‘Main singer’ and ‘Other singers’ were reshuffled. Now everyone else other than Kishore Kumar was relegated to the ‘other’ category. But it is interesting to take a look at these songs for the sake of diversity. They also happen to be of outstanding quality. I would include their duets too with female singers.
KA1.0 had composed some everlasting songs for Lata Mangeshkar and other female singers. I can’t say the same for KA2.0, though they have composed some good songs for Lata Mangeshkar and other female singers.
Mukesh
1. Zuban pe dard bhari dastan chali aayi by Mukesh from Maryada (1971), lyrics Anand Bakhshi, music Kalyanji-Anandji
KA 2.0 continued to create some excellent songs for Mukesh.
2. Tere hothon ke do phool pyare pyare by Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar from Paras (1971), lyrics Indivar, music Kalyanji-Anandji
A nice romantic duet with a delightful beat. The lady’s lips are like two beautiful flowers, what does he need from a garden now? For her, his eyes are like two bright starts, what does she care about the sky?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SQfzg7lYi4
3. Do kadam tum bhi chalo do kadan hum bhi chalein by Lata Mangeshkar and Mukesh from Ek Haseena Do Deewaane (1972), lyrics Qafil Azar, music Kalyanji-Anandji
This song has the unique feature that Sivanandam Palamdai pointed out in a discussion. The first line Lata Mangeshkar sings without any instrumental music or prelude at a slow pace, thereafter KA’s signature orchestration starts.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tasAl07U2cI
4. Kya khoob lagti ho badi sundar dikhti ho by Mukesh and Kanchan from Dharmatma (1975), lyrics Indivar, music Kalyanji-Anandji
Dharmatma was the first movie shot in Afghanistan, in Godfather style. But it could not get rid of Bollywood entirely. Here is a nice romantic duet.
5. Behna O behna teri doli main sajaunga by Mukesh from Adalat (1976), lyrics Gulshan Bawra, music Kalyanji-Anandji
KA 1.0 had composed a chartbuster in Kishore Kumar’s voice, Meri pyari bahaniya banegi dulhaniya. KA 2.0 too created a song for a brother singing on his sister’s marriage – now in the voice of Mukesh. The brother Amitabh Bachchan’s happiness is palpable.
Rafi
6. Aao tumhein main pyar sikha dun by Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar from Upasana (1971), lyrics Indivar, music Kalyanji-Anandji
Rafi was a very prolific male singer for KA 1.0, but their songs came down significantly. But even in that small number they managed to compose some nice songs.
7. Main tujhse milne aayi mandir jaane ke bahaane by Lata Mangeshkar and Rafi from Heera (1973), lyrics Indivar, music Kalyanji-Anandji
I now follow the practice of mentioning the singer who comes first in a duet. That makes a big difference in the impact the song creates on you – for example, this song feels like a Lata Mangeshkar solo.
https://youtu.be/gs6P01RM0Iw?si=TjDjq-a5_Uv6YUZU
8. Badi door se aaye hain pyar ka tohfa laayein hain by Rafi and Mukesh from Samjhauta (1973), lyrics Varma Malik, music KA
Rafi sings for Anil Dhawan, and Mukesh for Shatrughna Sinha. Mukesh’s part is very brief; hence the song impacts us as Rafi-solo.
9. Tumse door rahke humne jana pyar kya hai by Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar from Adalat (1976), lyrics Gulshan Bawra, music Kalyanji-Anadji
Another song from several hits from this film.
10. Saare shahar mein aapsa koi nahin by Rafi and Asha Bhosle from Bairaag (1976), lyrics Anand Bakhshi, music Kalyanji-Anandji
The decline of Naushad couldn’t be clearer. In this Dilip Kumar-helmed movie Kalyanji-Anandji was the chosen music director.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=101mgW-lGe4
Premnath
11. Dagar chalat dekho Shyam kar guiyan by Premnath from Raja Kaka (1973), lyrics Anjaan, music Kalyanji-Anandji
Premnath as a singer? It seems he was a trained classical singer. Here he sings an excellent light classical song.
Manna Dey
12. Yaari hai iman mera, yaar meri zindagi by Manna Dey from Zanjeer (1973), lyrics Gulshan Bawra, music Kalyanji-Anandji
This film came at a critical point in Amitabh Bachchan’s career as it created the Angry Young Man image for him. Gulshan Bawra wrote some of the best songs for KA – both in 1.0 and 2.0. Pran played an endearing pathan who started off with activities on the wrong side of the law. The initial encounters between the righteous cop and the crooked pathan do not go well. But impressed by the cop’s honesty and fearlessness he gives up all his illegal activities. In this superhit song with Arabic music, he wants to cheer up the serious cop, now his friend. As the song is nearing the end it brings a sliver of smile on his face.
Manhar Udhas
13. Hum tumhein chaahte hain aise by Anand Kumar, Manhar Udhas and Kanchan from Qurbani (1980), lyrics Indivar, music Kalyanji-Anandji
Qurbaniwas the smash hit of the year because of Firoz Khan’s style. Many stories circulated about the movie, such as he smashed a real Mercedez Benz in the movie. This must be a real waste, because for most of us a prop or a real thing does not make a difference. It had a groundbreaking Aap jaisa koi meri zindagi mein aaye, a pre-existing chartbuster by Nazia Hassan, which was composed by her brother Biddu, but KA’s own compositions were also superhits. A turning point in Manhar’s career came courtesy Kalyanji-Anandji with his song Aapse humko bichhade huye ek zaman beet gaya (Vishwas(1969), meant to be finally sung by Mukesh. Hum tumhein chaahte hain aise is an equally outstanding song. Manhar can’t help if his voice is so similar to Mukesh.
Amit Kumar
14. Laila main Laila aisi hun Laila, har koi chaahe mujhse milna akela by Kanchan and Amit Kumar from Qurbani (1980), lyrics Farooq Kaiser, music Kalyanji-Anandji
KA 2.0 hit parade continues, now with Kishore Kumar’s son Amit Kumar and Kanchan. During this period we often come across a female singer named Kanchan in KA’s music. She was the wife of Babla, the youngest brother of Kalyanji-Anandji.
15. Oye, oye, tirchhi topiwale babu bholebhale by Amit Kumar and Sapna Mukherjee from Tridev (1989), lyrics Anand Bakhshi, music Kalyanji-Anandji
This song is the best proof of KA’s complete transformation and reinvention from the 50s, 60s style of music making to the late 1980s. The song is funky, Naseeruddin Shah also adapts himself from middle-of-the-road serious cinema to an out and out commercial project with his lip-synching of Oye, oye in a weird dress.
Amitabh Bachchan
16. Mere angane mein tumhara kya kaam hai by Amitabh Bachchan from Laawaris (1981), lyrics Traditional, music KA
This song perhaps represents the Big B’s first appearance as a proper singer and the song became a superhit. It also had a twin female version in the voice of Alka Yagnik picturised on Rakhi. There cannot be a better vindication of my theory of Twin songs: A front-runner and a laggard, though the male version is sung by a non-singer, and the female version by the top playback singer of the time.
Suresh Wadkar and Anwar
17. Haathon ki chand lakeeron ka by Suresh Wadkar and Anwar from Vidhata (1982), lyrics Anand Bakhshi, music Kalyanji-Anandji
By this time many top projects fell to the lot of KA. This landmark film had two thespians, Dilip Kumar and Shammi Kapoor, playing the role of engine drivers and playfully arguing their points of view about destiny and hard work.

Dr Shetty @1,
Jhoom barabar jhoom sharabi: What a lovely qawwali. I should have included it.
Hatjon ki chand lakeeron ka: is song #17.
Other songs are also memorable.
@2,
‘Oye oye.. Tirchhi topiwale is song #15. Songs of other two films?
My aim in this post was to show KA’s range of male singers who sang record-breaking songs.
IMAANDAR
has a beautiful Suresh Wadkar song…
Aur iss dil mein kya rakha hai…
( Has an Asha Bhosle version also ).
Also, the very beautiful
More ghar aaye sajanwa
( Alka Yagnik, Sadhna Sargam ).
Selection of KA songs for Mukesh is excellent! KA in their earlier days gave songs to Hemant Kumar and Subir Sen. A few of their songs could have been included here.
Perhaps a separate post is being created for KA songs for Mahendra Kapoor because they gave several good songs to Mahendra Kapoor.
Dr Shetty @4,
Au is dil mein kya rakha hai: Beautiful song. The male version is more famous.
More ghar aaye sajanwa: Less heard, but I agree with you, it is a very nice song. Excellent classical raag-based composition and dance with modern orchestration. I could find Suresh Wadkar and Alka Yagnik version, though there are two female dancers.

KB @5,
Do you remember any Hemant Kumar and Subir song composed by Kalyanji-Anandji 1971 onwards?
@6,
Mahendra Kapoor figured prominently among ‘other’ singers in KA 1.0, i.e. up to 1970. I find the best period for this combination was 1967-70. I have included six songs of this combination in KA 1.0’s ‘other’ male singers. You may like to go through that post again.
https://www.songsofyore.com/kalyanji-anandjis-other-male-singers/
Mahendra Kapoor might have sung for them 1971 onwards too, but none that I could place among great songs. If you recall any songs we would all appreciate it.
AK ji
A nice collection of KA 2.0 songs for other male singers.
Aziz Naza is invariably associated with qawwali but KA also used him for a Bhajan
Bhajan bina chain na aaye Ram – Rafoo Chakkar – Gulshan Bawra
https://youtu.be/4N1_8ASVn_I?si=h0G4TBO2Z0H51oaz
There was a decent duet by Rafi and Lata in Rakhwala
Rahane do, Rahane do – Rajendra krishn
https://youtu.be/7P2xNi7EKbQ?si=6XN0ZFwWxPQnj5im
And this an average song by the standards of Manna Dey from an ordinary film. However, I still remember it because it was lip-synced by Utpal Dutt.
Sabr ka phal meetha- Atithee – Verma Malik
https://youtu.be/xbQaq54Z2jc?si=nvlSX0shWOD0h4jr
Mr Muli,
Bhajan bin chain na aaye Ram: Aziz Nazan’s forte was qawwali. This bhajan makes it clear it was not his home territory.
Rahne do rahne do is a very nice song for the era.
Sabra ka phal meetha: Our music directors had long discovered comic potential of Manna Dey’s classical based songs. Kalyanji-Anandji have done the same. Not with very satisfying result, I should say agreeing with you.
AK Ji
I remember mentioning about Biddu ( music director of song Aap Jaisa Koi Mere Zindagi-Qurbani) , not being the brother of Nazia Hasan in the earlier blog on K-A. He hails from Coorg, Karntaka and full name is Biddu Appaiah. Nazia Hasan’s brother is Zoheb Hasan , and together they created many non film albums.
Some of the Rafi songs post 1970 with K-A that I would have included:
-there is a gem of a song which strangely goes un-noticed by the majority Mohobbat Ke Suahane Din Jawani Ki Haseen Ratein-Maryada -1971. Giving the link below:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DeCIWABe1t0
-a very popular duet from Haath Ki Safai-1974 Wada Karle Saajana Tere Bin Main Na Rahoon–this song is quintessential Kalyanji-Anandjit style
—Last but not least–Not a full song but few lines-Zindagi To Bewafa Hai Ek Din thukrayegi-Sad version of Rote Hue Aate Hain Sab in muqaddar Ka Sikandar–supposed to have been sung by Kishore only but it is said only Rafi could bring out the pathos so well ..sorry for mentioning this if I hurt any Kishore fans here.
Sivanandamji,
You did mention Biddu.
You ae right. Mohabbat ke suhane din jawani ki haseen raatein is one of the less-heard songs. A good song.
Wada karle saajna was very popular in those days.
Zindagi to bewafa hai ek din thukrayegi: This half-song comes in the end. This sad song was lesss popular than its peppy version by KK. I have to see the movie again though I am not very excited about. This seems to be a film which could very well have a happy ending. You can rest assured, I don’t know of any Kishore Kumar fan on this forum who would be offended.
Only when I read this article, and the discussion thereon, I did recall these Rafi songs.
If good Kishore numbers were eclipsed by Rafi in KK1.0, there are good many of Rafi songs that have got relegated to ‘virtual’ obscurity in KK2.0.
Ashokji,
Thanks for your comments. Kalyanji-Anandji’s transformation from 1.0 to 2.0 is unique among all the music directors.
AK Ji
No need to watch the entire film..I am posting the link to that song–YouTube zindabad!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fp5Qwkrqlyk
For me there is only Rafi 0/0 …Infinity ….just on lighter vein.
I do enjoy listening to all singers of golden era , but Rafi has that slight edge with both his singing ability to render anything and that humility which is his greatest strength. He could just chip in with one ( Nafrat Ki Duniya Ko Chodke in Hathi Mere Sathi) ) or half -a song ( Zindagi to bewafa hai ) or even bear the remarks in the film Abhiman after the song ” Teri Bindiya Re” where ” he” is said to be a “lesser” singer than the female singer…
A true Karmayogi……
Mahendra Kapoor sang quite a few songs in movies like KANGAN , PARAS , MAALIK, VICTORIA 203 and most of them were beyond seventy.
Sivanandamji,
Rafi’s humility is unquestioned. A great human being.
KB,
Kangan did have a nice Mahendra Kapoor song, Jhuke jo tere naina, but there is a limit to the number of songs I could include, and there were so many singers with superhit songs to be included. I think the best period of KA-Mahendra Kapoor was up to 1970.
AK ji#18
There is Usha Khanna – whose music you covered extensively just recently – also humming in this song from Kangan.
Anita,
Thanks a lot for pointing this out.
AK,
Nice collection of songs, but a lot of good songs have been left out. Premnath as singer, I saw his name and had found traces of his voice from dialogues in this song, but still I doubted if he had sung the song. Thanks for confirming.
I would give a list of left out songs but here I would post a few from Mahendra Kapoor to support the claim of KB.
Kanhaiya kanhaiya tujhe aana padega from Malik which also had a Lata,MK version. MK was very efficient in bhakti songs which he showed in Maalik. This song was very popular, but there was another good solo ‘radhe krishan bol’. The lyrics were by Rajinder Krishan.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCIx5zG0Sik
‘Oopar wale teri duniya mein kabhi jeb kisi ki na khali mile’ from Haath Ki Safai is a great song in my view with very funny lyrics by Gulshan Bawra and Satyen Kappu leading his toli of child artists of Haath Ki Safai.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6T8_m1WlB0
O shankar mere kab honge darshan tere from Bairaag was another great bhakti song written by Anand Bakshi. KA gave the bhakti song ‘sukh ke sab sathi’ to Rafi and other songs to MK in Gopi, but here they reversed the protocol and gave all other songs to Rafi and this bhakti song to MK.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWoAWuHMtG0
‘Hum to bikhre moti hain toote hue hum taare hain’ was also another great song from Kathputli which had two versions.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfVMpb39tls
‘Tu ban jaye mehndi ka boota’ was a highly popular duet MK had with Lata in the same film Kathputli.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5g2PL7akSQ
MK had a greatly popular all male duet ‘do bechare’ with KK in Victoria No 203, but that is fit for the KK article. But he also had an almost equally popular triad qawwali song ‘muhabbat bhara koi paigam de’ mainly with Manna Dey and some contribution by Usha Timothi.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ogh4DcK0VjI
Hans,
Thanks a lot for adding so many Mahendra Kapoor songs. From your list I liked the comedy song Uparwaale teri duniya mein kabhi jeb kisi ki na khali miley. The interesting part is it is based on the stock tune of a school prayer. In response to KB I have acknowledged Jhuke jo tere naina from Kangan. Enough to include Mahendra Kapoor in the list of ‘other’ singers. I was going by relative impact by other songs in the same film, and also between KA 1.0 (up to 1970) and KA 2.0.
AKji,
A good follow-up post on KA 2.0 and some nice songs.
Just to mention – #13 Hum tumhe chaahte hain aise has Kanchan as the female singer along with Anand Kumar and Manhar.
Even though KK was their main singer during the 2.0 era, KA continued using different male singers maintaining diversity and variety,
Case in point is Qurbani. Qurbani’s musical and commercial success is a major landmark for KQ 2.0.
They used 7 male singers and 2 female singers for 4 songs excluding Aap Jaisa Koi. Of these, only Kanchan sang two songs,
Rafi’s duet with Asha had its fair share of popularity
Kya dekhte ho surat tumhari
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuoJAe1vYhw
I often wondered why KA took Anwar instead of Rafi for the title song Qurbani Qurbani along with KK and Aziz Naza
Laawaris had one more twin version song, both male versions.
Jiska koi nahin uska to khuda hai yaaro – Manna Dey and KK
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1ap8bP8aG4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3FQ5xj_5bc
And, well, Alka Yagnik was a newcomer when she sang Mere Angne Mein, not a top singer.
Dr Deshpande @23,
Thanks a lot for your comments and addition of songs.
Hum tumhein chaahte hain aise: I had noticed Kanchan’s name in the credits of this song. But I could not hear her voice. On your assertion I have added her name. If you can find a video with her voice please post it.
Kya dekhte ho surat tumhari was indeed quite popular. Rafi-Anwar: Anwar had earned quite a fame of being a ditto copy of Rafi and he got quite a number of songs because of that coincidence. Being younger might have prompted some MDs to use him.
@24,
Jiska koi nahin uska to khuda hai yaaro: Nice twin song. Alka Yagnik had a sharp rise. Recently he had an unfortunate medical condition of hearing loss.
AKji @25
I found one video of the song Hum tumhein chaahte hai aise which features the lines sung by Kanchan. Though, the original scenes of that portion have been replaced.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oaMOrWWTyc
Dr Deshpande,
Thanks for this effort. So you remember clearly that the original scene has been replaced? Could this be an atmospheric/surrogate song for Zeenat Aman?
Song #3 Do kadam tum bhi chalo do kadam hum bhi chale also had a sad solo version by Mukesh , though a different tune
Do kadam tum na chale do kadam hum na chale
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJz7rIcffSc
In Ek Haseena Do Deewane also, KA used 4 male singers – KK, Rafi, Mukesh, Manna Dey.
Ye naach vaach kya hai – Rafi
Hey re rama ram kasam kaisa aaya – Manna Dey
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AA6I0uv98I
Some more Rafi songs, which used to play on the radio during the film releases
Chup chup chup kyun baithi ho – Humrahi ( had made it to Binaca Geetmala annual list)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfaIFl_Nbcc
Ghodi pe hoke sawaar – Ghulam Begum Badshah
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofCjicIg_Bg
O meri chorni o meri morni – Kaatilon Ke Kaatil
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TDgAwGpQPk
AKji @27
I had seen in the movie in its theatrical rerun during my college days and somehow have a vague recollection of Zeenat Aman singing these lines in the waters. But its a long way back.
In this video, scenes from the earlier part of the song are shown in this portion.
Finally, adding one Amit Kumar song which was popular that time.
Ye bambai shahar haadson ka shahar hai – Haadsaa
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oE0hm6zeIU
Dr Deshpande @28, 29, 30,
Do kadam tum na chale, do kadam hum na chale: Very meaningful lyrics, some other day it would have been a superhit song. But its happy version is more popular. This reminds me of Nida Fazli’s couplet:
Na tum bewafa the, na bewafa the.
Bus hua yun ki hum juda ho gaye.
Among the songs you have added, I can recall only Ghodi pe hoke sawar. I must admire you recall of post-1970 songs.
AK ji,
Kalyanji-Anandji were a very popular duo throughout their career. They always churned out songs which were liked by vast majority of people. Of course , 1970s had a different set of audience because more and more cinema theatres were opened in all States of our country . In Delhi there were about 30 cinema halls in 1957. The number rose at a rapid rate and by 1970 Delhi had over 65 cinema theatres. The student community of 1970s had a different taste regarding Hindi songs.
KA as a duo adjusted to the situation and remained in the top pack of MDs.
Regards.
Tyagiji,
It sounds so easy to describe Kalyanji-Anandji thus. But think of many stalwarts, they could not negotiate the choppy waters, many just faded out. In view of this KA’s adaptation was remarkable.
AK ji,
Very true. The adaptation by Kalyanji-Anandji was admirable and seamless also.
One aspect many people sometimes miss is as follows:
In early nineteen-seventies this duo used the voice of Mahendra Kapoor better than other top MDs (Ravi did not get many assignments in that period).
Thanks .
