Kasme vaade pyar wafa sab

18 June 2024

Our elections are now over after a most toxic campaign. When the two formations were not abusing each other they were competing in promising the electorate moon. Voters seem to have now become smart. They must have realised that most of the promises would not be, cannot be fulfilled. There is no free lunch; if someone offers something free, something else has to give way. But one of the two principal rivals came up with a nice tagline: “My guarantee also means a guarantee that the guarantee would be fulfilled.” That is a good one, something like “Raj Raj Raj & Company”. In Shree 420 the dreams of the people were fulfilled, in the real world the voters have to wait for the bounties promised to them.

Now a new-old government is in the saddle, and we are seeing a different kind of kasme-vaade in play. Promises made to the voters are put on the backburner. It is time for the coalition partners to extract the kasme vaade made to them with some arm-twisting.

The kasme vaade in our films are centred around pyar and wafa. In the days of good, old Bollywood love and trust meant gallivanting around bushes and flowers. Social mores have now changed. Now there are various degrees of relationship from ‘just friends’ to ‘situational relationship’ to ‘seeing each other’ to ‘dating’ to ‘committed’ to ‘live-in’. This has given rise to new challenges and new jurisprudence whether refusing to marry is ‘rape’ or ‘breach of trust’. In the olden days it was simple, the victim of betrayal sang: Wafa jinse ki bewafa ho gaye/ Wo vaade mohabbat ke kya ho gaye.

Kasme vaade pyar wafa is ubiquitous and we have zillion songs on this. Let us savour some.

1. Kasme vaade pyar wafa sab baatein hain baton ka kya by Manna Dey from Upkar (1967), lyrics Indivar, music Kalyanji-Anandji

Pran started as a lead actor, then switched on to negative characters and soon established himself as one of the most loved meanest characters on the screen. Upkar was a makeover film for him and kudos to Manoj Kumar for presenting him in a unique positive role. Pran’s character Baba Malang in the film was a detached elderly villager of sane voice. This started his second innings of a chameleon who could alternate between good and a bad guy and more layered shades with ease. Manna Dey is befitting in this philosophical song.

2. Kasme vaade nibhayenge hum by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar from Kamse Vaade (1978), lyrics , music RD Burman

This could be equivalent to “My guarantee means a guarantee that the guarantee would be fulfilled”.

3. Ye vaada karein jahan bhi rahein tum hamare raho hum tumhare rahein by Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar from Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere (1960), lyrics KL Pardesi, music Kalyanji-Anandji

Dharmendra’s debut movie in a lead role sank without trace, but it had some great songs by Mukesh composed by Kalyanji-Anandji. In this cheerful duet Dharmendra and Kumkum are gallivanting with joy.

4. Ye vaada karo chaand ke saamne bhula to na doge tum is par ko by Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar from Raajhath (1956), lyrics Hasrat Jaipuri, music Shankar-Jaikishan

If you promise something in the presence of a celestial body like the moon, it carries more weight.

5. Wafa jinse ki bewafa ho gaye wo vaade mohabbat ke kya ho gaye by Mukesh from Pyar Ka Sagar (1961), lyrics Prem Dhawan, music Ravi

The betrayal of trust causes a great despondency. The song starts with a slow recital: Ho gaye do roz mein barbaad bhi, aabad bhi/ Ab tamanna hai yahi aaye na unki yaad bhi. After the betrayal our hero laments:

Jo kahte the hum to sada hain tumhare
Zamane mein sabse jinhein hum the pyare
Wo hi aaj humse juda ho gaye

We can be sure of one thing – the man was not a politician. Aaya Ram gaya Ram; Paltoo Ram are quite common characters in that arena.

6. Ansoo bhari hain ye jeevan ki raahein, koi unse kah de humein bhool jaayein by Mukesh from Parvarish (1958), lyrics Hasrat Jaipuri, music Dattaram

Many are able to move over, but some are too sensitive. Their despondency knows no depths.

Vaade bhula dein kasam tod dein wo
Haalat pe apni humein chhod dein wo
Unhein ghar mubarak humein apni aahein
Koi unse kah de humein bhool jaayein

7. Ye na thi hamari kismet ki visaal-e-yaar hota by Suraiya from Mirza Ghalib (1954), lyrics Ghalib, music Ghulam Mohammad

One of the couplets of Ghalib in this ghazal was:

Tere vaade par jiye hum to ye jaan jhooth jana
Ki khushi se mar na jaate agar aitbaar hota

Your promise made me live, let that not deceive
Happily my life I would give, if I could but believe
(English translation taken from Rekhta.org)

In the current elections, too, voters have conveyed this message of what they think of the politicians’ promises and many parties must have been chastened.

8. Jo vaada kiya wo nibhana padega by Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar from Taj Mahal (1963), lyrics Sahir Ludhiyanavi, music Roshan

Roshan was the man for Muslim socials and films based on Mughal princes. One of his most remembered songs is stern on promises. Come what may – Roke zamana chaahe roke khudaayi tumko aana padega, Jo vaada kiya wo nibhana padega.

9. Khai hai re humne kasam sang rahne ki by Lata Mangeshkar from Talash (1969), lyrics Majrooh Sultanpuri, music SD Burman

Folk instruments in interludes create magic.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qpO5Og3rJc

10. Tum agar saath dene ka vaada karo main yun hi mast naghme lutata rahun by Mahendra Kapoor from Humraaz (1967), lyrics Sahir Ludhiyanavi, music Ravi

Sunil Dutt finds his muse in Vimi, but she seems burdened by something. He is quite expressive in his love – If you only promise to be with me, I would offer all my songs to you. But the beautiful dumb doll does not show any emotions. I do not remember if Vimi came in another movie. An extremely melodious song, one of the best by Mahendra Kapoor.

11. Hey maine kasam li by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar from Tere Mere Sapne (1971), lyrics Niraj, music SD Burman

A tender movie with great songs, but it was commercially not a very successful film. Mumtaz by now had transformed from a B grade regular or a vamp to a superstar. This film showed her as a superb sensitive actress helped by some delectable by in the film. Both Dev Anand and Mumtaz assert their promise to each other that they would never separate.

12. Tumhein dil se chaha, tumhein dil diya hai, ye vaada karo ki bhula to na doge by Rafi and Suman Kalyanpur from Chaand Aur Suraj (1965), lyrics Shailendra, music Salil Chowdhury

I am happy that what started on a cynical note in the wake of General Elections is ending on a positive note with a series of nice songs based on promises between the lead actors. When the going is good, when the lovers are in courtship phase and happy in sylvan surroundings, they trust each other’s promises and, therefore, there is joy in asking the other person for promise that he/she would not forget. Salil Chowdhury has composed only a handful songs for Rafi. Among these is this gem, my great favourite. I am very happy to end this post with Tumhein dil se chaha, tumhein dil diya hai, ye vaada karo ki bhula to na doge.

AK Ji,
Short but nice collection of songs having Kasme, Vade, Wafa as theme. You have written about politics with a subtle sarcasm–this is a sensitive topic ; even the politics in music world leads to lots of heated debates in blogs!!
Few songs that I could immediately recall:
1) Wada Karle Sajana , Tere Bina Mein Na Rahoon-Haath Ki safai/ Rafi-Lata/ Kalyanji -Anandji/Gulshan Bawara
2) Hai Isi Mein Pyaar Ki Aabroo ( woh jafa karein mein wafa karoon)-Anpadh/Lata/Madan Mohan/Raja Mehdi Ali Khan
3) Zindabad Zindabad Ae Mohabbat zindabad- this starts with the lines Wafa Ki Raah Mein Aashiq ki Eid Hoti Hai-Mughal-E-Azam/Rafi/Naushad/Shakeel Badayuni
4) Dil Jalta Hai Toh Jalne De( this one will be perfectly apt on your basic premise of politicians forgetting their promise–the last stanza goes like this: Hum aas lagaye baithe hain , tum wada karke bhool gaye, ya surat aake dikha jaao– in 5 years??!!!): Pehli Nazar/Mukesh/ Anil Biswas/Aah Sitapuri

Very topical and interesting post AK. I would depart a little from the subject of ‘Vada’ and focus on elections. First, a song on college elections from ‘Aansoo ban gaye phool’. Couldn’t find a video link:

Negative campaigning from Namak Haram:

Finally a politician being questioned on promises made earlier, from Aandhi:

AK Ji,
You said it, Elections are over, with politicians out-promising each other like Bollywood lyricists churning out endless “Waada” songs.
Just like we wonder if those lyricists ever got paid, we now wonder if any political promises will be kept. Ha Ha Ha…

Some Waada songs immediately coming to mind are…
1) Wada Karle Saajna, Lata-Rafi, Haath Ki Safai
2) Kitna Pyara Wada Hai, Lata-Rafi, Caravan
3) Waada Karo, Lata-Kishore, Aa Gale Lag Jaa
4) Waada Raha Sanam, Abhijeet, Khiladi
5) Kya Hua Tera Waada, Sushma Shrestha-Rafi, Hum Kisi Se Kam Nahin
6) Vaada Haan Vaada, Asha-Kishore, The Burning Train
7) Waada Tera Waada, Kishore, Dushman
8) Yeh Waada Rahaa, Asha-Kishore Kumar, Yeh Waada Raha
9) Waada Karo Jaanam- Lata-Kishore
10) Khud Se Jo Waada Kiya Tha, Pamela Chopra, Silsila
Good subject Sir.

Sivanandamji @1,
I avoid any reference to politics like the plague. This one is the closest to any suggestion of reference to politics, because it was so topical to the theme. I am generally an irreverent person, I am amused to see one slotted as a bhakt or a litard. Tum vaada karke bhool gaye for five years! Nice one.

5 Ashok M Vaishnav June 18, 2024 at 10:34 pm

So topical subject. Hats off!

6 AK June 18, 2024 at 10:35 pm

Subodh @2,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. You have collected the most-remembered election songs. I have been scrupulously avoiding politics here or on social media in general.

7 AK June 18, 2024 at 10:41 pm

Gandhi Vadlapatla @3,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Nice compilation of songs. I was somehow thinking of another nice one from Thakur Jarnail SinghSainya se vaada tha nazuk ghadi thi. Political promises – kept? Seems to be an oxymoron. You take free power when it comes, but transformers would get burnt and can’t be repaired. But you can’t crib, that was not the promise.

Vaade and kasme are very interesting topics and already quite a few songs have been identified in HFM. It is a good topic for discussions.

By now I have ceased to wonder about your ability to improvise and come out with apt posts and the present one is one such instance. The songs are fit as a fiddle for the theme running through. Entre nous may I venture to dub your post a la bonne heure .

11 Rahul Muli June 19, 2024 at 5:49 pm

Ak ji
Your irreverence about politics is reflected in the brief yet precise comment on the elections 2024. I particularly liked the term ” the new-old government”. As you say the promises made are put on the backburner but that has been the tradition over the years. Whether it is the promise made by a party or guarantee given by an individual voters’ lament can be succinctly expressed by
Gajab Kiya tere Wade pe eitbaar Kiya
Tamam umra kayamat ke intejaar Kiya
Dag Dehlvi – Mehdi Hasan
https://youtu.be/1SP4lU-_T30?si=bOBZgtNaVTJwpdEQ
From HFM something that comes close to this
Sachhai chup nahi sakati
Dushman -AB-LP – KK

Mr Rangan @10,
Thanks a lot for your generous words. This theme occurred to me serendipitiously.

14 AK June 19, 2024 at 9:30 pm

Mr Muli @11,
Elections are a very funny business. Mid-way the principal leaders discovered that our revered ‘Constitution’ was in grave danger of being trampled upon – by the other side. One carried the Holy Book of Samvidhan to public meetings. It was a touching sight – the Book and the icon Baba Ambedkar. Became a potent message.

I see you are a great fan of Mehdi Hasan. Vaada tera vaada, jhootha hai ter vaada is my great favourite from the era of Rajesh Khanna-Kishore Kumar.

15 Maitreyee Mishra June 20, 2024 at 9:06 am

this gonna be my first comment on this blog, sir.

on of the most memorable couplet regarding that “vaada” and its brtrayal in my mind is by ghalib, this ghazal has two versions” suraiya nad chitra singh. I love chitra ji’s version more, what’s your choice?

“tere wade par jiye hum to yeh jaan jhuth jana
ki khushi se mar na ajate agar aitbaar hota”

16 Malyada June 20, 2024 at 1:40 pm

What a topic to choose, AK Ji. The word ‘ Vaada’ actually fills me with cringe, as it is synonymous in my mind with the song – ‘Vada Na Tod, Tu Vada Na Tod’, Lata, Rajesh Roshan, 1987. This song became very popular and would be blaring out of all the buses/tempos/paan shops. This was the first song where I sadly realised that Lata Mangeshkar’s voice was mortal too, and that probably she should hang up her boots. She did though give us many memorable numbers post this(Rudaali, 1993)..This song to me is the epitome of all the songs she should rather not have sung..

17 S Joseph June 20, 2024 at 2:55 pm

A great post that makes me recollect the so many promises that I had to deal with. One has to be prepared for the worst. Everything is fair in love and war . So one should not be upset if promises are broken . The UPKAR song… ‘kasme waadein pyar…’ says everything about promises (waada). But here is someone who despite all hurdles , kept the promise .

Maitreyi Mishra @15,
Welcome to Songs Of Yore. For anything there is always a first time. Ghalib’d ghazal you are talking about is from Ye na thi hamari kismet ki visal-e-yaar hota. Several singers have sung it. I particularly like the one by Habib Wali Mohammad, but that contains entirely different couplets.

If you ask me between Suraiya and Chitra Singh’s versions, I have not particularly given attention to Chitra Singh. With that caveat my great favourite is Suraiya’s.

19 AK June 20, 2024 at 6:01 pm

Malyada @16,
When did Lata Mangeshkar’s voice start declining. Difficult to put a date. Though she was at her peak in the 50’s, and excellent in 60’s too. Each decade you can see a little differene. I agree with you – 80s and 90s the voice was noticeably thicker and off and on she gave superb songs thanks to the music. She perhaps overstayed her welcome.

Again a nice topic. A lot of songs already, but most of them are from later films, which may lead to an assumption that there were no such songs in older films. In your list too there are just 3 from 50s, 1954 being the oldest.

Mr Muli @38,
Political arena has unlimited possibilities.

1. Vaada humse kiya dil kisi ko diya: This can also refer to a seasonal friend, who after the result makes a palti.

Mukesh’s early classic Dil jalta hai to jalne de had a stanza Hum aas lagaye baithein hain tum vaada karke bhool gaye. This song can also have the same meaning. The coaches are lined up to tranport the turncourts to a resort under kind of captivity. But one person does not turn up at the venue. They have to leave one short.

@2,3: Very apt.

Aaye na baalam vaada karke: Sounds like Hum aas lagaye baithe hain tum vaada karke bhool gaye.

Mr Joseph @39,
Dekh kasam se is a very nice song and shows colloquial use of the phrase kasam se.

@40,
Baaghon mein khilte hain phool kasam teri aankhon ki kha ke: Swearing by something dear entered our common usage at some point of time. Nice song.

@41,
Vaada nibhaungi Sayonara: Just adds a little bit of sincerity to the promise made.

@42,
Tumhein yaad hoga kabhi hum mile the is a fabulous song. I don’t remember Hemant Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar together ever sang a pedestrian song. Nice use of the word kasam in various shades.

Hans @43,
Thanks a lot for adding these fabulous vintage era songs. Except the second song Nahin fariyad karte hum, I was familiar with the remaining three and they are my great favourites.

AKji,

What an enjoyable post, and quite relevant to the current time.
I specially like the way you have interlinked politics and our hindi film songs in your characteristic style.

Some effort from my side, giving some political meaning to some songs:
1. Party loyalists
Humne to lee hai kasam daman na chhodenge hum – Udhar Ki Zindagi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrSOZK6J2zU

2. Party rebels or those who didn’t get the ticket
Hum bewafa hargiz n a the par hum wafa kar na sake – Shalimar
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ODQEjSUnok

3. People’s expectations from the politicians
Irada karo to poora karo vaada karo to poora karo – Insaf Ki Awaz

A nice song by Bappi Lahiri, sung by KK

Dr Deshpande @47, 48,
Absolutely befitting songs and equally creative comments. I must confess out of the four songs you have posted, I was only familiar with Hum bewafa hargiz na the.

A question – answer song from the superhit movie ‘DHOOL KA PHOOL’ (1959) , composed by N Datta . In this song , right from the beginning he is wooing her and gives great assurances . The word ‘ wafa’ is also used throughout the song.

her apprehensions …

( Listen from @ 4′ 58″ into the video)

‘…galat saare daave galat saari kasme , nibhegi yaha kaise ulfat ki rasme , yaha zindagi hai rivazo ke bas mein , rivazo ko tum todana chahate ho…’

and his response to her …

‘…rivaazon ki parvah na rasmo ka dar hai…’
https://youtu.be/aqgSpLC-ia4?si=2fJCO-SFraWt-fhK

( Ultimately he did not have the courage to keep his promises and then see what happened to this lady …
https://youtu.be/jGiIZHX7jgg?si=SaJO5zbfksGXsXJq )

Our politicians promises are always without the ‘ how and when ‘ … and the public is taken for a ride .

Do not know if there are any studies on what percentage of promises are broken.

AK ji,
In this post you have touched upon so many issues – politics and elections, relationships and promises. Each one of them can be discussed and debated for long.

While many songs have been listed on waada, here’s a very different take on it by Gulzar, in his typical style. This is from the movie Sitara (1980). Both the movie and its music deserve more than they got. The song is Thodi Si Zameen, Thoda Aasmaan. The music director is R.D.Burman and the play backsingers are Lata and Bhupinder singing for Zarina Wahab and Mithun:

माँगा है जो तुमसे वो ज़्यादा तो नहीं है (lady)

देने को तो जाँ दे दें, वादा तो नहीं है (gentleman)

कोई तेरे वादों पे जीता है कहाँ (lady)

तिनकों का बस एक आशियाँ (gentleman)

Mr Joseph @50,
An excellent analysis of Ter pyar ka aasra chahta hun. I liked the outcome of not keeping promises: Tu mere pyar ka phool hai.

Percentage of promises broken: I think no such study has been made. I think people know that promises are meant to be broken.

Anita @51,
Excellent song. The last two lines mirror the the thoughts in Suraiya’s song in Mirza GhalibTere vaade par jiyein hum to ye jaan jhooth jana/ Ki khushi se mar na jaate agar aitbaar hota.

54 Sivanandam June 25, 2024 at 5:00 pm

Today, I was listening to Vividh Bharati -25th June 2024 is birth centenary of the great Madan Mohan: I hope this song hasn’t been covered so far in the comments section:
This is the last antara from the famous song…
“Waade bhi hain, kasme bhi, bita wakt ishaaron ka
Kaise kaise aramaan hain, mela jaise bahaaron ka
Saara gulashan de daala, kaliyaan aur khilaao na
Hanste hanste ro de ham, itana bhi to hasaao na
Dil men tum hi base ho, saara anchal wo bhar chuka hai
Kahaan itani khushi chhupaayenge”
…Betaab Dil Ki Tamanna Yehi Hai/Hanste Zakhm/Madan Mohan/Kaifi Azmi/Lata

Sivanandamji,
No this song has not been posted by anyone. A beautiful song, not much known though.

56 Anu Warrier June 28, 2024 at 5:09 am

Lovely collection of promises, AK. 🙂 Many of your comments elicited a chortle from me. But this:
Many are able to move over, but some are too sensitive. Their despondency knows no depths.
In context, this is not true. This is a very self-deprecating song. He has given up his love because his brother loves her too (idiot!) and is kinda sorta asking her to move on. (Because, of course, the idiot didn’t ask her her opinion before this heroic self-sacrifice!) The silly woman is in love with him but of course, who cares?

57 AK June 28, 2024 at 6:32 am

Anu,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. And also thanks for clarifying the context The height of idiocy is when the sacrificing hero tries to convince the lady that beneath the surface he is actually an obnoxious character – an alcoholic, rude to her and obsessed with a kothewali. There is a brief period when this ruse works until his real goodness and the noble purpose for the bad act is revealed.

Dr Deshpande @58,
Superb song, though I can’t say the same about picturisation.

@59,
Sun sun kasam se: Heard for the first time.

@60,
Swearing by a dear person meant sincerity.

@61,
Kasam kya hoti hai: Nice definitional song – the one which is not broken.

Kasam paida karnewali ki: Interesting how it became a street slang.

Jo hum na milenge: A very melodious song in the modern era.

64 AK June 28, 2024 at 10:14 pm

Dr Shetty @62,
Two of the most melodiious songs on the theme.
