Guest article by DP Rangan as a tribute to Madan Mohan on his 45th Remembrance Day (b. 25 June 1924 – d. 14 July 1975)
(Two years ago to this day, DP Rangan wrote a tandem article on Roshan and Madan Mohan about their classical songs, with annotation by Subodh Agrawal, which set the stage for a series on them. The series concluded with Madan Mohan’s daughter Sangeeta Gupta’s nostalgic piece about him as a family man and a maestro. However, meanwhile Mr Rangan had also been working on Madan Mohan’s songs in different moods, and he was disappointed that, with the series closed with the calendar year, his piece might not see the light of day.
You can never have enough of Madan Mohan; he was a multi-faceted talent, composing songs for all the major playback singers, and songs in all possible moods. I am happy to present M Rangan’s guest article as a tribute to Madan Mohan on his 45th Remembrance Day. Thank you Mr Rangan. – AK)
Under inspiration from the blog master AK, I wrote a tandem post involving Madan Mohan and Roshan on 14 July 2018 which was Roshan’s 101st birth anniversary, and in a unique coincidence, Madan Mohan’s 43rd death anniversary. It grew steadily through a number of posts exploring many aspects of their genius, ending with Madan Mohan’s daughter’s fond article on him titled ‘Remembering my father and the legend’ on 25 December 2018. The announcement of the closure of the series by AK disappointed me somewhat because I have been working on a post on Madan Mohan’s songs in different moods. As I don’t see any duplication with the posts in the series (though some songs might have figured earlier), I am happy that AK agreed to post it on Madan Mohan’s 45th Remembrance Day.
Our moods vary with time, place and circumstances we are placed in. Melancholy and happiness are part of our existence. At times we would love to be alone. The basic traits of human beings as cheerful, morose also define how they will react to various situations. Films can also be grouped as slapstick comedies, romantic, tragic and so on. Film songs are composed to reflect all these through the actors.
Music directors meet these challenges by their skill in composing appropriate tunes to reflect the mood as depicted in any scene in the film. We have songs of love, solos as well as duets, comic songs and songs of pathos. Very few music directors are adept in composing such a medley of tunes. I consider music directors C Ramchandra, OP Nayyar and Madan Mohan as leaders in their ability to tackle all such scenes. According to me, Madan Mohan is at the top of the list. He has composed tunes to fit all situations – happy go lucky, romantic, tragic and so on. To buttress my belief, I am presenting songs of Madan Mohan in three classifications – ‘In light vein’, ‘Poignant’ and ‘Lilting/Lifting Mood’.
In light vein
1. Mera naam Abdul Rahman by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar from Bhai Bhai (1956), lyrics Rajendra Krishna
Many pictures of those years used to have a street singing scene with a ringed-in crowd of spectators as audience. Here Kishore Kumar as a Pathan from Kabul and his sweetheart Nimmi enact a boisterous scene of singing in praise of the badam and pista he has brought from his land for sale. What a scene of gaiety.
2. Dupatta mera malmal ka by Asha Bhonsle & Geeta Dutt & chorus from Adalat (1958), lyrics Rajendra Krishna
Pradeep Kumar and Nargis are the main actors. Nargis’s portrayal as a courtesan by accident is par excellence. Tragedy is lit large and yet Madan Mohan has managed to give this excellent light song by Nargis and others.
3. Bada hi CID hai by Mohammad Rafi from Chandan (1958), lyrics Rajendra Krishna
A great hit in the bubbling voice of Mohammad Rafi. Only the genius of Madan Mohan can convey a great philosophy, i.e. God above keeps a detailed record of the deeds, good or bad, of human beings in our mortal world. It is a tragedy that live video of the song is not available. The singer on the screen must obviously be the king of comedians, Johnny Walker. Another song by Kishore Kumar ‘Bhare pade hain is duniya mein’ is also in like vein but nowhere near this one I am presenting.
4. Jaaoji jaao by Mohammad Rafi & Asha Bhosle from Sharabi (1964), lyrics Rajendra Krishna
Dev Anand and Madhubala, particularly the latter, portray the scene of gay abandon.
5. Jhumka gira re Bareilley ke bazaar me by Asha Bhosle from Mera Saya (1966), lyrics Raja Mehdi Ali Khan
A Raj Khosla production with Sunil Dutt and Sadhana in lead roles. A story of entwined twin girls played by Sadhana, this gypsy dance is a class of its own.
6. Suniye suniye aajkal ki ladkiyon ka prograam by Kishore Kumar from Ladka Ladki (1966), lyrics Rajendra Krishna
Kishore Kumar and Mumtaz are leading actors of what appears to be a comedy. Kishore Kumar is at his burlesque best in this song of parody on girls, himself donning a female attire and mimicking their voice.
Poignant Mood
Madan Mohan waves his magic wand and out comes such songs embracing this mood. Here are a few.
7. Chaand madham hai by Lata Mangeshkar from Railway Platform (1955), lyrics Sahir Ludhiyanavi
Lata Mangeshkar has captivated us all with this wondrous rendition and bringing out all in the screen is Nalini Jaywant. I have seen this movie and this song is not included. I am not sure and may be wrong. I leave it to the blog followers to throw light on this because video is live. (The uploader has clarified that the visuals in this video are not from this song/film. – AK)
8. Meri veena tum bin roye by Lata Mangeshkar from Dekh Kabira Roya (1957), lyrics Rajendra Krishna
A tale of mixed identity and misunderstanding but ending well in the end. An entertaining picture by Amiya Chakravaty. Each song is a gem and Madan Mohan has excelled himself. Anita Guha sings in a poignant mood for her lover.
9. Bhooli hui yaadon by Mukesh from Sanjog (1961), lyrics Rajendra Krishna
Pradeep Kumar is broken hearted and expresses it all in this song. A song just made for Mukesh and the great Madan Mohan is fully aware of it.
10. Wo jo milate the kabhi by Lata Mangeshkar from Akeli Mat Jaiyo (1963), lyrics Majrooh Sultanpuri
A piqued Meena Kumari is puzzled at the indifferent attitude of Rajendra Kumar in not recognizing her. The tragedienne Meena Kumari portraying the mood so well.
11. Teri aankh ke aansoo pi jaaun by Talat Mahmood from Jahan Ara (1964), lyrics Rajendra Krishna
Bharat Bhushan is lamenting about his tragic love for Jahan Ara, daughter of Shahjahan, who remained a spinster for life and cared for her father till his last days. One more Madan Mohan classic in the voice of Talat Mahmood to convey the sense of tragedy.
I can go on and add more such songs but do not want to prolong this melancholic mood. As a retribution for my sins, I am presenting such songs which will lift the mood of listeners to one of bliss.
Lilting/Lifting Mood
12. Humein ho gaya tumse pyar by Lata Mangeshkar from Madhosh (1951), lyrics Raja Mehdi Ali Khan
A Wadia production with actors Manohar Desai, Meena Kumari, Usha Kiran and others. Usha Kiran is enticing the hero to love her. Seductive mood is fully reflected in the song.
13. Saanwri surat man bhai re piya by Lata Mangeshkar from Ada (1951), lyrics Prem Dhawan
Main actors are Shekhar, Rehana and Madan Puri. What a lilting song in the sweet voice of a young Lata Mangeshkar.
I am also posting an instrumental version by Shahid Toosy of Lahore.
14. Ae dil mujhe bata de by Geeta Dutt from Bhai Bhai (1956), lyrics Rajendra Krishna
Shyama in the role of a seductress has entrapped a family man Ashok Kumar in her coils. An ideal song to bamboozle a man and Geeta Dutt has added a lilt to the song and Madan Mohan the genius has rightly chosen the singer for the song.
15. Dil dil se mila kar dekho by Kishore Kumar from Mem Sahib (1956), lyrics Rajendra Krishna
Talwar Film Productions with Kishore Kumar and Meena Kumari as main characters. Kishore Kumar wearing a Bond Street alike tailored suit and a short cane stick to boot, is bombarding Meena Kumari with his suit and asking her to keep him in mind. The song had no scope for Kishore Kumar to indulge in yodeling. There is also an Asha Bhosle version too. AK is sure to dub the male version as superior.
16. Hum panchi mastaane by Lata Mangeshkar and Geeta Dutt from Dekh Kabira Roya (1957), lyrics Rajendra Krishna
Joyful pair – Anita Guha (Lata Mangeshkar) and Shubha Khote (Geeta Dutt) are singing and dancing down Marine Drive (Bombay) with no care in the world and Madan Mohan had pulled a rabbit out of his chest to produce this rolling song and matching instrumentation. This is an all-time great song and will never fade away.
17. Teri chamakati aankho ke aage ye sitaare kuchh bhi nahin by Talat Mahmood and Lata Mangeshkar from Chhote Babu (1957), lyrics Indeevar
Shekhar, Nimmi and Agha are the main actors. A lovely duet of love from the magic bag of Madan Mohan in the sweet and dulcet voice of Lata Mangeshkar and Talat Mahmood.
18. Ek haseen sham ko by Mohammad Rafi from Dulhan Ek Raat Ki (1966), lyrics Raja Mehdi Ali Khan
An ebullient Dharmendra in expectation of a blissful connubiality with Nutan is singing this song like a lark. Once again another piece de resistance from Madan Mohan.
I hope that I have put up a convincing case about the greatness of Madan Mohan who could compose songs to cover all possible moods of human beings. Madan achieved his pinnacle and stayed there, i.e., Ad astra per asperaet per ludum (to the stars through hard work and fun)
The title may appear queer to some. The Pied Piper of Hamelin is a legend about an event which happened in 1284 in Hamelin. A piper using his magic pipe dragged away all rats to a river and drowned them and rid the town of rat menace. The greedy mayor cheated on payment. The piper blew his pipe again and enticed away all the children. There is a well-known poem by Robert Browning. It is my contention Madan Mohan had such a magic in his music.
This is a highly subjective topic. Many may dispute my arrangement of songs under the three heads. But I request the experts to bear with an eccentric like me and not throw stones of discord. I have no other alternative but to beg the blog master to rescue me. I am presenting a final song as a last ditch effort.

Rangan ji
Nice article with nice collection of songs.
SDB and Madan Mohan were the only composers from the golden era who held the forte in the face of onslaught from trio which ruled post 70.
I select here my post 70 MM favourite which had both lifting & poignant version
Here is the lifting one
https://youtu.be/3VK4BNEp6Ss
D P Rangan ji,
Once again you have hit the nail right on target with capital T. Yes the T that shows the balance of sway from happy peppy to melancholy songs. The magic wand continues and is unstoppable.
Dekh kabira roya…offered many challenges to MM ji as the film was based on comedy of errors. So one MD like MM ji could only do justice for outcome of this great collection of songs in a single film.
To open my account here is a fast paced rafi asha duet…..hum bulate hi rahe…. The song is highlighted by fast accompaniment of harmonium ….a listener delight to knock on table to match the beats and rhythm.
Oops.here is the link

Muliji Thanks for appreciation of the post which could be controversial with apples of discord in ascendancy. I do not have the qualification or expertise to comment about songs placed in any of the groups. The commentators are in full liberty to do as they please. I will be a mere observer enjoying the songs unearthed without any effort on my part. Since I consider myself as an eccentric I posted the last song to save myself.
AKji – What a masterpiece of introduction which is nothing new. I thank you very much for agreeing to release this post.
Bhatiaji Profoundly grateful to you for the flowery way in which you have appreciated my humble effort. The song you posted is fast paced and full of love. In fact this is played as a background tune when titles were shown at the commencement of the film. I recorded the entire piece of about 3 minutes as mp3. Probably I will try to upload it as a you tube video.
DPR ji,
How can I not jump at the chance of mentioning my Number One Lata song ( I believe, a favorite of many many many others, too))!
Poignant.
Lag jaa gale ke phir ye haseen raat ho na ho..
Raja Mehdi Ali Khan..
WOH KAUN THI, 1964.
Ranganji,
The choice of topic is brilliant! So is the analogy to the Pied Piper of Hamelin! And needless to say, what a well-written article! Congratulations!!
I am familiar with most of the songs save one or two, which I will listen to later on today. In the meanwhile, here is one of my favourite MM-RMAK-LM songs. It is a sad song which I discovered only 2-3 years ago.
‘Preetam teri duniya mein’ by Lata Mangeshkar (MD – Madan Mohan, Lyricist – Raja Mehdi Ali Khan), from ‘Ada’ (1951)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3tD7FRc6QA
Also, I would like to point out that the duet from ‘Dekh Kabira Roya’ is by Lata and Geeta, not by Asha and Geeta.
Mr Rangan,
My introduction is routine, but your article shows your deep love for Madan Mohan’s music. Your enthusiasm and perseverance is amazing. Congratulations.
Can’t resist adding a few more from WKT.
Poignant.
Jo humne dastan apni sunayee
Aap kyon roye?
Lilting / Lifting mood.
Shok nazar ki bijliyan
Dil pe mere giraye jaa..
Asha.
What a song! What interludes!
The ice skating, the expressions!
I particularly go fida over the Aa aa aahaha.
For me it beats Jhumka gira re and other MM _ Asha songs.
In a lighter vein cum Lilting/ lifting.
Tiki riki tiki riki takuri
Tiki riki tiki riki tum tum.
Asha, Rafi, chorus.
Ashwin @7,
Preetam teri uniya mein is a beautiful song. Adaa had two more outstanding Lata Mangeshkar songs, of very different mood.
Aankhon aankhon mein unse pyar ho gaya

Saanwari surat man bhai re piya

Thanks for the correction in the name of the singers in the song #16. Since carried out.
Dr. Shetty
Thanks for jumping into the fray. Expect fire works from you and at least a century of songs of this great music director who occupies a special niche in my heart.
Ashwinji
I am very much moved by the way you have shown appreciation of the post. I must have listened to more than 90 percent of the songs of this music director. I purchased several cds. from road side market in yesteryears of this MD and built a huge mp3. library when you tube was at its infancy. The poignant song you posted is also great. There is nothing mediocre about MM. Still do not understand why he had to copy Sajjad Hussain song in Akhri Dao.
Ranaganji,
‘You cannot have enough of Madan Mohan’
AKji ‘s has just echoed the opinion of very many Madan Mohan fans and you are one of them.
The closure of the series in 2018 might have disappointed you. But everything has a reason and an invisible hand guides through, make things happen, fulfilling the desires of the seeker in pursuit of unalloyed happiness. It was to be so here too.
Thanks for the wonderful article on Madan Mohan. The songs reflecting the many moods of Madan Mohan’s compositions are truly representative, and most of them are familiar.
Thanks once again for the well presented article.
Rangan ji, venkatraman ji,
The greatness of MM songs were the presence of great interludes which created melodious touches to the brilliant compositions …..very appropriate to the indepth lyrics.
Betaab dil ki tamana yahi hai….oh a great song by lata ji from hanste zakham is testimony of a great blend of emotions and composition. MM lived his life entertaining his fans….and include me in lineup.

DPR ji,
A century for an Avant garde composer like MM is a given.
Like you, I , too, had almost all of his cassettes. Have heard most of his available songs. He is among my favorite composers. .. Mainly for his Poignant and Lilting melodies. But, here, for a while, I shall go the ‘ lighter vein ‘ path.
His debut, AANKHEN, 1950 had Rafi and Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, who stayed with him till the end. No Lata. She came in with his second movie, ADA, 1951.
Mukesh, Shamshad Begun, Meena Kapoor were the other singers in AANKHEN. Regular ‘ singer ‘persons, right? Plus, MM, himself and Raj Khosla. Not regular ‘ singer’ persons? No, you are not entirely right!
Raj Khosla was a trained singer, who came to Bombay to be a singer. MM had
only the basic training in classical music for a short time. Still, he performed in AIR Children’s programs, and, later , recorded a few private ghazals. Had recorded 2 duets with Lata for SHAHEED, 1948, under Ghulam Haider, that weren’t retained in the movie. Neither were they released otherwise. Hence, not really irregular ‘ singer ‘ persons.
Humse nain milana BA pass karke..
Shamshad Begum, Mukesh.
RMAK.
The aashiq, Mr Majnu, though not a BA pass, is an MA in ishq! But, the lady wants to see a proper degree certificate. Not a fake one. She can detect his Char Sau beesi!
Rail mein jiya mora sananana hoye re
….
Raj Khosla, chorus.
B D Mishra ?
Rail mein khiladis do tigga, chauka, panjaa , chakka! Mumbai local trains have these scenes every day.
And, Punjabis ? Do halla gulla, halla gulla!
Mathura ke Chaube ? Poori halwa, poori halwa!
Bangali/ Bengali ? Roshogulla, Roshogulla !!
Ranganji @12
There is nothing mediocre about Madan Mohan
A very apt statement.
In fact out of 2Ms in his name one must be for Midas.
Dev – MM is not a very common combination. Sharabi was one of the tare films where they came together . Posting 2 songs from the film
1 sawan ke mahine me ( faster version)
https://youtu.be/6-4stK4F7Ow
Can it be considered as comedy ( black)
2 kabhi na kabhi
https://youtu.be/T4iOgKMV7HE
This definitely is poignant.
Continuing with AANKHEN.
Humse na dil ko lagana musafir
Apne mohalla jaaoge bhool Babu.
Shamshad Begun, Madan Mohan.
Sarawati Kumar Deepak.
The Musafir Babu has come wearing a Nau rupaye hat and a Pandrah rupaye necktie! But , carries no weight for the lady ! One tirchi nazar ,and, the hat will gir ( as in Hindi ) on her feet , and , the necktie will get geela!
Thank you DP Rangan ji for this beautiful study on Madan Mohan . A very respectable MD of the golden era of HFM. You have made your point clear with suitable songs. I feel there could be similar studies on all MDs as they all would have dealt with different moods/situations.
One song…
‘ Do Ghadi woh…’/ 1956 / GATEWAY OF INDIA / MM / Rafi , Lata
https://youtu.be/Sm_tmr7cYQk
In light vein. My earlier comments got typed as lighter vein !
Zaroorat hai Zaroorat hai Zaroorat hai
Ek Sirimati ki, Kalavati ki, Seva kare jo pati ki…
MANMAUJI, 1962.
Kishore Kumar, the singer and actor, Rajinder Kishen.
‘You can never have enough of Madan Mohan’ to me is epitomized by his song
Mati Men Chhed Ke Tarana Koi Dil Ka – Haqueqat (1964) – Mohammad Rafi – Lyrics: Kaifi Azmi
https://youtu.be/7A33IqkN3lg
And one dives bit deeper to look out for forgotten gems, you always come up with at least one every time, like
Unje Kissa-e-gam Likahne Baithe – Naya Kanoon 1965- Rafi and Asha in tandem version – Lyrics – Hasrat Jaipuri
https://youtu.be/XM_4ew2g-O0
MM has so many shades that we can have many more such brilliant articles from Ranganji
I rate Kar chale hum fida jaan o tan saathiyon as one of the most poignant patriotic songs . It is shoulder to shoulder with Ae mere watan ke logon, Watan ke raah mein watan ke naujawan Shaheed ho, Mere dushman mere bhai mere humrahi.
HAQEEQAT ,1962.
Rafi, chorus, Kaifi Azmi.
Another lesser heard song …
Aayee ab ki saal Diwali munh par apne khoon male..
…
Chod gaye woh ghar mein amavas
Jyoti lekar saath chale….
Laments the wife of a soldier who is at the war front. At the same time, she urges the Diwali diyas to light his path…
Rahon mein unke jao ujalon
Ban mein jinki sham dale..
Profound lyrics by Kaifi Saab.
Nice collection of songs of Madan mohan ! Here I wish to add that he was the one of the two composers in the fifties apart from SDB who supported Kishore Kumar . The other was OP Nayyar and to some extent C Ramachandra. As regards the other singers he could have given more songs to Mukesh . After all, almost everything sung by Mukesh were hits at that time! And Mahendra Kapoor also who gave him quite good songs in spite of being given only few opportunities and of course, Talat tuned with him well and so did Rafi.
Venkatraman ji, Rangan ji,
When we say Gems it shows they are of rare qualities and they never ages with times. Their shines ever lastings.
Two of such songs are from old movie ….Samunder…a bina rai premnath starrer. A brilliant compositions and orchestra work. Links will follow as i am on Mobile mode.
Here is link for the first song…

Link for the second song.

‘ Hum hain mata-e …’/ 1970 / DASTAK / MM / Lata
https://youtu.be/Jrdp3LdoiGA
‘ Mai ri mein…’ / 1970 / DASTAK / MM / Lata
https://youtu.be/yX0otJFfBlo
Although Madan mohan was known for solos a few duets apart from Jaoji jaao mentioned above I wish to recollect.: One very well known Talat masterpiece Ye nayi nayi preet hai from Pocketmaar , Kishore ‘s title song from Chacha Zindabad , Rafis two duets from AKELI MAT JAIYO including Yeh to kaho kaun ho tum and another from MOHAR Ae humsafar bata de and one from ADALAT Zameen se hame . Except the last all other songs were with Lata Mangeshkar. Of course Mahendra Kapoor also sang melodious duets for MM like Aapne apna banaya. Anyway great to remember MM!
Lakshmi Shankar, the renowned Hindustani musician, sang several songs for Madan Mohan across the decades. In fact, it was MM who introduced Lakshmi to Ustad Abdul Rehman Khan under whom she started her formal ‘taaleem’ (see article below). Here are a few songs that LS sang for MM:
1. ‘Jhoom jhoom ke do deewaane’ by Mohd.Rafi & Lakshmi Shankar (MD – Madan Mohan, Lyricist – Rajendra Krishan), from ‘Mastana’ (1954)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-mpRoAhRw0
The raga is Bhairavi. I suppose the song can be classified as a ‘Street Song’
2. ‘Cheen se cheeni baba’ by Lakshmi Shankar & Sundar Singh (MD – Madan Mohan, Lyricist – Rajendra Krishan), from ‘Mastana’ (1954)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViAy_uuHklo
The raga is based on Bhoop, which forms the basis of many melodies of the Far East. Note the way MM has used appropriate instruments to give this Far Eastern feeling to the song. (Another song in which the same effect has been created, this time by Shankar-Jaikishan, is ‘Sayonara sayonara’ from ‘Love in Tokyo’). This children’s song can be classified under the ‘In Light Vein’ category of this post.
BTW, I would appreciate if any of the knowledgeable participants in this forum could share more information on this Sundar Singh.
3. The famous medley in ‘Bawarchi’ starts off with ‘Bhor aayi gaya andhiyaara’, a sprightly ‘bandish’ in Raga Alaiyya Bilawal rendered by Manna De, Lakshmi Shankar and Nirmala Arun (actor Govinda’s mother). There is a funny song recited by Harindranath Chattopadhyay in the middle of the bandish and then Kishore Kumar comes in next with his trademark yodeling followed by ‘Good morning, good morning’ in rock and roll style! And the climax is another bandish in Hansadhwani (with a slight deviation into Shankara) ending with the enunciation of tarana bols to which tatkaar (Kathak footwaod) is performed!! One marvels at the range of genres MM has presented in this song – and so brilliantly, at that! – in this medley. The lyrics were penned by Kaifi Azmi!

Song classification: In Light Vein
Here is a write-up on Lakshmi Shankar that SoYers will find interesting. BTW, her sister, Kamala, referred to in this article, was married to director Amiya Chakravarty.

Discovered this delightful song a few minutes back when I was researching ‘Mastana’:
‘Tiggi choki panji chakki’ by Shamshad Begum, Mohd. Rafi & Kishore Kumar (MD – Madan Mohan, Lyricist -Rajendra Krishan), from ‘Mastana’ (1954)

Venkataramanji
Thank you very much for appreciation of the post. I very much savoured the philosophy you propounded in your post. What you stated is gaspel truth.
Muliji
Much obliged for your appreciation and your agreement that MM was top class. Sharabi had many good songs and as you observed appears to be his only venture in music with Dev Anand in lead.
Josephji
Thanks for the appreciation. Yes all great music directors have this attribute of composing appropriate tunes in tune with the scene in the movie. I had already mentioned three other music directors in the writeup. Dastak was a great achievement for him. He was unfortunate in not being conferred Filmfare Award for reasons best known to the organisers of the event. It was a negligence without parallel. For Dastak he got a national award.
‘ Naghma O Sher…’ / 1964 / Gazal / MM / Lata

As well as these:
1. ‘Kunwaaron ka is duniya mein’ by Shamshad Begum & Kishore Kumar (MD – Madan Mohan, Lyricist – Rajendra Krishan), from ‘Mastana’ (1954)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=374eFrloKA4
2. ‘Duniya ke saare’ by Mohd.Rafi ((MD – Madan Mohan, Lyricist – Rajendra Krishan), from ‘Mastana’ (1954)

Vaishnavji
Many thanks for your appreciation and the songs you posted. I think it is beyond my imagination to bring out some new aspects of Madan Mohan as it has been extensively explored by many posts on him in 2018. Since I am a bosom friend of serendepity, I may stumble on some songs to give me a direction on new line of thinking.
KB
Thanks for the appreciation and the bevy of songs you had mentioned. All of them are gems in their own light. Duet from Pocketmar and one from Mohar are outstanding.
Ashwinji @30 and 32
The comment is highly informative and also the hindustani music mastery you display which is a great addition to SOY. It is a matter of wonder that with such rudimentary exposition to classic music, Madan Mohan was able to grasp it and produce outstanding songs based on many ragas, in proof of his genius in music composition.
His father was at odds with his choice of career and never bothered to help him when he was literally in streets. It is said that in one of the films produced under the manner of Bombay Talkies, he had a song sung by his son cut out of the film by using his clout. Talent can never be suppressed and it will find its own way out. He called his father for the premiere of “Aankhen” and after the show, a penitent father with tear stricken face embraced his son and admitted his error in not recognising his musical acumen and the reconciliation that followed did not last long because of the demise of his father within a month.
‘Tum jo mil gaye ho’ by Mohd.Rafi & Lata Mangeshkar (MD – Madan Mohan, Lyricist – Kaifi Azmi), from ‘Haste Zakhm’ (1973)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GYp_B2J_hI
What a composition!
CHACHA CHOWDHURY, 1953.
Duniya, ye duniya Toofan Mail..
Arre, nahin bhaiya,
Duniya paaglon ka bazaar…
Rafi, Shyam Kumar, chorus.
( I think it is a 2 versions song.)
ANPADH , 1962.
Sikandar ne Porus se kee thi ladai..
Mahinder Kapoor, Rajinder Krishan.
A bandish in Yaman about a virahotkanThita:
‘Ja re badra bairi ja’ by Lata Mangeshkar (MD – Madan Mohan, Lyricist – Rajendra Krishan), from ‘Bahana’ (1960):

LADKA LADKI, 1966.
Aa rahe hain samne se chand naujawan
..
Kamal ho ya Kamla, Vimal ho ya Vimla
…
Nahin toh hum samjhenge channa jor garam….
Usha Khanna, Rajinder Krishan.
An absolutely delightful nok jhok song … Kishore, Shamshad Begum. I bet you have never heard SB at such a high and a low scale, that too, in the same song !
Jo tum karo main kar sakta hoon badke
Main kar sakti hoon tumse bhi badchad ke…
The one upmanship or competition involves oonche suron mein gaana, phat phat / jhat phat bolna, dheere dheere bolna and meethe meethe gaana. For the last item , there is a parody ( direct imitation) of Jiya bekrar hai and Balam aaye baso more man mein..
You will not recognize SB’s voice in the dheere dheere bolna section! She sounds so sweet!
ADA, 1951.
RMAK.
Bhatia 14,
You are already in the lineup, right at the forefront.
Betaab dil ki tamana yehi hai…
A nice song; ofcourse somebody will ask which one is not?

Ashwin @30,
Bhoop-Far East: I have read some general observation that the traditional music of China and several far Eastern countries is based on pentatonic scale. Therefore, we may also find similarity with other ragas like Pahadi and Durga in their music. There are also explanations on the internet that this ha to do with their philosophy, such as the Chinese world view based on five elements: wood, water, fire, earth and metal. Possibly traditional folk music in many cultures is pentatonic.

An absolutely delightful nok jhok song … Kishore, Shamshad Begum. I bet you have never heard SB at such a high and a low scale, that too, in the same song !
Jo tum karo main kar sakta hoon badke, Main kar sakti hoon tumse bhi badchad ke…
The one upmanship or competition involves oonche suron mein gaana, phat phat / jhat phat bolna, dheere dheere bolna and meethe meethe gaana. For the last item, there is a parody (direct imitation) of Jiya bekrar hai and Balam aaye baso more man mein..
You will not recognize SB’s voice in the dheere dheere bolna section! She sounds so sweet!

One song that will always come first in my MM list is Haqeeqat Rafi song

D P Rangan ji,
I am enjoying light vein songs and is struck upon thos beautiful peppy song sung by Asha ji accompanied by beautiful whistling . The interlude is beautiful…the violin piece is a great one which i think is of spanish style. The interlude further reminds me of a recent song…angreza…from Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.
Yes title music of Dekh kabira Roye is a great piece of fine composition.
Song from Aakri dao….

D P Rangan ji,
And the lilt goes on . Just listened another melody of fast tapping composition….a song sung by lata ji…
Kadam behke behke pia ….from Bank Manager. If one listen to prelude of this song in a soft slow humming tune you get a feeling of another masterpiece….tere liye humne….a duet song from veer zara . The prelude is just like that of Bank Manager song.

Many Thanks for this post.
For those interested here is the homepage maintained and updated by his son with almost all and accurate details of his compositions.

Mukesh sang in his very first film, a sad solo and a duet with Shamshad Begum. Thereafter, it took Madan Mohan 7 years to recall Mukesh who sang a total of only 9 songs in 6 films.
Temporary digression made by self, AK ji rightly says that one can never have enough of Madan Mohan. His compositions for Lata will always remain on a special platform in the annals of HFM.
Here is a triad from Chowkidaar (1974) sung by Mukesh, Rafi saab and Asha Bhosale.

Thanks for the appreciation and the song you posted which I am hearing for the first time. Quite an unusual tune for MM. Had I heard it without this knowledge would have assumed it is a LP song.

Where is the delay. Next post is not due for another ten days assuming the usual frequency. My thanks for the words of appreciation from you and also the three songs. They are standard MM songs and worth listening any time and any number of times.
Ranganji,
It will be difficult to switch over to any other music once you start listening to Madan Mohans’ songs.
Bhatiaji had commented, brilliant compositions and orchestral works was the hallmark of Madan Mohan. Thank you Bhatiaji for posting the song ‘Hai Unki Woh Nigahein’ , a light vein songs accompanied by beautiful whistling .
And the use of the right instruments in the prelude and interludes was simply outstanding.
I use of violin in both songs ‘Neendiya Na Aaye Tum Bin’ and ‘Mujhe Le Chalo Aaj Phir Us Gali Mein’ enhances the listening pleasure. Thank you Mumbaikarji for posting the songs.
I loved the use of Sitar in this song.

AK @ 45,
I did not know that the underpinning of the pentatonic scales of the Far East lay in their systems of philosophy. Thanks for sharing this information!
BTW, Durga and Bhoop are moorchhanas of each other while Bhoop and Pahadi share a common aarohan!
Here is another corker from the great man:
‘Meri aankhon se koi neend liye jaata hai’ by Lata Mangeshkar (MD – Madan Mohan, Lyricist – Rajendra Krishan), from ‘Pooja ke Phool’ (1964)

I would have classified this under ‘Romantic’ but since Ranganji has not provided this category, I will categorize this under ‘Lilting/Lifting Mood’.
Ashwinji @ 65,
Meri Aankho Se Koi Neend Liye Jata Hai is an excellent number.
And pleasing Sitar interludes.
I believe this was the first song Ustad Rais Khan played for Madan Mohan’s song.
Thanks for posting the song.
Another beautiful composition and good use of Sitar played by Ustad Rais Khan.
The song was present by Ranganji in his previous post on Naseem Banu.
But the interesting part is the Taal Pherta, the Taal variation employed in the interludes. I think Ashwinji you can explain it better.

You have presented a nice song.
There is no finality to song grouping. I just thought of these three and arranged my songs. Where is it said all songs have to be adhere to one of these three. Grouping is not restrictive but suggestive. Feel free to create a new heading – romantic. Idea is to kindle the interest of followers and those who want to actively contribute can do so with their own ideas under this generic. Nothing more to add. Am enjoying all songs unearthed without any effort on my part.
Madan Mohan has not composed many devotional or philosophical songs. Ditto with lullabies , khawwalis and children’s songs. I shall, for the time being, give some of these. I have a dozen or more In light vein ones.
Lullabies/ लोरियां।
Laadle so jaa, laadle so jaa..

I will mention two ‘ proper’ devotional songs/ bhajans. But, before that, an unusual bhajan.
Bhajo Ram , Bhajo Ram
Mori baah pakad ke, Ram..
…..
Mast sham hai
Gum haraam hai
Jhoom jhoom kar jee…
Asha, S D Batish, chorus; Sahir.
Yes, it is a bhajan. While most of the devotees are addressing the bhajan to Lord Ram, the heroine is singing it to Ram, the hero!
Then, from the next plot come the party music which lures the hero’s partner, the second heroine, to dance and make merry while the bhajan continues!
Sunil Dutt, in his debut film, was paired with Nalini Jayawant and Sheela Ramani.
Qawwali.

Rafi, Shamshad B, chorus; Rajinder Krishen.
Hoke maayoos tere dar se…

LP with 11 songs topping the BGM Annual list were way ahead of SJ,6 and KA,5.
SDB,3.
Roshan, R Jain, Nadeem Shravan, 2 each.
RDB(!), OPN, SNT, Usha Khanna, Khayyam, BL, RR, Anand Milind, 1 each.
I don’t think there will be anyone among us who didn’t wait for the clock to strike 8 every Wednesday! I used to have the annual top list by heart!
Venkatraman ji @
Mia legato ji mora sawariya…..is one of my favourite song along with other two classic songs of the movie ….anpad . After listening to these songs Naushad once praised a lot of these songs and told Madan Mohan ji to give him those songs in exchange of his khazana of songs . How close were MDs of those times appreciating each other’s compositions.
The above song is picturised on actress Bindu , sister of Laxmikant of LP . This I think was her debut film. How she progressed is a history.
At one moment of time LP were arranger / assistant MDsto Madan Mohan ji . , Adinarayan ji and of course Kalyan ji Anand ji .
Madan Mohan’s fast numbers are worth listening to . I am posting some songs on space that follows next….
A similar post on C Ramachandra bringing out the post sixties era is requested. I feel his earlier songs of the fifties have been discussed in depth. But in the sixties although he appeared less significant with the competitors like SJ ,LP , KA , RDB etc he brought out good compositions with singers like Mahendra Kapoor and Asha Bhosle and he himself sang lesser songs. He was active upto around 1970 when he scored well for movies like Rootha Na Karo.

Ranganji,
Thanks for one more post on Madan Mohan. As AK ji has said one can never have enough of MM’s music. Although a general impression has been created that MM specialized in ghazals, he was a versatile composer giving out slow, fast, all kinds of songs. The list of songs mentioned by Dr. Shetty alone is adequate to prove it.
His use of Indian instruments has been mentioned here. I am particularly fascinated by his use of sitar in many songs.
The following article in Silhouette magazine talks about his music, particularly about the sitar use in his songs.
https://learningandcreativity.com/silhouette/lata-mangeshkar-sings-for-madan-mohan/
Bhatia ji @72,
Bindu is the sister-in-law of Laxmikant of L-P pair. He was married to her sister.
Ashwinji, (30),
the Sundar Singh is none other than Comedian Sundar who has sung the song Cheen se aaya cheeni baba for the film Mastana. Madanji also used him in a duet with Shamshad Begum in a fun song from the film Ilzaam – O tu hai meri chandaniya gori main hun chanda tera . Unfortunately there is no video or audio available on youtube. I am sharing the mukhda of the song available on Madan Mohan website http://www.madanmohan.in

Namaste Ranganji, So happy to read your article on the various aspects of Madanji’s music in different moods. Enjoyed all the songs shared by you.
There are so many beautiful songs from the 50s that are unsung and people are not so familiar with them. Unfortunately.
What makes me enjoy his songs even more is the pains he has taken wit the interlude music pieces in each and every song.
I would have added classical based songs and fun songs…they could have made a separate list too. But our friends had added so many in their comments.
I wanted to point out that Madanji showed his father the preview of the his first film Ankhen and you rightly said, he had tears in his eyes when Madanji saw him off to his car. He left without saying a word….He did not live to see the premiere of the film, and Madanji really regretted that.
Apart from Sharabi, Dev Anand also starred in Pocket Maar which had music by Madanji.
Namaste N. Venkataramanji,
(48) B. D. Mishra’s full name is Bhagwati Dutt Mishra (I too learnt recently)
N.Venkataramanji (49) Sikandar ne Porus is from the film Anpadh as mentioned by you and the lyrics are by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and not Rajinder Krishan
Namaste K.S. Bhatiaji (72). Laxmikant Pyarelal were never assistants/arrangers to Madanji. They just played in the orchestra. Also, Bindu is the sister of Laxmikantji’s wife.
Thank you AKji for this delightful article. I believe that the films of those days were very similar in the kind of situations that were demanded for the songs, so most of the Music Directors did get the opportunity to score sad songs, romantic songs, philosophical songs, comedy songs, duets, qawallis, loris and so on. Madanji too got this chance, but unfortunately or fortunately his gazals gained popularity that people forgot that he had composed equally good songs in other genres.
I love the songs of all MDs of that era though may be partial to Madanji’s songs and yes, cannot get enough of it.
Thanks once again for this bonus and thanks to Ranganji once again.

Thanks very much for appreciating the post and the versatility of MM. Went through the article you linked. It is superb and unveils lot of facts about MM. I have downloaded the html document and will eventually download all the songs in mp3 format as you tube links are very much chimerical in nature and are likely to disappear in a trice. There cannot be a better ready made source for MM songs when someone had done the hard work of classifying and posting them.
Ms. Sangeetha madam @ 84 and 87
There is a pithy saying in Tamil – Vasisthar vaayaal Brahmarishi. According to legend, Viswamitra was a kshatriya who was checked at the front of Vasishtar Ashram when he invaded by his danda. Amazed at his supernatural power, he vowed to do likewise. He abandoned his throne and after severe thapas and penance became a rishi himself. But he wanted to be called a Brahmarishi by the doyen of rishis Vasishta, which did come about ultimately. Your appreciation of my humble effort to elucidate the genius of your father in my own way is very precious to me. Thanks for correcting me about the episode of Aanken as having happened during preview of the film and not a premiere. Failing memory at my age is the reason for my wrong statement about a solitary instance of Dev Anand and your father’s association as MD. I did see the film Pocketmaar in Delhi long ago. Muliji has also added one more film of Dev Anand for which your father gave music. The film was released two years after your father was gathered to heavens and do not know he personally conducted the orchestra in recording the songs before 1975. You can probably throw light on this.
I wish to add that Madanmohan also scored music for Saheb Bahadur directed by Chetan Anand and starred Dev Anand.
Sangeetaji @ 83,
Thanks a lot for the information on Sundar Singh as well as for providing the link to the clip of the song from ‘Ilzaam’.
Ms Sangita ji, Giri ji ‘,
Thanks for clarifications and further information . Just want to know any of other players that made it big as music directors from orchestra of Madan Mohan ji . I know only of Sonik Omi that made up to becoming music directors .
Continuing with my favourite songs ….here is a pair of songs on Kali …

What wordsmithry! ( A new word coined by me just now!)
CHACHA ZINDABAD, 1959.
Lata, Rajinder Krishen.
I should have added CHACHA ZINDABAD in Om Prakash’s list… Produced ( his banner, Light and Shade) and directed by him.
The madcap Kishore, Anita Guha starrer had so many beautiful songs of different shades.
Bairan neend, mentioned above is a poignant song in the laugh riot film.
Then, the classical
Preetam daras dikhao..
Manna Dey, Lata.
( Kishore makes fun of this in his inimitable style later!)
To my untrained ears it sounds so much like
Tu hai mera Prem Devta..
Same Raga?
Gustaaki Maaf!
The lovely, uplifting
Ae hasino nazneeno..
Kishore Kumar.
What a song! The whistling, the SJ style chorus, KK, the singer, the actor!
Bach gaye hum dono hanste hanste..
Tera mera Chacha Zindabad.
Lata, Kk.
But, my absolute favorite is Kishore Kumar’s
Des chudaye,bes chudaye
Kishore in at least half a dozen different guises ( Sitar playing, singing musician; a clown, a nursery boy including) and, as many, if not more, voices ( including a ‘ ‘feminine’ like Aa ke seedhi lage dil pe of HALF TICKET).
Jack and Jill is parodied as..
Jack and Jill went up the hill
To find the love
Both fell down and then found out
They drowned in love!!
In light vein.
Le gaya zalim ghadi samajh ke
Mera dhadkta dil
Na koi sauda, na koi daam
Na koi parchi, na koi bill..
Rafi.
BOMBAY RACE COURSE, 1965.
Beginning with the clock’s Tik Tik Tik, it is a cute song.
DPR ji,
I will touch upon children’s songs by Madan Mohan.
A special film for comment number 101.
DAK GHAR, 1965.
Produced by the Children’s Film Society, based on Gurudev Tagore’s 1912 play , The Post Office , it starred Master Sachin, Satyen Kappu, AK Hangal, Mukri, Sudha; & Balraj Sahni, Sharmila Tagore in special roles. It is a poignant tale of a terminally ill boy confined to his room by the Vaid’s orders. His longing for fresh air and sunlight, his interactions with various people passing by his window is beautifully brought to life by Zul Vellani. The boy fantasizes about going beyond the hills to meet a King, to receive/ deliver letters.
W B Yeats had translated Tagore’s play into English. It was later translated into Spanish, French, German ( played in concentration camps of World War II ), Polish.
The English version was staged first in 1913, where as the original Bengali version was first staged in Calcutta in 1917.
1. Kyon roz akela jaata hai
Ae Suraj, le chal saath mujhe..
2.Ye bhor jahan se aati hai
Koi mujhko wahan pahuncha deta..
Bhupinder, Kafi Azmi.
Giriji @81,
What a coincidence. You posted the interview of Sangeetaji and Sangeetaji makes her appearance.
Thanks a lot Giriji for posting the interview with Subhas Ghoshal.
@ 85,
Namaste Sangeeta ji.
Your presence and comments add value to the post.
Any number of post cannot satiate the appetite Madan Mohanji’s fans for his songs.
Thank you for the additional information and correction.
Is the name Bhagwati Dutt Mishra or Bhagwat Dutt Mishra?
Pradeepji @ 88,
Giving the links to the songs, mentioned by you, from the three films produce by actor Omprakash.

Pradeepji,
‘Is there any other song where male and female voices are used on a single artiste?’
Not to my knowledge. Even this song is new to me. Hearing it for the first time.
The second song is nice and entertaining. Suitable for the ‘Dream’ post.
The third song is indeed beautiful. And should go well as a intra contra song.
Tum juda hokar hame kuchh aur pyare ho gaye
Paas rehkar gair the, abb toh hamare ho gaye
Pradeepji @ 89,
My pleasure.
Earlier in the ‘Songs and Contra Songs’ post, Hansji quipped
‘without a link you will also remain as PUNYAHEEN ‘
‘Venkataraman ji mostly takes advantage of your Punya’.
So it is a win-win situation for me.
BTW Sangeetaji has answered your query
B D Mishra (?) – Bhagawati Dutt Mishra or Bhagawat Dutt Mishra.
He has mainly penned songs (more than 200) for mythological films starting from 1950.
He worked as song writer till the late 70s. I could also locate a 1980s film for which he was the song writer.
Pradeepji @ 98,

Mr. Rangan,
Ghazal from the album ” Tere Baghair” that was released much after he passed away.
Kaise Kategi Zindagi Tere Bagair . amazing use of violin.
https://youtu.be/tdYq69D0pC0
Madan Mohan was sometimes criticised ( unjustifiably) for over dependence on Lata. I remember Shirish Kanekar, a well known author in Marathi, countering a statement made by his friend in one of his books.
The statement was that take away Lata from Madan mohan’ s compositions & what remains at the bottom is some talat.
Obviously the person making this statement had not heard The following ( only 2 given)
Tumse kahu ek baat – Dastak – Rafi
https://youtu.be/vnWO8IOJZwY
Meri duniya me tum aaye – Heer Ranjha – Rafi
https://youtu.be/R3HrUq2q3eg
Ms. Mumbaikar8 ji @ 118 ;
Tumse kahu ek baat – Dastak – Rafi…song is a beautiful composition and orchestra interlude and prelude is really amazing with perfect violin as a highlighter .
Madan Mohan ji were very fond of Punjabi folk music and such compositions were again heard in Veer Zara movie too . If I back track I find it in famous Lata ji’s song from Mera Saaya…naino wali ne hai mera dil …, that was the year 1966 . Further tracking back , same folk tune was used in the song…aankhoan aankhon mein ho gaye mast ishare….film Khazanchi [1958] .
Now hear these songs to enjoy…

Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty ji;
There is one fast catchy song from old movie Khazanchi [1958] which I am unable to track . The song is sung by Asha….Talam tol kare .. . thought you will help in tracking this oldie which I used to sing in my youth time…of course recalling radio days .
A poignant song which covered the funeral procession of Late Pandit Nehru in the movie Naunihal 1967

Music in emotions, Whisper in heart and resonance in bones .
I have a great respect for David Lean who introduced me the pleasure of watching Sandy Landscapes with excellent music in his beautifully crafted…Laurence of Arabia . Since then views of Mirage has been my favorite landscape after Rainbow.
Watchin Laila Majnu created similar impact on me . Beautiful locales, Excellent crisp photography and out of the world music and songs . Rafi and Lata ji seems to have poured in their emotions in every song that still stands amongst best of Madan Mohan creations .

Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty ji @126 ;
Thanks for bouquet of songs and your beautiful catchy punjabi language soaked in sweet honey . Honey , yes I like the small grid of houses that Bees makes. Together they make a beautiful humming sounds .
It is difficult to say that where Bees are there… Butterflies dare not appear. For their appearance flowers has to be there . Again it is difficult to imagine wheather flower kisses Butterflies or Butterflies kisses Flowers. ….But ….Bhawara bada nadan , Kabhi is baag mein kabhi uus baag mein. Flowers and Butterflies together makes a beautiful scene….a lovely peaceful bliss. A life without them is like a sunless garden . Life of 5 to 10 days for Butterflies to live makes me sad.
Here is a return gift of another Punjabi song from the magic touches of Madan Mohan ji
Chudi khanke chalun mai jab=Film=Ek Shola{1958}
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2ShhFi4xLY
This folk song was used in another song…..Teri rab ne banadi jori .
NV ji,
Na koi fikar, Na hi koi uljhan,
Kyon ke aap se hai ek khoobsurat apnapan;
Door reh kar bhi ho aap dil ke kareeb,
Links dena aap ke badappan hai, Janab!
If I say thank you again, it will sound cliche!
ksbhatia ji,
Haan, mostly bhanwras are like what you said about them!
But, when bhanwra , honestly sings..
Main bhanwra, tu hai phool
Ye mat bhool, jawani laut ke aaye na..MELA
The pool/ kali should not insult saying..
Main kali bhag ki, Tu bhanwra kaala!..PREM NAGAR.
It’s alright to say..
O mere bairagi bhanwra,
Mujhe tadpao na….ISHQ PAR ZOR NAHIN.
You can also dauntingly say…
Kali kali choome, galiyon mein ghoome
Bhanwra beimaan….MANCHALI.
* The bhanwra better not gali gali ghoome during these Covid 19 times!
Be considerate for the bhanwra, too…
After
Dil ka bhanwr kare pukaar …TERE GHAR KE SAMNE
&
Bhanwre ke gunjan hai mera dil…KAL AAJ AUR KAL.
…It makes the flower bloom/ blossom,
Bhanwre ne khilaya phool
Phool ko le gaya Rajkumar! …PREM ROG.
..The only way left is..
Ud jaa bhanwr, Maya kamal ka aaj bandhan tod me…
RANI ROOPMATI /
Ud jaa pyase bhanwre, ras na milega from the KAGAZ KE PHOOL
So, I am surprised to see
Awara bhanwre singing haule haule!
Chorus song.
I doubt if there will be another pure chorus song from the repertoire of MM.

Rahulji@119
I believe, you are referring to Shirish Kanekar’s article on Madan Mohan in his book “Gaaye Chala Jaa”.
It is a well-written article highlighting MM”s expertise as a brilliant composer and his passion for ghazals. At the same time, it talks about his challenges and frustrations due to the film music industry politics. MM never compromised on his principles and maintained his dignity.
Actually, Kanekar himself has made this statement that even if you remove Lata from MM’s music, ghazal king Talat is still there at the bottom. This was in response to the question – What will remain in MM ‘s compositions, if you remove Lata?
Even he did not acknowledge the contributions of Rafi and other singers to MM ‘s compositions. IN the article, he has primarily talked of Lata and Talat songs for MM.

N Venkataraman ji @146;
I desperately was looking for this song….Talam Tol Kare, Ho Rahe Pare Pare,….. as this song had great memories of my cousin singing this fast number and dancing as well. Thanks for locating and posting it . I even looked up browsing full movie on YT but it seems the film versions are short made and many scenes and songs are cut out for no reasons.
During mid and late 50s many Rock and Roll based hindi songs became popular as India was witnessing changing trends in music and fashions . The drain pipe pants saw great change in men’s wear. The pencil shaped men were very happy. If one continue to watch such songs progressively year wise he can feel the trends undoubtedly. The most popular Rock and Roll number that remained to the top position was….Lal lal gaal jaan pe hai lagoo…sung by Rafi in N. Duttas composition in Mr. X . The rest like …OOO meri baby doll…followed . Some of such songs were copies of the one’s sung by Elvis Presley . O P Nayyar and Usha Khanna made a little variations by adopting Drums and Dholak combinations.
There is one more song of Madan Mohan ji , based on Elvis song….. sung by Rafi and filmed on Jagdeep [ unfortunately he is no more but we will rember him thru his immense contribution to film industry .] …..Baap Bete.
BOL BOL MY LITTLE DOLL/RAFI…Baap Beete…

Now this tune is again there in Usha Khanna song from Dil Deke Dekho…..kaun ye aaya mehfil mein . Yet another by SJ in Ek Phool Char kante…..Ooo meri baby doll !!
Bhatiaji @ 150,
I am happy that I could dig out the elusive song, reviving memories of your youth.
Indeed Madan Mohan was versatile genius.
Is it Talam Tol Kare or Tal Matol Kare? Which one is correct?
Your short write-up made a good reading as usual, interesting and informative.
Thanks for posting the song,
Bol bol bol bol my little dove
Dil mera puchhta hai whom do you love
Mujhse jo pyar hai to tell please tell
Baajegi kis din wedding bell
Please tell me sheela
Venkataramanji,
We pronounce it as ‘Taal Matol’, derived from the verb टालना. I hope that is the correct word.
From the list of Madan mohan scored songs as regards the male singers he used for his compositions ,I could find that he used apart from Rafi he used Kishore Kumar for more songs (33) and this was followed by Talat and Mannadey (22 each ) and then Mukesh and Mahendra Kapoor (10 and 11 songs ) . Thought of sharing while we are in this topic. Thanks for a lively discussion!
Akji,
Thank you for the confirmation.
Dr. Shetty & Venkataramanji
I know symbiosis is a basic tenet of nature and numerous instances can be found. For the first time I am seeing how it is operational in the real sense, each of you complementing the other. Dr. Shetty, your efforts in unearthing songs in deluge is a nine days wonder. Venkataramanji”s diligent search in Youtube world and coming out with the links is also a tour de force. Pray for this enduring partnership to shine in future.

What a great find. Never could I imagine this great song of Madan Mohan would be lifted for this Tamil song. G Ramanathan is a music director of repute with many success stories. The actors are the top pair of Gemini Gansesan and his consort in real life Actress Savitri.
Plagiarizing Hindi tunes by music directors from Kollywood down south is an old and well known trait. In early years the tunes were those of Naushad and C Ramchandra in general. Imitation is just imitation and pales before the original. I have listened to all such tamil versions and they are pathetic as compared to their hindi peers. I do hope Venkataramanji would also agree with me. Seen in this light, this is quite a good attempt, but still below par when compared to original. How did you come across this song? Can I post a tamil song which I feel is a copy of C Ramchandra tune and request you to locate the original?

Look for an absolutely ravishing snap of a shy Lata being congratulated by Madan Mohan for capturing the spirit of his music so wonderfully.

Another interesting piece about the Tamil song. It is a duet by Jikki (G. Krishnaveni) and A.M. Raja. These two singers were a husband and wife combination too. In an earlier movie they met in studio to sing a duet. Raja, a Muslim, proposed to her on the set. Jikki was not averse to it. She stated that her family depended on her solely and how she will support them after marriage. Raja told her to go ahead as she pleases and then she agreed to marry. They had a good life together.
Mr. Rangan, @158
Interesting piece. Thanks for sharing. We need more of Jikki and Raja on this planet.

“Can I post a tamil song which I feel is a copy of C Ramchandra tune and request you to locate the original?”
Please do I will try my best to locate it.
Bhatiaji Ranganji,
Ranganji is not very happy with MDs not being original, but it seems MM had no such qualms.
Here is the original version of Mera Naam Abdul Rahman.

What a find. Even lyrics seem to have been lifted. Madan Mohan had to face an angry Sajjad Hussain for copying his tune in his film Aakhri Dao – Tujhe kya sunon
https://youtu.be/PgpnCC1oCIo?t=2
In fact many tunes from thirties seem to have been reused by M.Ds. A post can be written if sufficient instances can be spotted, which is the crux of the issue.
Please indulge in this kind of research for extending the horizons of SOY followers.
Here is the first song from film Raja Rani by the same pair Jikki and Raja. Raja was known as a crooner for his way of singing. The pair is late Sivaji Ganesan and Padmini, one of the best romantic pair to act in Tamil movies.

Another from the film Anbu, actor same pair and singers too the same.

The orchestration is absolutely foreign to Tamil movies. Song is in a fast tempo.
If you can locate the originals, I would feel satisfied. Do not put too much endeavour. Just keep these two songs in your laptop and it is possible you may come across originals one day. No hurry at all. Just a request from me
Ranganji,
Thanks for mentioning A. M. Raja. I am a great fan of A. M. Raja, who had a mesmerising voice. He was the first singer in South India who sang in all South Indian languages apart from Sinhalese. He and Jikki went to Bombay and recorded all the songs for’Avan’, the dubbed version of ‘Aah’ which were hugely popular. It is said that Raj Kapoor and Nargis attended their marriage.
He was a great MD as well.
Incidentally he was not a Muslim. His father’s name was Manmatharaja and mother’s name was Lakshmamma.

Very sorry for my statement that Raja was a muslim. This was based probably on hearsay information long back when I was in school. I took it as gospel truth and had no means of clarifying in those years. I read about his proposing to Krishnaveni and also his tragic end. He is interred at Velur and have seen a photo of it. He was a prudent man and did not squander his wealth in picture taking and getting hit like T.R. Mahalingam who was reduced to penury after his own films flopped at box office. I also love his songs and have a huge collection of same in mp3.
Thank you for this lovely essay. I loved your selection of MM songs in various moods. MM songs are something else. I could be wrong, but isn’t “Jhumka gira re Bareilly ke bazaar mein” written by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan? Your post says Rajinder Krishan. Could you please check. _()_
Monica,
Thanks a lot. You are right about Jhumka gira re. Since corrected. Thanks a lot for pointing out the error. While doing this I noticed that this as well as two other links had been removed by the YouTube. I have replaced them by working links.
