MADHUBALA: The Bewitching Beauty of Bollywood

14 February 2019

Guest article by DP Rangan as a tribute to Madhubala on her 86th birth anniversary (14 February 1933- 23 February 1969)

(The regular readers of Songs of Yore are aware of the tremendous enthusiasm of DP Rangan for writing on various themes and artistes associated with old film songs. After covering themes like Horses, Tonga, Moon, Stars, Bacchus, Deepavali, Steam Engine, Flowers, Cycle, Waterfall, Tasveer and Nuptials, Mr Rangan wrote life sketch of film stars and music directors. He has already written excellent articles on Sajjad Hussain, Suraiya and Meena Kumari. Carrying on the good work, Mr Rangan pays a tribute to the incredible beauty, Madhubala, commonly known as the Venus of Indian Cinema. It is a befitting coincidence that she was born on the Valentine’s Day.

Mr Rangan is a retired civil servant. At seventy-plus, his zeal can be the envy of many persons much younger to him. SoY is lucky to have him among the family. I join him in paying my tribute to the ethereal beauty, Madhubala, and also wishing the readers a very Happy Valentine’s day. Thank you Mr Rangan for your contribution to this blog. – AK)

MadhubalaImagine an audience bedazzled by the beauty of the heroine of the film they are intensely focused on, and coming out at the conclusion completely dazed and still reliving in the dream world of the preceding few hours, and the harsh wakeup to the reality of day to day struggle for carrying on their mundane life. Such was the hold of Madhubala on the public during the heydays of 1950s and 1960s. She was not an actress who could excel in serious roles as her contemporary Meena Kumari and yet such was her mesmerisation of one and all, even when her acting was below par now and then, it was glossed over. Yet her life was not a bed of roses, but one of thorn. She was a glorious star in the film world during her halcyon years, In astronomical language, she could be equated to super massive blue stars that gallop through their life rapidly and sink into a red dwarf or a black hole. She was amply endowed with je ne sais quoi. While Meena Kumari committed seppuku by excessive indulgence in drinks, our contemporaneous heroine was born with a major debility which was to prove a torment in the last few years of her life that did not complete forty years of existence. It is my humble attempt to recapitulate her life with my limited ability and I request patrons of the blog to keep this in mind while going through this post. This is my fourth biography and I am certain the three previous ones of Meena Kumari, Suraiya and Sajjad Hussain are already archaeologist’s delight.

Our heroine came into this world on 14th February 1933, (fifth child out of a total of eleven that were born to her parents) at Delhi. This date is celebrated as Valentine’s Day, as a symbol of romantic love. She was named Mumtaz Jehan Dehlavi at birth. Her father, Attaullah Khan was a conservative Yousafzai Pasthun from the old Peshawar valley, Khyber Pakhthunkwa. Having lost his job he shifted to Delhi. The family were in dire straits and dogged by poverty all along. During those years, she lost four sisters and two brothers leaving behind just five sisters. An astrologer (najoomi) by name Kashmirwale Baba, prophesied that Mumtaj will have a great future and live amidst riches and splendor, but qualified it with another dire prediction that she will lead a miserable life with unfulfilled love life and will meet an early death. Subsequent events bore out the accuracy of this clairvoyant foretelling. In search of a better pasture they relocated to Bombay taking residence in a slum close to Bombay Talkies, an act of deracination forced on the family. Even as a child she was of a different élan with promises of evolving into a great beauty in later years. For sheer survival, her father with his handsome daughter in tow, toted around to find an acting role for her. She had a lift up as a child actress Baby Manju in the film Basant in 1942, when she was just nine. She trudged along for the next few years till 1946, playing in minor roles for 5 more films. By then she had established her skills as a budding actress. Devika Rani, part owner of the Bombay Talkies suggested that she adopt Madhubala (Honey Belle) as her screen name. Kidar Sharma cast her opposite Raj Kapoor in Neel Kamal (1947). As a fourteen year old heroine her stage performance was appreciated. With this breakthrough she rose gradually. Eleven films later, her splendid acting as a pseudo ghost to ensnare Ashok Kumar in her coils in the film Mahal (1949) catapulted her to the top rung. Thereafter, there was no looking back and she was the darling of picture viewers for the next decade.

She acted in 71 films from Basant (1942) to Jwala (1971). I am giving a breakup of the films and the leading heroes during this period.

Years

Films
1942 – 46 6
1947 – 50 23
1951 – 55 17
1956 – 60 19
1961 – 64 5
1971 1
Total 71

In a matter of fourteen years from 1947 to 1960 she appeared in 59 out of a total of 71 films and from 1961 onwards it was a mere trickle. The last film was released two years after she was no more.

She acted opposite many actors during her reign which included almost all the established ones of that era.

Actors No. of films
Dev Anand 8
Pradeep Kumar 6
Raj Kapoor 5
Kishore Kumar 5
Ashok Kumar 4
Dilip Kumar 4
Total 32

She also had occasions to act with Bharat Bhushan (3), Shammi Kapoor (3), Prem Nath (2) and Sunil Dutt (2). Twentytwo actors appeared against her in the balance 29 films. She acted with her mentor Kidar Sharma, who gave her a break in 1947, in the film Neki aur Badi (1949), a maiden venture for Roshan as a music director with near catastrophic consequences for him. It is my unenviable task as a recounter of her acting career to present these dry statistics. I will now upload a few songs from her films. Presenting live videos of songs in which she can be viewed is an ideal goal and I will try to adhere to it to the extent possible.

1. Tumko Mubarak ho by Madhubala from Basant (1942), lyrics Pyarelal Santoshi, music Pannalal Ghosh

Her maiden venture as a child actress with the moniker Baby Mumtaz set her on a film career from this movie. The song is picturised on a Children Radio Broadcast and her performance in a child voice is indeed good to hear. It is averred music was composed by Anil Biswas but was credited to Pannalal Ghosh due to contractual obligations.

2. Paathar se tum dhoodh bahao by Mukesh & Zohrabai Ambalewali from Neel Kamal (1947), lyrics Kidar Sharma, music B. Vasudev

Madhubala’s maiden entry as a full-fledged heroine opposite Raj Kapoor. The theme appears to be Krishna’s leelas in Brindaban, Mathura. Out of eleven songs, I am presenting this. This sweet teenager’s dancing in the video is gracious to say the least.

3. Aaha mere Mohan ne mujkho bulaya by Geeta Dutt from Dil Ki Rani (1947), lyrics Harikrishna Premi, music S. D. Burman

Madhubala singing in joyous abandon in the sultry voice of Geeta Dutt and she seems to have shed her teenager look.

1949 (8) & 1950 (6)

Major hits during this period were films such as Sipahiya, Mahal, Dulari, and Nirala. Here are a few songs.

4. Mushkil hai bahut mushkil by Lata Mangeshkar from Mahal (1949), lyrics Nakshab Jarachvi, music Khemchand Prakash

An iconic film uplifting Madhubala as a prominent actress from then on. Unparalleled music by Khemchand Prakash and the evergreen Aayega aanewala have a permanent niche in all lovers of old period music. I chose this song depicting Madhubala questioning herself how she will face life without her lover.

5. Do din ki bahaar pyare by Lata Mangeshkar from Dulari (1949), lyrics Shakeel Badayuni, music Naushad

Suresh, Madhubala, Jayant and Geeta Bali are the major participants in this film dealing with the travails of a rich man’s daughter kidnapped as a child by a gypsy band and reared as such, and her eventual rescue and reunion with her true parent. This has me beaten for classification. It is not our blogmaster’s triangle, but a quadrilateral – Madhubala in love with Suresh, Jayant with Madhubala and Geeta Bali with Jayant. AK may still argue it is a triangle, if each love pursuit is viewed as one side. Leaving aside the disputation,  let us enjoy the public show of dance by Madhubala along with her co-gypsies. Hero, equestrian Suresh, is devouring her with his eyes from the vantage of horse back.

6. Aankhiyan mila ke zara baat karoji by Mohammad Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar from Pardes (1950), lyrics Shakeel Badayuni, music Ghulam Mohammad

A Rehman, Madhubala, Karan Dewan starrer, the film has 11 songs. This is a well-known duet.

7. Aayi bhor suhani aayi by Lata Mangeshkar from Beqasoor (1950), lyrics Arzoo Lakhanavi, music Anil Biswas

Ajit, Pramila and Yakub are co actors. Seventeen year old Madhubala in full bloom is crooning happily.

1951 (7) and 1952 (2)

Very difficult to choose films that could be dubbed as hits. It would be heavily influenced by individual preferences. All the great music directors have been associated with these 9 films and it is a musical extravaganza. As a writer I consider the films Tarana, Badal and Sangdil.

Madhabula’s debut acting with Dilip Kumar started with Tarana (1951). It was instant chemistry of love between them and set in motion forthwith an affaires de coeur . It would drag on for several years only to sink in a quagmire. Like Suraiya and Meena Kumari she had to face hurdles posed by her over possessive father Attaulah Khan, who guarded the source of sustenance for sheer survival and did not approve of the affair. I will take up further link later on. Now for a few songs from this period.

8. Nain mile nain hue baware by Talat Mahmood and Lata Mangeshkar from Tarana (1951), lyrics Prem Dhawan, music Anil Biswas

Another AK love triangle G-B-G, tussle between Madhubala and Shyama for Dilip Kumar. Story is a typical one of its time. After many twists and turns, true love triumphs. Anil Biswas has enlivened the entire picture with his delectable music suited to the scenes. This song is a ditty of love enacted by Madhubala and Dilip Kumar. Another duet, Seene mein sulagate hain armaan, full of anguish for the separated lovers is also a great piece. I did not pick it on the presumption it would have figured in AK’s earlier post – Distant Duet Songs or some such.

(Note: Mr Rangan has made some references to ‘AK; Love triangle’. Please see My serious review of the film ‘Sangam’AK)

9. Parwane ho parwane by Lata Mangeshkar from Nazneen (1951), lyrics Shakeel Badayuni, music Ghulam Mohammad

Nazir Khan, Jayant and danseuse Cuckoo are in the film. No live video is available. Yet assuming it would be sung by Madhubala, I am uploading this wonderful song. Another song – O zindagi ke malik tera hi asra haiis equally alluring.

10. Unse pyar ho gaya by Lata Mangeshkar from Badal (1951), lyrics Shailendra, music Shankar-Jaikishan

Premnath acts as the defiant champion of downtrodden in the kingdom and his swashbuckling performance and carrying on a love affair in the same breath is the cornerstone of the picture. The movie is full of his derring-do and Shankar-Jaikishan have showered the film with their buoyant music. Here the princess has fallen in love with the champion of oppressed and exhibits her delight with full passion.

11. Dil me sama gaye sajan by Lata Mangeshkar and Talat Mahmood from Sangdil (1951), lyrics Rajinder Krishan, music Sajjad Hussain

An adaptation from Charlotte Bronte classic Jane Ayre, Dilip Kumar and Madhubala in their second film get-together have put in stellar performances. Sajjad Hussain, the perfectionist has given one of his best music direction for the film and this duet and the love scene are a treat.

Madhubala’s fame crossed national frontiers and knocked at Hollywood. In August 1952 issue of ‘Theatre Arts’ magazine, a full featured article entitled ‘The Biggest Star in the World (And She’s Not In Beverly Hills) with a full page photo was published. American film maker Frank Capra while on a visit to Bombay sought a meeting with her to propose an assignment in Hollywood. An alarmed father put his foot down against it and our heroine tamely acquiesced and lost a chance to act in Hollywood.

1953 to 1956

Just 11 films during this lean period for her. Economic compulsions to support her big family forced her to accept assignments which did not add anything to her reputation. Most of them were run of the mill movies.

In 1954 she had a great setback to her health. She was in Madras to act in the film Bahut Din Huye under the banner of Gemini Studios. She vomited blood while on the set. “Dilip saab flew in with Dr Rustom Jal Vakil from Mumbai. He diagnosed she had a hole in the heart (ventricular septal defect). Aapa appeared so healthy and beautiful. She found it hard to believe and so did others. She didn’t take it seriously. She kept on working and signed more films,” recalls Madhur. (Revelations of Madhu Bhushan younger sister of Madhubala). After recovery she completed the assignment and continued working diligently in another 30 films till 1964 ignoring her delicate health condition.

12. Tere sadke balam by Lata Mangeshkar from Amar (1954), lyrics Shakeel Badayuni, music Naushad

Dilip Kumar, Madhubala and Nimmi combo film. Hero gets involved with poor girl Nimmi while courting Madhubala and the resulting imbroglio leads to a twist in the end. This song by Madhubala depicts her in a romantic mood and it is a trade mark Naushad song.

Her only film with Guru Dutt as hero, Mr. & Mrs. 55, was a satire par excellence. She excelled in her role as a carefree heiress Anita with aversion for fortune hunters. Johnny Walker, a find of Guru Dutt does his role of a comedian with aplomb. O. P. Nayyar was his usual self and many great songs were the result. Majrooh Sultanpuri and Saroj Mohini Nayyar were the two lyricists.

1957 (3)

The year proved to be a watershed for the love affair of Dilip Kumar and Madhubala, which has been progressing since 1951 even under the vigilant eyes of her father. She always kept herself from the public glare and never aspired for any publicity. Rumours of her love affair with Dilip Kumar were bruited about. Dilip Kumar escorted her during the premiere of Gemini’s Insaaniyat (1955) in which she had no role and thus the affair got confirmed before the adoring cine viewers.

It might have proceeded perhaps to permanent bondage but fate intervened and ensured our heroine was not to enjoy marital bliss. It hit a roadblock soon. B.R. Chopra signed Dilip Kumar and Madhubala for his venture Naya Daur and paid her advance. She had to proceed to Bhopal for outdoor shooting for a prolonged period. Her ever suspicious father threw a wrench and insisted that the sequence be shot in a studio in Bombay itself. The producer did not agree and insisted on honouring the commitment. Madhubala again caved in to her father’s whims in abandoning her role. A determined B. R. Chopra, substituted her by Vyjayantimala and released the film. An infuriated Ataullah Khan filed a case against Chopra and the later started one against our heroine’s father. The court battle became a public gossip and Dilip Kumar-Madhubala love affair was bandied about in embarrassing detail and was a source of discomfiture. Dilip Kumar already upset with the attitude of her father all along gave testimony in court against him. Ataullah Khan lost his case. This was the last straw and their relationship came to an end.

Gateway of India and Ek Saal released in 1957 were great musical hits. It is very difficult to present a representative song from among them. It would appear partial. Out of sheer necessity I make my choice.

13. Do ghadi wo jo paas aa baite by Mohammad Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar from Gateway of India (1957), lyrics Rajendra Krishna, music Madan Mohan

Pradeep Kumar, Bharat Bhushan and Johnny Walker along with Madhubala were the main actors. Many of the eight songs are truly great compositions by Madan Mohan and one will never tire of listening to them. Bharat Bhushan and Madhubala are singing this duet with abandon while there are killers on the street hunting for them. Sapne me sajan se do baatein, another serene solo by Lata Mangeshkar was cut from the film.

14. Chale bhi aao tumhein kasam by Lata Mangeshkar from Ek Saal (1957), lyrics Prem Dhawan, music Ravi

A social drama with Ashok Kumar in the role of a villain paying court to the daughter of a rich retired Colonel with the intention of running away with their jewels and money along with the Lucknow courtesan Kuldeep Kaur. Johnny Walker and Minoo Mumtaz are a good diversion. Everything ends well with a repentant Ashok Kumar choosing Madhubala in the end. In this song Madhubala is eagerly expecting her lover to pay court to her. Ravi has given one of his best performances. I chose this over the well-known song, Sab kuchh luta ke hosh mein aaye to kya kiya by Talat Mahmood and Lata Mangeshkar as solos.

1958 (6) and 1959 (3)

Three films, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, Phagun and Howrah Bridge were great hits. In Kal Hamara Hai (1959), Madhubala plays dual role – cigarette smoking dancer Bela and a chaste Madhu and showcases her ability to excel in both.

15. Main sitaroon ka tarana by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar from Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958), lyrics Majrooh Sultanpuri, music S. D. Burman

This is a comedy through and through. The only instance of three Kumar brothers Ashok, Anoop and Kishore acting together. Ashok Kumar, a misogynist, brings up his younger siblings without a whiff of female presence while running a motor repair shop. Madhubala acts as a whimsical, mischievous and carefree girl drawing circles over the hapless Kishore Kumar. In this dream sequence Kishore Kumar is pleading with her to pay ‘Paanch rupiah barah anna marega bhaiya na na na’ for repairing her car when it was brought in during a rainy night. She is toying with him like an imp.

16. Dekh ke teri nazar by Asha Bhonsle from Howrah Bridge (1958), lyrics Qamar Jalalabadi, music O.P. Nayyar

True to expectations Madhubala renders a stellar performance as an Anglo-Indian cabaret dancer in a Chinatown underground den, Calcutta. The film is tailor made for O.P. Nayyar music and he as usual never fails to exceed expectations. Mohammad Rafi just renders a line. A real teaser and the way she confronts Ashok Kumar and make him run away in confusion is great to watch.

17. Aa aa meri taal pe naach le babu by Geeta Dutt from Kal Hamara Hai (1959), lyrics Majrooh Sultanpiri, music Chitragupt

Bharat Bhushan and Leela Chitnis are the co actors. Look at the way Madhubala performs as a club dancer Bela. Selection of Geeta Dutt, known for her expert rendition in such songs with her husky voice adds to the charm of the song.

18. Ye sach hai he duniawalon by Mohammad Rafi from Kal Hamara Hai (1959), lyrics Majrooh Sultanpuri, music Chitragupt

Mahommad Rafi alone can light such a situation in a magnificent manner and convey the right atmosphere with the way he renders the song. The chaste girl Madhu appears towards close of the video.

1960 to 1964 (10)

Her heydays were behind her. Still a brief sparkle was left and her bad health now worsened by her neglect and forced her to reduce her assignments even though she was still at the height of popularity. The main films of note were Mughal-e-Azam and Barsaat Ki Raat. Her last performance as a mischievous fun loving character was in Half Ticket along with Kishore Kumar.

Mughal-e-Azam (1960)

K Asif’s magnum opus was ten years in the making from 1950. The film progressed as the peaks and troughs in the love affair between her and Dilip Kumar. Released on 5th August, 1960 it was a resounding box office success and was the biggest earner for next 15 years till overshadowed by Sholay in 1975.

Despite her poor health and frequent faintings, Madhubala acted in the role of Anarkali to perfection. She had already broken up with Dilip Kumar and they ceased to talk to each other. Still each had to perform a part assigned. This was an added mental strain. Naushad’s music is par excellence as also lyrics by Shakeel Badauni. The highpoint of the film – Madhubala openly defying Emperor Akbar and exposing her love affair with Saleem in a court dance is worth watching again and again. Contrast this with a similar scene from Anarkali where an inebriated Bina Rai in a drunken stupor exposes her love for his son Salim and C. Ramchandra composes a song to suit the scene. Madhubala is supremely arrogant in this dance of defiance. Her malapert attitude is something admirable. I have chosen this song depicting Madhubala in chains. What is galling is the fact – the producer Asif insisting on shackling Madhubala in heavy chains to bring realism to the scene. Madhubala already in a frazzle because of her ill health still subjected herself to this torture. She was nominated for Filmfare award but Bina Rai pipped her to the post for her acting in Ghunghat.

19. Bequs pe karam kijiye Sarkar-e-Madina by Lata Mangeshkar frpm Mughal-e-Azam (1960), lyrics Shakeel Badayuni, music Naushad

20. Zindagi bhar nahi bhoolegi by Lata Mangeshkar from Barsaat Ki Raat (1960), lyrics Sahir Ludyanvi, music Roshan

The story revolves around a struggling Urdu poet Aman (Bharat Bhushan) and Shabnam (Madhubala) who fall in love when they encounter each other in a stormy rainy night and how it ultimately succeeds through hurdles posed by the girl’s father. Roshan, the Emperor of Qawwalis has set to tune the songs as a genius and the pinnacle is the great qawwali song – Na to kaarwan ki talash hai. Madhubala is recollecting the first meeting with her lover with this song which she heard as a radio broadcast.

She had acted with Kishore Kumar in two films prior to 1960: Dhake Ki Malmal (1956) and Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958). After the failed love affair with Dilip Kumar post 1957, as a rebound she got married to Kishore Kumar in 1960 overruling her parent. Her health worsened and Kishore Kumar took her to London. Heart surgery was at infancy and doctors there refused to operate saying she will not survive. They warned that she will not live for more than one year. She returned home dejected. Kishore Kumar left her with her parents considering her conditions. She acted in six more films. Her last film Jwala, her only full colour movie, was released two years after her demise in 1971. I am posting one more song from the film Half Ticket, a hilarious comedy with Kishore Kumar. Her strength of mind to involve herself in the film despite her poor health is truly commendable.

21. Chand raat tum ho saath by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar from Half Ticket (1962), lyrics Shailendra, music Salil Chowdhury

A pas de deux. Kishore Kumar is up to his usual tantrums and yodelling. Nothing outstanding about the music except for Madhubala’s lively performance despite under threat of death.

Deteriorating health confined her to bed and she spent her time in her parent’s house surrounded by her family members. She kept a diary from her early days. A great actress with an ethereal beauty was reduced to skin and bones. She passed away on 23rd February 1969, nine days after her date of birth and just crossing 36 years. She lived for nine more years after doctors gave her just a year in 1960. She was buried at Santa Cruz campo santo with her diary at the insistence of her father. Her tomb was carved in marble and writings from Koran were also inscribed. It is a matter of regret that it was demolished in 2010 to make way for more space for further burial.

Madhubala is forever enshrined in the memory of her admirers as a fairy in all her loveliness. Si ipsi consentire vettent. God in his wisdom had perhaps decreed she should not live long so that she is remembered for eternity in the full glory of her loveliness by her admirers. As usual tributes flowed in profusion.

Hindustan Times published an article on her 85th birth anniversary on 14 February 2018. Please read it in full by clicking the link posted below.

New York Times published an obituary on her on the International Woman’s day – 8th March. Of the 15 women they portrayed, the only Indian to figure is Madhubala. I am posting the link below’

http://www.indiawest.com/news/global_indian/new-york-times-publishes-obituary-of-iconic-indian-actress-madhubala/article_c412ef60-23e9-11e8-aabb-9bc22507ebb4.html

New Delhi centre of Madame Tussaud’s unveiled a statute of Madhubala on the 10th August 2017, taking inspiration from her role of danseuse Anarkali in Mughal-e-Azam. The function was attended by her younger sister Madhur Bhushan. Originally scheduled for London centre of Tussad’s, it was shifted to her place of birth.

Here is another excerpt from Hindustan Times.

So striking was her beauty that the famous film journalist BK Karanjia had declared that ‘none of her published photographs did full justice to her quite extraordinary beauty’. Her co-stars would often talk of her admiringly. Dev Anand was once quoted as saying “statuesque is the word I would use for her”. Baburao Patel, editor and publisher of FilmIndia, both feared and respected by the film industry, had dubbed her the ‘Venus of the Indian Screen’. (Hindustan Times, February 14, 2018)

Her memory is still kept alive after 1969. She is featured in many articles and three biographies. India Post issued a commemorative stamp in 2008. If one were to associate an actor/actress with great/delectable songs, I will rank Madhubala in the first place. I know I have not done full justice to her in this post. I expect the blog followers to cover my deficiencies.

Which songs would one add out of so many excellent ones?
The songs of INSAAN JAAG UTHA capture her in different moods:
Jaanu jaanu re( playful… I like Geeta Dutt more on Madhubala. Next in the list of preference: Asha Bhonsle followed by Lata. May be because I prefer a playful MB over a serious/ dramatic/ melodramatic one!)
Mehenatkhashth insaan jaag utha ( purposeful)
Chand sa mukhda kyon sharmaya ( naughty)
Baat badthi gayi khel Khel mein( romantic)

But,I would present something different.
Raj Kapoor’s popularity in Russia, Rajnikanth’s in Japan are well known. Lesser known is the fact that Hindi movies were hugely popular in Greece in the late 50s and the 60s. Nargis, after MOTHER INDIA, was the most popular followed by Madhubala.
Stelios Kazantidis( 1931_2001),one of the most celebrated Greek singers, had dedicated a song to MB in 1959. A bestseller, the album was the first to sell 100,000 copies while the population of the nation was just 6.5 million.
Madhubala Madhubala….
Type Madhubala Greek song and you will access it on YouTube. Or….
Stelios Kazantidis Madhubala.

The translation goes like this..
Madhubala,My sweet love
I am happy for you to come again to me.

Since I left you I am melting
I cry out your name with pain
Madhubala Madhubala…

I wander in the streets with teary eyes
I am sad for a lost love
I am sad for a lost love..

I wish I could see you and then die,My dear
My soul wants only this
Since I lost you I am melting
I cry out your name with pain
Madhubala Madhubala

Kudos Mr Rangan. I must compliment you on choosing such a difficult topic, and yet fulfill the object of the article. Such an exercise involving considerable research surely has to be ‘a labour of love’. With Madhubala, a selection of her best songs becomes all the more problematic because one simply cannot ‘think’ of a Madhubala song without also mentally conceiving her screen presence during the picturisation of that song. Such was her bewitching beauty and charm. There are two screen versions of “Yeh hawa yeh raat yeh chaandni” (one featuring Madhubala and the other, Shammi). Both were equally well picturised. Yet, I always only ‘see’ the ravishing Madhubala in my mind whenever I listen to this song. That was just an example. You have indeed picked the jewels from her collection, though there are ever so many that one may want to add to this list. I am particularly pleased to note that while you have made a due mention of the popular “Aayega Aanewala”, the song that you have picked for inclusion here is “Mushkil hai bahut mushkil”. I have always considered this song the better of the two and have given up discussing and justifying my preference with friends and other music lovers. A wonderful experience to have listened to this selection. Looking forward to more such contributions from you. Thanks.

Madhubala was a beauty no doubt, but in her day there were others too, equally charming. Madhu’s beauty is somewhat overstated, though her vivacious roles highlighted her beauty. Her tragic life lends it a strange poignancy.
This selection of songs is quite nice. But,I miss two songs in this list:
1. Man mein kisi ki preet basa le from Aaram (Anil Biswas) Madhubala looks so wonderful in this scene.
2.Achchaaji main haari from Kala Pani ( S.D.Burman)
Madhubala is so charming and mischievous here.

I read an article in a Delhi magazine over 20 years ago in which it was stated that Madhubala recited the following lines in a conversation/interview towards the close of her life that sums up the tragedy of her situation:
Jab kashti saabit -O- saalim thi
Sahil ki tamanna kisko thi
Ab aish shikashtaa kashti par
Saahil ki tamanna kaun karen, kaun karen.
(lyrics by Prof. Jazbi )

Good Afternoon Rangan ji

A very appropriate article on this Happy Valentines day..
It is a Herculean task to write an article on this ethereal beauty and talented artist including the choice of the songs pictured on her.

But one song which I always hear frequently is

Thank you Mr Rangan for this excellent nostalgic piece. Apart from the songs, which are uniformly good, it is interesting to see the evolution of Madhubala’s looks. In fact I was disappointed to see Mahal after more than half a century of hearing and reading about it. She didn’t look at all like the bewitching beauty with sparkling eyes and naughty smile that we all love. One gets brief glimpses of what she was to become later in the Dulari song. From 1050 onwards she had blossomed fully.

Like all your articles, this one too is one to cherish and preserve.

Ranganji,

Let me join you in paying my tributes to the most desired woman in Hindi films on the occasion of Valentine’s Day. The earliest description of 14th February as an annual celebration of love appears in the Charter of the Court of Love. The charter, supposedly issued by Charles VI of France in 1400, describes lavish festivities including a sumptuous feast, amorous song and poetry competitions, jousting and dancing.

Yesterday night, actually it was past midnight, I asked Bhatiaji, an ardent admirer of Madhubala, to post a few Bahana songs of Madhubala. I did not have an inkling that you are going to come out with a great post on Madhubala. I asked for a high tea and you have provided a full course dinner. You have initiated Soy’s celebration and the next 10 days we will have Madhubala for our company till she bids us farewell on 23rd February to join the other celestial beauties.

After a busy day I have just settled down. So it will take some time to savour all the dishes that you have served on a platter. I am sure I will enjoy this wonderful post.

Rangan ji , N Venkatraman ji ;

The article uplifts the spirit of Valentine Day ….the symbolic celebration that starts with red roses ….but Rangan’ ji made it with a beautiful bouquet of roses . I know everyone would be happy watching Madhubala every day with Venkatraman ji inputs of best of her songs ….some rare and some popular .

What is amazing is that every cameraman ,with least efforts ,brought best of results as Madhubala looked beautiful from every angle …..and most of the time camera covering the face only . Even in still photography the Time Life fotos of Madhubala were shot without any makeup and the results were amazing. I remember Nalini Jaywant was also covered by Time Life Magazine.

A song where camera brought best of smiles of Madhubala with perfect lighting required for B&W photography…

sahi baat hai : “none of her published photographs did full justice to quite extraordinary beauty.” “jo baat tujh men hai teri tasveer men nahi.” Photos of genuine beauties often dont reflect their actual beauty..one can experience the bedazzlement only by face-to-face encounter ! On the other hand, very ordinary faces reflect more than they actually are in photos by cosmetic help ! world of illusions !

Excellent Article Ranganji, a well timed tribute to the most beautiful actress, the genuine beauty, of Indian Cinema – Madhubala.
Great songs collection from beginning of her career. I had impression that Dilipkumar has more films with Madhubala than RK and Dev…surprisingly Dev leads all !

Jwala had great music of SJ…though film released in 1971 but its music recorded in early sixties, you can sense it. I am posting a duet of it I like very much..
Aaja re aaja more sajan aa

this film has another very melodious female duet which is my big favorite.

14 R Vasudevan February 15, 2019 at 7:44 pm

A very fine write up from the flowing pen of Rangan. Thank you sir.

Incidentally I just finished reading Madhubala her life and films written
beautifully by Khatija Akbar.

Undoubtedly Madhubala was one of the most beautiful if not stunning actress of Indian cinema. Comparison in beauty never gives a conclusion nor in comparing with others one get to know who is the best.

Death snatched away a fine actress so early. With the combination of charm and qualities of a good human being she ruled and still lives in the heart of her fans/followers.

Only part of her charm was physical. The tragedies associated with her also played a role in building the mystic, so much so that the Madhubala name practically became her copyright. Madhubala Jhaveri, the singer, learnt this the hard way. Her tour in South Africa had been fully sold. But when people found that she was not the ‘real thing’, they began demanding refund! Ranganji,
Welcome back to India.
Went through your post. Thanks for the exceptionally scripted account of Madhubala life. Your outstanding prose, almost poetic, made a good reading and an excellent selection of songs which covered the entire span of her career.

Several of her films were shelved or she was replaced. Let me open my account with two songs from one of her shelved films.

First a short clip which is incomplete.

Bhatiaji @ 11,
Thanks for the song Yeh Kya Kar Dala Tune from Howrah Bridge (1958). Although I have listened to the song several times earlier the sheer presence of vivacious looking Madhubala enlivens one’s mood once again and a nice song too. Your starter stirred up long-gone memories and pent-up feelings; the ride in a Hackney coach around Victoria Memorial and a launch ride on the river Hooghly at the sunset, having a feeling of sharing the entire universe between us. Those were the early days when we did not really realize the difference between love and relationship. That was much later. But there was decorous fun.

Coming back to the song the camera captures the Esplanade area of Calcutta in the 50s. In the background of the Hackney coach appears the Paradise Cinema Hall (no longer in existence), and then one can notice the Rosogolla advertisement on top of the K C Das sweet shop opposite the Tipu Sulatan Masjid and the Esplanade. And then appears the Metro Cinema Hall, the grand old heritage building. If you carefully observe, you can see the hoardings of the Bengali film Chandranath (1957), a Uttam Kumar- Suchitara Sen starrer at the Metro Cinema. Metro Cinema Hall was a project of MGM to promote their movies in Calcutta. It was first of the two cinema halls to be designed by the noted New York based (Scottish born) architect Thomas Lamb. Lamb drew up plans for this Metro Cinema in Calcutta in 1934 and it opened in 1935. The Metro in Bombay was opened in 1938. The ownership changed hands in 1972. The current owners, Mumbai based Metro Reality has leased out the property for both retail mall and multiples use. Loads of memories. Let me put a pause here and come back to Madhubala, the celestial beauty.

Dil ke kore kagaj par
ulfat ki lakir bana lu
aa teri tasveer bana lu
mai apni taqdeer bana lu, aa

Bas isi tarah tum hansti raho
sharmati raho, bas hansti raho
Bas isi tarah yu aankho se
tum nayi ada dikhlati raho
Dekh tumhari pyari jhanki
mai bigdi taqdeer bana lu
Aa teri tasveer bana lu
mai apni taqdeer bana lu, aa

Many a Romeos would have said the same to their sweethearts. This song was posted in earlier posts of SoY, I would like to repeat it here again.
Aa Teree Tasvir Bana Lu by Talat Mahmood, film Nadan (1951), lyrics Pyarelal Santoshi, music Chic Choclate

Venkatrman ji @20;

I knew you as a passionate lover of art ,beauty and music would respond to this beautiful very aptly framed song ….and your description of the area adds to the charms of watching song in totality ….i.e. with steroscopic vision and sound . Shakti Samant had a great respect for Calcutta and its bengali traditions . In each of his films shot in Kolkatta it was a tradition to cover the streets and important roads and landmarks of this capital of the state. Though the scenes in the song are shown as back projection it covers most of the highlights as described by your goodself. I was fascinated by some more props that appeared as backdrops like ….signage of Coca Cola, Bata, appearence of Merced. and Landmaster [ 1957 model earlier model known as Hindustan 14 ….the roubust vehicle that was fitted with 14 hp austin of england engine ].

But this song is worth watching again and again . See how Madhubala looked as beautiful in western outfits as well.

I know many followers of such beauty would look out for songs where not only songs are good but Madhubala is at her charming best. One such song…..

Internet is playing drakes and ducks with me. I am unable to do a serious work. I thank all the blog followers for their encouraging words. I will reply to all the comments individually.
9 months absence from flat has left it in a bad condition despite periodic cleaning by man Friday. In 18 years of travel and return I was greeted by five mice who seem to think I am the aggressor. They had a mess of the house with mountain load of their own created garbage. Requested them with folded hands to leave. Told them they need not pay any rent for 8 months and also for the collateral damage. Seeing their adamant attitude had to take harsh measures to evict them.

Dr. Shetty
Thanks for your appreciation of the post. It belongs to blogmaster who suggested this post. The fact her fame had spread to Greece and a song composed in her honour shows her fan base was not confined to India alone.
Rajanji – Thank you for your kind words and appreciation of my song selection from Mahal. I try to pick songs good to hear and not so popular or oft heard.
Mr. Nanjappa – Nice to see your response and thanks for your kind words. You know there is a definite limitation on the number of songs that I can add in a post. Ashwinji’s new year post with 42 songs is an exception and not rule. You are at liberty to add any songs and corresponding you tube link.
Nakkaji – Thanks for appreciation of the post. The song you mentioned seems to be sung in a sad mood. Probably Madhubala found out about the affair between Dilip and Nimmi and expresses her outrage in this way.
Anupji – Very grateful that you found the post so alluring. Add more songs as you like and the more less heard would be doubly welcome to me. Please send your e mail again. I think it got deleted accidentally.

26 D P Rangan February 18, 2019 at 2:26 pm

Subodhji – Consider it a great honour to see the way you have assessed the post and consider it worth preserving and useful. Biographies do need deep research to follow the lifeline especially if there were ups and downs. Madhubala had enough of them.

Jignesh – Was there an upheavel below your house and rocked enough for you to come out of the cocoon and write such a nice note of appreciation. Need more contribution by way of rare songs from her films.
Vasudevanji – Thanks for your appreciation. What you read about Madhubala was an article or book by Khatija Akbar. If an article please post the HTML link for all to go througth.

27 D February 18, 2019 at 2:38 pm

KB – Thanks for your views. The list of actresses you have given would need plenty of labour to fructify. I will make an attempt subject to approval by blogmaster.
Canasyaji – Thanks for posting the link to the article. It is all to the credit of AK that this post was possible. I usually see such write ups while in USA. Thanks for appreciation and the song link.
Mr. Joseph – Your appreciation is a great balm for me. I just mentioned the film Mr. & Mrs. 1955. One has to leave out something or the other as covering 71 films is impossible.
Harpreetji – I know Madhubala is a synonym for unbounded joy. Life is not all sweetness. After some time even happiness would become stale. Singing in times of distress is also to be appreciated from such as her.

28 D P Rangan February 18, 2019 at 2:49 pm

Bhatiaji – You have a unique way of expressing about the article. I like the bit about roses. The second tonga song of Howrah Bridge is a classic all right. That is Madhubala in love. I chose one where she played her role of a chanteuse to perfection. For once I find you in a subdued mood. There are no song showers which is what everyone expects from you. I am sure you are busy collecting her rare songs and spring a surprise on all. You would be much ahead of the competition.

29 N Venkataraman February 18, 2019 at 2:54 pm

Jignesh@12
Ranganji’s post on Madhubala was just about enough to stir up the tranquil ocean. Thank you Jignesh for making the guest appearance. You are yet make the expected big splash.
Thanks for posting the songs from her last film Jwala. But in the female duet song Aaha le gai ho jiya le gai, I seems Madhubala was not there. Did they use Madhubala look alike to complete the film. In the another song Jagi Raat Bhar Teri Yaad Me Balam, Madhubala can be seen at 1:04. But from 2:48 it seems her double had taken over. I am posting this nice Kedar based song .

Your introductory comments are great and the history behind Valentine Day is welcome to all. I know your abilities to come out with facts not known to many. What a knowledge about your city. I suggest you make a big compendium about Calcutta and send it to Lonely Planet. They are sure to appreciate it. I can offer my rudimentary skills of photography to assist you if you undertake it. Your paeans about me in your introduction makes me very embarassed. A praise from you is like manna from heaven. Thanks for interceding and explaining about my lack of prompt response. I am now more or less settled. Considerable improvement in internet and hence I could write so long.

The three songs, one posted by Canasyaji from Jhumroo(1961), the other one by Mr.Joseph from Mr. & Mrs. 55 and the third by Pramodji from Do Ustad (1959) reveal different images/moods of Madhubala. All the three songs made nice listening.

Bhatiaji @22

Thanks for filling up those details which I missed to mention. Thanks too for the song and visual of 17/18 years old Madhubala from the film Badal.

Let me go back to her early day of her film career. Out of the 5 films she appeared as a child artist, information on 5 songs is available. She rendered 2 songs in the film Basant (1942). One of them is presented by Ranganji (#1), In the other song from this film, we can see her parents presenting her as new Kalakar and advising her to perform, akin to the real-life situation then (from 1:57).

mere chhote se man me chhoti si duniya re
chhote chhote gharwa, chhoti atariya
chhoti si bagiya re
chhoti si duniya ki choti chhoti baate
chhote chhote din aur chhoti chhoti raate
chhoti umariya re, chhoti umariya re
mere chhote se man me chhoti si duniya re

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJOUb5svGMg

I believe she rendered two songs for the film Dhanna Bhagat-music Khemchand Prakash (1945). But they are not available for listening. One more song from the film Pujari (1946) is available in YT. I do not know whether she rendered any more song in this film. Here is the audio (incomplete) version of the song from Pujari-music Hansraj Behl.
Bhagwan Mere Gyan ke Deepak Jala de aur Man Ke Andhere Ko Ujjale se Banade

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjOVoqxIQUs

I am not sure whether she rendered any song in the films Phoolwari (1946)-music Hansraj Behl and Rajputani (1946)-music Bulo C Rani.

33 D P Rangan February 18, 2019 at 4:33 pm

@32
Madhubala as a child under the moniker Baby Mumtaz rendered two songs for the film Dhanna Bhagat along with Master Brijlal –
Meri maiya mayi gaiya charau and mithe bhojan
Nothing further is available.
In Phoolwari, singer details are available for 4 songs and she is not one of them. Five more songs with no details except lyrist and MD

D P Rangan’ji @28;

I can make and post showers of songs but Madhubala itself is such a nice subject by itself that prevents me to flood the entire DPR [ Detailed Project Report…!!] . I am at a mode to enjoy each flavour of Songs …., sad, happy, mischievious , delicious ….and so on ….listening to song in totality as to how the song made me and other happy and living in memories for so long ! I think my friend Venkatraman ji is also in the same mode. I am happy for Hans and Arvinder sharma ji who do relate their childhood memories that are tagged to their past…… [ Hans ji….Khali pocket rakhte hain per foto geeta bali ki …] . One can see how music is Bridging all of us. Any good song can fix lazy monday.

Whenever I am in a cascade steping mind of music…….. travelling from Hollywood to Havana to Caribbean to Portuguese to Goa…..my mind switch back to some of very usefull comments we all shared regarding Carmen connection etc. C Ramchandra I think all started earlier and achieving heights with …Shola jo bhadke ….followed by some beautiful songs from less known movies like ….Sarhad. Now who can think of Hemant Kumar of doing the same wonder in a single movie itself.

During mid 50s it was a trend to make crime thrillers and those has to be flooded with some very catchy western and club numbers. Madhubala Pradeep Kumar pair was quite popular for a sort of low budget crime thrillers. They appeared in Police , Detective and some high budget films like Rajhath too. All these films had fantastic music . Most of the film ….Police ….was shot on Beaches, Shacks and Clubs and therefore had to be music of the styles of OPN, SJ etc. Beach wear in those times….well Madhubala appearing in frill top , pant , sandal , gogles and straw hat . For men…. loose flowerish Miami B’shirt matching the Palms !

Coming back to music …..Hemant Kumar excelled in bringing out the best of Caribbean music to the Indian cinema thru this film ….beating his own image and style. There are qutie a few in numbers but these three are best of the lots…

O O O baby…..Hemant, Geeta….Police[ 1958]….HK [ Audio video is of poor quality …..listening to Mp3 version is a pleasure.] . This song is inspired from the havana od western song O O O Bernadine of the 1952 song .

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6ttNUkI1-8&t=43s

Chhup ja hamare dil me……Hemant , Geeta…..ditto……This song is again a straight lift from old classical rumba based caribbean song and dance number .

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMbZsa-A4Hw

Mere Tum Ho Phir Kya Hai……Police ….Again no good quality video is available . This song too was shoplifted by SJ in Kathputli ….probably each one liking the tune and rhythm .

…..more to come…

Ranganji,
Browsing through the 71 films in which Madhubala acted, I found one film by the name “Deshabakthan”(1952) directed by Amiya Chakrabarty. No more information is available on this film.

Besides, several of her films got shelved or she was replaced. Just to mention a few, Gohar, a Dilip Kumar Madhubala starrer was shelved in 1951. August 1951 issue of Filmindia mentions Madhubala presents Dilip Kumar in Gohar(!). Madhubala and Shammi Kapoor were to star in the 1954 film, Dil Farosh. In fact, they even shot for the film. Cineplot has a still from the movie. Suhaana Geet, where she was paired with Kishore Kumar, was also shelved most probably in the late fifties. Another one was Chalaak. Sometime around 1964, Madhubala decided to make a comeback and finish her work on Chalaak, where she was cast opposite Raj Kapoor, while the music for the film was being scored by Shankar-Jaikishan. According to the July 15, 1960 issue of Screen, some ten reels were in the can by then. Some more filming took place before Madhubala’s ailment again brought the film to a halt. Sometime around 1966, Madhubala again made a valiant attempt to complete the film, in vain. It was all the more tragic as it is said that Chalaak had just a few more filming days left. And none of the songs except one rendered by Mukesh are available. Another film I have mentioned earlier was Yeh Basti Yeh Log (1961). I have posted an incomplete song from this film.

After their successful pairing in Badal in (1951), Madhubala was the first choice for movie ‘Shagufa’ (1954) opposite Prem Nath (under his own production). Premnath fell in love with Madhubala and their relationship went on for a period of 6 months after which Madhubala started to distance herself from him. As told to Filmfare by Madhubala’s sister, Madhur, their relationship broke on the grounds of religion. After their break up, Prem Nath fell in love with BIna Roy and she replaced Madhubala in the film too. Everybody knows the circumstance under which she was dropped from the film Naya Daur (1957). Ill-health saw her being replaced by Kalpana Mohan in Shakti Samanta’s Naughty Boy (1962). In the 1963 film Ek Dil Sau Afsane, she was cast opposite Raj Kapoor, but was later replaced by Waheeda Rahman.

By the way, the reverse too happened. Shyama, the successful heroine of Guru Dutt in Aar Paar was to play the role opposite Guru Dutt in Mr. & Mrs 55 (1955). Guru Dutt decided to replace Shyama, but Vyjayantimala turned down the offer made to her by Guru Dutt and eventually Madhubala bagged the role. If I am not mistaken initially the role in Mughal-e-Azam was offered to Suraiya. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Here is another song from Badal (1951), initially it starts on a sad note, as soon as Mukesh voice is heard, the mood changes and a smiling, bubbling Madhubala glides down to join Premnath for a lovely duet.

Yes, Suraiya was offered Anarkali’s role first. The first attempt,in 1946, with Chandramohan and Nargis was shelved after Independence.

Whatever you stated about incomplete pictures must be correct. I admire how you get such data. Must have dug deep. 3 of the mice had a royal ride in the rat trap and I dropped them a kilometer from house in bush. Two were stubborn and with sad heart kept a sticky paper and both got stuck and must have died by now. I never believe in harming even a cockroach and still regret. Abraham Lincoln, kindest man who will not hurt even a fly had to wage a civil war for 4 years to keep the union and paid a price ultimately.
The song from Naata is very similar to the one in Munimji – ghayal hiraniya by Lata for Nalini Jaywant. You tube link

Deshabhaktan does not have Madhubala as an actress.

The extent of knowledge you display is staggering to say the least. It is high time you also write an article for the blog. It would be welcome to one and all. I also like sad songs equally. They are good to hear and goes into your heart. Drown the blog with deluge.

D P rangan ji;

Its a deep sense of pride in me when I hear encouraging words from all of you. Happy or sad ….any song that touches your heart….. carries a sweet pain translated by tears. Just now I was on a sad happy combo of a song….Tere sadke balam….from Amar . All the time I was questioning myself about the well being of Pathak ji . Ak Ji thanks for that beautiful article that is itched deep in my heart.

42 ksbhatia February 18, 2019 at 11:27 pm

N Venkatraman ji @37;

Sir, You have a great passion of running deep into the subject with amazing recall memory ! The Aurat and Badal songs were from the same camps of producers and Shankar Jaikishan did full justice to these semi historical drama . I think ….aye dil na mujh se chhupa….is one of the sweetest mukhda prelude by Lata ji . Whenever I hear this song I just close my eyes to cherish this beautiful voice of Lata ji .

Apart from Badal one more of Madhubala movie was of such kind …..Baghi Sipahi . This movie again had Shankar Jaikishan …..who were enjoying their top status at that time . One very funny worded song appeared in the movie which is worth sharing here.

Chinchan Pappulu_Choo Na Lena–Baghi Sipahi(1958)–Manna Dey, Asha Bhosle, chorus……SJ

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=en2PBE3NxLM

Now another song from same movie whose tune was almost repeated in a much later movie Jwala.

Muskurati zindagi ko – Lata ji…. Baaghi Sipahi (1958) – Shankar Jaikishan

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vv8dg3x_sZs

….to be contd….

D P Rangan ji, N Venkatraman ji ;

At a very young age Madhubala turned producer also and have credit to her two movies …..Naata [1955] ….and….Mehlon ke Khawab [1960] . S. Mohinder was the music director for both the movies . It is not known wheather this preference was due to excellent music of Shirin Farad by S,Mohinder starring Madhubala .

Gar tum bura na mano..Subir Sen_ Asha Bhosle…Mehlon Ke Khawab …[ this song has the flavour of Madan Mohan style of lilting compositions ]….

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6riwQ6xjtQ

Dhadke Dhadke Reh Reh Ke Dil Bawra – Naata 1955….Lata Mangeshkar; Sudha Malhotra ; Rafi ; SD Batish …..this song is a folk based punjabi tappe .

Jaagi raat bhar teri yaad men is amazing song ! Music of Jwala is recorded somewhere betwn 1960-65..this was the period when SJ were able to produce topclass music even in sleep !
You have posted Madhubala’s another great song “Lagan lagi hai sajan milan ki”..one of my Lata favourites.
S.Mohinder has created very good songs with Lataji in Naata (1955).
another favorite song from Naata is
“Is bewafa jahan ka dastoor hai purana
jalta rahe nasheman hansta rahe zamana”
https://youtu.be/B9eL76fTb9Q
these songs are repeats as we have discussed these songs way back in 2013 in 1955 female songs episodes but worth highlighting again and again.

I was aware of Madhubala turning producer when I compiled 71 film in detail to get relevant information as an excel document and sent it to blogmaster for reference. In fact towards the close of her life she was planning to produce a film. Just started and had to give it up. Happy to note you are back to business.

Jignesh
You have created a tsunami of songs in the wake of an unpheavel. I enjoyed them. I knew about Aaram songs though the film was much below average. I just posted a few songs as it struck my fancy. It is up to followers like you to further embellish the post.

Welcome to SOY. I fully endorse your view about the perennial beauty of Madhubala getting better with age. A few are gifted as such. Even she would not have escaped the ravages of age. God had taken her away at such a time that she will be an eternal bubbling beauty for all of us. Have seen the movie Dulari long back and remember it. All songs were great. With a weak storyline it did flourish thanks to Naushadmia’s music direction.

DP Rangan ji,
Thanks for this wonderful writeup on the most beautiful lady of Indian cinema.
Your writing as always is very informative and articulate. There are a lot of new words to be learnt everytime 🙂

The subject of this post is very much like watching a sunset while sitting on a beach where the sky is full of shades of colors not available anywhere, the waves providing the sound which is so enchanting, the Sun following its light to the water and uniting with it. What transpires is the peaceful existence, losing sight of the world, feeling of oneness with nature.

I am not sure whether she was the inspiration behind the beautiful songs or songs became beautiful in her presence.

She was not the best of actresses nor a very good dancer but there is something mesmerizing about Madhubala… je ne sais quoi (to borrow your phrase).
It was great while it lasted. The only solace in her leaving early is that we shall always remember her as young and beautiful.

Here is one delightful song –

Thanks for your appreciation of the post. I hope I have landed on a proper format to proceed with posts relating to biography of cine stars past. English is a peculiar language and provides very many words which may be uncommon in usage, but convey precise meaning. I have forgotten much more of such words due to non usage after retiring from service. Latin phrases are mere a decorative addition. Thanks for adding a good song from Sajjad Hussain, a great and misunderstood music director.

Thanks for the songs from Police (1958). Your detail narratives about the music and visuals – right from the fashion trends to locations- added the right spice for savoring the moments. And very aptly put “One can see how music is bridging all of us. “
@36
The bouquet of sad songs was very much worth listening and exuded different moods of pathos.
Guzra Hua Zamana Aata Nahin Dobara portrays the pangs of separation, where there is no hope of reunion. The caravan of camels passing through the desolate desert enhances the effect.

The winding procession of bullock carts carrying the Banjarans gives a lively visual effect in the song from Phagun. Sun ja pukar is also a song of separated lovers, the lady in her pangs of separation calls out to her lover to respond. But there is an indication of hope. And she is not disappointed. When the melody of the flute played by her beloved reaches her ears, Madhubala’s face radiates like a full moon.

O barso re, haay bairi badarva barso re is a song sung in deep anguish by a helpless Madhubala who accuses the Badarwa as Bairi and pleads to the clouds to douse the flame set upon the house where her beloved is entrapped. And once again she is not left disappointed.

Do Din Ke Liye Mehman Yahan is most probably a song of distress, where she is remorseful for hurting her beloved due to misunderstanding. A short lived state of anguish.

khuda nigehaban ho tumhara is song of ultimate melancholy . Madhubala is down in the dumps, she has reached a point of no return. Madhubala aptly expresses unfathomable welled-up emotion.

Every shade of life is a passing phase and every emotion has its consequence and significance. We learn through our experience that we were not born to hate, we were made to love. But I never knew it was so hard. Then I realized that in this weary heart there is a bird, but one of these days the bird will learn to fly.

Thanks for posting the songs from Baaghi Sipahi. Jignesh posted the song Aaja re aaja more sajan aa earlier in this post. Most probably you posted it in Swing a song of six pence. I think you were referring to this song.
BTW Pappulu in Telugu means pulse. May be Shankar’s Hyderabad influence, he used it as a nonsense lyric.

Thank you for the confirmation.

Diving deep always fetches some unknown and useful information.
The three mice released would have found a new home to bread and breed. The other two must have attained Sadgati.
As far as my limited knowledge goes, the song Ghayal hiraniya from Munimji was based on Raag Kafi, akin to Carnatic Karaharapriya.

Happy to note that you liked the songs Jaagi raat bhar teri yaad men and Lagan lagi hai sajan milan ki. Is Bewafa Jahan Ka Dastoor Hai is another fabulous song. Another heartbreak song of Madhubala. Some of the classical compositions of S Mohinder were outstanding. Yes some of the songs were discussed and posted in earlier posts. But that was way back, almost 6 years. When a blog successfully runs for so many years and there are theme based posts, repetitions are bound to happen. As you have rightly said they worth highlighting/listening again and again. Although I have listened to the songs of Beqasoor and Aaram earlier, I would caome back after listening to the songs again. Stay blessed.

Jignesh ji @45, N Venkatraman ji @52 ;

Jignesh ji thanks for reinforcing the theme with your addition of beautiful songs from Aaram . In fact every movie and its songs are part of happy days you have enjoyed during youth days.

The year was 1951/52 and surprised awaited for us to spend our summer vacations at hill station of Mussoorie . I was just 5 years old and had charms to see movies….not understanding the story line …..but the moving art with songs and music made me sit on the edge of the hard wooden foldable seats of Rivoli and Regal theatres of Mall Road . I remember when we saw Deedar we were treated with trailer of Aaram and three four days later saw aaram with a gift of trailer of Deedar. Not very big of me I used to hum Aaram’s song…..yeh zindgi hai yo yo …..knowing now that it was sung by Manmohan Krishna. The fav.of our family song was ….Aye jaane jigar.

We have visited the hill station many times at later dates and its a nostalagic feeling to take the up and down the road trails visiting shops where we used to buy toys when we were small. The smell of the woods and wood crafts are the one that make me backtrack and rewind my old days. If one is of the taste of spending time in an old world charm then stay at Savoy ……the hotel used by many producers of documentary films made by Indian and British nationals.

Venkatraman ji , you have added beautiful screenplays to the sad songs. No doubt passions takes you where music is .

Madhubala and Premnath were really a hit pair of the early 50s and another movie Saqi had some good sad and romantic songs . A few of them….

Thanks a lot for adding these beautiful songs. A matter of small detail. Beqasoor (1950) had two MDs, Hansraj Behl in addition to Anil Biswas. Song #9 and another Rafi-Lata duet were composed by Hansraj Behl.

Jignesh ji @57.;

Between the lines I can feel your sweet emotions and passions stored in you for music. I believe when childhood memories you hold close to your heart lives in your mind forever . ….so also is its surround system. Some how I have a strange feeling that those who like music of a classic touch have the interests in other arts too ….like…. designing furniture, interior decorations , gardening , travelling to isolated untouched hills and parks ….and so on . Most of us must have observed that all the designs etc. shown in the songs and sets are almost same and trendy as being adopted in class of rich tastes. Watch Mehboob Khan’s Andaz and Amar and have the feel of the rich taste of art. The set designing of Badal is beautifull…..and why not ….it has to match beauty of Madhubala too.

A few additions which adds to the collectors items…..

If Hemant Kumar can come up with beautiful western songs….and why not Shamshad Begam for Madhubala !! I remember Pushpa Hans too gave playback for Madhubala ….But first Shamshad who gave three songs for her in …..Rail ka Dibba . The fourth one was by Asha…..whose tune was quite similar to Pardes song. The common factor is Gulam Mhod …its MD.

Papi Duniya Se Door Chale – Shamshad Begum – RAIL KA DIBBA

Thank you for posting the songs from Aaraam & Taraana, which takes me back to posts on Best songs of 1950 & 1951.
Anil Biswas created some of his greatest melodies in 1951 for the films Aaraam and Taraana. The two songs of Talat , Aye jaane jigar dil men samaane aaja & Shukriya aye pyar tera came for extensive discussion in the post (s) “Best songs of 1951”. The songs of Armaan and Taraana finally clinched the Best MD Award for 1951 in favour of Anil Biswas. Mr. Nanjappa mentined about his liking for this song Man mein kisi ki preet basa le. You have covered another 5 songs. The other two songs of Aaram do not have Madhubala in the visuals. Bhatiaji has made a reference to male solo by Manmohan Krishna. Balma ja ja ja by Lata based on Behag is also a nice song. You may remember the Talat-Lata duet Seene mein sulagate hain armaan was declared the best duet for the year 1951 and the song Ek main hun ek meri bekasi ki shaam hai from Taraana and two Talat solos from Aaraam were instrumental in Talat bagging the best male singer award for 1951.

You may also recall the song Matwaale naino wale ke main wari wari jaaun was extensively discussed and was declared the best female solo song for the year 1950. C Ramchandra (Nirala, Samadhi, Sangram, Sangeetha & Sargam) pipped Anil Biswas (Beqasoor, Lajawaab & Arzoo) for the Best MD award for the year 1950.

I will post a few songs from Tarana. The songs might have appeared in earlier posts of SoY, yet one never gets tired of listening to Anil Biswas’s creations.
Seene mein sulagate hain armaan by Talat Mahmood and Lata Mangeshkar from Tarana, lyrics Prem Dhawan, music Anil Biswas

There is a saying – Exception proves the rule. But she was only 36 when she left this world. Ranganji has expressed similar views (@48). Na who hamse Judah hinge is a nice addition.
Here is a song from Ek Saal. Everybody would have wished her the same as in the song. Her parents too would have wished her alike. Madhubala is looking as beautiful as ever in this song. This is the only film of Madhubala for which Ravi composed music. It was Ravi’s third venture.
There is a possibility that the producer of EK saal might have tried to market Madhubala’s real life story. The story idea was credited to I S Johar. In the beginning of the movie the doctor played by Mahmood tells Usha’s (Madhubala) father that his daughter has only a year to live. She has tumour in her brain. Then the scene shifts to Lucknow where she is celebrating her birthday in her granny’s house.

tu jiye hazaro sal gori o gori jiye hazaro sal
ye subh din aaye bar bar le leke khushiya
………
sukh me biti teri sare jiwan ki ghadiya
…………
tere angana me baaje sahnayi
banke dulahaniya tu sjana ke dwar jaye
pyar bhari kaliyo se doli sajaye
……………..
ghunghta hatake saiya pakde jo gori baiya
jhuk jhuk jaye naina jiya sharmaye
tere angana me baaje sahnayi
khele teri godi me chanda sa lalna
tu jiye hazaro sal gori o gori jiye hazaro sal

Indian Venus Valentined

The opening lines of the post bedazzled me and I was bemused what the retired civil servant officer was trying to tell us?

Granted that the days of fifties and sixties were on poverty line for the newly Independent Nation and there were continuous scarcity of the Roti Kapada Makan, sugar rice and wheat as government’s food-minister S.K. Patil was sent to America with a begging bowl and other never-ending needs for the common people and life was very harsh, unbearable and in south there were riots for the rice so only repose for the three hours in a film theatre engaging in the banal stories and imagining replacing themselves in the places of screen idols’ made up images. Ultimate substitute vicarious pleasures!

But that was the aim of the filmmakers so that they would come again and again and see the films to fill up the cashier’s box and live in the imaginary bewitched world and pay the price instead of spending them on the necessities of life.

That’s where the clash of Nehru and the Indian film makers occurred. That’s where Satyajit Ray had to rise up and make films of the Indian-Italian cruel realities of life. And Nehru had to promote the first Exhibition of the International films in Delhi to come to terms with life in realities of the Indian scenes.

And conversely Mrs Vjayalaxmi Pundit the High Commissioner of India in the U.K. had to put a notice in the window of the High Commission of India that India is nothing like the films of Satyajit Ray.

“India is fantasizing with the film stars in the hallucinating silver screen trance.”

And it seems that Mr Rangan wants us to be caught back in those giddy days of wine and roses without either of them.

Fifty years have gone past since the Venus of India died and we do not want to come out of the witchcraft of the wicked money minded producers.

I wonder if the title Venus of India is correct though Baburao Patel of famous Film India was a frighteningly master of the English words?

To me the Greek Goddess is the image of the artist Botticelli’s Venus coming out of ocean seductively naked with long languorous rolling golden locks.

Was Madhubala like that? Perhaps Marilyn Monroe was like that with Kennedy brothers’ eyes rolling, going over her again and again!

Make a Note: Waxing lyrical shows that some people do not want to wake up and face the heat of the day.

What I like about the Rangan’s Madhubala is his aplomb of using unusual words throughout his post and even in his comment about AK as well.

I enjoy when somebody uses strange words and make you run up to the dictionary. That way one can enrich the skimpy store of diction one carries about.

Look at these words and be bedazzled:
Seppuku, je ne sais quoi, debility, recapitulate, archaeologist’s delight, élan (I wonder the word is English or Urdu?), tow toted, Madhubala: Honey Belle, moniker, averred, equestrian, affaires de Coeur, ventricular septal defect, watershed, bruited, bandied, malapert, a frazzle, pipped, A pas de deux, ethereal, Si ipsi consentire vettent, drakes and ducks, paeans & manna (in comment number 31), (and his lamenting state on his return) man Friday, etcetera, etcetera. Many of the words I do not find in the usual Oxford dictionary when I am looking for their meanings.

I like what the reader “KB on February 15, 2019 at 7:33 pm said in the comment number 13
“Good write up and song selection. Request similar exercise on other heroines of yesteryears like Nalini Jayawant, Mala Sinha , Nimmi ,Shyama etc” :-

and I also add not just female mimers on the screen but male mimers as well because their miming of the songs make the songs good or bad as well. Mr Rangan has done very well in his main thrust of the post and as well as in his songs exemplifying.

I also enjoyed very much his writing about his return “9 months absence his flat that has left it in a bad condition despite periodic cleaning by man Friday. In 18 years of travel and return I was greeted by five mice who seem to think I am the aggressor. They had a mess of the house with mountain load of their own created garbage. Requested them with folded hands to leave. Told them they need not pay any rent for 8 months and also for the collateral damage. Seeing their adamant attitude had to take harsh measures to evict them”.

Mr Rangan is a born writer! There we have got a budding R.K. Narayan just blooming!

On the whole I am stupefied with the marvellous ability of Mr Rangan of doing an aesthetically and scholarly well laboured post.

Two songs that are right up there in 3 of my lists – the best of Sajjad, the best of Lata and the best of Madhubala:

1. ‘Kaali kaali raat re, dil bada sataaye’ by Lata (MD – Sajjad Hussain, Lyricist – D.N.Madhok), from ‘Sainyaan’ (1951)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-YoPrrTSEQ

2. ‘Woh to chale gaye aye dil’ by Lata (MD – Sajjad Hussain, Lyricist – Rajinder Krishan), from ‘Sangdil’ (1952)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0IFaLCbSBU

Note the similarity in the segments between 0:10 and 0:20 in the first song and between 0:20 and 0:30 in the second song.

While the article is about Madhubala, I can’t but help going into raptures over Sajjad’s music for both songs. One small detail that I would like to bring to the notice of SoY readers: in the line ‘jeene mein kya mazaa rahaa’ of the 2nd song, instead of placing the ‘mazaa’ such that the ‘zaa’ falls on the first ‘maatra’ of the time cycle, he delays its placement such that the ‘zaa’ falls on the 2nd beat of the time cycle, and this enhances the beauty of the song no end. (My articulation is clumsy; I look to people like SSW and Subodhji to provide a better and more accurate description).

BTW, Lata had included ‘Kaali kaali raat re’ in her ‘The Queen in Concert’ programme in 1997. And here is her brother talking about the song:

Ek Saal ….was the movie when Ravi made history of giving best of music in a single go. A great respect to the producers , actors and song writers. His teaming with Prem dhawan was fantastic . While all the songs were very melodic but the one duet remained favorite of mine for many many years. This soft romantic melody created endless bliss….

Ulajh gaaye do naina dekho…..Hemant, Lata….Ravi

The visual of this song is hard to find but one can see few seconds before the end of the film . I remember this song was filmed as background song summerising the romance blooming between Ashok Kumar and Madhubala.

I greatly enjoyed your counterpoint as much as I liked Ranganji’s presentation. You have a style of presenting your viewpoint and your candid commentary adds spice to the post. That what makes SoY special with the participation of people like you and Ranganji’s. I am sure you are not a communist. I did read your article on October revolution, but did not dare to comment. But are you a socialist or sympathetic to the Labour party?
Well I am back home from the club after my 7th peg. But I am very much on my senses , although my wife refuses to accept that. I am not a heavy drinker but when I play carrom and drink I loose count.
I decided to respond to your comment today itself because tomorrow morning, when I may not be in the right frame of mind. Hats off to you Shalanji. Duniya Ka Pathakji ek ho. Jai Ho.

Thank you very much for praising me and making me a bloated frog.

I think Venkatramji, you, and kasbhatiaji and Rangaji and myself make foursome kind club.

This reminds me a story in Sanskrit “Neeti or neaty Kathaa” that had a title called ” Aho Roopam, Aho Dhwani!”

What else I can say but would appreciate when you came out of real stupor of the previous night’s “Subah ka Alalam Kya Hoga?”

I like the way you enjoy life. I wish I could do the same but sadly my doctor and the visits I am making to the hospitals at the drop of my hat would not allow me. I would like to say “Thodisi to pee hai koi duniya ulat pulat nahi kar dee?”

But sadly the days of wine and roses are not going to come back for me.

Thanks for the two wonderful compositions of Sajjad Hussain. Your detail explanation also enhanced my listening pleasure.

“The best of Sajjad, the best of Lata and the best of Madhubala”

added to it the chemistry of Dilip Kumar Madhubala at its best. The duet Dil me sama gaye sajan (#11) posted by Ranganji and the solo Ye Hawa Ye Raat Ye Chandni bear evidence to this fact. Before I post this song, I would like to post Darshan Pyaasi Aai Daasi by Geeta Dutt.

Ye Hawa Ye Raat Ye Chandni by Talat Mahmood
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=180&v=XHs3O4f516I

Look at the intoxicating look Madhubala conveys when Dilip Kumar lip-synchs the words “teri aankh ka ye khumaar hai”, hardly for three seconds / just one single cycle of seven beats. A wonderful song which demands repeated listening.

Besides the two songs posted by you and the one by Ranganji, Siddharthji(@49) posted another nice song composed by Sajjad Hussain from the film Saiyan (1951).

I fully endorse your view about the excellence of the quality of music of Ek Saal. Johnny Walker plays a nice role as a buddy in frustrating the designs of the Lucknow vamp and his song in the diving board of swimming pool is a treat. What a grand rendering by Rafi – Kiskeliye Rokega
Here is the video of the song you quoted. The duet is rendered by a different couple and Ashok Kumar and Madhubala are mere spectators following the song closely.

Another song from ‘ Dulari ‘(1949), voice of Lata and MD – Naushad .

It is said that the on screen singer is Madhubala but I find it difficult to believe that it is the same Madhubala whom we see in later years. Or is it because the print is poor.

Ms. Shalan Lal,N venkatraman ji @69, 74 etc;

Six or Seven…thats the age at which our essential obsessions, tastes and preference….begin to get stamped on our mind by outside impressions . They don’t get easily erased even when we think we have forgotten them. Adding Seven Years further and one finds himself attaining youth …..the age of awakening ….in terms of carer , romance and other surprises . To some prefered colours, flowers , nature , hills and music ….emerge from past or from nowhere or even forced upon them too by friends and family members. Nostalagic feelings at later date adds to the recall system depending how much you have put in efforts to adopt the life as it came to you.

But in every ones mind this …..Seven Years Itch …..begins to hoover upon every one …..a have more policy !!. No doubt little things stay with us for long but the mind setup always crave for distant interests . It was a time when Marilyn Manroe was everyones remote darling residing far end of other half of universe …..though the presence of so many beautiful stars here. The fact remained that most of the cosmetics got sold over the shelf in the most quicker time . [ Duniya sabun tel…..song from Anari].

For me the look out beyond Marilyn Manroe was a good excercise …..and I landed myself in Casablanca …..the movie rated as among the ten best Hollywood movies ever made. And the star ….Ingrid Bergman….beats all the standards of beauty by miles ! A must watch movie for those who have yet to see it.

Bollywood in early 80s made a copy of this great movie by the name of …Armaan…starring Raj Babbar , Ranjeeta , shammi Kapoor …etc. I have glanced thru this hindi remake in quick mode….jumping every ten minutes …..and I am still in shock why at all this remake was made and why not all the actors protested for this very mistake.

Still to each his own . here is a small piece of clip from Casablanca with a short song…well from my side.

Play it ,Sam……

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vThuwa5RZU&t=174s

But I must say Polka Dots suits both …..Bergman and Madhubala. Their dress sense par excellence !!

It seems like we have arrived at one of those mutual back-scratching scenarios. Nice idea, especially when we may have difficulty in reaching the exact itching spots in our backs, somewhat a frozen shoulder situation.

Ups and downs are part of life. I was off for 6 months, but I am back on my heels. There are restrictions. I have set them aside for the time being. But I am not qualified to advice you on this. Praying for your best of health and continued association with SoY.

You wrote about an itch of a different kind. Seven Years Itch. You anecdotes and reflections make an interesting reading. Why don’t you start writing articles for SoY. You are the only one among the quartet mentioned by Shalanji left to present a full length post. Ingrid Bergman was very graceful and beautiful. A film critic once said of Ingrid Bergman, “She had a combination of rare beauty, freshness, vitality and ability that is as uncommon as a century plant in bloom”.

N Venkatraman ji @82;

We really missed you when you were off for some time.

One has to choose to make best use of time given to us. For the past ten days or so I too was getting myself checked up for some health issues triggered by the cold wave ….which still is not leaving the doors. Still hoping the clouds would open up soon and blue clear sky emerging …..giving a sense of belonging to the beautiful universe of great depth….rather than giving a sense of sitting in a corner of grey coloured room. Well life is like that ….either fight the obstacles or tiptoe on your fours all the time.

The Hospital Doctor performing Echo and ECG test was too jolly . I ask him if he is enjoying echo sounds of songs that myself enjoyed for so many years . He laughed and said he is hearing only humming and resonance sound only . In that case , I told him that he can use my data to find the velocity of sound !!

Well with time every joint, muscles and tissues do get ruptured or sheared that are proportionate to age . Ms. Shalan Lal, Rangan ji and others have been asking me to do some writing on subject of interest . I bet there could be many …but as said earlier too….being Heart Patient and Diabetic it will be a huge task for me. ..But writing little titbits makes me a good sense of belonging to this wonderful group. All of you have a wealth of knowledge and it is a matter of pride for me to acquire the same thru sharing.

D P Rangan ji ;

At my observations # 84 , I mentioned about the blue sky which I have been waiting for my warmth feeling . Well here I bet is a song wherein Madhubala gave best of her expressive face …..mystery adding with Cameraman’s beautiful movement capturing the depth of acting. Cucoo singing the song and Madhubala dancing on OPN offbeat waltz and dholak beats …..and the wordings…..Neele aasmani….both colours fav.of mine.

A following song and writing is doing the rounds in whattsup and other social media. I would like to share it here.

Don’t let the old man in, I wanna leave this alone
Can’t leave it up to him, he’s knocking on my door
And I knew all of my life, that someday it would end
Get up and go outside, don’t let the old man in

Many moons I have lived
My body’s weathered and worn
Ask yourself how would you be
If you didn’t know the day you were born

Try to love on your wife
And stay close to your friends
Toast each sundown with wine
Don’t let the old man in

Many moons I have lived
My body’s weathered and worn
Ask yourself how would you be
If you didn’t know the day you were born

When he rides up on his horse
And you feel that cold bitter wind
Look out your window and smile
Don’t let the old man in

Toby Keith’s (American singer and songwriter) song, “Don’t Let the Old Man In,” tells the story of a man doing his best to not let the years catch up to him. While this common tale could ring true for so many, it actually came from a real conversation that the singer had with legendary actor-director Clint Eastwood. According to a press release, Keith actually spent some time with Eastwood this past May at Eastwood’s golf tournament in California. While the two men shared a golf cart, their conversation turned to what Eastwood was working on next.

“Funny you should ask,” Eastwood told Keith. “I am leaving tomorrow to shoot a movie for three months called The Mule.”

Keith seemed surprised by the comment, as Eastwood is 88 years old. So Keith asked him how he keeps up such a schedule at his age, to which Eastwood simply replied “I don’t let the old man in.”
Keith would go on to write a song inspired by the conversation and it was included in The Mule. Keith has also released a music video for the song featuring various scenes from the movie, which tells the story of an older man who finds himself working as a drug courier. The movie was released last December.

Here is a link to the story.

This was what Shammi Kapoor told in an interview about Madhubala .
‘When I met her on the set of Rail Ka Dibba for the first time, I could not take my eyes off her. I was like hit by a thunderbolt,’ he had confessed.
In spite of his overt self-confidence and cavalier disposition, he was ‘extremely nervous’ taking Madhubala in his arms for an intimate scene. ‘I was so nervous that I kept forgetting my lines,’ he had said. ‘And she was fully aware of the effect she had been having on me and was relishing it thoroughly.’
He just couldn’t stop the rhapsody: ‘She was breathtakingly beautiful… Woh jab paani peeti thi toh aisa lagta tha jaise yahan se (runs his finger down his neck) ek nas mein se paani guzarta hua neeche ja raha hai… (when she drank water, it was as if I could see water flowing down her throat). She was so delicate.’
‘I must admit, in spite of knowing that Madhu was already in love, I could not resist falling madly in love with her. No one can blame me for it. Even today, after meeting so many women and having had relationships with God knows how many, I can swear that I have never seen a more beautiful woman. Add to that her sharp intellect, maturity, poise and sensitivity. She was awesome.’

Simply beautiful song……Don’t let the old man in. lyrics , filming and singing . Shot in Colorado ….my favorite place where I stayed some time in 1988 …..enjoying the snowscapes and Garden of the Gods .

No energy pill is required to live your life to the fullest . God gave us endless opertunities…..only mindset tuning is required to enjoy even silence too. Life itself is like a cable suspended bridge….of long spans….some time made unstable with strong winds cross attacking …..shaking the lives of the poor and rich alike . At one end of the abutment we see many Orphans looking for support system and at other end people begging for family support systems .

I appreciate your musing down the memory lane and rumination of the films of Marilyn Monroe in “Seven year Itch” and Ingrid Bergman in the all time great film “Casablanca”.

Both had very different styles in impressing Hollywood filmgoers and were known as the screen goddesses that time and forever.

I saw many times Ingrid Bergman in her last days when she was living in a flat in Chelsea, London. I lived in a rented room in a nearby house. She would come for a walk in the Chelsea Square and sit on a garden bench. She was on her own and nothing like her filmy image. She was all shriveled up no light in her eyes always looking up in the sky. She died shortly on 29 August 1982 (aged 67).

In a London’s Trafalgar Square’s famous International Church a service was done that was attended by full house.

I too went and overheard somebody was saying “even the filmy goddess dies like a common person”. On the church organ the famous notes from the famous song from “Casablanca” was played as the audience were dispersing. This song is quoted by you.

She was cremated in the Kensington Cemetery and her ashes were sent to Stockholm, Sweden.

Ingrid Bergman had connection with India and Nehru.

There is one autobiography credited on her name and I read it. In which she mentioned an incident about her Ex husband Roberto Rossellini with whom she eloped when he came to America leaving her first Swedish husband and ten years daughter without telling him and her daughter. Later she married Roberto in Rome and produced a son and two daughters for him.

Roberto Rossellini was the father of “Italian Realities” in filmography and very much honoured. His “Roma, Citė Appartè” is very famous. This film and his other films influenced European and Japanese film makers. Satyajit Roy too was influenced by his films.

But with women concerned he was extremely a rogue person. He was invited by the Indian Documentary Films Department and was assisted by Sunalini DasGupta and her husband. He had an affair with Sunalini and Indian press gave immediate publicity. Indian nationalist got mad and they “Gheraved” him and Sunnalini in their hotel room for many days. The people’s mood was to kill him alive.

Roberto phoned Ingrid who was acting in a play in Paris for help. She took leave of absence from the play and arrived in London. Nehru was on visit to London. Vijayalaxmi Pundit was the High Commissioner and Nehru was living in the High Commissioner’s house in the Kensington Garden. Nehru agreed to meet Ingrid Bergman in the rear garden of the High Commissioner’s house. In her book there is a graphic description of the intense meeting.

Later on Morarji Desai who was the Chief Minister of Bombay state arranged a night escort to Roberto Rossellini and Sunalini Dasgupta to the Bombay Airport to a night plane to Rome.

Ingrid gave divorce to Roberto and Sunalini and Roberto got married. This affair was very sensational and Indian press and filmy world went on about it for months.

His documentary film on India was never released in India but it was shown in Europe and once I saw it in Paris. It is fairly good and his realistic touches were all over the film.

Ingrid Bergman is mentioned by many writers of Hollywood. But the books written on Marilyn would fill up one big room in a library.

Ms. Shalan Lal 291, 92;

While a new article has come up….my mind is still making rounds and rounds of beauties that lived their time entertaining us on recall and revisits. You are really lucky to have seen Ingrid Bergman in living mode . For me Casablanca is a treat to watch and its HD movie disc is my priced posession. On Theatre [ Plaza , New Delhi ] ….I have seen …The Visit ….which again I liked it for intense performances of her and Anthony Quinn .

You are perfectly right ….the Marilyn Manroe ruled the Musicals of the mid 40s thru 60s …..and she was the most watched heroin of that time. Musicals were emerging from every corner with other heroins like…Shirley Maclean , Judy Holiday, Rita , Doris Day, Barbra…..and so on. Large stage set ups with cinema scope photography adding to the big dimensions . But failure of some big budget musical movies like ….Hello Dolly changed the mind sets of the producers who reverted to low budget musicals. Once again tables were turned and we saw the re
emerging of big budget movies like ….Cabaret, Moulin Roughe etc.

Remember the Cabin Hut where MM stayed in her movie ….NIAGARA…is still there on Canada side with Random Rubble Stone masonry walls . The most priced view for any one visiting that place.

Shalan ji , I was again down with my health issues . Sitting for more than an hour or so makes my feet and legs to swell. ….Usual for a condition when heart is in slow pumping mode or due to water retention . Surely my medication is proper and I am in a happy and healthy mood. I must state I am enjoying the beautiful articles and inputs of observations and comments of every one . By the way any name given to the club of four ?

N Venkatraman ji @95;

I think Beauty is best prescription for me and I will hold the topic till I put on my ….dancing shoes back.

It is a great surprise to know of Ingrid Bergman dying on the day of her birth…born 29 august 1915 and died 29 august 1982. And Marylin Manroe died on 5 th August …the day when Madhubala’s greatest epic Mughal E Azam was released …..though a gap of two years exist.

All these beautiful actresses had a great feature in their charms , specially eyes, smiles….and what matter most was High Cheekbones that all of them carried . Sophia Loren was the one that followed the brigade and starred with almost all the famous American and Italiano actors . Here is a compilation of a song that shows her co stars….

Sophia Loren & americano

Back to Madhubala and a song that captures the best of romantic scene ever filmed .

Bhatiaji @ 96,
It seems you are not in a mood to shift to the blues soon. Thanks for the song that shows her co stars….and some wild side of Sophia Loren and the contrasting song which shows the soft side of Madhubala.

A few more Madhubala’s songs.

Ms. Shalan Lal , D P Rangan ji, N Venkatraman ji ;

This journey across the globe went very well with all of us . Looking here and there added charms appreciating not only songs but the small historical past as well.

Well a few more songs were still hidden and are emerging as conclusive bidding byes.

N Venkatraman ji @97;

Yes, I will switch to blues soon ….after listening to the huge stock of Talats non filmi songs . If blues are not there i am sure there are other good rainbow colours to choose from.

Out of the first 100 comments on this write-up , 24 are from Venkatraman ji and 20 are from Bhatia ji. This is a reflection of their enthusiasm , deep understanding / study of the subject and I compliment them for their valuable contribution.

Shalan Lal ji has been fortunate to have personally interacted with celebrity Ingrid Bergman. I have not even seen Madhubala except on screen and so alongwith what I read about her , it is the cameraman, light effects, make up artistes, the costume designers, the directors and producers who have given me any idea about her.

I learn that Bhatia ji is gradually recovering from illness. I wish him a speedy recovery.

Here is a link to another song that shows Madhubala in a different situation — from ‘Howrah Bridge ‘ (1958),
‘Aayie Meharbaan…’ , MD OP Nayyar , singer Asha Bhosle..

Mr. S Joseph ;

Thanks for your kind words and compliments . With like minded people around one can have pleasent journey . Everyone contributing in their own best way ……and adding personal touches enhanced the pleasure.

On screen presence of Madhubala was a bonus in itself when others were singing the song . In another of Howrah Bridge song…..Mohabbat ka haath jawani ka palla….see the best of romantic expressions captured by the cinematographer .

Thanks for the mention of Vinod Mehara film “Elan ” with Shankar Jaikishan Music.

The Mehboob film “Elan” of 1947 I would like to mention for your interest. It had music by Naushad and had ten songs, lyrics by Zia Sarhadi, all became famous but three songs I would like to mention here:

Famous songs 1) Aainemein Ek Chandsi Surat Najar Aai sung by Surendra,
Mentioned in the Wrap up number 3 of 1947 songs by AK

Following two songs needed to be mentioned in the Wrap up of 1947. But they were not as perhaps no one was aware of them.

The number three song “Insan Ki Tahjeeb Pe….” is an excellent lyric that has poetry and lyricism and both singers do just the right kind of justice.

2) Allah Nigahwan, Tera Allahawan Nigahawan…. Sung by Amirbai

3) Insan Ki Tahjeeb Pe Ehasaan Hamara….Sung by Surendra and Amirbai

The film was acted in, by Surendra, Munwar Sultana, and with many songs.

This was perhaps last film of Mehboob on the Muslim social themes.

MADHUBALA ‘S BEAUTY CAN NEVER BE “OVERSTATED “.SHE WAS WAY AHEAD OF THE ACTRESSES YOU CHOOSE TO MENTION. RABINDRA NATH TAGORE SAID BEAUTY LIES IN THE EYES OF THE BEHOLDER.BUT ONE SHOULD BE AWARE OF ONE’S BLIND SPOT .

105 Razi MUJTABA November 8, 2019 at 2:21 pm

WHAT AN INSIGHT.I WAS ALSO DISAPPOINTED TO REALISE THAT MADHUBALA ‘S BEAUTY WAS NOT TO BE FOUND IN MAHAL.

106 Razi MUJTABA November 9, 2019 at 12:31 pm

MADHUBALA’S NAUGHTY OUTBURSTS WERE OFFSHOOTS OF THE SADNESS THAT TOOK ROOTS IN THE CORE OF HER BEING.SHE WAS A RESTLESS SOUL WANDERING IN A WORLD OF WORRIES AND FAKE LOVE .

107 razi mujtaba December 23, 2019 at 12:31 am

So far NONE of the commentators has mentioned the following melodious song of Tarana that I have to do:yin chup chup k yaad rahe mera aane topped with the charm of MADHUBALA THE VENUS and her INNOCENT expressions and candid gestures

108 razi_mutaba December 25, 2019 at 8:29 pm

Madhubala has now become a cult. None of her Contemporaries possess even a fraction of her histrionics or her PRISTINE BEAUTY. As regards Shyama’s claim it reflects an inferiority complex on her part.

109 razi_mutaba December 26, 2019 at 1:18 am

Correction:yun chhup chhup k chhup k chhup k yaad rahe mera aana

110 razi_mutaba December 26, 2019 at 3:33 pm

Fluttering like a moth from from flame I turn back to TARANA after having watched Amar,SANGDIL and MUGHAL E AZAM. Oblivious to the lack of REALISM I am infatuated by its SOULFUL ROMANCE sustained by the amazing acting and breath taking BEAUTY of MADHUBALA. TARANA IS BALM FOR BRUISED HEARTS.

Correction. from flame to flame

TILL date NONE of the BOLLYWOOD heroines have had the good fortune to vie with MADHUBALA in terms of Beauty and Glamour. As if GOD has written the last word on the page of histrionics in terms of MADHUBALA. May God rest her in peace and seat her as the queen in heaven.

113 razimujtaba December 31, 2019 at 5:15 pm

Best Actress award should have been given to MADHUBALA for her SUPERB acting in MOGHUL E AZAM. FILM GATE’S GROSS INJUSTICE IN THIS IS:
U N F O R G I V E A B L E …

NOT AT ALL A DUPLICATE COMMENT. IT IS A CORRECTION OF THE EARLIER ONE.PLZZZ.

116 razi_mutaba January 4, 2020 at 9:40 pm

Leaving aside all the her films Madhubala’s performance in TARANA :COMEDIC and MUGHAL E AZAM :TRAGEDIC are enough to claim her unsurpassed and UNSARPASSABLE acting.SHE IS AND REMAINS THE SUPREME ACTRESS OF BOLLYWOOD.

117 razi_mutaba January 6, 2020 at 12:50 am

Correction. Leaving aside all her.

118 razi_mutaba January 6, 2020 at 12:59 am

IF YOU WISH TO SEE WHAT SUPERB ACTING IS LIKE WATCH THE SCENE IN TARANA ON THE PILOT OF THE PLANE THAT CRASHED.HE HAS COME TO TARANA ‘s ABODE TO TAKE DILIP BACK HOME.WHEN MADHUBALA LEARNS THIS SHE IS UPSET LIKE A MOTH STRUCK BY SOMEONE. HER FACIAL EXPRESSION AND HER BODY LANGUAGE SPELL MIRACLES.

119 razi_mutaba January 10, 2020 at 1:05 am

Shyama’s remarks on MADHUBALA ‘S BEAUTY being inferior to that of BINA Rafi’s is
Nothing but BLINDNESS if not JEALOUSY. Those who wish to know how BINA RAI was awarded the FILMFARE award of best actress for her mediocre performance in film GHUNGAT VS MADHUBALA ‘S perfect and SUPERB acting in M.E.A.K.Asif’s
Magnum Opus are cordially advised to read Dawn’s Article:50 YEARS WITHOUT MADHUBALA.

120 razi_mutaba February 20, 2020 at 3:30 pm

Not only that but what is baffling is that not glimpse of MADHUBALA can be seen in the Film MAHAL. Why then accolades lavished on HER. SWING AND A BOAT DRIFTING LISTLESSLY.IS THAT ACTING???

121 razi_mutaba February 20, 2020 at 3:34 pm

The remark on my comments is ridiculous
I HAVEN’T SAID AT ALL WHAT I AM SAYING NOW

122 razi_mutaba February 22, 2020 at 11:49 pm

Sridevi not even a fraction of the BEAUTY,ACTING OR ANY DEPARTMENT OF HISTRIONIC. ONE IS HURT TO WITNESS SUCH AVERAGE WOMEN BEING ACCLAIMED AS SUPERIOR TO THE GREAT MADHUBALA.

123 D P Rangan July 29, 2020 at 4:23 pm

Razi Mutabaji
I welcome you to SOY on behalf of the blog master AKji.
It was purely by accident I opened this post and was amazed to see your comments on Madhubala from 104 to 122. Profuse apologies for this tardy response after such a lapse of time. In those days I was residing in Canada and USA and commuting between them and was otherwise kept busy by grand children.
Your superlative eulogy for this Venus of Bollywood is a sincere reflection of your thoughts and I second them fully.
Who will not be in trance when viewing the film Tarana. It was a superb portrayal of how a love affair would shine in the silver screen. The ditty you have mentioned @107 bears this out. Here is the link for it. Combination of Dina Nath Madhok and Anil Biswas is felt throughout the movie.

To none in particular

I am not in the habit of adding more songs in the comment portion of posts written by me. One cannot be rigid all the time. I stumbled across this song by serendipity. It appeared to be so rare I decided to post.

Film : Malika Salomi (1953) – M D – Krishan Dayal, Lyrist – Farooq Quaiser
