The best songs of Rafi for any music director would include a number of duets. So it is for Madan Mohan, despite the fact that his solos for Rafi are significantly more than the duets. That is an exception to the general trend of duets being far more in number than male solos. Since we are doing a tandem series on Roshan and Madan Mohan, we have seen in the case of Roshan that his duets for Rafi are far more than his solos. In the case of Madan Mohan-Rafi, out of a total of 168 songs, solos are more than 90, and duets are about 75. But the sheer number of duets makes a post on this necessary to enjoy the full charm of their association.
I mentioned in the earlier post why duets are also important for musical reasons, such as the scope of greater creativity for the music director, more variety of songs, and opportunity for the ‘other’ female singers to get a chance to sing with the main male singer. All these are present in plenty in Madan Mohan too.
Madan Mohan used Rafi’s voice in his very first film, Aankhen (1950), for the solo Hum ishq mein barbaad hain barbaad raheinge. Thereafter, he used him fairly regularly, creating memorable songs, both solos and duets along the way. There is some contrast with Roshan here, whose major output with Rafi, both in numbers and the superlative quality, took a big leap in the second half of his career, i.e. in the 60s.
Madan Mohan’s association with Lata Mangeshkar is the stuff of legend. But for duets with Rafi, he was quite open about ‘other’ singers, and that was not only because of the spat between Rafi-Lata for some years. With so much to go for their duets, I am presenting some of my favourite Rafi duets composed by Madan Mohan.
1. Jhoom jhoom ke do deewane (with Laxmi Shankar) from Mastana (1954), lyrics Rajendra Krishna
We have seen some great Rafi solos in this film: the philosophical solo Mat bhool are insaan, and the carefree Duniya ke saare ghamon se begana, main hun mastna. We see the same carefree attitude in the street entertainers, Moti Lal and Master Romi (?), the renowned classical singer Laxmi Shankar singing for the boy. Itinerant singers on Bombay streets is one of the most abiding images of the city in our films.
2. Do ghadi wo jo paas aa baithe (with Lata Mangeshkar) from Gateway of India (1957), lyrics Rajendra Krishna
This film had a couple of Lata Mangeshkar’s superb songs – Na hanso humse zamaane ke hai thukaraye huye and Sapne mein sajan se do baatein ek yaad rahi ek bhool gaye. This romantic duet you would visualise in the moonlit night amidst nature, but the romance between a poet and his admirer is a common theme in our films. The superb poetry of Rajendra Krishna becomes the vehicle for the flowering of the yet undeclared love between Bharat Bhushan and Madhubala.
3. Dil haseenon se lagana koi humse seekh le (with Shamshad) Begum from Khota Paisa (1958), lyrics Rajendra Krishna
If there was Johnny Walker in a film, there had to be a song picturised on him. Such songs became quite popular and, often, the high point of the film. Madan Mohan follows the prescription to create this excellent qawwali muqabala, the main qawwal (Johnny Walker, who else?) is in his elements surrounded by a bevy of females. The man on the harmonium, dholak, other instruments, rhythmic clapping – all classic elements of a qawwali are present in this song, with the female part ably provided by Shamshad Begum. I had missed this song while doing a post on Roshan-Madan Mohan’s qawwalis. I am happy to present it here.
4.Ye hawa ye mastana mausam dil ko phir qarar aya (with Lata Mangeshkar) from Akeli Mat Jaiyo (1963), lyrics Rajendra Krishna
I remember this film for the quintessential Madan Mohan-Lata Mangeshkar song, Wo jo milte the kabhi humse deewanon ki tarah, aaj milte hain jaise kabhi pahchaan na thi. And then you have this lovely duet which creates an entirely different mood – one of joy, and jhoomana – to borrow an expression from Subodh. Madan Mohan embeds different elements in this duet. The lovers are by themselves in natural surroundings, there is a monkey playing on the branches of a tree, there is a pair of birds (two for love), and there is a tonga, but because of Lata Mangeshkar (and not Asha Bhosle) the song reminds me more of Shankar-Jaikishan style (rather than OP Nayyar).
5. Ye to kaho kaun ho tum meri bahar tumhi to nahi (with Lata Mangeshkar) from Akeli Mat Jaiyo
Another duet from the same film, a duet that is more a solo, because Rafi confirms only ‘Yes, my darling’, to her questions.
I spoke of Madan Mohan and Shankar-Jaikishan in the same breadth. The mukhada of the above duet will instantly remind the SoY veterans of this Mukesh song.
Ye to kaho, kaun ho tum, mujhse poochhe bina dil mein aane lage by Mukesh from Aashiq (1962), lyrics Shailendra, music Shankar-Jaikishan
6. Mujhe ye phool na de tujhe dilbari ki kasam (with Suman Kalyanpur) from Ghazal (1964), lyrics Sahir Ludhiyanavi
This duet is closer to recitation which demands greater ability and confidence from the singers as well as the music director.
7. Ab do dilon ki mushkil aasan ho gayi hai (with Asha Bhosle) from Pooja Ke Phool (1964), lyrics Rajendra Krishna
In Lata Mangeshkar solo in this film, Meri aankhon se koi neend liye jata hai, Madan Mohan was in familiar territory with his signature style. This joyous romantic duet by Rafi and Asha Bhosle allows Madan Mohan to add variety and display his ‘other’ side.
8. Tum ho haseen kahan ke, hum chaand aasman ke (with Asha Bhosle) from Sharabi (1964), lyrics Rajendra Krishna
This fun duet picturised on Dev Anand and Madhubala I heard for the first time, and I guess it may be new for many readers, reminding you of several other duets picturised on the pair. I especially thought of Achchhaji ji main haari piya, composed by SD Burman. The nok-jhonk has been replaced by more playful point-counterpoint of sarcasm replied by a confident repartee. Does it have anything to with the fact that Madan Mohan assisted SD Burman?
9. Baad muddat ke ye ghadi ayi (with Suman Kalyanpur) from Jahan Ara (1964), lyrics Rajendra Krishna
Madan Mohan showed he was the King of Ghazal in Jahan Ara. Even if the film bombed, his ghazals for Talat Mahmood’s are immortal. He shows his class and elegance in this leisurely-paced ghazal composed as a duet.
(Translation of the first two stanzas)
This moment has come after a long time
You came, and my life came back
The love finally succeeded after several sacrifices
A speck of dust has achieved glory
Thanks a lot for coming My Lord
My poor abode has been blessed
The Eid has come after ages
But I sighted my moon even before Eid
10. Main teri nazar ka suroor hun….Jab jab tumhein bhulaya tum aur yaad aye by Lata Mangeshkar & Asha Bhosle from Jahan Ara (1964), lyrics Rajendra Krishna
Now in an exception to the theme of the post, here is a Lata-Asha duets – one of their best. The long recital preceding the song creates mood for pathos. The duet picturised on Minoo Mumtaz and Aruna Irani depicts the emotions of the leading lady Mala Sinha. The fellow blogger and SoY regular, Anu has written a nice post on the theme ‘You feel, I sing’.
11. Lijiye dil ka thukrana, lijiye aankh ka shukrana (with Asha Bhosle) from Naya Kanoon (1965), lyrics Hasrat Jaipuri
This song in a recording studio is fast-paced and quite delightful. I would not like to attribute it to OP Nayyar-influence.
12. Tere paas aa ke mera waqt guzar jata hai (with Asha Bhosle) from Neela Aakash (1965), lyrics Raja Menhdi Ali Khan
Before he became a He-man, Dharmendra had established his presence as a romantic hero. He had another nice duet with Mala Sinha in the film, Aapko pyar chhupane ki buri aadat hai. I chose this one as it appears farther from OP Nayyar style.
13. Husn jab jab ishq se takra gaya (with Asha Bhosle) from Neend Hamari Khwab Tumhare (1966), lyrics Rajendra Krishna
Madan Mohan continues to compose two Rafi-Asha Bhosle duets in a film. If it was because of Lata Mageshkar’s ‘boycott’, she seems to be the only loser, because Rafi’s voice modulation, gliding from low to high notes is more unrestrained, Asha Bhosle is in her elements, and Madan Mohan creates a gorgeous song for the music lovers. The other duet Kabhi tera daaman na chhodenge hum is also quite well-known. This film had some more superlative songs – Rafi’s Yun rootho na haseena and Asha Bhosle’s Koi shikawa bhi nahin koi shikayat bhi nahi have been earlier included in the post on Madan Mohan’s solos for these singers.

Good selection of songs,as usual.
A breezy one from GATEWAY OF INDIA, picturised on Johnny Walker and Madhubala.
You would expect Asha Bhonsle to be the female voice here, but it is Lata.
Rajinder Kishen.
Dekhta chala gaya main zindagi ke raah mein
Har koi kadam kadam pe masth hai gunaah mein….

Dr Shetty,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Dekhta chala gaya is a nice song.
AKji,
Nice post again.
The silver lining in Lata-Rafi spat was that other singers got the chance to sing which is a common complaint otherwise. I feel on royalty issue Lata had a point which was wrongly construed as arrogance.
The lack of success would have made MM compose in the style of different and popular composers of that time which is evident in many songs in this post.
Also, Rajendra Krishna comes out as a very prolific writer . Most of the songs in this post are by him. Do ghadi wo jo paas aa baithe….is beautifully written.
Here is another delightful song from MM-Rajendra Krishna combo. This seems to be in the style of CR.
Ae Humsafar bata de- RAFI- LATA FILM -MOHAR(1959)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oq8I2DiFFu8
Btw , song no.10 has no Rafi in it.
Some great songs there, AK – especially the ones from Jahanara, which (despite its possibly other attraction for me – the history) is loved by me just for its music.
Here’s another duet (Asha and Rafi) that I love. Zameen se humein aasmaan par from Adalat:

We were eagerly waiting for this post after a similar one on Roshan.
Nice selection of songs.!!
Your favourites and those of contributors, leave nothing much to be dug up now. Still, I would request for following additions:
1 Aakhri Dao-Humsafar Saath Apna Chhod Chale-Asha & Rafi-Majrooh

Siddharth,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. I have mentioned in song #10 that I am making an exception. Ae humsafar bata de is a nice song.
I am very confused about royalty over film music. Earlier, only the film producer had copyright over the music. Informally, he shared half of it with the music director. Subsequently it was formalised. Amendment of the Copyrights Act in 2012 perhaps recognised singers’ rights. In all this there is no mention of the lyricists’ who are the original creators of songs. Singers were added in the pie because of the notion that they added value. On that logic in many songs the actors have added the main value. I am thinking of Amitabh Bachchan in Khaike paan Banaraswala.
Madhu,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Zameen se humein aasman par is an outstanding song.
Rakeshji,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Songs #2, 3, 7 and 8 were new to me. Of these Ladi aankh se aankh I liked a lot. Thanks a lot.
Another excellent post.
The first song was a new introduction, enjoyed all the songs.
Tum Ho Haseen Kahan Ke is such a wonderful song. It was on my list of duets of Asha with MM.
I love the song.
Thank you.
Anup
🙂
Anup,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation.
AK ji ,
Nice post .
Nice selection of songs .
Johny bhai ‘s qawwali was new for me . Enjoyed .
My favourite Rafi – Lata duet is
” छडी रे छडी , कैसी गलेमें पडी ”
A very pleasant tune , nicely picturized one .
Thnx for this post AK ji .
Godbole ji,
I don’t know why! The two versions of Dil dhoondta hai phir wohi ( Bhupinder Singh, Lata; Bhupinder Singh) blew away my mind to such an extent, the good songs, Chadi re chadi and Rukhe Rukhe se kadam don’t excite me! Of course, pure bias! The Asha Bhonsle song Mere ishq mein is just average.
What brilliant performances by Sanjeev Kumar and Sharmila Tagore!
Sir i wonder why did MM chose bhupinder over Rafi for this song
Sir i wonder why MM chose bhupinder over rafi for this dong
AK,
Thanks for the lovely post.
10 days early or are we in for a surprise?
I am in rush to go, will we back soon with some missed ones before it is exhausted 🙂
For now this one beautiful one of the besr MM Rafi duet Kahin Chal Na De Raat Ka Kya Thikana Ek Shola
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvu_DY-SnQE
Pramodji,
Thanks a lot fo your appreciation. Somehow I was never impressed by Chhadi re chhadi. To my mind, it lacked the elegance and class of Madan Mohan.
Mumbaikar8,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. You are missing Madan Mohan’s ‘other’ singers. That should be the fitting finale.
AK,
I think, you did not get what I implied.
I wonder why did MM chose bhupendra over rafi for dil dhondta hai
Rafi was his favourite singer
Then why bhupendra for such iconic song
Nice and varied selection of songs, but speaking for myself, jo baat Roshan ke duets mein hai Madan Mohan mein nahin. 🙂 I like all the songs posted, some like, ‘do ghadi woh jo”, a lot, but I don’t *adore* them as I do so many of the duets composed by Roshan. IMO, there’s nothing comparable to a “paon choo lene do” or “chha gaye badal” in MM’s ouvere.
That said, here the one Rafi duet by Madan Mohan that reaches Roshanesque levels of beauty for me:
Tum jo mil gaye ho – Hanste Zakhm, w/Lata Mangeshkar, Kaifi Azmi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mJGL4alChw
AK ji ;
Thanks for the showers of duet songs of Rafi , a great singer for a great master composer Madan Mohan ….one of the most respected Music Director by his seniors and juniors alike. MM had a wide spectrum of creations……. touching the Emotions , Joy/ Happiness , Ghazals and Romance . Heart melt feelings of Naushad sahib is well known to all of us .
While most of the songs have been contributed by our fellow friends but still I will try to post of my fav. which I think everyone will agree.
1. Hum bulate hi rahe…..Rafi, Aasha…Dekh Kabira Roya …..a melody par excellence . Rhythm , beats and touches of harmonium are awesome . A very well made composition for very appropriate lyrics.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A08rgZaOfxk
2. Hum safar saath apna chhod chhale…..Rafi, Aasha….Aakhri Dao….what to say about this beautiful duet….an ultimate of a creation that brings each emotions to the fore front and orchestra playing counter emotions in the back ground !! . This song has been rated as one of the ten best duets of Rafi and Asha ……and desrve to be a winner.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCt2PeLwKTU
…..will be back with some more duets.
Harpreet,
Bhupinder has really sung it superbly. Madan Mohan had earlier used his voice to good effect in Hoke majboor mujhe usne bhulaya hoga.
Shalini,
Thanks. I am also very fond of Roshan. Comparisons between two greats may not be expedient, but I also have greater liking for Roshan.
KS Bhatiaji,
You are welcome. I am happy you enjoyed the post. Hum bulate hi rahe and Humsafar saath apna chhod chale were also in my shortlist.
AK ji;
Both these songs are my fav. and so could not hold myself posting them for the reason given . Like wise two songs from Gateway of India…..do ghadi wo jo paas ….and ….dekhta chala gaya mein …..too stands as fav. of mine . For continuity here are two songs that gave a feeling of amazing range that both Lata and Rafi possesed for translating the emotions thru modilations.
3. Is reshmi pazeeb ki jhankar ke sadke….Rafi, Lata…Laila Majnu
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bup7zzbsqRo
4. Likh kar tera naam zamin par….Rafi, Lata…Laila Majnu
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otBwrv5vCQo
Harpreet,
Bhupendir was Gulzar’s favourite and Bhupendir always lived up to his expectations.
KS Bhatiaji,
Madan Mohan’s songs of 70s sound very different from his songs of 50s and 60s. I am partial towards the earlier period.
Somehow, when it came to duets, across the entire work of MM, Asha Rafi combo had the lion’s share and all concerned in these creations did full justice to them, making one hardly feel the absence of Lata – Whether they relate to the Lata-Rafi spat period or the rest of the time-frame !!
Can learned contributors throw any light on this to see whether MM had a conscious design for this or was it just a coincidence? Especially, more so considering Lata’s role in MM’s career !!
Chellamaniji (comment 28) I am trying to answer your question to be best of my ability. The parting of ways for a few years did make a major difference to the duets of Lata Mangeshkar and Mohd. Rafi. I depended on which was the prominent singer for the composer to take a call on his selection. Also, for a solo the more dominant singer played an important role but in a duet, the producer who was hard on finances did make compromises.
Thank you for sharing the two Laila Majnu duets Bhatiaji (comment 25).
However, unfortunately, due to some reason beyond my understanding, Laila Majnu songs were not credited to the individual composers, but the whole album was credited to Madan Mohan and Jaidev.
Out of the 9 songs in the film, 6 songs were completely recorded by Madan Mohanji, and three songs, ie.Laila Majnu do badan ik jaan, Yeh deewane ki zid and the duet you have mentioned, i.e. Likhkar tera naam zameen par were recorded by Jaidevji after Madanji passed away in 1975.
Akji,
I appreciate that you are doing a tandem series on Roshan and Madan Mohan this year. It is unfortunate that I was away from SoY for almost six months. After a quick browse through the articles that appeared in SoY since my last visit, I note that this is the 10th post on the theme. I hope there will be a few more post to come on this theme. Thanks for the nice post and good selection of songs.
Here is duet of Rafi with Chandbala. I believe this the first duet sung by Md.Rafi for Madan Mohan.
Rut Mastaanee O Saamane Hai Raanee, film Anjam(1952), lyrics Qamar Jalalabadi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fg0xdnqjlfA
It seems that there is an influence of Husnlal-Bhagatram in this duet, Rut Mastaanee O Saamane Hai Raanee
Great share as usual….There is absolutely no doubt that Roshan Saab’s duets far outshine the ones in today’s list…
Most of the ones shared are insignificant and comedy ones, barring a few….I am adding to the list a few more which are missing in the list or in the comments section. Some maybe unheard.

N Venkataramanji,
Welcome back to SoY. You were being missed here. Hope you are now up and kicking. Rut mastani is a very nice song. Thanks a lot for showcasing the other side of Madan Mohan.
May I add one more from Jailor to the above list?
A song with absolute Punjabi tadka

Meri Hirani Jaisi Chaal
Asha Rafi
AKji:
Wonderful post that has left us salivating for the next one on ‘other’ singers. Duets composed by MM do suffer in comparison because of the very high standards set by the solos composed by him. Here is ‘Le Gayaa Dekho Dekho Dil Bhee Hamaaraaa’ (Rafi, Geeta in Samunder):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJJlsn9iYfU
I really like jis din se maine tum ko dekha hai from Parwana
Grt song
Sangeeta ji @30;
Thanks for clarifications on songs of Laila Majnu . I saw the movie when it was released. At that time we were not knowing of the songs composed by Jaidev …..and we all that we knew were as its Madan ji’s music. Likh kar tera naam jameen par….is so close to MM composition , it looks like Madan ji composed and Jaidev recorded it.
Here is a Asha ,Rafi duet from Woh Kaun Thi ….a song that shows the western interests of Madan Mohan ji . This duet is rarely posted or recollected . I think there are some more western style songs which Madan ji composed . Will follow when recollected.
Tiki Riki Tiki Riki Totri……..

Sangeetaji,
The 18 duets you have added present a fascinating side of Madan Mohan’s music. It appears to me that besides the romantic, soulful ghazal style for which he became famous, he also had a natural lighter side, and he revelled in composing these funny, breezy and comic duets in which the female voice was Asha Bhosle. One could mistake it for OP Nayyar influence, because he was the leading light of this style, but it was perhaps more because there was indeed an ‘other’ Madan Mohan within him.
Mujhi mein chhup kar mujhi se door (#4) seems to have been composed keeping Lata Mangeshkar in mind for the female voice. Conversely, in Tere mukhade ka til kala kala (#8) Lata Mangeshkar seems to be consciously imitating Asha Bhosle’s style.
The only ‘telephone song’ we can instantly recall is Jalte hain jiske liye; we can also stretch it to include Mere piya gaye Rangoon. Therefore, it was nice to come across a proper telephone song, Hello, hello, hello (#7). Can someone site more telephone songs?
Canasya,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Le gaya dil dekho dil bhi hamara is another song from the ‘other’ Madan Mohan. Most of such songs went into oblivion, but some achieved great fame as we should hopefully see in the concluding post in the series on ‘other’ singers. That would mean double ‘other’. 🙂
Canasya ji @36. ;
The song from Samunder heard for the first time , its amazing ! The interludes are very much like those in Dekh Kabira Roya song……Hum Panchhi Mastane ….they add to rhythm and melody .
AK ji;
Here is one song that adds to ….other catagory .
Yeh duniya toofan mail [parody]…..Rafi, Shyam Kumar.. Chacha chowdhry…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7injD4xcMs
Venkatraman ji ;
Welcome back to SoY . We were missing your expert contributions to whatever came before us . There has been very interesting topics that we all were enjoying. Take your time to go thru them and we know we will get more rich with your inputs.
To welcome you here are some songs ….both melodies and funnies too……
Jis raat jale na parwana….Asha, Rafi …..Sanjog
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tErsGfDBvU
Hasna gana mauj manana….Asha, Rafi…Chacha Chowdhry’……this song reflects some other song that is based on this melody …..perhaps mixture of SJ and OPN tune.

Now a very silent duet of Rafi and Lata ji from Heer Ranjha.
Meri duniya mein tum aaye………

Anup,
Meri hirni jaisi chaal – who would have thought it is Madan Mohan’s composition? It seems he has too many songs of Punjabi tadka, not as well known as his melodious ghazals.
KS Bhatiaji @42,
Ye duniya Toofan Mail which segues into Ye duniya paglon ka baazar is a great fun song.
@43,
Jis raat jale na parwana – Such a fabulous Qawwali muqabala between Mehmood and lady Mehmood! 🙂 I had included it in my post on Qawwalis of Roshan and Madan Mohan!
AK
Rafi’s duets composed by Madan Mohan seems to be very popular post among the SoY readers as they have come out statements and also their own fantastic numbers. These are very handy for all who crave for the old gold. I like them all as Madan Mohan was a composer who relished in creating an apt “Ras-Nishpatti” from the lyrical words of the master lyricists.
This tandem is well balanced and blanched in a range of colours, peddling on its own speed!
Shalan Lal
Shalan Lal,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation.
Good that yeh to kaho from AKELI MAT JAIYO was recognised and included. It was a unique song !
AK ji , KB ji ;
Both the songs of Akeli mat jaiyo and Aashiq with same mukhda …yeh to kaho…..are fabolous and unique as well . For Akeli mat jaiyo…..yes my darling by Rafi sahib.
For aashiq I have two observations to make . One ….beautiful rhythm and beats dominated by Dholak ….and second ……filling of pause after…..yeh to kaho ….by piano accordion short interlude. Shankar Jaikishan had earlier made pause filler by accordion in Awara song…….Aawara hoon …. an experiment that remained a milestone and an example for enhancing the melody as well.
A great post and wonderful inputs from the learned members of the group . Of the many thoughts that come to mind , one is that Madan Mohanji had a great sense of which singer would suit which song .
For instance in the film pocket maar (1956) , the duet song – ladi aankh se aankh is assigned to Rafi
https://youtu.be/GdbfpemyCNg
Whereas the other favourite duet in this film , ye nai nai preet hai is assigned to Talat.

I can never imagine Rafi for this duet.
S Joseph,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Madan Mohan had the capability to use a variety of singers. That helped him choose the singer most suitable for a particular song.
With my known soft(er) corner for Rafi, I have always wondered whether to relate it to his professional approach or his generous nature, how he has traveled a yard more with those music directors who were generally acknowledged to have done special work with some other singer .
In this aspect MM-Rafi relationship comes out as the most typical example.
The fact remains that Rafi has some of his greatest songs with these music directors, the songs which stood a t par with that music director’s songs with his / her (so-called) more preferred singer.
For me, MM-Rafi songs are always gems to relish.
So, the present post and the rich flow of comments add great joy to me for Rafi getting a highly due credit for his songs with music directors for whom he was, perhaps, not the choice from the deep.
I would, quite obviously, look forward to more of such studies on Rafi @SoY.
As regards the song from SHARABI it was the other duet JAO JI JAO with the same singers that was more popular. The song from JAILOR also with the same singers and the MOHAR duet of Lata Rafi were equally popular dueing those days. However an excellent effort for this compilation !
Kindly get us the duets of Madan mohan with other singers like Mukesh and Talat.
Ashokji,
I am happy you liked the post. Rafi was Madan Mohan’s principal male singer. I have already done a post on the solos of this combination on the 31st July. Rafi being by far the most dominant male singer, it is inevitable that he has been extensively covered on SoY with different music directors.
KB,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Noted your request for ‘other’ singers.
Thank you Bhatiaji,
Yes, it could be possible that Madanji had already composed Likh kar tera naam zameen par before he passed away, but since it was recorded by Jaidevji, it is on record that it is his song. As I mentioned the Producers were very unfair not to have given full credit to Madanji for the film, since 90% of the songs are his. I hold it against them. .
And yes, Tiki riki tiki riki….it is such a fun song, I just forgot about it.
Thanks AKji for enjoying the songs…You will not believe how many fun songs are there in Madanji’s repertoire..I remember the days when Rajinder Krishanji used to write them and he composed them in the fun sittings they had. full of frolic. He was a very childlike person …not the serious kind at all..It is just that his sad gazals became popular that he got known only for them, whilst his other songs took the back seat.
On Rafi Saab’s Birth Anniversary, let me touch upon three male duets. If already posted, please pardon.
FIFTY FIFTY,1956.

Bhatiaji,
I missed your comment @43. Sorry for that. Will try to catch up with earlier posts.
Bhatiaji, your welcome songs are fine melodies and the first two are amusing too. AKji has mentioned about Madan Mohan’s “funny, breezy and comic duets”. You and Sangeetaji have posted some of the songs.
Hasna gana mauj manana is a lively dance song. Even in this song you can find Madan Mohan’s innovativeness. The comical effect to this song was provided in the three interludes. In the three interludes of this song he did not use any instrument; instead he presents carnatic style aakaar tans and sargams through the lips of Dhumal. I could not recognize the voice. If you have seen the film you will remember that Dhumal plays the role of a South Indian music teacher to Durga Khote and Raja Paranjpe (I think that is the name of the actor) plays the role of a dance teacher to Shasikala.
Here is another such song, again with Asha Bhosle. The film is Minister (1959). Sangeetaji has posted three duets from this film. This song is picturised on Bhagwan, Tuntun and Reshma. Tuntun dons the role of Bhagwan’s Tamil wife.

Another duet with Asha Bhosle.
