A keen reader S. Joseph often suggests some themes to write on. He once wrote to me that there were many songs of a man praising the beauty of a woman, and also, somewhat less, of a woman praising a man, and it might be a nice theme for the blog. I felt diffident precisely for this reason – that this was too common and almost all the bloggers I follow have written on this. But I now realise, after ‘Songs of narcissists’ some balancing has become necessary lest you should get the impression that the world is full of people obsessed with themselves.
I wrote in my last post that we are all narcissists to some degree. But we are also a social animal. We feel good giving and receiving compliments. Even if not genuine at times, we know enough of social courtesies. If your friend invites you to celebrate his child securing the first position in the school in the Board examinations, you don’t spoil the party by saying, “Big deal! My child stood first in the whole state.” If everyone was like this, society would break apart.
For someone in love the stars never looked brighter, sky never so blue and flowers never smiled so bright. The heart flutters and floats in a dream world. In this state, the partner looks the nicest and the most beautiful person in the world. Praising the beauty of the partner comes automatically.
1. Chaudahvin ka chaand ho ya aaftab ho, jo bhi ho tum Khuda ki qasam laajwab ho by Rafi from Chaudahvi Ka Chaand (1960), lyrics Shakeel Badayuni, music Ravi
The leading song of praising the beauty of a woman is Chaudahvin ka chaand ho ya aaftab ho, jo bhi ho tum Khuda ki qasam laajwab ho, fetching Rafi the Filmfare Award for the Best Male Playback Singer. Each line is a love ode to her different parts:
Your tresses are like clouds resting on your shoulders
Your eyes are like a glass filled with wine
Your face is like a fully-blossomed lotus in a lake
Or a melody played on the harp of life
My love you are like a poet’s dream
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRbBORKhGYg
2. Ye chaand sa roshan chehra, zulfon ka rang sunehra, ye jheel si neeli aankhen, koi raaz hai inmein gehra, tareef karun kya uski jisne tumhein banaya by Rafi from Kashmir Ki Kali (1964), lyrics SH Bihari, music OP Nayyar
Shammi Kapoor was the exact opposite of Guru Dutt. And Rafi was different when he became the voice of Shammi Kapoor. There is praise of the moonlike face, the tresses, blue eyes like a lake, but Shammi Kapoor is physical, vigorous, jumpy in frenzied Tareef karun kya uski. At the crescendo he becomes oblivious that he is in a shikara, and falls down in the lake fully suited and booted.
3. O haseena zulfonwali by Rafi and Asha Bhosle from Teesri Manzil (1966), lyrics Majrooh Sultanpuri, music RD Burman
Shammi Kapoor addresses Asha Parekh who seems to be under some stress as she has come with the purpose of avenging her sister’s death. But a very prominent zulfonwali in this song is one of the dancers you must have seen in many films in dance songs. We normally don’t know the names of the extras. But she has been given pride of place by an American Bollywood fan who has resuscitated several such artistes in her blog Memsaabstory. Now we all know that her name is Edwina Lyons and if you google you would find a lot of material on her.
4. Husnwaale tera jawab nahin, koi tujhsa nahin hazaaron mein by Rafi from Gharana (1961), lyrics Shakeel Badyuni, music Ravi
You cannot imagine Rajendra Kumar without Rafi. His songs made him the Jubilee Kumar. As Asha Parekh hums Jab se tumhein dekha hai aankhon mein tumhin tum ho while painting his portrait, the image comes to life and starts singing her praises that she is one in thousands.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JiyiKeykYw
5. Ye jhuke jhuke naina ye lat balkhati to dil kyun na mera deewana ho tera by Rafi from Bharosa (1963), lyrics Rajendra Krishna, music Ravi
But my real favourite of the combo Rafi-Ravi is this song, picturised on Guru Dutt in a fast tune.
6. Khoobsurat haseena jaan-e-jaan jaan-e-man by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar from Mr X in Bombay (1964), lyrics Anand Bakshi, music Laxmikant-Pyarelal
Kishore Kumar and Kumkum float in their magical car, praising their partners with some teasing – Tu nahin, tu nahin, wo haseen to sanam koi aur hi hai.
7. Chandan sa badan chanchal chitwan by Mukesh from Saraswatichandra (1968), lyrics Indivar, music Kalyanji-Anandji
One of Mukesh’s best and a song of pure praise of the woman.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_ZFtaonBPQ
8. Tere labon ke muqabil gulab kya hoga, tu laajwab hai tera jawab kya hoga by Mukesh (Non-film song), lyrics Shivkumar Saroj, music Kishor Desai
Mukesh had his fair share of songs in praise of a woman’s beauty. Sincere praise has to be in a soft melodious tone. Mukesh is perfect in this NFS.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwCB8r3eaQQ
9. Ankhon mein masti sharab ki, kaali zulfon mein raatein shabab ki by Talat Mahmood from Chhaya (1961), lyrics Rajendra Krishna, music Salil Chowdhury
Talat Mahmood was not always in a blue mood, he has also sung some songs of praising the beauty of a woman.
10. Ae meri zohra-jabeen tujhe maloom nahin, tu abhi tak hai haseen aur main jawan, tujh par qurbaan meri jaan meri jaan by Manna Dey from Waqt (1965), lyrics Sahir Ludhiyanavi,
Balraj Sahni is simply brilliant in this flirtatious song as a married man in middle ages, praising the beauty of his shy wife. Manna Dey has sung a timeless song.
11. Ghayal karte hain khud hi…Tore naina raseele, kateele haye Ram by Manna Dey from Hamdard (1953), lyrics Prem Dhavan, music Anil Biswas
This is another masterpiece by Manna Dey, composed by the maestro Anil Biswas. Each line oozes with praise of the beauty of the eyes of a woman, mixed with naughtiness.
Ghayal karte hain khud hi aur khud hi bante hain dawa
Hain zahar kabhi, amrit hain kabhi, na jaane tore naina hain kya
Tore naina raseele kateele haye Ram
Badal gaya rang mehfil ka jab tum mehfil mein aye
Rang uda hai phoolon ka, dil shama ka baitha jaye
In nazron ke aage koi kaise nazar uthaye
Tore naina…
Jhoom rahin hai nagin zulfein mukh par halke halke
Sar se aanchal dhalka jaye baitho zara sambhal ke
Na jaane kya kar baithe dil mera aaj machal ke
Tore naina…
12. Ye nayan darey darey ye jaam bharey bharey by Hemant Kumar from Kohra (1964), lyrics Kaifi Azmi, music Hemant Kumar
This list would be incomplete without a song from the most sonorous voice among the great playback singers. Then his iconic song Ye nayan darey, ye jam bharey hit me; it is of course a song praising the beauty of a woman:
These bashful eyes are like a cup of nectar filled to the brim
Let me drink it a little
Who has seen tomorrow
Let me live this night without any care
These bashful eyes…
This night is beautiful, so is this moon beautiful
But my darling, you are the most beautiful of all
And even more beautiful than you is your love
You may not know that
These bashful eyes…

What a fabulous song list, AK. Each song is better than the last. Here’s one from later years that was quite a hit: Yeh reshmi zulfein yeh sharbati aankhen:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9aMSJGAkeY
But this is one I like a lot more. It doesn’t say much about her beauty, but it implies a lot because it talks of the effect she has on him. And on the world, on God himself. Is rang badalti duniya mein:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcFVSXL93u8
Madhu,
Thanks a lot. Rafi seems to be the master of such songs. Is rang badalti duniya mein: But don’t you think the effect on Shammi Kapoor seems to be overtly erotic. I remembered many songs of Rafi which are quite innocuous and dircet. One is Ae husnpari chehra from Aman.
AK ji
One has to use one of the songs in the list to describe the post
Tera jawab nahi
As you have said it is a common place subject and there are many blogs written on the theme but you have still made it interesting with the choice of songs and more importantly with the accompanying write up.
Usually ” husn ki tarif “is replete with appreciation of aankh, zulf and chehra.
But here is very intense yet subtle appreciation
Teri har chap se
Jalte hai khayalo me chirag
Jab bhi tu aaye
Jagata hua Jadu aaye
Tujhko choo lu to
Aye jan-e-tamanna
Mujhko der tak
Apne badan se
Teri khushboo aaye
Tu baharo ka hai
Unwaan tujhe chahunga
Mai to mar kar bhi
Meri jaan tujhe chahunga
Jindagi me to – quateel shifai- Mehedi Hassan
https://youtu.be/Ag8JpA02WjY
A beautiful collection of songs of which I am not familiar with only 2 . The write up is uncharacteristically brief so I am sure the noble readers would come up with a lot .
When you are in love , the angry also look more beautiful . So I feel this song may fit in this theme. The video clip has been blocked on YouTube. I learn this movie is the debut performance of Sonik Omi as MD .
Lo chehra surkh…/ 1966 / DIL NE PHIR YAAD KIYA / GS Rawal / Sonik Omi / Rafi
https://youtu.be/AG5YPUW5NK8
Another ‘ Kashmir ki kali ‘ song shot in a different setting that could fit in here . When there is not one but more songs on the beauty of the lead lady in the movie , it means she is extraordinary. Both songs are in Rafi’s voice . This recording should be before OPN-Rafi split and when a great team splits then everyone is a loser .
‘Subhanallah haseen chehara…/ 1964 / KASHMIR KI KALI / SH Bihari / OPN / Rafi
https://youtu.be/m9yd7MhDqCQ
Mr Muli @3,
Thanks a lot. Mehdi Hassan is wonderful in this song. Thanks a lot for sharing. It is perhaps more about the intensity of love.
Mr S Joseph @4, 5,
Since you have posted Subhan Allah haseen chehra from Kashmir Ki Kali, you must have heard Ye chaand sa roshan chehra from the film. This song too is too good. Lo chehra surkh is a very nice song. Rafi’s songs are pouring now.
How Sunil Dutt has fallen for the eyes.
‘ Naino wali tere…’ / 1964 / BETI BETE / Shailendra / SJ / Rafi
https://youtu.be/1njKnwyweNo
This composition should date before Anandji paired with Kalyanji to form the famous dou.
Her eyes are the main attraction in this song .
‘ Naina hain jadoo…’/ 1959 / BEDARD ZAMANA KYA JAANE / Bharat Vyas / Kalyanji Virji Shah / Mukesh
https://youtu.be/hDSkUS2W-ms
The magic of the eyes.
‘ Bhool sakta hai…’/ 1961 / DHARAMPUTRA / Sahir Ludhyanvi/ NDatta / Mahendra Kapoor
https://youtu.be/ZaORSbjzRms
Again it is the eyes that has mesmerised the hero . Deer’s eyes. A nice composition.
‘ Kaun ho tum…’/ 1961 / STREE / Bharat Vyas / CR / Mahendra Kapoor
https://youtu.be/saDAJD-9kmM
Mr S Joseph @8, 9, 10, 11,
What a recall of songs praising the beauty of eyes!
AK ji
I agree that it is more about intensity of love but in the process of expressing it there is subtle non physical appreciation.
If one wants appreciation from the first line to the last this will be hard to beat
Ek ladki ko dekha to – 1942 a love story- Javed Akhtar- RDB- Kumar Shanu
https://youtu.be/fTauOK8J-U8
27th June is RDB’s birth anniversary
Your list contains a song from his first hit and this is from his last hit.
AKji,
A nice sequel to your previous post and a necessary balancing act too.
“Praising the beauty of the partner comes automatically.”
Ah, that is my cup of tea too. Feels like I am in my home turf.
Chandan sa badan chanchal chitwan & Ghayal karte hain khud hi…Tore naina raseele, kateele haye Ram were my favourites.
Thanks AKji the dozen marvelous songs.
In the 1930s, one may find lyrics like ‘Anandadaayini Roopmati Hriday Harini Tu’.
But the song ‘Mere sapno ki rani ruhi ruhi’ from Shahjehan (1946) could be a good vintage representation.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWyvTUr5kv4&t=122s
One more from Mahendra Kapoor.
‘Aap ke paas…’/ 1965 / KAJAL / Sahir Ludhyanvi / Ravi / Mahendra Kapoor
https://youtu.be/x7PqKnXlonc
AKJi,
Josephji suggested and you responded at the opportune moment. Thanks to both of you.
Josephji has an eye (or the ear) for the magic of eyes.
That reminds me of another vintage super number
Main kya jaanun kya jaadu hai
In do matawaale nainon men jaadu hai
Ek ek athaah saagar sa hai
In do matawaale nainon men jaadu hai
K L Saigal, Zindagi (1940), lyrics Kedar Sharma, music Pankaj Mullick
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgiKuSLwVjA&t=19s
The song writer has a significant role in such songs.
The previous song ‘Mere sapno ki rani ruhi ruhi’ was by Majrooh Sultanpuri
Roshan and Rafi .
‘ Ab kya misal …’/ 1962 / AARTI / Majrooh Sultanpuri / Roshan /Rafi
https://youtu.be/ad5BcGFpxog
‘ Surahidar gardan koyal…’/ AMAN /1967 / Hasrat Jaipuri/ SJ / Rafi
https://youtu.be/UGDF2udvPZI
‘ Kamar patli nazar…/ 1968 / KAHIN DIN KAHIN RAAT / SH Bihari / OPN / Mahendra Kapoor
https://youtu.be/_e7pyGjgFJk
A very popular Ravi – Rafi song .May qualify .
‘Baar baar dekho…’/ 1962 / CHINA TOWN / Majrooh Sultanpuri/ Ravi / Rafi
https://youtu.be/t7tTei9K0WY
Mr Muli @13,
Ek ladki ko dekha is, of course, full of praise of the woman from beginning to end. Nice connection with RDB’s birth anniversary and his song in the post. Thanks a lot.
Venkataramanji @14,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation.
“Ah, that is my cup of tea too. Feels like I am in my home turf“: The whole world loves a lover. No wonder you have so many admirers. I am happy that my post touched a perennial romantic.
There was one much later, “Priye praneshawari, hridayeshwari, yadi aap humein aadesh karein to prem ka hum shri ganesh karein“. Profound words, but this was in a comic setting.
@16,
Everything has a time. My mailbox is full of suggestions from the readers, some who do not comment, but are keen followers. Mr Joseph must have written to me long ago. I am happy that it saw the light of the day finally.
Main kya jaanu kya jaadu hai fits perfectly. Another one more directly is Do naina matware tihare hum par zulum karein.
Mr S Joseph @15,
Aap ke paas jo ayega: It is my great favourite.
@17, 18, 19, 20,
Now you are in full flow. We have to thin, but you seem to have on the tap, just turn it and the songs pour. Ab kya misaal dun is my great favourite. One of the best of Rafi.
Was this OPN tonga song the turning point in Shammi’s career ?
One more to Rafi
‘ Yun toh hamne …/ 1957 / TUM SA NAHIN DEKHA / Sahir Ludhyanvi / OPN / Rafi
https://youtu.be/Ezpvc3lNLK0
Perhaps the first Hemant song under this post ?
‘ Tumhe jo bhi… ‘/ 1964 / MAJBOOR / Indeevar / Kalyanji Anandji / Hemant
https://youtu.be/FS9bjW6StU4
Mr Joseph @24,
Tum Sa Nahin Dekha was surely the film that was a turning point in his career. Before this film, he acted in films in which he was a mustachioed lanky fellow in serious roles.
@25,
Hemant Kumar: Please see song no. 12.
AKji,
Very nice list of songs.
Would these qualify?
Roshan tumhi se duniya from Parasmani
Ek ladki ko dekha to from 1942 a love story
Anup
🙂
Anup,
Thanks a lot. Roshan tumhin se duniya would obviously qualify. There is no doubt about Ek ladki ko dekha to aisa laga; Mr Muli has mentioned it earlier at @13.
AK ji
Joseph ji is firing on all cylinders with memorable songs. He has posted Aap ke paas from Kajal. I think there also was a more popular song in Kajal extolling the beauty in a different way
Chu lene do – Sahir- Ravi- Rafi
https://youtu.be/htLbxQsG_8I
The jam as inaam fits well with Jani’ s image at that time.
Mr Muli,
I think the reason is it was Mr Joseph’s theme. Aap ke paas, besides being a very nice song, also has the advantage of being less heard.
Here one song from film SASURAL
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiWqgA5srHM&t=8s
NFS by Jagmohan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKm43sOxQr0
May I add Anand Bakshi’s lovely composition “Zikr Hota Hai Jab Qayamat Ka Tere Jalwo.n Ki Baat Hoti Hai” tuned by lesser known Daan Singh for My Love (1970) … on Shashi Kapoor wooing Sharmila Tagore; particularly telling lines being:
तुझको देखा है मेरी नज़रों ने तेरी तारीफ़ हो मगर कैसे
के बने ये नज़र ज़ुबाँ कैसे के बने ये ज़ुबाँ नज़र कैसे
ना ज़ुबाँ को दिखाई देता है ना निग़ाहों से बात होती है
ज़िक्र होता है जब क़यामत का तेरे जलवों की बात होती है
It is on YouTube https://youtu.be/ayHOKdRgsuI
One more from Rafi.
‘ Sau baar banakar…’/ 1968 / EK RAAT / Yogesh / Usha Khanna / Rafi
https://youtu.be/wSYefTw66sw
Video quality poor. Rafi again.
‘ Hai kali kali…’/ 1958 / LALA RUKH / Kaifi Azmi / Khayyam / Rafi
https://youtu.be/vhXLl5RRYVA
‘Shyamal shyamal baran …’/ 1959 / NAVRANG / Bharat Vyas / CR / Mahendra Kapoor
https://youtu.be/9P3oBlZN728i
Here’s an addition to the lovely list of songs compiled by AK, Josephji and others:
‘Ae jaan-e-chaman, tera gora badan’ by Mahendra Kapoor, from ‘Anmol Moti’ (1969). MD – Ravi, Lyricist – Rajendra Krishan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAzYOSsFHCI
Good topic and there are hundreds of songs depicting the beauty of women.
To taste a bowl of kheer a spoon is enough so I just add one song
to the growing list.
jane ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, wallah ka kamal hai.
A Rafi number a Shammi Kapoor-Saroja Devi starrer.
I am not sure this pick of mine is fits into the topic.
Manoj @31, 32,
Your two songs in tandem are very interesting. Pyari tum kitni sundar ho and Teri pyari pyari surat ko have similar wordings and theme. But Jagmohan’s sounds very elegant.
Shekhar @33,
के बने ज़ुबां कैसे, के बने ये ज़ुबां नज़र कैसे: This is beautiful wordplay and imagery. Thanks a lot.
AK,
Would this song qualify? The hero is not exactly praising the heroine’s beauty but he finds her cute in all respects.
‘Tum kamsin ho, naadaan ho’ by Rafi, from ‘Aayee Milan ki Bela’ (1964). MD – S-J, Lyricist – Hasrat Jaipuri
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-hTvBEAOpk
Mr Joseph @34,
Sau baar banakar maalik ne sau baar mitaya hoga. After so many iterations the final product has to be very good.
@35,
Hai kali kali ke lab par is such a superb song that video quality does not matter.
@36,
Shyamal shyamal baran: Mahendra Kapoor does a superb song. In these songs Mahipal in his imagination created a beauty. Sandhya came to know that he lives in a fantasy world. But all is well that ends well.
Ashwin @37,
Mahendra Kapoor was underrated but he sang some superb songs. Ae jaan-e-chaman, tera gora badan is one of them. Thanks for adding it.
Mr Vasudevan @38,
This surely fits. Thanks a lot.
Many Qawwalis praise the beauty of women in unique ways so these may fit in here .
‘Hamein toh loot…’/ 1958 / AL HILAL / Shevan Rizvi / Bulo C Rani / Ismail Azaad +
https://youtu.be/YUr0zsqtNPY
‘ Chaandi ka badan…’/ 1963 / TAJ MAHAL / Sahir Ludhyanvi / Roshan / Rafi, Asha , Manna Dey , Meena Kapoor
https://youtu.be/ZEyP23t4yjA
AK ji , Joseph ji
Rafi seems to be way ahead of others when it comes to singing songs appreciating
” husn”
Here is a hat-trick of Rafi songs
Ye teri saadgi – Shabnam- Javed Anwar – Usha Khanna
https://youtu.be/DumjTa1BKJk
Husn se chaand bhi –
https://youtu.be/FrssAgQufYc
Jo baat tujhme hai – Tajmahal – Sahir – Roshan
https://youtu.be/K-LpErDQEps
Regarding “Jo baat” a slight diversion
Geet ramayan was a hugely popular song- serial written by GD Madgulkar and composed by Sudhir Phadke. It narrated the Ramayana through 52 episodes which were aired by AIR.
In geet Ramayana near the end there is a song describing the first meeting of Shri Ram and his twin sons Lav and Kush.
In the song Gadima uses the phrase
Pratyaksha hun pratima Sundar
meaning Image is better than reality.
While Sahir in his song says
Jo baat tujhme hai teri tasveer me nahi.
‘ Mai nigahen tere …’/ 1964 / AAP KI PARCHHAIYAN / Raja Mehdi Ali Khan / MM / Rafi
https://youtu.be/bHF3sA6B_sA
Ashwin @41,
Tum kamsin ho naadan ho: I am confused, Saira Bano was not kamsin, nor did she look kamsin. She was above the legal age to allay the fears of the man that he would be safe from any legal complications. Why then the dithering, Sochta hun ki main tumhein pyar na karun?
Rajendra Kumar emphasises more on her immature age, gullibility, frivolity. You have to help me.
Mr Joseph @45, 46,
Yes, these qawwalis sing the praises of a woman’s beauty. There must be equal number muqabalas where each side roasts the other side.
Mr Muli @47,
It is very interesting to connect Jo baat tujhmein hai teri tasveer mein nahin and ‘Geet Ramayan’. But the mother song on this theme is Talat Mahmood’s NFS Tasveer teri dil mera bahla na sakegi.
https://youtu.be/D5P2iJh-Lqk
Mr S Joseph @48,
When I think of MM-Rafi songs, Main nigaahein tere chehre se hataaun kaise is among the top three songs.
A duet where the hero is appreciating her beauty.
This should count for Rafi .
‘ Masoom chehra ye…’/ 1962 / DIL TERA DEEWANA / Hasrat Jaipuri / SJ / Rafi , Lata
https://youtu.be/LUhfiIo_a7E
Good collection of songs. I only wish to add two songs Naina hai jadoo bhare from Bedard Zamana Kya Jane and the Roshan song from Warrant (1961) Nainon mein kyun aan base and can this song Ye Purnur Chhehera ai dilkash ada from Mohabbat Zindagi Hai (1966) be also considered?
Dear AK JI,
Amazing the way in which you come up so many topics!! Great…
A topic that can generate thousands of songs as this could be one of the most popular theme of HFM in the golden era. One song which comes to my mind immediately:
1)Tere husn ki kya tareef karoon from Leader-Rafi & Lata-Naushad-Shakeel.
2) Tu bemisaal hai teri tareef kya karoon from Bramhachari-Rafi-Shankar Jaikishan-Hasrat Jaipuri…a typical SJ-Rafi that has Rafi ooooozing with romance
Also one small correction if I may-Song # 4-The lyrics go like this-
Husnewale Tera jawab nahin..koi tujhsa nahin hazaron mein
(Gustakhi maaf!!)
Regds
Siva
AKji,
Listening to the songs posted by you in leisure was a genuine pleasure. Except one, all songs are often heard. Since Rafi was the preferred voice for many such songs, the inclusion of 5 of his popular numbers in this genre is expected and reiterated by more from our friends in the comments section.
“Sincere praise has to be in a soft melodious voice”.
Very true.
‘Chaudahvin ka chaand ho ya aaftab ho, jo bhi ho tum Khuda ki qasam laajwab ho’, ‘Husnwaale tera koi jawab nahin, nahin tujhsa koi hazaaron mein’ belong to this type.’ Ye jhuke jhuke naina ye lat balkhati to dil kyun na mera deewana ho tera’, a fast tune, a good one and not brash.
Posting a song by Rafi, arguably the best song on eyes, certainly one of the best.
Teri Aankhon Ke Sivaa Duniyaa Mein Rakkhaa Kyaa Hai
Ye Uthen Subah Chale, Ye Jhuken Shaam Dhale
Meraa Jinaa Meraa Maranaa Inhin Palakon Ke Tale
Md.Rafi, Chirag (1969), lyrics Majrooh Sultanpuri, music Madan Mohan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD6pJW-CX0E
AKji,
Your observation “Sincere praise has to be in a soft melodious voice” was in the context of the song
“Tere labon ke muqabil gulab kya hoga, tu laajwab hai tera jawab kya hoga”. Satin soft expressions convey profound and desired effect or effective desire. This NFS by Mukesh was new to me. Thanks for its inclusion.
Posting another song, of Mukesh
Chand aahen bharega
Phool dil thaam lenge
Husn ki baat chali to
Sab tera naam lenge
Mukesh, Phool Bane Angare (1963), Anand Bakshi, Kalyanji Anandji
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kpKvrqBnZs
AKji,
Indeed both the songs of Manna Dey,’ Ghayal karte hain khud hi…Tore naina raseele, kateele haye Ram’ and ‘Ae meri zohra-jabeen tujhe maloom nahin, tu abhi tak hai haseen aur main jawan’ are masterpieces.
If Balraj Sahni is simply brilliant in his flirtatious song as a married man in middle ages, Omprakash and Chaya Devi fares no less as doting elderly couples in the following duet of the 80s with a vintage flavour. And the reaction of the young lovers in this song is no less appealing.
O Mriganayani Chandramukhi, mai hun teraa prem divaanaa, Kumari Fayyaz & Vasantrao Deshpande, Rang Birangi (1983), lyrics ?, music R D Burman
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eHyzXb94Fk
Mr S Joseph @53,
Masoom chehra ye qatil adayein: What a beautiful, soft, romantic duet. The only jarring thing is both Shammi Kapoor and Mala Sinha seem to be overacting.
KB @54,
Thank you. Naina hain jaadu bhare is a beautiful song, and obviously fits. Nainon mein kyun aan base and Ye purnur chehra I heard for the first time. Both fit the theme. In the second set Mehmood tries to copy Shammi Kapoor.
Mr Sivanandam @55,
Thanks. Please read my write up and watch the song again. As Asha Paresh paints the portrait of Rajendra Kumar, she hums the tune of Jab se tumhein dekha hai. Thereafter, live Rajendra Kumar comes out of the portrait and starts singing Husnwale tera jawab nahin.
Venkataramanji @56,
I am gratified that you listened to the songs again. Manna Dey’s song from Hamdard has become my great favourite, thanks to you.
Teri aankhon ke siwa is indeed a very good song.
@57,
Thanks for adding Chaand aahein bharega.
@58,
O mrignayani, chandramukhi is a beautiful song, my great favourite. Wikipedia mentions Yogesh as the lyricist of the song.
AK ji
here is a pair of songs by Kishor Kumar
O meri , o meri , o meri sharmilee
In which Neeraj writes for the father
Tera kajal lekar raat jagi
Teri mehendi lekar din uga
Teri boli sunkar Sur jage
Teri khushboo lekar phool khila
Sharmilee
https://youtu.be/akOSLVdy-XM
While in the second Majrooh writes for the son
Aankho me kajal aur lato me Kali ghata ka
Savera
Saawali Surat mohani moorat
Saawan rut ka savera
Raat Kali ek khwab me – Budha mil gaya
https://youtu.be/qgsbn8IoUqc
Mr Muli @63,
Nice connection between O meri sharmilee and Raat kali ek khwab mein ayi.
Dear AK Ji
Sorry-maybe I didnt convey properly.
The song is absolutely right one and apt for the post and is picturized the way you mentioned. I just found the way it is typed in the post, the words were jumbled up…
4. Husnwaale tera koi jawab nahin, nahin tujhsa koi hazaaron mein by Rafi from Gharana (1961), lyrics Shakeel Badyuni, music Ravi
whereas it should be:
Husnwaale tera jawab nahin, koi tujhsa nahin hazaaron mein
No ‘Koi’ between tera and jawab and it is Koi tujhsa nahin hazaron mein…
It just sounded a bit odd to read and that’s why I mentioned.Forget it -my intention was not to nitpick….as it is one of my very fav song, couldnt resist !!
Continuing on the theme, you had mentioned in your introduction
“and also, somewhat less, of a woman praising a man”
These would be comparatively less in number but …
How about these songs–I could immediately think of two
1) Ujala-Hasrat-Shankar-Jaikishan & Lata
Tera jalwa jisne dekha woh tera ho gaya,
Mein ho gayee kisiki koi mera ho gaya
2) Tumhare Liye-Naqsh Lyallpuri-Jaidev-Lata
Tumhe dekhti hoon, to lagta hai aise
Ke jaise yugon se tumhe jaanti hoon
The second antara is even more clear in describing her lover:
Tumhe chooke pal mein bane dhool chandan
Tumhari mehak se mehakne lage tan
Mere paas aao , gale se lagaao
Piya aur tumse mein kya chaahti hoon

Private song Of Manna De – Nazaron Mein Ho Tum…..
Is it ok here?
Mr Sivanandam @65,
Now I get it. You are right. I have since corrected it. So I have to apologise. The readers freely correct any mistakes.
@66,
I was just thinking of reciprocal songs. Tera jalwa jisne dekha also came to my mind. There would be of course a good number of songs, but not as prolific as men praising the beauty of a woman.
Manoj @67,
Nazar mein tum nazaaron mein tum is an excellent song and fits here perfectly.

I am not sure if anyone had mentioned this one-a classic from Mukesh-Shankar-Jaikishan-Hasrat team : Film-Ek Dil Aur Sau Afsaane
When it comes to romance, Hasrat goes all out. i am giving the full lyrics here-highlights of his imagination are:
Aayina tumko dekh ke hairaan ho gaya!!
Makhmal pe tum chalo to chhile paaon gulbadan
Nazren agar uthen to qayamat machal uthe!!
Kitni bhi tareef karoon , rukthee nahin zubaan

Mr S Joseph @70,
Tamtam se jhaanko na raniji. This must be a unique song in which a woman (street dancer) sings the praises of the beauty of a woman.
@71,
Teri soorat se nahin milti kisi ki soorat
Hum jahan mein teri tasveer liye phirte hain:
This is a familiar couplet of an Urdu poet. Rekhta.org mentions Imam Bakhsh Nasikh as the poet. It is interesting how our lyricists took a well-known sher and by adding the next few lines, they gave their name as the lyricist.
@72,
Yahi hai tamanna tere ghar ke saamne ek ghar baasunga: His desire to have his abode across the lady’s house implies praise of her beauty.
@73,
Kabhi ithla ke chalte ho, kabhi bal kha ke chalte ho: Heard for the first time. Nice song. Thanks a lot.
@74,
Tu mere saamne hai: Very good song.
@75,
Gori chalo na hans ki chaal: Excellent song. Rafi had some kind of monopoly of such songs.
@76
Thumak thumak mat chalo, haanji mat chalo kisi ka dil tadpega: What a beautiful song. Kalyanji-Anandji were absolutely top class with Mukesh, no matter it was picturised on Mahmood. ‘Kahin Pyar Na Ho Jaaye‘ must be a B-grade movie.
@77,
Ya allah ya allah dil le gayi: What a picturisation. Shammi-Kapoor and Mala Sinha both are superb. This song is a duet, and Mala Sinha also praises the hero.
@78,
Teri nigaahon pe mar mar gaye hum: Mukesh also sang some terrific songs of praising the beauty of a woman. @76 too was Mukesh for Mahmood. Great songs.
@84,
Zara nazron se kah do ji: Praise in a round about way, Qaatil tumhein pukaarun ki jaan-e-wafa kahun/ Hairat mein pad gaya hun ki main tumko kya kahun. Nice way to convey indirectly.
Dr Deshpande @79,
Thanks a lot. You are right, there are countless songs on this theme. and readers are well on their way to discover all.
Maine poochha chaand se ki dekha hai kahin: Beautiful song by Rafi.
@80,
Sone ke gahne kyon tune pahne: Because her काया तेरी खुद कंचन है. Nice imagery.
@81,
Tum kitni khubsoorat ho: Heard for the first time. Nice song.
@82,
Chehra hai ya chaand khila: Very poetic expression.
@86,
Phool sa chehra chaand si rangat chaal qayamat kya kahiye: Wah, even in a serious film, SJ were able to compose an excellent Rafi song for praising a woman’s beauty.
Ashokji @83,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation.
Mr Sivanandam @85,
You are a great romantic. Thanks for taking the trouble to write down the long lyrics of Kuchh sher sunata hun main. Hasrat was the romantic in the SJ-Hasrat-Shailendra-Mukesh team.

@92,
Tumse badhkar duniya mein na dekha koi aur: Befitting song.
@93,
Chaand jaisa badan phool sa pairhan: Heard for the first time. Nice song. Nice song, but Chandrashekhar’s jumping seems to be discordant.
Pradeep Kumar and Meena Kumari paired many movies together. This is one such.

AK ji
Joseph ji @ 70 has posted a unique song where a woman praises woman’s beauty.
Here is another one but it is in Marathi.
The song is from Amar Bhupali and it is written by 19th century poet Honaji Bala who popularised lavani in Maharashtra (he also wrote in other forms).
Latpat latpat tujh chalan – Vasant Desai Lata
The imagery used by the poet to describe woman’s beauty is so rich and unique that it is difficult to emulate it.
Kanti navnavtichi most probably refers to snake’ s skin after the shedding catechu
Prabha chandrachi is obviously moonlight
Oth pavali should mean nectar
Jai chi ga vel kavali refers to bela chameliya
My limited ability does not allow me to translate it fully
Presumably the dancer is describing herself in the song therefore it could also be considered as a narcissist song.
Incidentally Sanjay Leela Bhansali used very briefly part of this song in Bajirao
https://youtu.be/xODpqB8cuzo
Original
https://youtu.be/tzRFLMn4kpM
Pinga – Bajirao Mastani
Again Rafi in this duet .
‘ … Apsara koi aaye toh dekhun nahin…’
‘ Tujhe jeevan ki…’/ 1962 / ASLI NAQLI / Hasrat Jaipuri / SJ / Rafi , Lata
https://youtu.be/3OivA5aHVdQ
Mr S Joseph @95,
I am always impressed by Roshan’s tunes for Rafi. Very nice song.
@96,
Again a superb melody.
@97,
Interesting, how same words sound so different with a different composition, for a debonair star.
Dr Deshpande @98, 99, 102,
Rafi magic in this genre. Excellent.
@100,
Aap ki aankhon mein kuchh mehke huye se raaz hain: Gulzar was tops.
@101,
Khoobsurat ho teri har ada hai haseen: But Zeenat Amman is very irritable.
Mr S Jospeh @103,
Ye wadiyan ye fizaayein: It is a beautiful song. Ravi-Rafi combination was too good.
@105,
Tujhe jeevan ki dor se: Another beautiful song.
Mr Muli @104,
Thanks a lot for posting this beautiful Lavani from Amar Bhopali. You would not believe the coincidence, I was just discussing the film, Honaji, and Panditrao Nagarkar who played Honaji in the film, with a friend.
My guess is… Rafi is in the lead.
A great team has given this gem. Add to that Rafi’s golden singing. Luckily…. good quality video as well as audio.
‘ Rukhh se zara…’/1968 / MERE HUZOOR / Hasarat Jaipuri / SJ / Rafi
https://youtu.be/MTwtrF243kY
Mr S Joseph,
I absolutely agree with you about Rukh se Zara naqab.
S.Joseph
@95
Really a superb song.
Want to add to the list
Chhalkaye Jaam Aaye Aap Ki Aankhon Ke Naam– Mere Hamdam Mere Dost
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsnrYj1rOKc
AKji,
After reading your post, I felt I must add another category of songs of mutual admiration – sometimes genuine and sometimes tongue in cheek; as if to say, you are great but I am no less. This reminds me of a post I had written long ago on my blog called the Tongue-in-cheek songs. I am posting the link here.
https://anitamultitasker.wordpress.com/2020/08/02/tongue-in-cheek-songs/
Do not know if this is a repeat .
A song from Kishore after a long time.
‘ Jeevan se bhari…’ / 1970 / SAFAR / Indeevar / Kalyanji Anandji / Kishore
https://youtu.be/v_nkcw1mD_8
Anita,
I went through the post. ‘Tongue-in-cheek’ would not have occurred to me.
AK ji ,
Yes .. U hv rightly balanced the focus from मैं in the Narsisist theme to तुम / आप in this praising a woman’s beauty theme .
I wud like to add 2 songs .
Tell whether they fit or nt .
1) जो बात तुझमें हैं
तेरी तस्वीर में नहीं
Movie ताजमहल
Sung by Rafi
Picturised on Pradeep Kumar
https://youtu.be/K-LpErDQEps
Nd as usual ,
a marathi song ..
very popular , nicely sung nd beautifully picturised ..
Having wonderful lyrics ..
a very different style of praising
2) कधी तू रिमझिम झरणारी बरसात
Movie मुंबई पूणे मुंबई
Sung by ऋषिकेश रानडे
Picturised on स्वप्निल जोशी nd मुक्ता बर्वे
https://youtu.be/VYdWSp8pIjg
Njoyed this post .
Thnx AK ji .
With best wishes ,
Pramod Godbole .
Pramodji,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Jo baat tujhmein hai teri tasweer mein nahin. What a Roshan-Rafi song. The Marathi song is quite good too, and quite befitting the theme. I knew Swapnil for mythologicals, but I have been impressed by his web series ‘Samantar’.
AK,
A hurriedly assembled post brought such a brisk response, 110 posts in 4 days. This showed the popularity of the topic. I was a little busy and today I researched it and found to my surprise that on such a hot topic the songs have not even reached the 100 mark and the posts have come to a trickle. And who could come to the mind other than Bhatiaji, who would have flooded the post. Josephji, Muliji and Dr Deshpande have posted a number of songs. Rafi rules as expected for such songs.
You mentioned the balancing act for the narcissist post. I had thought of ‘mana mere haseen sanam’ from The Adventures of Robinhood as a song which would cover both these posts. This is one of the ‘tongue in cheek’ songs of Anita’s post. This song is one of my favourites and not only this is a great credit to GS Kohli, but also from a very insignificant film.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4nUeOq__M0
There is another similar song which is also from a failed film Mohabbat Isko Kahte Hain.
‘Meri nigah ne kya kaam lajawab kiya’ – Rafi – Majrooh – Khayyam
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAH3mDlcqpA
Now two famous songs with the same tune. Besides the tune Shammi is the common factor. In the first Dilip Kumar is addressing the song to her and in the second she appears more interested than Nutan to whom the song is being addressed.
Ye hawa ye raat ye chandani – Sangdil – Talat
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUStnBNaH7I
Tujhe kya sunaun main dilruba – Aakhari Dao – Rafi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nc8wYuZyMdU
There has been flooding of the post with Rafi songs who was without doubt the best in this genre. But, to me Mukesh has been great in this genre and certainly second best. A number of Mukesh songs have been posted, but a number great ones have been left out. Here are some of his songs-
Chand si mehbooba ho meri – Himalay Ki God Men
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYjVa10bP1c
Gusse men jo nikhra hai us husn ka kya kehna – Dil Hi To Hai
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mzgmS0to9M
Dheere re chalo mori banki hiraniya – Johar Mehmood In Goa
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=447UQhD6n3w
Dekhti hi raho aaj darpan na tum – Nai Umar Ki Nai Fasal
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jS0CMgy3L5E
And now a song with a difference. Tuntun is the target.
Itna husn pe huzoor na guroor kijiye – Mohabbat Isko Kehte Hain
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfmdD20NhTw
Hans @118,
Thanks a lot for your response and addition of so many exquisite songs. My pick is Tujhe kya sunaaun main dilruba. In spite of the story about it being a copy of Ye hawa ye raat ye chaandni. Madan Mohan has composed a great song. That story does not take away any credit from him.
@119,
All the Mukesh songs you have added are superb.
More from Mukesh .
‘ Dekhti hi raho…’/ 1966 / NAYI UMAR KI NAYI FASAL / Indeevar / Roshan / Mukesh

Mukesh again.

Mr S Joseph @121,
Dekhti hi raho aaj darpan na tum: Very good song. Hans has posted a number of Mukesh songs @119 which includes this song.
@122,
Nain ka chain churakar le gayi: Excellent song. Thanks.
@123,
Chaand ko kya maloom chahta hai use koi chakor: Impressed by your recall. Nice song.
Now I proceed to post some songs sung by Rafi. A lot many songs by him have been posted, but a lot of them remain. First, I post some of the very famous gems.

Sambha of Sholay fame is acting as female, but an actual female appears in imaginations.
Ye jhuki jhuki nigahen teri – Aao Pyar Karen – Rajinder Krishan – Usha Khanna

‘ Ik buth banaunga…’/ 1962 / ASLI NAQLI / Hasrat Jaipuri / SJ / Rafi
https://youtu.be/2sgKeQwzg2w
What a lovely bouquets of Rafi songs!
Hans @125,
I think one straightforward categorisation can be direct vs indirect praise of a woman’s beauty. The leading song of direct praise remains Chaudahvin Ka chaand ho. On this axis Mehbooba teri tasveer and Haye tabassum tera would be in Direct category?
@126,
Sab jawan sab haseen: Direct?
@127,
Nice category. Maine shayad tumhein pahle bhi kahin dekha hai: Closer to Direct?
@128,
Nice discovery. Who would have though Mac Mohan would have a song of love by the hero addressed to him?
@129,
Ae phoolon ki rani bahaaron ki malika probably falls in Direct category.
@130,
Even if irritating, Kaan mein jhumka chaal mein thumka falls in Direct category?
Rest of the songs are closer to Indirect or Derived category.
@131,
The dividing line in Mukesh songs is more clear. Gori nain tumhaare kya kahne; Gore gore chaand se mukh par clearly fall in Direct category.
Mr Joseph @132,
Per above discussion, Ek but banaaunga falls in Indirect category.
One more from Aao Pyar Karen . Perhaps one of Usha Khanna’s best . Rafi again.
‘ Jahan tu hai…’/1964 / Rajinder Krishan /AAO PYAR KAREN / Usha Khanna / Rafi

Mr S Joseph,
Jahan tu hai is a superb song.
Its wonderful to see Hansji in a terrific form!!

Dr Deshpande @137,
Hans not only posts songs, but he also describes patterns and unique feature about the songs. Matwali naar thumak thumak chali jaaye is a beautiful son and wonderful dance by Waheeda Rehman. ‘He sings, she dances’ can be a nice theme.
@138,
Sharbati teri ankhon ki is a very good song of praise. What is ‘sharrbati’?
@139,
Ye naina ye kaajal ye zulfein ye aanchal: Heard for the first time. Very befitting song for the theme.
@140,
Phoolon sa chehra tera kaliyon ki muskan hai is my great favourite among new songs. I believe the film’s Telugu version was a roaring success.
@141,
Kitna haseen chehra kitni pyari ankhein: Heard for the first time.
@142,
Bholi si surat ankh mein masti: Nice song. Udit Narayan had a more charming than his contemporary Kumar Sanu.
When I was a little boy in Jhansi I remember the song Teri Pyari surat ko
God bless you
Devasis Chowdhury,
What a connection. Thanks a lot for your good wishes.
AK @ 133,
I think we can have another category. The classic case is ‘aapke haseen rukh pe aaj naya noor hai’. There Dharmendra was singing for Tanuja but Mala Sinha, who was the elder sister, mistook it for herself. And later she realised her mistake with the song ‘wo hans ke mile humse hum pyar samajh baithe’. Mistaken identity is quite a common theme in our films. Even in ‘sab jawan sab haseen’ he is singing for Mala Sinha, but Nishi is thinking it is for her.
As per the story line ‘mehbooba teri tasveer’ appears to me to be indirect, because Dharmendra does not know Sadhana is there.
Josephji @ 135,
We have many common likes, so there is no surprise you like ‘jahan tu hai’. Bhatiaji also has quite similar likes. He told me about your visit to him in Gurgaon and admitted the similarity of likes with you.
Dr Deshpande(137) & AK(143),
I think Mr Muli also posts songs with patterns at times and Josephji also posts similar songs, but since he posts one song at a time, the impact is not visible.
I prefer making a list and then clubbing them – wherever possible – together with my views on the basis of lyrics and situation. So it looks more effective. Even on this topic I have 100+ songs, which I am gradually posting as I get time. As the post came on 29th June and Bhataji left us on 30th, I am deputising for him also. I will post a few more.
Hans @146,
Mistaken identity is surely very common, starting from Andaaz (1949) to Aah to much later Saajan and still later Bareilly Ki Barfi. But do we have as many songs of praise of a woman’s beauty with mix-up by the recipients?
AK ji,
Thanks for a fascinating post and a collection of songs which incidentally brought in most of famous male playback singers of that particular era. It struck me that you had not included songs by Mahendra Kapoor and Chitalkar.
Within a short time Joseph ji linked Mahendra Kapoor’s ‘Bhool sakta hai(Dharamputra)’; ‘Kaun ho tum(Stree)’ and also songs from film Kaajal, Kahin din kahin raat and Navrang.
Does the song ‘Kajra mohobbat wala (Kismat: music by OPN)’ qualify?
In the Qawwali ‘Nigahen milane ko jee chahta hai(Asha Bhosle)’ the lady is not praising zulf or eyes or lips separately but straightaway includes everything in the word “jalwa”.
Thanks.
Tyagiji,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. It was impossible to include too many male singers. But Mahendra Kapoor did sing some outstanding songs which slipped from my mind.
‘Kajra mohabbatwala ankhiyon mein aisa dala’ can fit into this categry, because one of the cross-dressers is acting a woman.
@ 126 I posted some songs of Rafi on some lesser known characters. Rafi’s specialisation on this theme gave these persons gems to remember themselves with. Actually I had a longer list, but I mistakenly clicked on the submit button after just 3 songs.
‘Ruk ruk chakme jhuk jhuk chamke’ is a song filmed on Sudesh Kumar known for lead role in Saranga, but who later did some side roles and occasional role of villain. Film is Pehli Raat, song composed by Ravi.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MRcUSduNMw
‘Teri tasveer bhi tujh jaisi haseen hai lekin’ filmed on Chetan Anand in film Kinare Kinare.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkUlq0N-clo
Now two brothers.
Randhawa brother of Dara Singh lip synced the song ‘main to tere haseen khayalon men kho gaya’ in film Sangram. In fact the lyricist Aish Kanwal and composer triplet Lala-Asar-Sattar of this song are so less known that they can feel proud to be associated with this song.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCRVXVyGeBk
Now is the turn of brother of Johny Walker who entered films as Vijay Kumar. This song ‘zara sun haseena e nazneen mera dil tujhi pe nisar hai’ written by Shakeel and composed by Ravi he will always remember to be a highlight of his career.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIXh9vxFQ-I
Sehra is a film known for ‘taqdeer ka fasana’ ‘pankh hote to ud aati re’ and ‘sajna tum to pyar ho’. The hero was Prashant, one of whose song ‘mana mere haseen sanam’ I have already posted. He sang another song which is lesser known but is uniquely composed ‘lagi mast nazar ki katar’.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PheQFcGiIOg
Now some different sort of persons who felt different degrees of poetic talent based on viewing the beauty.
In ‘main kahin kavi na ban jaun tere pyar men ae kavita’ from Pyar Hi Pyar’ (Rafi) he skeptic of his poetic abilities.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClNxYSahjZk
But, in Bobby Rishi Kapoor feels he has learnt ‘shayari’ just looking at his beloved. The song ‘main shayar to nahin’ is sung by Shailendra Singh as we all know. This is the song where the hero is addressing the song to the dancer, but actually has another in his heart who has inspired the song.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmeMg-gm1Us
Now in ‘mere nagmon men un mastana ankhon ki kahani hai’ sung by Talat the lip-sync-er tells us he is a poet. This song is from film Alif Laila which was the last film composed by Shyam Sunder. He died during the making of the film and Madan Mohan did the residuary work anonymously.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgOv0lQ5QrI&t=2s
This one is boldly claiming that he can make a ‘geet’ from various body parts of the heroine. The mukhda
‘tere hothon ko teri lali ko tere yauvan ki haryali ko,
teri angdayi men mila doon, bolo to geet bana doon.’
This beautiful song has been written by Verma Malik, composed by Usha Khanna and sung by our favourite Mukesh. The hero Premendra and the heroine Sanjana are lesser known.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nThMIDsPiWU
Hans @152,
This is brilliant. Rafi’s great songs for unknown characters is such a fascinating subject. We don’t know if these immortal songs did anything to their career. They remained as unknown as ever.
Teri tasveer tujh jaisi haseen hai lekin: In fact all the ‘tasveer’ songs had this theme. Talat Mahmood’s iconic NFS Tasveer teri dil mera bahla na sakegi stands all tall as ever. Rafi’s Tasveer banata hun tasveer nahin banti is picturised on a lesser known actor.
@153,
If you enlarge the theme of inspiration many songs would fall in this category. Tu kahe agar jeevan bhar main geet sunata jaaun, manbeen bajata jaaun would qualify. And many more.
AK ji
As you have remarked, Hansji’s Rafi songs are simply brilliant. My college years started in mid seventies and obviously we had a KK fixation in those years.
Here are few KK songs
Raat Kali ek khwab me – Budha mil gaya – Majrooh – RDB
For once there is appreciation of ” sawanli Surat”
https://youtu.be/qgsbn8IoUqc
O Hansini – Zahareela Insaan – Majrooh – RDB
https://youtu.be/vjmOomq2x2A
But the appreciation is taken to a completely different level in the following
Meri Kali kaluti ke – Apne rang hajar – Anjaan – KA
https://youtu.be/1y7aGmPPfCw
Mr Muli,
You have taken the discussion to a different level culminating in Meri kaali kaluti ke nakhre bade.
AK, @ 154
“We don’t know if these immortal songs did anything to their career. They remained as unknown as ever.”
You ask a question and answer it yourself. Is this some kind of sarcasm, because it is hard to digest so much praise of Rafi who do not like him. Otherwise how you can expect a song or two to influence a career. Have you ever thought of applying this yardstick in connection with any other singer. Rafi makes you use different yardsticks for him alone, that is his quality.
They are not unknown, that is why I labelled them lesser known. In your post on ‘Mukesh’s romance with dil’ I had mentioned ‘kisi nargisi nazar ko dil denge hum’ and you asked the name of the actor on which the song was picturised. That is the power of an immortal song. Maruti will ever be remembered with that song, just because it was picturised on him. You wrote a post on Daan Singh who is known for composing the twin Mukesh gems in My Love. One or two songs may not make a career but they certainly make an impact.
Not only these lesser knowns, even in the case of later stars, who are associated with KK, the most remembered songs of ‘praising a woman’ are by Rafi. The best Amitabh song of this category would be ‘koi aur duniya men tumsa haseen hai’ from Pyar Ki Kahani. In the case of Rajesh Khanna the list is quite long. Couple of songs have already been posted. ‘Aur kuchh der thehar aur kuchh der na ja’ and ‘ye raat hai pyasi pyasi’ have gained immortal status. Here I post three songs from film Mehboob Ki Mehndi. The two by Rafi come under the theme of this post. The song by KK can not strictly come under this but is never-the-less a romantic songs. The difference between Rafi and KK in handling the romantic songs is clearly visible. In a discussion at ‘mohdrafi.com’ with a KK fan I had asked him about ‘mere deewanepan ki bhi dawa nahin’ and he promptly replied that it is a sad song. Look for yourself.
Mere deewanepan ki bhi dawa nahin – KK
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReBkow2X9yQ
Pasand aa gayi hai ik kafir haseena – Rafi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atsfvBWfX_w
Ye jo chilman hai dushman hai hamari – Rafi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCcd42LHgoA
‘Tasveer banata hoon tasveer nahin banti’ is from Baradari picturised on Chandrasekhar and is a Talat song. Perhaps you wanted to mention ‘tasveer banata hoon teri khoone jigar se’ from Deewana and picturised on Suresh, who was quite well known in his times.
Mr Muli, @ 155
I left college in 1974, so we can, if you agree, leave the suffix of ‘ji’. When I was in college Rajesh Khanna was ruling, but I was a radio buff which was replete with Rafi songs, so I remained with him and other golden era singers and in addition going with good KK songs too. Our college mates would go ga ga over songs like ‘chupke se dil de de nahin te shor mach jayega’. It is just a matter of choice.
You talked about use of ‘sanwli’ for beauty. How about this 1977 song ‘kahin ek massom nazuk si ladki, bahut khoobsoorat magar sanwli si’ from Shankar Hussain.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyr9QZSxREA
I posted the song ‘pehle mile the sapnon men’. The antara says ‘o sanwli haseena dil mera toone chheena’. So the word is used quite often. But, your song ‘kali kaluti’ is, instead of praise, an outright humiliation throughout the song until Leena does some ‘gandhigiri’ with her share of lines, which bring Sanjeev Kumar to his senses.
A few songs from the romantic saint Hemant Kumar to showcase his ability on this theme.
Chali gori pee se milan ko chali – Ek Hi Raasta – Majrooh – Hemant
Again a gem falling to the lot of a lesser known character.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJzaXWfmu0A
Tumhare nain dekh ke suna hai log jogi ho gaye – Rahgir – Gulzar – Hemant
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HkWEP2tcZ4
Now a lesser known yet a great song from film Heer, composed by Anil Biswas and written by Majrooh.
Ik chand ka tukda, ik phool sa mukhda
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laY7yW2Wh_E
Hansji
You left college in 1974 and I started in that year. So I will use my prerogative of junior to address you as Hans ji. You continue to call me Mr Muli or even better as Rahul.
You have given examples of songs extolling Sanwalapan. Here is one more (and an absolute gem from MM )
Sawanri Surat man bahayee – Ada – Prem Dhawan – Lata
This also belongs to the rare ‘ reciprocal’ category.
https://youtu.be/CNegUh24wwE
AK ji
Reciprocal songs of appreciation have been less common maybe because heroines are very frugal in this regard.
However here is a song where two of them vie with each other to extoll their respective mehboobs
Mere mehboob me kya nahi- Mere mehboob – Shakeel – Naushad – Lata and Asha
https://youtu.be/52jcsA2cDjQ
Mr Muli,
Interestingly, both happen to be talking about the same person. Therefore, they were being simply matter-of-fact.
Rahul@ 161, AK@162,
“Reciprocal songs of appreciation have been less common maybe because heroines are very frugal in this regard.
However here is a song where two of them vie with each other to extoll their respective mehboobs”
Heroes beating Heroines in extolling their “Dilbar” in Deedar E Yaar.

Rahul, AK & Mumbaikar8,
I think the answer to mutual appreciation songs may lie in duets and there may be many of them available. In this post mostly solos are being looked for. But, Mr Sivanandam @55 mentioned ‘tere husn ki kya tarif karoon’ which certainly fulfils the criteria of mutual appreciation. Here is a vintage song ‘tu mera chand main teri chandni’.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8xPl-0_TT8
Another one is ‘do ankhiyan jhuki jhuki si’ from Prem Patra, which I kept because it was a duet.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8Czq6yGoVo
And here is a fun song from Dus Lakh, ‘teri patli kamar’.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JU1VXj5ZivY
We can find some of such songs in twin songs too. Here is a twin song from Ishara, ‘dil bekarar sa hai’ by Rafi and Lata sung separately.
First Rafi

And now Lata

Hans ji
Hans ji Your posting of Dus lakh songs immediately took me to Rafi number from the same film. I hope it has not been posted so far. It belongs to the category which you very aptly titled Irritating for the heroine
Aa lag ja gale dilruba – Prem Dhawan – Ravi
https://youtu.be/q_nB-hi3SMA
And this leads to another “Rustic” Rafi number
Kamal ke phool jaisa – Do aankhe – Verma malik- Hansraj behl
https://youtu.be/rxvAzRggEtg
AK ji, Hans ji, Mumbaikar ji
Where will this go ?
Two men singing for the same woman but if Dilip Kumar is brimming with delight Manoj is lamenting meekly and Wahida is uneasy with all the appreciation showered by the wrong person. The film itself had so many convoluted angles that viewers were left in a tizzy. To top it all there was the off screen confusion of who should sing for Manoj.
Kaisee Haseen Aaj – Aadmi- Shakeel – Naushad – Rafi and Mahendra Kapoor/ Talat Mahmood
https://youtu.be/lqhAPD0Tpzw
Mumbaikar8 @163,
“Heroines are very frugal in this regard”: The real reason may be cultural when women were supposed to be goongi gudiya. Secondly, women didn’t have much reason to praise the beauty of the man.
‘Dil bar’ song is very nice.
Hans @164,
Nice compilation of mutual appreciation songs.
Mr Muli @165,
Aa gale lag ja dilruba is indeed perfectly irritating song. I am not able to place Kamal ke phool jaisa badan tera chikna chikna in any category. Rekha was bloated from all sides during the initial years of her career.
@166,
The moneyed man gets the doll, but guilt gnaws at him. But since marriage is sacrosanct, all resolutions have to be around maintaining its purity. There was some pop psychology thrown in. After super success Ram Aur Shyam the audience was not willing to take it kindly.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDO9ZRSNB9s
Jagjit Singh in 1981 Prem Geet
When comedians get the praise songs, they are quite different and special. Here are some of them all by Rafi.
Naturally the first would be Johny Walker. In ‘ye ras teri baton ka chocholate’ JW is prising Meenu Mumtaz. From the mukhda one would think he would continue with eatables, but Rajinder Krishan provides him with words like Shimla, Kashmir, Chowrangee, Paris ki galiyan and Avadh ki sham and ends up with calling her ‘daal se tapka aam hai tu’.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpqmEgFo2PI
In Chhoo Mantar, JW played a singer by the name of Baiju Bawra, whose songs are liked by females and males are jealous. A few times he is beaten up and in the end is ousted from the village. He ends up loving Anita Guha.
Ankh men surat teri – Jan Nisar Akhtar – OPN
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fn4TZUMz5fA
In Duniya JW sings praises for three different females in a single song.
Tu hi meri laxmi tu hi meri chhaya – Hasrat – SJ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1bINksPrVM
In Mr India IS Johar is in a double role, the theme of which was used for Don of Amitabh. In the song he eats a lot of mirchi and Rafi modulates his voice for that.
Teri ankh men wo kamaal hai – Anjan – GS Kohli
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJ_HK9P1RJ4
Rajendranath considers that beauty of Aruna Irani lies in her ‘lal batua’.
Dil mera le gayi lal batue men – Rootha Na Karo – Hasrat – CR
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RM-ll9u4wOk
Rahul, @ 165
In Dus Lakh, Sanjay first irritated Babita by talking about his marriage to another girt and then sang this ‘manao’ song.
Everyone mentions that Rafi leads in the number of songs posted here . Do we give all the credit to the singer ? Perhaps the contributors of the tune , music , words and so many other components are less appreciated. Lyrics may perhaps be of prime importance for any song as people only listen to songs in the language they are familiar.
Here is one , not often heard Talat- Salil – RK song from the black and white era. This has been shot in the night.
‘ Aankhon mein masti…’ / 1961 / CHHAYA / Rajinder Krishan / Salil Choudhary / Talat
https://youtu.be/5IfV_ZyCxwo
Josephji,
Look at your comment no. 110 and song no. 9 in the main post.
I agree with Josephji, but it is very easy to observe the singer’s name and also the actor on whom it is picturised. Posting a topic like this in itself is a recognition of the lyricist, because it is he who brings the song into the world. Music is the next. But, the singer is very important. Otherwise there would not have been a flood of Rafi songs. You can not imagine CH Atma singing ‘haye tabassum tera’.
Repeats could happen and are never intentional .
‘ Dil mera tumhari…’/ 1968 / GAURI / Rajinder Krishan / Ravi / Ravi
https://youtu.be/lRfUfg55aBw
Is Mukesh exhausted? Answer is no. And no Mukesh fan can claim he has not heard them on Radio.
Sajaya na karo phool galon pe – Gunahon ke Raste – Naqsh Lyallpuri – Jagdish Khanna. Dara Singh’s place is taken by Radio.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwtdoxbSUV4
Tu lakhon men hai ek sanam – Birju Ustad – Qamar Jalalabadi – KA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mafSlMgXXE
Moti jaisa rang ang men – Aansoo aur Muskan – Indeevat – KA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7KYYVeOoGo
And who can forget.
Ae sanam jisne tujhe chand si soorat di hai – Deewana – Hasrat – SJ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QtXwgv9DH8
Here I am making an exception and posting a duet along with solos, because it is close to my heart and I challenge if anyone disagrees.
Ik raat men do do chand khile (with Lata) – Barkha – RK – Chitragupta
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9I06HdOyZE
Again Rafi. Perhaps for all such songs then , Rafi must have been the first choice and reluctantly the concerned would have given a chance to other singers.
Do not know if this song fits in here.
‘ Chhalke teri aankhon…’/ 1965 / AARZOO / Hasrat Jaipuri / SJ / Rafi
https://youtu.be/Qs5d8NGO6no
I have not posted any Mahendra Kapoor songs which may seem weird to friends, since I am his fan. So here are a few.
Ankhon men qayamat ke kajal – Kismat – SH Bihari – OPN
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqVWTecgm7U
Now there is a beautiful song ‘duniya banane wale ne jab chand banaya’ written by the old guard DN Madhok and composed beautifully at the fag end of his career by CR. This song looks like the praise of moon until the last line which says ‘humne zamin ka chand tujhe bhej diya hai’ and in comes the heroine.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIt4ZSv2kn0
Now two songs picturised on JW which, though great songs, would show the difference of a Rafi ‘tadka’ for comedians.
Ankhon ki talashi de de – Dil aur Muhabbat – Verma Malik – OPN
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6Mg-a0iLAc
Yaron ki tamanna hai – Kahin Din Kahin Raat – Aziz Kashmiri – OPN
Look at the changing riders on bicycle and tonga.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJx7PboBsAo
Now a song, from the same film, which was perhaps not picturised and so remained unknown, but is beautiful nevertheless.
Tumhare ye nakhre tumhari shararat
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hiJW9pbOZw
A hit song . Again the eyes. Beautiful humming by Asha Bhosle . Around 4′ 45″ into the video do not miss the whistling .
‘ O nigahen mastana… ‘ / 1957 / PAYING GUEST / Majrooh Sultanpuri / SDB / Kishore , Asha
https://youtu.be/JGKPtyfm_GI
Rafi brings ‘bahaar’ alive with his romantic singing. Let us see, after ‘baharo phool barsao’ and ‘ae phoolon ki rani baharon ki malika’ how much ‘bahaar’ is left in him.
Part I of the song ‘aane se uske aaye bahar’ in Jeene Ki Raah was about nature, though in the idiom of praise of the beauty. But this part II is directly for Tanuja to bring her out of her ailment. Anand Bakshi has produced a lot of songs of praise and there is hardly any surprise that he finds proper words again here. LP is just masterly.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkAglmfFbmY
The team of Hasrat/SJ again brings magic with leftist tinge of words for the leftist looking Sunil Dutt when he says ‘mere mehboob tere dum se hai duniya men bahaar, varna is gham se bhari duniya men kya rakha hai’ in film Bhai Bhai.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dsbIXDkBOI
LP and Anand Bakshi combine again to give Rajendra Kumar his favourite topic of ‘bahaar’ in ‘poochhe jo koi mujhse bahar kaisi hoti hai’. Even the name of the film is Aap Aaye Bahaar Aayi. Sort of irritating.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GqF7HIijUI
And now the Majrooh/Chitragupta bonding manages a beautiful ‘bahaar’ song, ‘abke bahar aayi hai tumhare naam se’ for Jeetendra in Aulad.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_whA1rvGwk
And now we move back to the fifties and the old team of Hasrat/SJ in the film Rajhath. The song is ‘aaye bahar ban ke lubha kar chale gaye’
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WTFX75Z4fM
Coincidence. Unbelievable. .. the word Bahaar. Hope not repeat.
‘ Aaj gulshan mein…’/ 1964 / BENAZIR / Shakeel Badayuni / SDB / Rafi
https://youtu.be/2dLgL0It1pE
LP – Anand Baksh i- Rafi
‘ Saare zamaane pe… ‘ / 1971 / AAP AAYE BAHAAR AAYEE / Anand Bakshi / LP / Rafi

AK ji , Hans ji
Mukesh – Chaand affair continues with this duet with Asha
Chehre se jara aanchal – Ek bar muskura do- SH Bihari – OPN
https://youtu.be/E9MxN7P2hEE
In the same film OPN used Kishor liberally
Roop Tera Aisa – Indeevar
https://youtu.be/gMsqMxSSfbc
Both the songs were picturised on Dev Mukharjee and considering his antics one is tempted to classify them as comedy songs. Also the director has fittingly used monkey in the first song.
And now a genuine comedy star again in Rafi’s voice
Mehbooba mehbooba- Sadhu aur Shaitan – Rajendra Krishna – LP
RK again comes up with crazy lyrics apt for the situation
https://youtu.be/mwyevT_vgTI
And finally a reciprocal song on bahar
Bahar banake wo muskuraye – Apne huye Paraye – Shailendra – SJ – Lata
https://youtu.be/goS766qWmH0
Hans,
As I was travelling I am catching up with comments with some lag.
@157,
You had summed it up nicely in your earlier post: “Rafi’s specialisation on this theme gave these persons gems to remember themselves with.”.
Thanks for correcting my obvious slip about the song Tasveer banata hun teri khoon-e-jigar se.
@159,
Fabulous songs of Hemant Kumar on the theme.
@171,
Rafi’s songs for comedians are a class by themselves. Nice ones.
@177,
Mukesh’s songs in praise of a woman are excellent. Duets are obviously included if these are in praise of a woman or reciprocal praise.
@179,
Mahendra Kapoor. You would single-handedly dredge out all the songs on this theme.
@181,
Having the word ‘bahaar’ in the song is a further micro division into a different class of songs. Wonderful songs.
Manoj @170
Hothon se chhulo tum mera geet amar kar do: Unique imagery.
Mr S Joseph @173,
As far as Copyright Law with regard to film songs is concerned, singer’s contribution is supposed to be the lowest. The lyricist is the creator of the song, Producer takes commercial risk, the music director composes the tune, recording company brings it to the market. But that is not how an average music lover reacts. The singer is recalled at the top; the lyricist is given the least credit. But now there is a thinking that it has to be aligned to the current realities.
@176,
It seems Rafi was tailor-made for such songs.
@178,
Chhalke teri aankhon se sharab aur zyada: Has to fit for which I coined the classification into ‘Direct’ and ‘Indirect’.
@180,
O nigaahein mastana: The song also starts with humming and the humming occurs frequently. In fact Nutan’s (Asha Bjuosle) part is only humming.
@182,
Dil mein ek jaan-e-tamanna ne jagah payi hai: Beautiful song.
@183,
Saare zamane pe mausam suhane pe: The song is quite good, but the actors are well past their ‘Use before’ date.
Mr Muli @184,
I am enjoying the comedy songs, they go completely wild. And Rafi is the man for that.
The reciprocal bahaar song is excellent. Thanks for your quick recall.
Josephji, @ 176
I agree that repeats can happen. I only referred to your own comment and the main post. The main post mostly contains 10 to 15 songs and we can easily check them before posting. Normally I do not mention repeats of songs posted in comments.
@ 189 , It is common experience that two or more persons may make the same choice and here it is an unintentional oversight .
Another popular song which may fit in
‘…haseen nazaron bhi ho khade , magar nazar usi par padey….’
‘ Zaroorat hai zaroorat…’/ 1962 / MANMAUJI / Rajinder Krishan / MM / Kishore

Kitni haseen ho tum – Ye Dil kisko du – Qumar Jalalabadi- Iqbal Qureshi – Rafi and Asha

Shashi Kapoor is so mesmerized by Ragini’s beauty that he cannot think a suitable metaphor ( at least in the mukhada)
A duet but may qualify here.
Do not know if LP would normally give a song to Asha .
‘ Kya teri zulfein …’/ 1965 / HUM SAB USTAD HAIN / Asad Bhopali / LP / Kishore , Asha

Mr S Joseph @190,
Zaroorat hai zaroorat hai ek shrimati ki is a great song.
@192,
LP played the market. Whatever sold, they were up to it.
Mr Muli @191,
If the tune is good, a song without any embellishment too would be very appealing.
A popular song again from Rafi. Am not sure if this gets covered here.
Rafi may be leading the singers list . Ravi could be among the leading MDs here.
‘ Zindagi ke safar… ‘/ 1963 / NARTAKI / Sahir Ludhyanvi / Ravi / Rafi

Mr S Joseph,
There is an indirect praise all right. One of the very best songs of Rafi.
Rahul, @ 184
Mukesh had his own way of rendering praise songs which was quite effective. I think by Ek Baar Muskura Do time they had done away with discussing situations with singers. Even if it had happened, I doubt if he could have kept up with the antics of Deb Mukherjee. I think the KK song from the film is not a praise song, strictly speaking, this is a kind of song a friend sings for his marriage. He did not know that his friend is marrying his girl friend and is singing this song on Radio as a sehra song.
The Sadhu aur Shaitan song was in my mind as a great comedy song. When Mehmood had settled as comedian, Manna Dey had become his voice. Here is a Manna Dey song of praise in comedy style, which would show how bollywood was cruel upon Manna Dey, who was given very few romantic or praise songs.
Yun na tan ke chalo – Dil Ne Pukara – Indeevar – KA

The reciprocal songs you talked about the reluctance of the females for praise. Here is a song from 1947 film Elaan which is a truly reciprocal song and female takes the lead.

AK, @ 185
I knew you are on a travelling spree, and consequently short of time, from your earlier comment on the ’12 year’ post.
I know duets qualify, but for ‘praise of woman’ point of view solos give a different feel.
More ‘bahaar’ songs mean another thing that this word was very popular with song writers. In praise songs we mostly find topics like ‘eyes’ ‘zulf’ ‘chaal’ ‘chaand’ ‘phool’ more than anything else.
One more Rafi song, but a duet

Now there are again some Rafi songs. The first three are from Sunil Dutt films and the last one is filmed on Bharat Bhushan.
This song ‘koi mujhse pooche ke tum mere kya ho’ from Ye Raaste Hain Pyar Ke with RK/Ravi magic had two parts. The first part is a classic praise song where Sunil Dutt has lot of good things to say of Leela Naidu. The second part is opposite of that when he learns about her infidelity. I am posting the first part. This song was a common favourite of Bhatiaji and me, which he must have posted 3-4 times at least.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6EPD7X0uJ8
The second song is also from the same film but is a fast paced song, the mukhda being ‘tum jispe nazar dalo us dil ka khuda hafiz’.

This one is from Bhai Bhai from which I posted one in the ‘bahaar’ grouping.

This is a great composition from Hemant Kumar from film Champakali, written by again Rajinder Krishan.

This 1965 movie had many hit songs . One song was posted earlier @ 97 .
This song may also get covered here…
‘ Khwaab ho tum…’ / 1965 / TEEN DEVIYAN / Majrooh Sultanpuri/ SDB / Kishore
https://youtu.be/Jw4wLVnFJ-E
One more from the same movie . This is a duet and I do not know if this would get covered here. Asha was not SDB’s first choice and her singing here means SDB and Lata had still not patched up .
‘ Arey yaar meri …’ / 1965 / TEEN DEVIYAN / Majrooh Sultanpuri/ SDB / Kishore , Asha

First a song filmed on comedian Bhagwan from film Lal Nishan.

Dr Deshpande @199,
Ye chehra ye zulfein jaadu sa kar rahe hain: Heard it for the first time. It is good to have some post-70s experts on the blog.
@200,
Zulfon ko hata lo chehre se: And now my top Rafi-OPN favourite. Has figured at the top earlier in my favourite songs on zulf.
@201,
Chaand jaise mukhade par bindiya sitara: One of the best songs of Yesudas. With Rajkamal as the music director Yesudas was melody personified.
Tujhe dekhkar jagwaale par yakeen nahin: I must be hearing it for the first time. Dry nice song.
@202 and @203,
I have to admit these songs are unknown to me.
Hans @204,
Koi mujhse poochhe ki tum mere kya ho: This song is too good. Do you think the picturisation is like that of Chaudahvin ka chaand ho?
Tum jispe nazar daalo us dil ka khuda hafiz: Excellent song.
But the last song O gwalan kyon mera man teri chitwan le gayi is the pick of the lot. Wonderful song. Thanks for posting it.
@207,
The comedy song Teri nazar ki chabhi ne khola mere dil ka tala follows the tradition of coming with wackiest lyrics. Nice one.
Mr S Joseph @205, 206,
Beautiful songs from the film Teen Deviyan (1965). By this time SD Burman and Lata Mangeshkar had patched up. He must have chosen Asha Bhosle voluntarily. Great songs.
AK ji
2 songs with almost same mukhada one from vintage and the other from golden era
Aa teri tasveer – Rekha – Qumar Jalalabadi- Damodar Sharma – Harish & Leela Chitnis

Aa teri tasveer – Nadaan- PL Santoshi- Chick chocolate – Talat

Mr Muli,
Nice discovery. This is a positive version of tasveer songs which talk of tasveer being inadequate to express love.
The hero drawing his beloved’s portrait was a tribute to her beauty and this was used in many movies. The appreciation of the beauty through a song is perhaps enhanced by this additional on screen show.
All this was before mobile phone cameras .
After three such portrait songs @95 , 114 and 211, here is one from the year 1952 which should qualify here .
( Video and audio quality poor)
Tasveer banata hoon…’/ 1952 / DEEWANA / Shakeel Badayuni / Naushad /Rafi
https://youtu.be/SCwOYZUtahg0
Mr S Joseph,
This is a beautiful tasveer song. It’s stanzas can be interpreted as praise to the woman, be cause the hero would prefer to see her live rather through her painting.
Lovely songs on lovely subjects! I am grateful to have been introduced to “Tere labon ke muqabil gulab kya hoga.”
“Chhalka Yeh Jaam Aaye Aapki Aankhon Ke Naam” from “Mere Hamdam, Mere Dost” comes to mind as a particularly literal toast to the lady’s beauty.
Shelomit,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. I am happy that you enjoyed the song. Now I suspect you know Hindustani very well. 🙂
While I have a respectable amount of Hindustani, I would not claim to know that amount well ( ; Everything I know is picked up from films or songs and clarified only by my periodic excursions through the Hindi-English dictionary. I am always eager to learn more and appreciate those occasions when you have included grammatical topics or comments in your blog posts!
