The path, the traveller, the journey and the destination

12 May 2018

Raah-musafir-safar-manzil

We are told that to succeed in life we have to have a goal, and we have to take the right path to reach there. But how do we get to the right path? You reach a fork in life, you choose a path and that makes all the difference. Had you chosen the other path your life would have panned out in an entirely different way. Our ancients said महाजनो येन गत: स पन्था:।The right path is the one that has been trodden by the great men. But Javed Akhtar does not like to go where everyone goes; he does not like travelling on the worn-out path.

जहां जाते हैं सब जाना उधर अच्छा नहीं लगता
मुझे पामाल रस्तों का सफ़र अच्छा नहीं लगता

But is life about having a goal or destination? Nishkaam karma would mean you do your best, but you don’t control the outcome. Therefore, you don’t allow yourself to be affected by success or failure. Life is an eternal journey. If you enjoy the journey, every stop is a destination, and wherever you reach you are successful.

‘फ़ैज़’ थी राह सरबसर मंज़िल
जहां पहुंचे कामयाब आए

When we were children and we travelled by the train in the third class, the fun was in the journey – the vendors selling their wares in sing-song voices, the language of signages and songs changing as the train entered a new state, the noise, and the nosey co-travellers. Reaching the destination filled us with a sense of joy and, at the same time, some sadness that the journey was over. Even when we grow up a child remains within us. After a nice holiday, we know we have to come back home, but we wish the good times continued some more. Nida Fazli has said:

न जाने कौन सा मंज़र नज़र में रहता है
तमाम उम्र मुसाफ़िर सफ़र में रहता है

In Robert Service’s Spell of Yukon, the prospector leaves the warmth of his cotton fields down south, and straggles through the bone-chilling cold in big dizzy mountains and deep death-like valleys, yet it is not the gold he is wanting:

There’s gold, and it’s haunting and haunting;
It’s luring me on as of old;
Yet it isn’t the gold that I’m wanting
So much as just finding the gold.
It’s the great, big, broad land ’way up yonder,
It’s the forests where silence has lease;
It’s the beauty that thrills me with wonder,
It’s the stillness that fills me with peace.

I mentioned co-travellers, among other things, that make the journey joyous. Since our films were mostly ‘musical romances’, the essence of journey was having a हमसफ़र – ‘हमसफ़र अब ये सफ़र कट जायेगा’. At times you start alone and people join as you go along. मैं अकेला चला था जानिब-ए-मंज़िल मगर/ लोग आते गए कारवां बनाता गया। That has been the journey of Songs of Yore. Even after eight years, we find new travellers joining SoY with excitement at discovering the blog, and that makes the journey worthwhile.

But at times there are journeys you have to undertake alone – Ekla chalo re. More fundamentally, we come alone in this world and we go alone. Zeest safar hai tanhaayi ka; Aana tanha jana tanha. We are all भीड़ के बीच अकेला.

देखिये तो है कारवां वरना
हर मुसाफ़िर सफ़र में तनहा है.
(Jamil Nazar)

As you see from the above, raah, musafir, safar and manzil are intertwined. Allama Iqbal has said:

ढूंढता फिरता हूं मैं इक़बाल अपने-आप को
आप ही गोया मुसाफिर आप ही मंज़िल हूं मैं.

But a modern poet Rajesh Reddy weaves all the four in a strange relationship:

मैं अजब मुसाफ़िर हूं मेरा सफ़र अजीब
मेरी मंज़िल और है और मेरा रस्ता और.

This disconnect seems to be that of a drifter. You might think that a traveller on a path has more agency. Is that really so? In the western countries, you would rarely find a person driving (or even walking) to a place without the help of GPS. GPS is catching up in India too. Have you given a thought whether you choose the path or the GPS dictates you? The middle-class parents today are the GPS to the teenagers. Do Class XII with science, take coaching, write medical or engineering entrance exams, go to a professional college, your life has become ‘secure’. This GPS sometimes goes horribly wrong, such as in Kota suicides. (Kota – Coaching capital of India)

When I wrote posts on kinara, naiya and river, there were a lot of comments on raah, musafir, safar and manzil. Both the journeys are a metaphor for the journey of life. But one apparent difference was that in the boat you are ferried by a boatman across the river. In the journey of the musafir on a raah, there is no apparent boatman, but there are unknown forces determining our destiny. Both the journeys have their own romance.

A post on the path, the traveller, the journey and the destination was long overdue. Hindi film songs capture all the romance and diverse emotions of this raah, musafir, safar and manzil, as they do of nadi, naiya, manjhi and kinara. With hundreds of songs on the theme, each deserved a separate post, but since they are so inextricable from each other I am presenting a sample of songs in a single post.

1. Raah bani khud manzil by Hemant Kumar from Kohra (1964), lyrics Kaifi Azmi, music Hemant Kumar

The hero has got his companion. Therefore, his raah has become his manzil.

2. Main to chala jidhar chale rasta by Kishore Kumar from Dhadkan, lyrics Prem Dhavan, music Ravi

Sanjay Khan is quite happy to go wherever the road goes. He does not care at all about his destination or who his companion would be – Mujhe kya khabar hai kahan mari manzil, hoga koi mera bhi saathi. Wherever, whoever, I am happy with my life.

3. Main jahan chala jaaun bahar chali aye, Mahak jaye rahon ki dhool by Kishore Kumar from Banphool (1971), lyrics Anand Bakshi, music Laxmikant-Pyarelal

The same carefree attitude, and now Jeetendra is in a euphoric mood. Wherever he would go, the spring and joy would follow behind.

4. Musafir hun yaaro na ghar hai thikana, Mujhe chalte jana hai by Kishore Kumar from Parichay (1972), lyrics Gulzar, music RD Burman

But a year later, the Jumping Jack Jeetu has become mature and serious. In a situation of uncertainty about his abode and destination, this endless journey is poignant, until he would find a proper stopover.

5. Panthi hum main us path ka ant nahin jiska from Door Ka Rahi (1971), lyrics A Irshad, music director Kishore Kumar

Here is another sombre song of a traveller on an endless path. There is an interesting conversation between Kishore Kumar and Ashok Kumar. Every old path gives way to a new one; and the manzils seem endless. Only the co-travellers change.

6. Zindagi ka safar hai ye kaisa safar by Kishore Kumar from Safar (1970), lyrics Indeevar, music Kalyanji-Anandji

The journey of life is a puzzle; no one has figured it out.

7. Zindagi ek safar hai suhana by Kishore Kumar/ Asha Bhosle from Andaaz (1971), lyrics Hasrat Jaipuri, music Shankar-Jaikishan (both versions)

But despite the uncertainty of what will happen tomorrow, the life is beautiful when two people are in love. In this twin song the male version has been sung by Kishore Kumar for Rajesh Khanna. For a young romantic lover the song is appropriately peppy. The female version sung by Asha Bhsole for Hema Malini comes after her life goes through a tragedy and she rediscovers love with a new person. Therefore, though joyous, this version is set in a more serious mood.

8. Jeevan ke safar mein raahi milte hain bichhad jaane ko by Kishore Kumar/ Lata Mangeshkar from Munimji (1955), lyrics Sahir Ludhiyanavi, music SD Burman (both versions)

Another twin song – one by Kishore Kumar, the other by Lata Mangeshkar. Kishore Kumar for Dev Anand is chirpy as the character is carefree despite knowing that some co-travellers meet only to part. The life is like a train train journey. At different stations, some passengers get down, some new ones enter only to leave later. Lata Mangeshkar version for Nalini Jaywant is sad as some roadblock has come in the way of the lovers.

9. Nayi manzil nayi raahein naya hai meharban apna by Hemant Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar from Hill Station (1957), lyrics SH Bihari, music Hemant Kumar

This is a beautiful romantic song. With the new lover, the new path and the new destination, it is not known at which ethereal place this caravan will stop.

10. Kahan le chale ho bata do musafir by Lata Mangeshkar from Durgeshnandini (1956), lyrics Rajendra Krishna, music Hemant Kumar

Bina Rai has been transported to a dreamland and wonders where the traveller has brought her, and what lies beyond the stars.

11. Manzil ki dhun mein jhoomte gaate chale chalo by Mukesh from Anokhi Ada (1948), lyrics Shakeel Badayuni, music Naushad

Prem Adib is obviously in love. Therefore, he wanders carefree thinking of his manzil. Manzil here seems to have been used as a metaphor for attaining the lady-love.

12. Ek manzil rahi do phir pyar na kaise ho by Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar from Sanjog (1960), lyrics Rajendra Krishna, music Madan Mohan

When two co-travellers share the same destination love is inevitable. Madan Mohan has not composed too many songs for Mukesh. Here is a bubbly romantic duet.

I think we may consider:
– Hum hain rahi pyar ke- Kishore Kumar, Nau Do Gyarah
– Mohabbat ki raahon mein- Rafi, Uran Khatola
-Rahi matwale- Talat and Suraiya, Waris, Anil Biswas

2 N S Rajan May 12, 2018 at 11:43 am

Good theme. As usual, very good selections. You may like to add: Main rangeela pyaar ka rahi. Door meri manzil”. Choti Bahan. (1959) Subir Sen & Lata. Hasrat Jaipuri. Shankar Jaikishan. It is all about a ‘journey’ of LOVE.

3 Subodh Agrawal May 12, 2018 at 12:58 pm

An excellent theme, AK, and excellent selection; though I suspect there would be many more songs on raahi, rasta, musafir, safar, manzil etc. Three that come immediately to mind are: ‘Kahan le chalo ho, bata do musafir’ from Durgesh Nandini;

https://youtu.be/yYk2b0jdtmQ

‘Wahan kaun hai tera’ from Guide;

https://youtu.be/Oq-YghNEpNA

‘Saathi na koi manzil’ from Bambai ka Babu;

https://youtu.be/0GrqxZCSEH0

I am sure Mr KS Bhatia is going to be very busy.

AK ji;

This is one of my fav.theme and I have already started my journey packing my suitcase for my destinated place Atlanta . No matter where I am I will be enjoying visiting your post and contributing as well. This theme along with naiya , kishti, kinara , sahil, majhdar , maajhi , ….etc….etc…is all I am connected with . A long time back, perhaps in Open House , I had listed the genious of Shakeel Badayuni songs that he wrote maximum songs on ….naiya , kishti…and so on with non other than Naushad saheb .

Whenever I am abroad I do make it a point to shoot the best addressed landscapes towns street and roads with my sony handy camera ; switching on Mp3 of instrumentals and songs in my families car serving the visuals as background music . Enjoying off and own my travels over TV when I am back . Depending upon the song I usually switch the shoot to B&W mode to enhance its beauty. I have a company of Mr. Rangan ji who is having a sharp eye with his professional camera zooming on the best of visuals and songs !

Subodh Agrawal ji , more than me Dr, Shetty will be there busy like Bee and Surgeon too . His speed is amazing . Of course we have a geologist in Arvinder Sharma who is going to dig out the gems of vintage and golden era songs.

Yes, indeed a great theme and a good intro.

The American Poet influenced Jawaharlal Nehru very much. And also some of the poets quoted in the “Introduction”.
Here is his famous poem:
The Road Not Taken
By Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveller, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less travelled by,
And that has made all the difference.

But for me when I come to a fork I always take a long cut and not short because I get more benefits by seeing more and enjoying health as well
Short cuts cut short your chances and long cuts offer more!

Remembring few lines of great shailendra…..

…Aaye gaaye manziloan ke nishan ,
lehra ke jhooma jhooka aasman,
leekan rukega na yeh carvaan…..

…..nishan manziloan ke ,
yeh pairoan ke chhalle,
kahan ja raha hai ,
tu aye jjane waale

Every person tells a story about his personal achievments and failures as he travel thru time and space . There are many missed chances ….as they say….time and tide waits for none . They never come back , only arrested memories comes back to rectify the generation in waiting. A more of such songs…

R Nanjappa,
Hum hain raahi pyar ke; Mohabbat ki raahon mein; Raahi matwale – all are great songs.

NS Rajan,
Main rangeela pyar ka raahi is indeed an outstanding song on the theme. I was trying to avoid repetitions. This had figured in my post on Subir Sen.

Subodh,
Kahan le chale ho also came to my mind, and figures at #10 in the post. Wahan kaun hai tera musafir; Saathi na koi manzil are great songs. That leads me two questions – which music director composed the most raah/musafir/safar/manzil songs, and songs which have all the four components in them.

KS Bhatiaji,
What a selection! I am not sure about #5 but the other four fit like a T.

Shalan Lal,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Thanks for adding the Robert Frost poem. Obviously, I remembered ‘And that has made all the difference’ from this poem, but was not diligent enough to do the research. It seems Javed Akhtar has taken path less travelled by from here. When I come to a fork I take the busy one which gives more comfort that this can’t go wrong.

Akji,

Thanks for another admirable theme, the metaphor ‘life is a journey’ viewed through the lens of Bollywood songwriting. Excellent selection of songs. The pick of the lot are Panthi hum main us path ka ant nahin jiska and Musafir hun yaaro na ghar hai thikana, Mujhe chalte jana hai.

Here are some more additions

“which music director composed the most raah/musafir/safar/manzil songs”
My guess is Laxmikant Pyarelal.
I think the most number songs on this theme must have been rendered by Kishore Kumar.

Song #8 is sung by Dwijen Mukherjee. Song #10 does not fit directly. Other songs added by you are two good.

Venkataramanji @8, 11, 12 and 15,
These are beautiful additions. Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein seems to be full of Raah/Musafir songs.

Arvind @9,
Heard the song for the first time. Thanks for adding it.

Arunji,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Le chala jidhar ye dil nikal pade fits perfectly.

22 AK May 13, 2018 at 8:08 am

Anup,
You rightly had a doubt about Dil ki manzil kuchh aisi manzil. Though the word ‘manzil’ figures in the song, it has not been used in the context of a ‘raah’ or ‘traveller’. Other songs fit nicely. Your song #14 Kashti ka khamosh safar is very interesting, it combines the two forms of journey. A true metaphor for the journey of life.

KS Bhatiaji,
Some great songs you have added. Some have very deep meaning. For example, Jeevan se lambe hain bandhu ye jeevan ke raste – its literal meaning would be very superficial, not touching even the surface of what the poet means. Can you please try? Songs #13 and 18 were new to me. I especially liked #13.

Gaddeswarupji,
O pardesi musafir tu kisko pukare is a fantastic song. But the emphasis is on ‘pardesi’ (literally meaning ‘foreigner’, but ‘stranger’ is closer). That is another interesting theme on which you had given some unique perspective long ago, and had also sent some links. The picturisation of the song is a bit confusing. The song is apparently romantic, but Suraiya is pulling a cradle which has a small child in it. The child grows a little in the song when Lata Mangeshkar’s part appears (for Nigar Sultan?). Off and on, the hero Suresh also comes in the frame, but not with either lady. Interesting puzzle for a mathematician to solve.

23 R Vasudevan May 13, 2018 at 9:24 am

Interesting post.
I would like to add just two songs though there are plenty to append.

1. Ruk ja na nahi thu kahi haar ke………..woh rahi woh rahi
Kishore Kumar in Imthihaan. A lively composition by Lakshmikanth Pyarelel.

2. a rare duet in the sense not played much in the media.
ye albeli pyar ka rahi …… from the film Dharthi
Lata and Rafi
Shankar Jaikishan composition is a bit different here as less
of orchestra is used but a catchy tune.

24 AK May 13, 2018 at 9:46 am

Mr Vasudevan,
Perfect fit. Thanks a lot for posting the songs.

25 mumbaikar8 May 13, 2018 at 11:39 am

AK,
Impressed by the use of the couplets and also by the new direction to the सफर
Javed Akhtar can choose his path, for me even when I thought I had chosen the path, after some time have realized that I was chosen by the path, but no matter how soiled the path I walk I always find few untouched spots on that path
Coming to the songs, it is probably one the few times that I do not very much like the choice of your songs, other than the two songs mentioned by Venkataramanji one I liked is manzil ki dhoon me.
I feel ksbhatiaji is coming up with very good songs. Keep it up bhatiaji.
I could think about two songs about having been moved on leaving the राह behind.
First one

Mumbaikar8,
Thanks. But for you not to like any of the songs except one, I can only turn poetic: हमलोग इस सफर में एक दूसरे से बहुत दूर हो गए हैं.

27 Canasya May 13, 2018 at 4:04 pm

AKji:

So, SoY has turned philosophical—at the age of 8! The songs selected are all greatly popular. I expect a large treasure is waiting to be unearthed by Bhatiaji. Duets were underrepresented in the post (only 2 in a selection of 12). So, here is one more:

‘Bahut door mujhe chale jana hai’ (Kishore, Lata in ‘Heera Panna’, MD: RDB)

I also thought that a banjara song was missing, but I could be wrong.

Canasya,
Eight is the new eighty! Right time to turn philosophical. And if you are on any WhatsApp group you get plenty of philosophical stuff, besides other things. Banjara opens an antirely new dimension. When India lived in villages we belonged to that village. Now we are rootless banjaras.

29 mumbaikar8 May 13, 2018 at 5:22 pm

AK,
Canasyaji had hit the nail, the choice of songs are not on par with the philosophy. Instead of duet a triad from Doosra Aadmi

Great post, AK, and a lovely selection of songs. Nai manzil nai rahein was new to me – what a wonderful song! Thank you, especially, for introducing me to that. Another song which I think fits this theme is Kahin toh milegi… bahaaron ki manzil, raahi:

And Awara ae mere dil jaane kahaan hai teri manzil. I like both versions, but have a soft spot for the faster one:

Mahesh,
Tum kahan le chale ho; Ae mere dil lahra ke chal; Duniyawalon se door jalnewalon se door, aa ja aa ja chalein – what a selection of songs! All my favourites. But in most of the songs in the list, the journey is incidental to the main theme which is something else.

Madhu,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Kahin to milegi is one of my greatest Roshan-Lata Mangeshkar favourites. Fits with theme of ‘manzil’ being uncertain so well.

Thanks to Bhatiaji , Anupji, Mumbaikarji and others making a lot of good additions.
Anupji, I would request you to provide the links, that will be helpful.
Maheshji, Thanks for the posting some wonderful songs. It was expected of you as a die-hard fan of Mukesh.

34 N Venkataraman May 14, 2018 at 12:04 am

Akji,
Getting back to your question posed @ 7,
“which music director composed the most raah/musafir/safar/manzil songs”
Earlier, my guess was Laxmikant Pyarelal. Now it seems it is a toss between, SJ, LP and KA.
And the second one.
“songs which have all the four components in them.”

The only song (among the songs posted till now) that fulfills the criteria is the one mentioned by Anupji, Humsafar Ab Yeh safar by Mukesh & Lata Mangeshkar, film Juari (1968), lyrics Anand Bakshi, music Kalyanji-Anandji. It has all the components , Safar in the mukhda, Manzil in the second antara, Musafir and Raah in the last antara. I think Maheshji has posted the link to the song.

I am posting two duets. Hope it would pass Akji’s strict scrutiny.

Venkataramanji,
I have no doubt about the first one. It is perfect – there is ‘safar’ and there is a beautiful ‘companion’. In the second one the emphasis seems to be on ‘love’.

Ms. Mumbaikar 8 , Venkatraman Ji, Jignesh ,

Took a day off yesterday , celebrating Mother’s Day and found a number of very beautiful quality songs posted by every one . Its a time now we should add the song writer’s name along with the mukhada of the song . That will show the trend and domination of the lyrist ruling with the best written songs during that year or during that decade . I know Ms. Mumbaikar and Jignesh would be very happy if we all do this little informative extra excercise . I appreciate the literary contribution of Ms. Shalan Lal from time to time…..that makes me study more on the subject of the theme.

Thanks AK ji for your appreciations . Some time songs do over ride the bounds due to their sheer beauty and contents and mind gets extra waves to ride the peaks . Over to some more songs…..

Javed Akhtar combines RabindranathThakur’s ‘jodi tor dak shune keu na ashe, tobe ekla cholo re, ekla chalo re” with his own, “ tanha raahi apani raah chalata jayega, ab to jo bhi hoga dekha jayega”

jodi tor dak shune keu na ashe, tobe ekla cholo re, tanha raahi apani rah chalata jayega, by Nachiketa Chakraborty & Sonu Nigam, film Bose – The Forgotten Hero(2005), lyrics Rabindranath Thakur & Javed Akhtar, music A R Rehman

har har disha hai raasta
bol tera hai kaun sa rasta

Mumbaikar8 @37,
If you ask me pointedly, I would have to do सप्रसंग व्याख्या as we had to do in our school exams in Hindi.

Wo hum na the wo tum na the
Wo rahguzar thi pyar ki
Luti jahan pe bewazah
Paalki bahaar ki

The spotlight seems to be on the protagonist lovers, and for some unknown reason there is devastation in the path of their love. Would you agree that this has some similarity with Nida Fazil’s couplet:

बेवफ़ा तो न वो थे न हम
यूँ हुआ बस हम जुदा हो गए.

When posting songs on a theme like this there can be three approaches to the question whether the song fits or not:

i. The moment a doubt arises, discard it. Include only those songs which even a most stringent test can not reject.
ii. Any song in which the keyword occurs in any sense can be included.
iii. Between the above two extremes, leave the judgment to the readers.

Therefore, my answer to your question is ‘yes’, or ‘no’. You decide.

And, by the way, the song is outstanding.

45 AK May 14, 2018 at 10:09 pm

KS Bhatiaji @39 and 41,
Song #21 and 26 are my great favourites. The link with ‘raah’ in these songs is very tenuous. When I wrote the post I thought of songs in which the main theme is the path/traveller/journey/destination. But Ienjoy your songs. Please do carry on.

Venkataramanji @40, 42 and 43,
Nadiya chale chale re dhara – Shall we call it a bridging song between the two modes of journey?

46 ksbhatia May 14, 2018 at 11:36 pm

AK ji @44 ,45;

The word Raah truly comes in real and virtual mode . I am not sure if we can replace real raha with Dagar . I think we can have sub theme to put such close qualifying songs in a set of shelves . I was about to post….Teri rahoan mein khade hain dil tham ke….from Chhalia . Here again the word rahoan can be real or virtual . The movie however picturised taking it as actual …..a directional mis touch ?

48 AK May 15, 2018 at 7:08 am

KS Bhatiaji,
In my response to Mumbaikar8 I have mentioned that one approach is to include even virtual references. Dagar means the same as path, therefore, is completely OK.

49 Shalan Lal May 15, 2018 at 4:35 pm

Hello AK I wonder about a little part of your very good Introduction.
It is this:
महाजनो ये न गता: स पन्था:।

The right path is the one that has been trodden by the great men. But Javed Akhtar does not like to go where everyone goes; he does not like travelling on the worn-out path.

The Sanskrit quotation you have quoted has this part:- ये न गता”.

“I would like to keep the emphasis on the negative aspect of the “Path” as there is “न गता”” which means “not trodden”.

But your translation says the “right path is the one that has been trodden ” which is exactly the opposite one. The “not trodden one” then comes near to what Robert Frost wanted to say and then the meaning in his last line “And that has made all the difference” makes more clear about the strange path.

If the Pundit who composed that “Subhashit” wanted to say what you have translated then he would not have inserted the “न ” letter in his “Subhashit”.

This is just wondering about your translation and what made you to drop the “न ” out of your translation?

Bhatke huye raahi ko manzil kaise mile?
Missed all the action when I myself was a Musafir.. destination.. Bengaluru.

Tu hi aas ka taara).

Aap ki nazron ne samza…ANPADH.( Aap ki Manzil hoon main, meri manzil aap hain).
Mujhko apne gale laga lo… HUMRAHI.( Jin rahon par hanste chalo tum, phool wahi khil jaate hain,
Dum lene ko jahan rukho tum,Madhushala ban jaati hain.)…. These lovely lines were to go in my Phoolon ka Guldasta.

Uth jaag musafir bhor bhayee,
Ab rain kahan jo sovath hai.. ANKHEN DEKHI.( Lyrics…. traditional).

Main Rahi anjaan rahon ka,
O yaaron mera naam Anjaana…. ANJAANA.
Rukh jaa o jaanewali rukh jaa,
Main hoon rahi teri manzil ka… KANHAIYA.

That’s my Baker’s dozen. Just like the flowers in Hindi songs are countless and come in all hues, there are hundreds of songs on this beautiful theme.
I shall be your Humsafar on this musical journey.

53 AK May 15, 2018 at 7:28 pm

Shalan @49,
Thanks for drawing my attention. There was an inadvertent slip. It is one word येन and not ये न. येन refers to the hidden पथेन. You can think of a usage like येन केन प्रकारेण. The subhashit has been constructed in the passive voice, which is very common in Sanskrit, but would sound very awkward in Hindi or English – think of महापुरुषों के द्वारा जिस पथ से जाया गया…

KS Bhatiaji,
Song #35 is there in my post. But you have added some great songs.

Dr. Pradip Kr. Shettyji,
I am glad that you have come out of your valley of flowers to travel with us. Happy to have you as our co-traveler here.

Songs are coming in torrents; both of you (so do others) take pains to dig out the songs and post them, expecting it to be heard by some of us, if not all. As I perceive, the lyrics are very important to enjoy the songs on this theme. And most of them are philosophical too. Some of the songs demand second hearing. And I too will like to not only do justice to your efforts, but listen and get absorbed in the lyrics and music.

Let me add one more.

Thanks a lot for the exclusive posting of Saigal’s song.
How does this fare?
Ek Musaafir Aaye Bawa by Md.Farooqui, film Duniya ek Sarai (1947), lyrics Kidar Sharma, music Hansraj Behl
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=103&v=XjNbAfMQmrg
Look Bhatiaji, how one thing leads to another!
Just now I used the word fare. Then I realised that the word ‘fare’ owes its origin to the old English word ‘faran’, ‘Faran” means to journey, to travel. In modern English the word ‘fare’ is not used in that sense, yet we use the words ‘seafarers’, ‘ wayfares’,. Genrellay we say ‘farewell’ to departing persons, so this word too must have emerged from ‘Faran’. Was just sharing some of my stray thoughts that came my way..

AK
So far the famous song in Shri 420 is not mentioned
It is Mera Juta Hai Japani, Lyric Shailendra MD SJ

Just a few verses:

It is one of the great Road Songs of Indian Films. RK sang it in his Rusi Visit.

68 Shalan Lal May 16, 2018 at 3:21 pm

Many will think that “Awaraa Hoon” is not a “Path Geet”

But I think it is a Road song without mentioning the Rahi, Rasta etc.

Here are a few verses from it. This time the lyric is by Hasarat

Shalan Lal @64,
This one is from Mahabharat Van Parva 3.13.315 which comes as Yudhishthir’s reply to one of the Yaksha Prashnas: What is the right path of life?

Yudhishthir’s reply:
धर्मस्य तत्त्वं निहितं गुहायाम्
महाजनो ये न गत: स पन्था:

(The essence of Dharma is very complex, as if hidden in a cave. That path is the right path which has been taken by great men.)

I don’t know if there is any general way of finding the source of a subhashit, or if there is any good compilation of all subhashits. I remember tidbits from my school days. However, the Internet today seems to be the storehouse of everything.

Comments 64 and 72 AK ji and Shalan ji…..

There are scores of books on this subject.
I had the following-
1.Subhashit Ranakar- Krishnashastri Bhatavadekar
2. Subhashit Ratna bhandar-Narayan Acharya and
3.Sanskrit subhashit Navneet- J N Adhyatmik Trust

I may still be having these in my library. The books give details about each subhashit.

Yes ; remembering the golden old times of the mid 50s when paths were less road worthy and were fit to run only Theela Gaadis and Tongas . The Buses and Taxis were rare sight , only appearing after twenty or thirty minutes gaps. Owning Cars during those times was a status symbol and a luxury too . Most of the cars and taxis were imported or the one passed on to next of the british raj generation. Besides British cars American Cars too were present in good numbers .Most of the british cars like Morris 8 , Morris 14 and Baby morris were fitted with engines of austin of england . Indian Car….Landmaster 14 and Hindustan 14 were exact replica of corresponding Morris cars . Fiat 10 and Baby Fiat was also popular and lately joined by Standard10 ….popular with Navy officials . On American side , a number of different cars were owned by the rich and famous higher up society and higher ranked officers from the likes of External Affairs and Defence Ministries . Ford , Prefect , Desoto, Plymouth, Cheverolet , Buick were the lead runner . I still remember the perfume of the Upholstry carried by these cars .

All these cars and very primitive roads in co existence ! In those times most of the roads were single lane and looking for highways and expressways was a far cry. I know I have to follow a Pagdandi to reach for my school or to a near by market . So , urbanisation took the time forward , gearing up to match the world of today and roads now taken up to as wide as 16 to 32 lanes Expressways .

Many movies came up with the titles like ….Agra Road . Road No 303 , Burmah Road , Chennai Express etc . ….but there is one movie titled …Pagdandi made in 1947 .Hard hit fans of vintage taste would surely get surprised listening to some of the vintage rare songs….

A man with a hammer and a chisel… what image would a movie buff get? Of course,of a sculptor with his Muse, you silly! GEET GAYA PATHARON NE,NEEL KAMAL….
But let us know about a poor labourer who carved a path in a hillock single handed to reduce the distance between his unapproachable village Gehlaur and the city of Gaya, Bihar.
Yes,it is Dashrath Manjhi, The Mountain Man, modern day Shahjahan whose memorial to his wife is probably more significant than even the Taj Mahal.
A runaway from his village, Dashrath returns after eight years of hard labour in the Dhanbad coal mines, marries and settles down into a life of labour. His wife Phalguni Devi, pregnant with her second child, while climbing a hillock carrying lunch for Dashrath, slips and falls and bleeds profusely. The nearest medical facility is 70 km away. By the time she is taken there crucial time is lost and she passes away after giving birth to a baby girl.
Dashrath Manjhi is heartbroken and approaches authorities from his village Panchayat level to Delhi .Mumbai.all in vain. Vowing to cut down the ego of the mountain blocking his village’s access to civilization. With just a hammer and a chisel he starts carving a road through the mountain. Day after day, for 22 years ( 1960 to 1982), facing ridicule and discouragement, even from his own family,he toils away. He carved a path 30 feet wide,360 feet long and 25 feet deep. The distance between his village and Gaya is reduced from 55 km to 15 km.
The Government came in 4 years later (!) to make the road Pucca.
Manjhi breathed his last fighting cancer in the year 2007.
The acclaimed Kannada movie BHOOMI THAYIYA CHOCHALA MAGA,1998,by Rajendra Singh Babu, has a character,Kallappa ( Kallu is stone in Kannada) based on Dashrath Manjhi. The 2015 Ketan Mehta project, MANJHI THE MOUNTAIN MAN is a biographical based on Dashrath’s life.
O Rahi O Raahi Roshni ke Sipahi….
There would not be another song on a path/ road where the hero carves a path!

Wonderful reference . Of course one cannot argue with either Yaksh or with Dharmaraj. But then there is some truth in the line of Robert Frost as well. I wonder what answer the Yaksha would give to Robert Frost. I wonder what answer the King Vikramadity would have given to the Beatal? I think I must pause and even the Betal would go back to hang upside down on the tree after I would tell or rather read the Robert Frost poem.

Well we are not any wiser. This is a fork and each road will have its seductiveness and travelling is important as RK says:
“नादाँ हैं जो बैठ किनारे
पूछें राह वतन की – (२)
चलना जीवन की कहानी, रुकना मौत की निशानी”

Thank you very much for the names of the books. Next time I shall go the British Library I will have some thumb through this Bhandar of Subhashit. But you are a “Bhandar” yourself and why should I go to the British Library? Thank you very much indeed!

My point was to locate the dates of the Subhashit but now it is known. It is the part of Mahabharat.

The date I wanted to know because I believe that the word “महाजनो” has another meaning and not necessarily means “great persons”.

But I must not go on we are getting away from the “Raah and Raahi.

Saw this post on my sidebar a couple of days ago, but didn’t get a chance to read it until now. Great theme – and I quite like the connections between path and traveller. You have introduced me to a couple of ‘new’ songs as well.

I haven’t waded through the comments and don’t know if this has been posted yet but there is a lovely Subir Sen song from Kathputli that perhaps fits this theme: Manzil wohi hai pyar ka raahi badal gaye
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGri715PSF4

The 80s and 90s weren’t very well known for their music, but I have a soft spot for this one from Sharabi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbdRxPBxvzI

This too is from a later period than you write about, but it’s a lovely RD composition. Ye safar bahut hai kathin magar from 1942 A Love Story.

Thanks for the fabulous KL Saigal’s Punjabi ghazal. Can match with his best in Hindi/Urdu. You have added some very nice songs. I also enjoyed your dream journey into your past when life was simple, as also its alleys and narrow roads.

Dr Shetty @58,59,62, 76, 79, 80, 81, 87 and 88,
Ae kash chalte mil ke – I liked the line चाँद और मैं और तू. On a lighter vein, there was ‘Tum aa gaye ho, Noor aa gaya hai – chalo hum teenon kahin chaai pee lete hain’.

Arunji @73,
Thanks for giving the source reference.
@90, Thanks for the additional information on Mohammad Farooqui.
@91, ‘Mahajan’ as a moneylender is a modern usage. I doubt if it was ever used in this sense in the classical Sanskrit or earlier. In the Subhashit the only possible meaning is a great man or a learned man.

Venkataramanji @82,

You wrote “Venkataramanji is working on the Md who has composed the most raah, musafir safar, manzil songs”

This is not correct, to browse through all the songs from the 1930s till date is practically next to impossible.

Yes I was meticulously keeping a track of the songs posted here till the downpour of postings started. Then the “Natak at Karnataka” drew me further away and I lost track. Yet I did a quick browsing through the postings here. If the postings here are any indication, then Shankar- Jaikishan pair must be in the lead. But KA and LP can form an alliance to pip SJ to the post. Do we need a floor test?

In the meantime let us listen to some beautiful songs composed by Khayyam, I am not sure about their place in this post, but the words Raahen, Manzil etc. comes for mention in these songs.

Even after coming late, you are giving our ‘old war-horse’, Bhatiaji, a good run for the money. Looking at your indefatigable energy, I think you should have contested the recent Karnataka election. Then you would have been the most sought after person. If there are any broken bones in case of a likely fracas in tomorrow’s floor test, you could have come handy. Since all these are not exactly music to the ears, well! on to some songs,

Ms.Mumbaikar 8 @93;

Musafir movie had so many good song with salil da taking the cake giving music in this three in one movie i.e. movie having three parts all having different love stories of the past and future . A sort of cross section of moving society of that time living and leaving the house owned by David in the film . The main characters of three parts were Shekher , Dilip Kumar and Kishore Kumar . The movie had many firsts….Dilip, Lata duet ; Keshto ‘s first dance number and acting debut in hindi films ; Hrishikesh Mukerjee’s first directional debut ; Shailendra’s second or third screen appearence .

There is one beautiful worded duet song by Shailendra [ and he is enacting on screen ] …..Tedhi Medhi hum se chale saari duniya ; in the second stanza there is reference to gali gali , which I think must be accomodated as a qualifier of this theme . Listen to this song and see the invention of break dance by our own….Keshto ,the great.

Ms. Shalan Lal, Venkatraman ji @85,86;

Those born in the mid 40s , 50s and even early 60s must have really enjoyed walking thru ….Pagdandi s ….enjoying going up and coming down the uneven terrain . The junglee grass adding to the charm of the rustic walk surrounded by the uncut matching trees….mostly of Kiker varieties .

While abroad I look up to walk to such famous Trails that has been kept well by the state govt. never getting it spoiled and providing the botanical details to the visitors at many places as well . Trail to grand pa’s mountain just at tennessee border was my last of the visit to such places . It is a fun when you enjoy walking down the trail you enjoy singing as well. Return trail walk ….you have to match the breath and your Rafi’s tunes goes Talat’s way !!

Here is one of my fav. Laural and Hardy song ….Trail of the lonesome pine . The original song was recorded some time in the late 1890s or early 1900s .

I entirely agree with you. K L Saigal ‘s punjabi ghazal is sure a top of the class . He has sung one more punjabi song / ghazal…..mahi nal lagdi aakh kadi na . I am looking for some punjabi songs of vintage era sung by non punjabi ‘s . Could be only few but still interest is there to find it.

Ms. Shalan Lal, AK ji …@67,68,75;

The old RK’s movies practically had reference to raasta, manzil, safar , humsafar, dagar etc in quite a number of songs like ….

1.Mud mud ke na dekh…..zindgani ke safar mein tu akela hi nahi hai
hum bhi tere humsafar hain
2. do ….Aaye gaye manziloan ke nishan
3.Ramaiya vasta wayiaa…..rasta wohi musafir wohi

4. Patli kamar hai…………..Naya nagar nit nai dagar hai

5. Awara hun………………….Sunsan nagar anjaan dagar ka pyara hun

6. O jaane wale mudke jara dekhte jaana……..Manjil ne kahan aake
meri baat bigaari …[ this is in second stanza , not there in the movie ]

……..many more to add but enough to show.

KS Bhatiaji @108 to 112,
Tedhi medhi chale is such a fabulous song. Hearing it for the first time. Where was it hidden? Thanks a lot for posting it.

‘Rasta, musafir, manzil’ songs in RK films – nice observation. Shalan Lal too mentioned ‘Awara hun’ and ‘Mera joota hai Japani’.

TAXI TAXI
1. Jeevan mein humsafar, milte toh hain zaroor,
Par kho jaate chalke thodi door…
2. Laayi kahan ye zindagi,

JHOOTA KAHIN KA
Jeevan ke har mod par,
Mil jaayenge Humsafar,
Jo door tak saath de,
Dhoonde usi ko nazar.

MAUSAM,1976, Gulzar, Madanmohan.
1. Chadi re chadi kaisi gale mein padi..
…..
Sidhe sidhe raston ko thoda sa mod de do….
2. Rukhe rukhe se kadam rukh ke baar baar cahale.
Qarar leke tere ghar se beqarar chale..

HUM KISISE KUM NAHIN
Chand mera dil, Chandni ho tum..
… Yahi toh hai Sanam pyar ka thikana,
Main hoon,main hoon…

123 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty May 20, 2018 at 8:06 am

While posting the TAMANNA song yesterday,I suddenly realised Paresh Rawal as Tiku, the hijda/ third sex/ eunuch is probably the first full length character of the gender in our movies. Mahesh Bhatt has done a wonderful job with Rawal and Pooja Bhatt. Rawal’s sensitive portrayal of a Eunuch born to a fading Bollywood actress, Nadira in one of her last screen appearances, was devoid of any melodrama. The Eunuch, devastated by his mother’s death, brings up an abandoned girl child. Another Veteran Zohra Sehgal plays the role of the child’s grandma. The thought process led onto DARMIYAAN,1997, the Bhupen Hazarika, Kalpana Lazmi creation . Once again,a fading Bollywood actress of the 1930s,Kiron Kher,is shattered on learning her only son is an Eunuch. Living in denial, she makes the world believe Immi,Arif Zakaria,is her younger brother ( Indrani Mukherjia,in some other context!). Failing career, lover abandoning her for a younger girl etc drive her into alcoholism, oblivion and self destruction. Immi, who had moved away, returns, now with a boy child, his SON! Another fact she can not make herself understand! Finally,it is Immi who saves her. Great performance by Zakaria and Kher had done justice to the role, albeit with a little over acting.
Now , the relavant song.

Apne des mein hum hain paraye,
Duniya parayi,log yahan begana…
…..
Koi Safar,koi toh rasta,
Koi toh manzil ho….
Bhupen Hazarika ( vocals and music),Javed Akhtar.
https://youtu.be/ sjZliC1ELrM

Enjoy the song. Shall come back later to complete my discourse on Eunuchs in movies… unless someone posts a loud( or is it bold?)NOOOOO!

I agree, it is not possible for a meticulous person like you to keep track in the downpour we are experiencing, but even a quick browsing from you is welcome cause it isl much better than the aerial survey I do.

Venkataramanji @121,
Nice batting from Vintage End. Good partnership with Dr Shetty from Modern End.

Dr Shetty,
@122: To your question about Mr. Lambu, I cheated a little. The Wikipedia says the film contained a song, Yaad karun tori batiyan song composed by OP Nayyar. But the song on YT is in Suraiya’s voice. Our OP Nayyar expert Ravindra Kelkar can throw light on this. Or, was it something else you had in mind?

@123, Very sensitive description of the movies based on the transgenders. The films didn’t have much traction.

Only the first round of the Karnataka Natak is over. It was a well scripted thriller. I expect more in the following months, before 2019. Sorry to have startled you. You should have moved faster, should have learnt from the events witnessed on the TV screen for the past few days.

Many times the songs get so popular that people forget the meanings of the words and the words become only sound and miss the honey in them.

You have aptly and skill fully brought out the pearls from the shell.

Thanks again.

@128: The song has the refrain Ruk nahi sakta kabhi ye zindagi ka raasta. The picturisation shows a caravan on the move with this motivational song. Should fit with the theme.

Back to @121: Who is the lady with CH Atma in Unchi nichi hai manzil to badi door? She also deserves credit for this nice song.

You have reasons to expect more thriller before 2019. Your state WB is going to be at the vanguard.

Responding to the last part of your comment
Delhi is still far away. My comment was in reference to Karnataka. The post poll alliance has just overcome one hurdle. Now the difficult task is to tackle the internal conflicts and contradictions. I would like to mention an anecdote.

As the legend goes, Sultan Ghyasuddin Tughlaq, during his campaign in Bengal, sent a message to the saint Nizamuddin Auliya, threatening to take his life on his return to Delhi. The saint remained undeterred, smiled and pronounced in Persian, “Hunooz Dilli door ast” — “Delhi is a long way off.” As fate would have it, the sultan could not reach Delhi at all.

Of course there are no saints in Delhi now, but I am not that sure about the Tughlaqs here.

When I say SAAT HINDUSTANI,1969, what would you remember immediately? What a silly question! One would remember Amitabh Bachchan’s debut,
K A Abbas,…. some would recall Anwar Ali ( Mehmood’s brother) , Utpal Dutt and Jalal Agha. But , hardly would anyone remember the music of the movie! The film’s song Aandhi aaye ki thoofan, Mahinder Kapoor, Kaifi Azmi,J P Kaushik..won the National award for best lyrics.

https://youtu.be/ mlzQtSO9Ovc

The movie has another song that would gain entry into this theme with a Green Card. But, the lyrics, video are not available.
Ek manzil pe sab ki nigahen rahe….

J P Kaushik,is largely associated with K A Abbas movies. In Haryanvi he has worked for more than a dozen movies.A few Rajasthani and an English film ,too!(The Corner Shop).
JPK was given his first break by K A Abbas in SHEHAR AUR SAPNA.
KAA’s another film with music by JPK..
AASMAAN MAHAL.
Aye raat zara aahista guzar…..Geeta Dutt, Madhukar; Madhukar ( same one,now as lyricist),JPK.

https://youtu.be/lhrV2y40FCY.

What is interesting about the heroine and the lyricist?

138 N Venkataraman May 21, 2018 at 4:26 pm

Dr.Pradeep Kr.Shettyji @138
Thanks for mentioning Aasman Mahal. It made me remember the song ‘Main Aahe Bhar Nahi Sakta’. It was posted by Akji in ‘Songs of Atariya’. I think Arvinderji had provided the link to the song. A nice song and echoing Akji’s words it was a double Attariya song. At that time I was not aware of the name of the lyricist. Later, I came to know that the lyricist was Mazaz Lakhnavi, who also penned the very popular song Ae Gam-E-Dil Kya Karu (Thokar 1953). He does not seem to be a regular lyrics writer in Hindi films. There is also scene in Pyasa where the Nazm, Rudaad-E-Gam-E-Ulfat Unse Unase Ham Kyaa Kahate Kyun Kar Kahate, penned by Mazaz Lucknavi is recited by an on-scene poet.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eb554f9kEiw

BTW Shettyji, are you sure the lyrics for the song ‘Aye raat zara aahista guzar…’ was by Madhukar? The title credits of the film does not mention Madhukar’s name as lyricist. It seems he debuted as an actor in this film, yes he rendered a song in this film with Geeta Dutt and I found a similar name as the dance director of this film. I am not sure if they are the same person. The lyrics for all the songs, except one, were written by Ali Sardar Jafri.

Coming back to your question “What is interesting about the heroine and the lyricist?”

Are you referring to the lyricist of the film or the song mentioned by you? Anyway, I have no idea.

139 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty May 21, 2018 at 4:46 pm

N Venkatraman ji,
What is interesting about the heroine and the lyricist/ male singer of the song posted?
I seem to be asking too many questions, mostly trivia, interesting nevertheless,to a group where the’ music listening age’ of some of the Veterans must be greater than my physiological age! Of course,I am not just out of the cradle…all of 57!
Still, these little thingummies give me a high ( needed, perhaps, because I am not used to,by choice, other elements that give one a high!).
AK ji,
About the common thread of the four 1964 movies+ the Mr Lambu… I am waiting. Here, too, the first one is a trivia (invented by me), but the second one is a very significant one.

140 AK May 21, 2018 at 5:47 pm

My guess about the first one is that all the films were nominated for the Filmfare Award for the best music, which went to LP for Dosti. For the second one, please see my comment at @125.

Well, the first authentic sports related Hindi movie is,to the best of my knowledge,HIP HIP HURRAY,1984.
Debutant director Prakash Jha,who was unable to raise funds for DAMUL, made this with finances from Manmohan Shetty and Pradeep Uppoor, the backbone of the New Wave movies. Raj Kiran,as a High school football coach, turned in a brilliant performance. Wordsmith Gulzar handled the writing department ( screenplay, dialogues, lyrics) ,as usual, was, superb. Music is by Vanraj Bhatia, the favourite of Bengal,Nihlani, Kundan Shah et al.

Almost correct about the 1964 movies. Shall bore you all with further details later!

145 ksbhatia May 21, 2018 at 11:46 pm

Dr. Shetty ji ;

You are perfectly right . K A Abbas movie themes required a very down to earth music director ……specialising in low tone songs and J P Kaushik did fab. job and the combo carried on . Aasman Mahal impressed me a lot.

Like this combo the other most tied up were Shyam Benegal , Govind Nahalani and Vanraj Bhatia ……a passionate film maker combo’s of the likes of Swiss film directors ; indulging in every minute detail capturing frames in perfection by Govind Nahlani , a master’s touch of a great cinematographer and very well matching music by Vanraj Bhatia. Vanraj Bhatia’s music in every film is class in itself . Whenever I listen to Naushad’s music , my mind goes in auto mode to turn to Vanraj’s music and songs. Yes, Vanraj’s background music I am refering to ! Listen to party scenes’ background music in Benegal films . Those interested in Symphonies they are surely to get a good listening pleasure . For songs….Tumahare bina jee na lage ghar mein…..says it all.

Ms . Shalan Lal, Ms. Mumbaikar 8 , Venkatraman ‘ji, AK ‘ji ;

I am glad all of you liked the ….Tedi Tedi hum se phire….song from Musafir . A perfect setting for the gali gali and nukaad atmosphere . I am , however surprised that this song went un noticed when I posted it in one of the article by Mr. D P Rangan . There too I gave my observations relating to the tilt of the earth’s axis , its spin as of Top [ lattoo] that we used to play when we all were young ; and other such geographic details.

Venkatraman ji , some time a trail or a pagdandi takes you no where and one gets lost easily . Life is full of …bhuul bhuuliyan…and the manzil gets lost . Listen to the Shailendra’s classic nukkad song . Each word is worth weighing in gold .

Th e Journey began with an interesting prologue, with assured milestones ‘stations’ to visit on the way.
But the co-travelers were not mere passengers. They have been adding more and more interesting destinations, at a frenzied pace.
I would also chip in without much ado:

Aye Mere Hamsafar RoK Apni Nazar Na dekh Is Kadar, Ye Dil Hai Bada Besabar – Chhabili – Nutan
Co-travelers glance can be so unnerving…
https://youtu.be/HVjBE66NWmY

A song that has similar starting lyrics. and involves Nutan, this time as a co-traveler whose glance steals the heart
Aye Mere hamsafr, kya tujhe hai khabar, mera dil le gayi mera dil le gayi, teri pehli nazar.. – Malkin – Talat Mahmood

You know it, I like Bahar song. SDB had the knack of extracting the best out of his singers.
I have one Talat Manzil song from Mai Suhagan Hoon Lachchhiram Asad Bhopali YE KIS MANZIL PE LE AAYEE MERI BADQISMATI

AK,
Still awaiting your verdict @130 Yeh jo zindagi hai from Earth 1947.

Meena Kumari Khayyam album has two songs that I think can qualify,
First one has rahguzar so no issue
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pw0wBQ_Xncs
Second one does not have “humsafar” in lyrics but implies that like chand aur aasman all “humsafars” are tanha tanha.
Would you clear it?

N Venkatraman ji, I may have been misled by some sites about Madhukar being the lyricist. You must be right. Still, there is something interesting about him!

If not posted already,I am giving you three superb vintage era songs.

Mumbaikar8 @130 and 152,
Heard the song Ye jo zindagi hai for the first time. AR Rahman sound is very obvious, but it is surprising how this song has remained hidden. It grows on you, there is something deeply charming about the song. The refrain is clearly a ‘rasta’ song, it talks about the uncertainty in the life’s journey. But the ‘antara’s do not seem to carry the theme. The refrain is in chorus, without any distinct dominant voice. Therefore, unless you listen carefully, it may not impact you as a ‘rasta’ song. But forget the nitpicking, it is a superb song. Thanks for introducing me to the song.

I am still curious and waiting for the information on Madhukar.

The three songs you have posted are indeed superb, especially I liked the duet chahe kitni kathin dagar ho very much. Thanks for posting them. However, the first song from Balam (1949), O pardesi musafir kise karta hai ishaare was posted by Gaddeswarupji (@20) and Akji has expressed his views about the song @ 22.

I would wait for the “specialties”. You make your postings interesting with additional narratives and trivia. You have a knack for digging out those information. Thanks once again.

There is a Salil Chowdhury song that was sung by Lata in Pinjre ke Panchi that he himself produced. Manzil teri khoj mein…. It has interesting interludes some of which segue into chord progressions used in other songs like Saathi re…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nX108LeMIUI

However I much prefer the Bengali version of this song sung by Madhuri Chattopadhyay… The arrangement, preludes interludes are different and Madhuri’s voice to me has more weight.

The Talat song from Malkin…Aye mere humsafar kya tujhe hai khabar….is good . I heard it for the first time . Took opportunity to hear rest of talat’s songs from the same film .

Nutan’s song from Chabili , I did posted earlier . This and other song….lehroan pe laher… are based on western hollywood movies songs and Snehel Bhadkar did full justice making the interludes that matched the song.

SSW @ 58
You bring in a welcome diversion to the discussion. True, the Bengali version by Madhuri Chaterjee and the accompanying arrangements are fantastic. Salail choudhury’s poetry matches his melody and composition. Most probably he penned the lyrics in the 60s.

At the outset it may sound like a romantic verse, but it is not. It seems, the poet addresses the Supreme Being. He says when the spring of one’s life comes to an end, when the outward world can no longer hold his interests, he requests the Supreme Being to revisit him again and reset the discordant notes. The last stanza of the Bengali version too mentions life’s journey.

Nijeri majhare nami,
Ogo antarayami,
Haraye gechhi aami,
Door durgamo path aamar,
Jatra shuru, kaal nei thamaar
Ei jowar seshe bhatar taane,
Bhirhbe tori tomar kule.

A very rough translation,

Oh lord of my heart, plunging within
I am lost into my inner-self;
Distant and difficult is my path;
The journey has commenced, no time for respite,
At the end of the flow and ebb of tide,
my boat will be secured at your bank.

This my best attempt in bring out the essence of the song.

Being a Salil Choudhry aficionado, you must have heard the song “Oi Je Sabuj Bono Bithika” by Madhuri Chatterjee. I would like to have your opinion on her rendition of this song and the interlude in particular.

Much after the introduction of Railways, many famous iconic trains were introduced. The famous Toofan Express of the East Indian Railway, was a daily express train between Calcutta and Delhi, with a restaurant car. Introduced on 1st June 1930, the Toofan Express was the most popular fast train between Calcutta and Delhi. It is now called the Udyan Abha Toofan Express, 13007/13008. Actually, there never was a train called Toofan Mail. Officially, it was always Toofan Express. It was the influence of Bollywood that reduced the Toofan Express to Toofan Mail.

Wadia Movietone produced “Toofan Mail” in 1932 and “Toofan Express” in 1938, the former being a silent film. In 1934, Ranjit Studios produced “Toofan Mail” under Jayant Desai’s direction. In 1935, a film by the name “The Return of the Toofan Mail”, directed by R S Choudhury, was released. Again in1942 and in 1955, two movies by the name “Return of the Toofan Mail” and “Toofan Mail” were released. The former had 10 songs and the music director was Gyan Dutt. Two songs of 1955 version (MD Nisar) are available on YT, but none of the songs are relevant to theme under discussion.

One song that would be relevant to this post is Kanan Devi’s song from the 1942 film Jawab, Toofan Mail, Duniya Yeh Duniya Toofan Mail.

Duniya ye duniya, tufaan mail by Kanan Devi, film Jawab (1942) , lyrics Pt.Madhur, music Kamal Dasgupta

koi kahan ka ticket kataata
ek aata hai ek hai jaata
koi kahan ka ticket kataata
ek aata hai ek hai jaata
sabhi musafir bichhad jayenge
sabhi musafir bichhad jayenge
pal bhar ka hai mel
tufaan mail
duniya ye duniya, tufaan mail

jo jitni punji hai rakhte
usi mutaabik safar vo karte
jo jitni punji hai rakhte
usi mutaabik safar vo karte
jeevan ka, jeevan ka hai bhed batati
jeevan ka hai bhed batati

Three nice additions. I think Shailendra is the lyricist of the song Aawara Ae Mere Dil jaane kahan teri manzil.

Same goes for Toofan Mail, Duniya ye duniya. Your transcript of the lyrics makes a very interesting reading; it echoes all the thoughts I mentioned in the post.

169 SSW May 24, 2018 at 12:03 am

Mr.Venkatraman @163
“Oi je sobuj bono..” is a magnificent composition, and Madhuri has sung it amazingly. To pull of such a song is not easy, firstly the range is considerable and the notes are tricky. In the mukhda itself you notice how she has to bring her voice low in “tire oi banke”. And in the antara the notes move across a span of nearly two and a half octaves , when she sings ” taar prangane chroraye” at nearly the top of the register there are intricate movements from one note to the next. Do you hear the piano behind her voice during those pieces , it is a great accompaniment.? There are beautiful accordion runs in the song. As for the interludes and a smidgin of the melody it is inspired by the first movement of Beethoven’s 6th Symphony.
See here at 0:49, I found an old video of Bernstein conducting , he would have been 100 this year .

Venkatraman ji ;

A very fine grip over the subject which has come to an interesting stage . Like AK , Myself too is swayed by your brief travelogue .

You remind me of many stunt films of the 30s, 40s and 50s . Off and on I look for such movies for the Art and production details like sets , music prevalent during those times and of course acting and stunts as well. In such films the trick photography is the main attraction and Basant Pictures production house were the one which were well aided by famous Mistry Brothers……Babu Bhai Mistry the trick phtographer . In earlier movies foreign specialised cinematographers from Germany were also sought after .

Your reference to locomotives reminds me of the famous stunts of Buster Keaton …..saving a child laid on the track , making himself sturdy right in front of the running engine , picking the child and taking him in his arms. Now this scene I remember to have seen in one of the stunt movie in my childhood . It could be Kaptain Sheroo, Captain Azaad or Captain Kishore . Just now I am remembring the stunts of the famous hunterwali…..Nadia …..an actress that made the name of Basant Movietones. ……running top the roof of train bogies fighting and jumping from one bogie to another.

Continuing for some more songs…..

AKji,

Canasyaji in a recent post had mentioned ‘By the time a post is a century old it tends to lose focus, with songs on related/adjacent themes, subthemes and bylanes.’ We may stray into bylanes, rest at places, par manzil tak pahuch ne ke liye maarg par aana zaroori hai.

Thanks for the appreciation. It is my humble opinion that unlike the post like Tasveer, where the emphasis was more or less on the particular word (extended to similar words), this post is theme based, with greater emphasis on the thought mentioned by you in the introductory write-up. And going through the lyrics is important and stimulating. Not totally familiar with many Urdu and Hindi words and the nuances of the language, (yet ) it is a pleasurable learning experience and repeated listening helps to understand the essence of the lyricist’s imagination and inspiration.

I should thank you for bringing up a lyricist oriented post. We should have more of such article and theme based posts, which will give some food for thought.

Having said that, just adhering strictly to the theme may not be possible and may make the discussion somewhat somber, some allowance should be acceptable. That brings variety to the discussion and a broader participation.

Yes, I cannot agree more. Outstanding rendition and splendid composition. You did not disappoint me. You were not expected to. Your technical embellishments add to my listening pleasure. Thanks too for the link to Leonard Bernstein’s video. My late night yesterday ended listening to piece.

I am posting another composition of Salil Choudhury, which I suppose will go with theme.

In late 80s or early 90s Salil choudhury asked Yoesh Goud, his old comrade, to translate in Hindi some of his early creations. The songs were rendered by Salil’s own team and recorded and telecast by the Doordarshan. The original Bengali song ‘O Alor Patho Jatri E Je Ratri Ekhane Themo Na’ was written and composed by Salil Choudhury in 1949. I am certain that you will be aware of the details; hence I am not going further into it.

176 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty May 26, 2018 at 7:15 pm

N Venkatraman ji,
I am sitting upon several good songs perfectly fitting the theme. But your mentioning of the old Comrades Salil da and Yogesh Gaud set me thinking out of the box because I was able to recall half a dozen songs from this combination.
The land of Comrades other than Salil da’s West Bengal and Tripura,of course,is my neighbouring state , God’s own country. The only Communist ruled state of India today.
Salil da’s entry into South Indian movies was with the 1965 Malayalam movie CHEMMEEN( Malayalam for prawns) , about the life and love of a fisherman folk based on Thakazhi ShivaShankar Pillai’s novel of the same name. ( He later went on to win the nation’s highest literary award, the Jnanapeetha, for his seminal work Kayar(in the year 1980).
CHEMMEEN,1965,won the Best film ( President’s Gold Medal) award. At Cannes film festival,it won the best cinematography award and at the Chicago international film festival, a certificate of merit.
The songs from the movie are evergreen and are loved by the Gen X people, too, especially the Jesudas number Kadalinakkara… and, the Manna da beauty,Manasa maine…
Now,at last (!), the relavance for us… The movie was dubbed into Hindi ,1990, CHEMMEEN LAHAREN,and,Salil da used the original tunes with new voices. Lyrics… Yogesh. The film , based on the fishermen, the moving boats, the movement of the sea waves… should have a connection to our theme, right?
The only puzzle for me is why Jesudas and Manna da, who were singing for Salil da then ,and later, too, were not used! One more ‘ if only..!’
CHEMMEEN… https://youtu.be/ Qv5p8OwwbYE

CHEMMEEN LAHAREN… https://youtu.be/ 91GviqRBksc
https://youtu.be/ OjGTVCSTewU

Mind you, the latter hold no candle to the original beauties!
I shall present several Salil Chowdhury_ Yogesh_ Travel songs tomorrow.
Happy sailing on the musical waves and may your Sahil lead you all safely to your Manzil!

178 Ashwin Bhandarkar May 28, 2018 at 12:15 am

Totally missed this post for some reason.

Here’s an Anilda-Lata-Prem Dhawan classic, which has 2 versions, both of which can be found in the link:

‘Ik pal ruk jaana’ from ‘Raahi’ (1953)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ym8RGxWBYTU

179 Ashwin Bhandarkar May 28, 2018 at 12:40 am

While it is the norm for the naayikas in khayal bandishes to implore clouds, crows and coyals (pardon the unconventional spelling and the resultant deliberate alliteration) to take messages to their lovers, it does occur to the occasional pragmatic naayika to hand this responsibility over to itinerant ‘pathiks’, as in these two examples:

1. In the well-known Gaud Sarang drut khayal, ‘Piyu pal na laagi mori akhiyaan’, the antara begins with ‘Veer pathikwa le ja sandeswa’. Here is a rendition (it begins at 0.44 with the antara beginning at 3:06) by Ulhas Kashalkar:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zE4RmdtMAE

2. Fast forward to 17:26 to listen to ‘Le ja re ja re pathikwa, itna sandeswa piya ko’, a drut bandish in Raga Bihag composed by C.R.Vyas, rendered by Veena Sahasrabuddhe:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6DlmUaxnhQ

BTW, isn’t it intriguing that the English ‘path’ and the Sanskrit/Hindi ‘path’ mean the same thing?

180 Ashwin Bhandarkar May 28, 2018 at 12:50 am

It is well known that Pt.Kumar Gandharva created what he called ‘dhun ugam’ ragas from folk tunes. One of them was ‘Raahi’. Here is a recording of Kumarji himself rendering this raga:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5d56H1HEyI

181 SSW May 28, 2018 at 7:55 pm

Ashwin @179, the origin of path could come from Proto-Indo-European, the Avestan word to tread or way is “panta” is related to “panthah” or way in Sanskrit and “pent” in old German. The Gaud Sarang by Pt.Ulhas is lovely.

Hearing the songs of Son of India after a long time. The film was a box office flop. But the songs were good. Thanks for the post.

Another week to go for the completion of the 8th year of SoY. A new year, yet another new journey; or the old journey, continued with a new vigour? Till then this journey continues, we can revisit small towns & metros, go around the world, indulge in some parodies, we can listen to the songs of the mortal stars, mesmerize ourselves with Talat or Bulo C rani…… so many options. You or on 82, another 18 to go to touch another personal milestone. Let us celebrate the last week of SoY’s 8th year with aplomb.

Mon cholo nijo Niketane is a Bengali devotional song written by Brahmo Samaji Ajyodyanath Pakrashi.
In 1881, when Narendranath Datta (birth name of Swami Vivekananda) met Shree Ramakrishna Paramahansa for the first time at Surendranath Mitra’s Kolkata residence,he sang this along with other songs. Swami Vivekananda continued to sing this on several occasions even later, and this was one of his favourite songs.
O my mind, let us return to our original abode….

The song is sung by almost every noted Bengali singers and some others as well.
It features in
SWAMI VIVEKANANDA,1998,The award winning G V Aiyyar movie ( Salil Chowdhury) that fetched National award for Mithun Chakraborty’s portrayal of Shr

Mumbaikar ji,
Nice song. Gulzar writing for daughter Meghana…. her third film after FILHAAL and TALWAR.
That makes me mention JEENE KI RAAH.
1. Ek Banjara gaaye…
….hum sab jeenewalon ko Jeene Ki Raah bataye.
2. Chanda ko doondne sabhi taaren nikal pade… galiyon mein woh…
….
Phoolon ke badle kanton pe chalna pade unhe.
(My second favourite tear jerker songs of the childhood!… first being…Aaj kal mein dal gaya….BETI BETE… Also has..kaun aayega idhar, kis ki raah dekhe hum…..)
3.Aa meri humjoli aa…
….Baagon mein baharon mein,
Galiyon mein,chaubaron mein….
4. Aane se uski aayee bahaar…
….maujon ki rawaani hai!
Of course,I would consider only 1 and 2 as relavant.

198 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty June 1, 2018 at 9:40 pm

Yesterday, visited my wife’s ancestral home in Kumble Kasaragod district of Kerala for a religious ceremony. Visited after a long time. My wife’s forefathers were zamindars and minor Royalty. The palanquin there is in a fairly good condition and occupies the same position on a wall in the courtyard of the haveli. Immediately brought to my mind the BALIKA BADHU song…
Doli mein sawaar Sajni ka pyaar…..RDB,
Anand Bakshi ,RDB.
There are hundreds of doli songs and quite a few of them relavant to our theme. Still,I had to remember this!
https://youtu.be/ C4FjjQsAbll

Then I remembered
Jagat Musafirkhana laga hai aana jaana..
The Bhupinder version in the film,as well as the longer Anand Bakshi version. Why was it recorded?!?
https://youtu.be/ pMr_R4gly5w
https://youtu.be/ xdTkVmGDbel

When I went to YouTube for watching the latter,it prompted me to watch
Jisko tune ghar samja Ye duniya Musafirkhana hai….
SURANG,1953, Manna Dey, Sulochana Kadam,Shevan Rizvi, ShivaRam.
https://youtu.be/ vbcxJhqRa1U

199 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty June 1, 2018 at 9:46 pm

The above mentioned palanquin was last used by my late mother in law’s elder sister… for her marriage in the year 1946, and her subsequent visits to the Maike, for deliveries etc, till 1957. Since her two younger sisters were much junior to her and got married much later ( 1958& 60), and the times were a changing, they never experienced the Doli ki sawaari!

Dr.Pradeep Kr.Shettyji,
@194 & 195
Thanks for reviving the memories and the songs of Swami Vivekananda.

Ajyodyanath Pakrashi was the assistant and disciple of Debendranath Thakur (father of Rabindranath Thakur). He passed away in the year 1874.
Before meeting Ramakrishna Pramahamsa (Gadadhar Chatterjee) , Narendranth associated himself with Brahmo Samaj when he was studying in Scottish Church College 1881-84. Brahmo Samaj was an a religious organization of that time. He often attended the meetings of Brahmo Samaj. His initial beliefs were shaped by Brahmo concepts.

Mumbaikar8 @ 196,
Thanks a lot for sharing the Raazi song. Other songs of the film, such as Dilbaro also seems to have the theme of journey. Of course, in this film the journey is on two different levels.

Ashwin Bhandarkar ji @209;

Thanks for the iconic Bob Dylan’s song . Such songs do come up in every era….a sort of a beautiful reminder of the good old past. Yes; In my career I have designed many Bridges over the spillway gates of large dams , the rigid & flexible roads ; but myself being the lover of country side , the walk and drive I enjoy the most is thru country roads. Its not just one enjoy the nature and beautiful landscapes….its the chirping of birds that adds to the music behind the scenes.

A fav. song from my side ….

Country Roads take me home…..by John Denver

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTeUdJky9rY

This song I have kept in my heart . I have spent about three months in one of the best locations in colorado ….as trainee at USGS under US Aid prog. ….Denver, Golden, Aspen, Colorado Springs , continental divide of rocky mountains , garden of the gods , grand canyon ….etc. Though many visuals entertain you on YT. but the scenic and rustic beauty is different thru eyes . It is as good as looking of beautiful eyes of others !

Everyone reluctantly agrees and gets ready to go to Rampur as per Sadhna’s wish. So,I will post some songs from these.

Kalpana Lazmi, Bhupen Hazarika project RUDAALI,1993, based on Mahashweta Devi’s short story on the professional mourners of Rajasthan was a beautiful movie earning the National award for best actress, very deservingly, for Dimple Kapadia ( also best art director_ Samir Chanda and best costume designer_ Simple Kapadia.)
On the first hearing itself, the music made me exclaim’ WOW!’ Gulzar, Bhupen Hazarika have created magic!
The jewel in the crown, the rare gem, three versions….Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Bhupen Hazarika… everyone unique in it’s own way.
Samay o dheere chalo,
Bhuj gayi raahon se chaaon,
Door hai, door hai,Pee ka gaaon,
Dheere chalo….
( I know only Tu is tarah se meri zindagi mein shamil ho as another example of a triple song. Any others?)

Jhooti mooti mitwa aavan bole,
Bhadon bole kabhi sawan bole…. Lata.
…. curiously meaningful lyrics… Vintage Gulzar…
O mori Chandrama teri Chandni ang jalaaye,
Teri oonchi atari, maine pankh liye khatwaye( will translate roughly..
O Moon, you are perched high above,
Can’t reach you since I have had my wings cut…. I could decipher this only after repeated hearings. It was played ad nauseum (!) on my car stereo for weeks after it’s launch!)

Maula o maula… Bhupen Hazarika.
….
Gol hai gol hai raasthe ke pahiye.

I know I am going overboard, but it’s one of my favourite albums, and, Bhupen da’s best Hindi album in my opinion.

Ustad Rashid Khan with Usha Uthup? Yes! And,a good song, too!
Listen to the title song of the movie CITY LIGHTS,2014.
Rashmi Singh,Jeet Ganguly.
Bhage bhage bhage manwa…
…..
Yahan hai andhera, ujala,
Ye hai ek makdi ka jaala,
Raftaar se lad raha Caravan….

How many Hindi songs will have the word Makdee in them? Not a handful,I am sure!
Vishal Bhardwaj’s MAKDEE… with Shabana Azmi as a pugnacious witch…did it have one?!?

235 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty June 5, 2018 at 6:16 am

Oh! Of course the title song!
Makdee ke ghar mein koi nahin jaaye…!
You should listen to the other songs to believe what wonders the Gulzar ,Vishal Bhardwaj combination can create! Gulzar ,RDB…a terrific Jodi, yes! But the times allowed them to experiment only to a certain extent. On reading the lyrics of the lovely IZAAJAT number Mera kuchh saamaan tumhare paas pada hai…RDB quipped, ” Next you will ask me to set a time for the headlines of Times Of India!” But listen to the kasai Naseer bhai singing to the chicken on the slaughter table…..
Ushtare se naai,chaku se kasai
Kaate na toh kya karega bhai?
…He even goes lyrical about the beauty of the murgi and how she is well groomed without applying oil to her colourful hairs! Whacky, you say? Yes, and joyful!

IJAAZAT,1987.
Asha Bhonsle and Gulzar… National awards….Mera Kuch saamaan. For Gulzar, Filmfare award, too.
How I like the songs of the movie…all 4 of them, all Asha solos.
The movie unfolding at a waiting room of a railway station on a rainy night… journey of love, betrayal, separation, moving on… journey of life itself!

1. Choti si kahani se,
Baarishon ke paani se,
Saari vaadi bhar gayi
….

Dil mein gile bhi the,
Pehle mile bhi the,
Milke paraye the,
Do humsaye the….

2. Katra Katra milti hai,
Katra Katra jeene do,
Zindagi hai,…behne do,
Pyasi hoon main pyasi rehne do…na.
…..
Halki halki kohre ki dhunwen mein,.
Shayad aasmaan tak as gayi hoon,
…..
O dekho kahan tak as gayi hoon….

Time to go! Morning rounds… the patients you meet are travellers on varied paths, seldom smooth ones, usually bumpy, arduous, difficult terrains… sadly, many a traveller unable to reach his destination! But, however much the obstacles on their paths,a good doctor tries hard to make them believe the destination is reachable, and goads them along… always being their Humsafar, till the very end,be it a happy one or a tragedy!
So long mere Humsafars! Did I get too philosophical? Bear with me,as you all do, always…. throughout my short journey on the blog.

A traveller who doesn’t want to reach his destination!

The lyrics of ‘Jeevalaga’, a Marathi song penned by Shanta Shelke, set to tune by Hridaynath Mangeshkar, and sung very movingly by Asha, are the outpourings of a person weary of (the journey of) life.

The meaning of the lyrics can be found here:
http://aahatanaahat.blogspot.com/2009/02/jivalaga-rahile-re-door-ghar-maaze.html

I always thought that the Raga was Puriyadhanashree but a friend told me that Hridaynath had stated in an interview that the song is in Raga Shree-Gauri. Page 199 of ‘Swar Samrat Deenanath Mangeshkar’, a biography in Hindi of Master Deenanath by Vandana Ghangurde states that it is based on a bandish ‘Hun jo gayi’ in this raga (see https://books.google.co.in/books?id=GkNqCwAAQBAJ&pg=PA199&lpg=PA199&dq=shree-Gauri+jivalaga&source=bl&ots=y8S_0euHE-&sig=NcHKxNfVLj6yfpNCgs0e8Gon2cs&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj4zdC73cbbAhWBsY8KHYOoDSkQ6AEIJjAA#v=onepage&q=shree-Gauri%20jivalaga&f=false)

Hridaynath recycled the tune for the Hindi ‘O baawari’:

Gems in ocean and astro material up there on moon and mars are all priceless . The Voyager that carried the Golden records is a straight example ……the records still there in universe ! . Geologists too get some deep hidden unknown material on excavations . Civil Engineers gets geological surprises while boring and excavating tunnels and huge openings in hills and mountains for seating underground turbines of the power houses.

Results are there whenever intentions are honest. And Honesty in Professionalism is a prerequisite condition to achieve success . Let we all do what world want us to do.

AK ji , Venkatraman ji , Ms. Mumbaikar 8 ;

Whenever I listen to a beautiful song or ghazal of golden or vintage era of radio days , my mind goes to the charms of beautiful wooden textured radios that prevailed before entry of onslaught of transistor radios. A big wooden cabinet casing fitted with stout dials and big displayed radio waves length were the in things of the lives of the mid 40s thru 60s . Proudly known as tube radios also , they were the real luxury of those times . These wooden cased radios had some nice sound that even minor sound outputs could be heard from far away .

Fashion changed and small radios emerged with piano finished shining cabinets of the likes of those made by Phillips of Holland . The large shinning record changer and radio cabinets too changed into smaller versions . So much changed thereafter that we all have seen . People now hear music using the ear buttons of their mobiles. Of these people , I some time think , wheather they really are enjoying music or is it a glamour parade alone !

For me ; I still crave to listen those beautiful Ghazals and songs of those times on the vintage wooden tube radios of the likes of…….

Ulfat ki nai manzil ko chala….Iqbal Bano….Ghazal…..Lyrics , Qateel Shafai….MD, Inayat Hussain

KS Bhatiaji,
Journey with you into nostalgia is such a pleasure. ‘The large shining record changer’ – these were grand items and were called ‘Radiogram’. It was a combination of a ‘tuner’ and a ‘record changer’. They denoted new class, just as the grand piano was the old class. Now we are into the age of nanotechnology, and rightly so, to fit into our nano-apartments.

Ulfat ki nayi manzil ko chala is an. outstanding ghazal. Even more vintage were Kamla Jharia and Firoza Khanum.

I am glad that you enjoyed the Ghulam Ali’s Ghazal Musafir Chalte Chalte Thak Gayaa Hai, Safar jaane abhi kitna pada hai.

Enjoyed listening to the song Saigal’s Bahut Uss Gali Ke. Thanks for posting it. Andhe jahaan ke andhe raaste, jaaye to jaaye kaha….ae gam ke maaro manzil wahi hai, dum ye tute jaha. Wondeul song, picturised on Agha. A minor error, the song is from Patita (1953) and not from Daag (1952). Copy-paste error. Hume un rahoan pe chalna hai, another nice posting. Both Subir Sen and Aarati Mukherjee could not leave a lasting impression in Hindi films. Gar heh zameen nahin mera aasman to hai, nice wordings, good rendition. . Thanks a lot for all the additions.

Thanks posting some wonderful songs. I am putting my observations/ comments. It may be known to you.
@248
Teri galiyon main hum aaye is a lovely duet. It was Antara Choudhury’s first song and she was only seven years old then. Thanks for posting it.

You must be aware that there are two more versions of this song. The tune was first used in the 1975 Malayalam film Raagam, a duet by K J Yesudas and S Janaki. Later in 1990, he used the tune for Bengali basic song, ’Janam Janamer Saathi’ sung by Antara Choudhury again and she was a 20 years lady.. I am posting the song here.

Jiwalaga Rahile Re Door is another gem of a song. Although I have heard it before, I did not know it was an expression of a person weary of (the journey of) life. This phase of life comes to every human being. Thanks for posting the lyrics and the meaning of the songs. The hindi version O baawari was equally good.

Salil Choudhury, on hearing the Marathi version was so moved that he wanted to do a Bengali version of the song. Salil Choudhury wrote the lyrics maintain the sentiment of the original version. The song was recorded in 1967 and rendered by Asha Bhosle again. I guess the Marathi version was recorded sometime in 1966.

I understand that Raag Poorya Dhanasree, Raag Sree and Raag Gauri belongs to Poorvi That. Just for my further understanding, how does Raag Shree-Gauri differs from Poorya Dhanasree?

Salil Choudhury also wrote lyrics for the Bengali Version of Hi Vaat Dur Jate (@252)

Venkatramanji @263

I had not known about the Malayalam/Bengali versions of the songs that I had posted. Thanks for sharing them.

I do not have the expertise (and this is no expression of false modesty) to give a comprehensive response to your question regarding the differences between Shree-Gauri and Puriyadhanashri, but I can easily identify phrases in the song that clearly smack of Shree or of Gauri of the Purvi thaat* (there is another Gauri, which is of the Bhairav thaat). Laying out an elaborate analysis of this song may not be of interest to most readers, but if you are interested, we can certainly take the discussion offline.

* – According to a website, the Gauri of the Purvi thaat is nothing but a ‘jod’ raga of Bhairav thaat ki Gauri and Shree, which means that Shree-Gauri = Gauri of Purvi thaat itself, rather than a jod of Shree and Purvi thaat ki Gauri, as one would tend to believe! I have a CD lying somewhere of one of Pt.K.G.Ginde’s lec-dems on Gauri, in which he talks about 6 (!) prakaaars of the raga – must listen to it once again with more attention.

Is manzil par milane wale us manzil par kho jaane hai ”

No , no chance of ” kho jaane hai ”
Because Ak G is here, reminding everyone
” Chalate chalte mere ye geet yaad rakhana ,
Kabhi alvida na kehna ,
KABHI ALVIDA NA KEHNA ”

Thnx AK G for creating such a nice blog.

With regards ,
Pramod Godbole.

Mr Godbole,
Welcome to SoY and thanks a lot for your generous words. The caravan keeps growing. I hope the silent humsafars also start expressing their joy of the journey.

Main hoon rail gaadi, mujhe dhakka lagaa!
Mama Mia poon poon…pyar ka gaadi te chalao, accelator aur badhao…
Meri engine garam hua re, jaldi oil daalo…
No music lover would post these Travel/ Vehicle related songs, whatever the compulsion!
But, sample these lines from a Vintage movie….of 1951,no less!

Dil ka engine seetiyan maare
Aajaa sajan aajaa line clear hai…

Aankhon ka signal karthi hai ishaare..

Jawani ka Thoofan Mail chhuk chhuk chhuk kare hai..
….
Guard ka dil gori tum pe as gaya..
….
Mujhko woh dhaaga de jo break mein chhupa gaye..

Clean fun, harmless flirting.. naughty, but not gross.

Guess the singer?
Shamshad Begum? Geeta Dutt? Asha Bhonsle?
No Sir! Lata ji with Chitalkar!
USTHAD PEDRO,Raja Mehdi Ali Khan,C Ramchandra.

Dr Shetty,
Heard for the first time. I had a feeling Lata Mangeshkar’s voice does not fit in this song. This needed Shamshad Begum, but C Ramchandra was by then besotted with her.

279 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty June 21, 2018 at 8:40 pm

AK ji,
Accidental discovery!
I have, all my life, restrained myself from commenting on Lata Mangeshkar_ C Ramchandra relationship.
But, believe me, the innocent flirting reminded me of the same!
Now, onto someone whose name was never dragged into any controversy or gossips relating to the matters of hearts…Rafi Saab.
RAKHI,1962,Rafi, Rajinder Kishan ,Ravi.
The South production that won Ashok Kumar his First Filmfare Best Actor award… next being the one for AASHIRWAD,1969 that fetched him the National Award, too. In 1966,he had won the Filmfare Best Supporting actor award for AFSANA.

Assuming that this lovely song/s isn’t posted, I am presenting…
Aye dil kahan teri manzil
Na koyee Deepak hai
Na koyee Thara
Gum hai Zameen
Door Aasmaan….
MAYA,1961, Majrooh Sultanpuri,Salil Chowdhury.
I think I have a Triple song on my hands.
The Dwijen Mukherjee ( sounds uncannily like Hemant Kumar) and Lata versions are easily accessible on YouTube. But I am sure there is a duet version by them as well.
https://youtu.be/S199DH_hDfU( Dwijen Mukherjee)

Also from MAYA the evergreen
Jaa re jaa re ud jaare panchi….
Lata…
…Na daali rahi,na kali
Ajab gham ki aandhi chali
Udhi dukh ki dhool rahon mein..

Rafi….
Sanam tu chal diya rasthaa mere bina
Toh kya main reha nahin sakta tere bina

A rare tragic number on Mehmood.

Taqdeer kahan le jaayegi
Maloom nahin, maloom nahin.
Lekin hai yakeen
Aayegi manzil..

Mushkil hai dagar
Lamba hai safar….
.
Rafi ,Asha…
Yahi hai woh Sanjh aur Savera…
….
Janam Janam se andhera tha meri rahon mein…

AK,
This sher conceptually different but like the outlook 🙂
क्यूँ ज़रूरी है किसी के पीछे पीछे हम चलें
जब सफ़र अपना है तो अपनी रवानी चाहिए

Mumabikar8,
This fits perfectly. The poet does not want to follow someone else, but chart his own course. Nice one.

Came across this song last night while doing a search for the late Sushila Rani Patel’s rendition of Raga Jait on YouTube (which I did not find):

‘Gulnaar joban raar machaaye galiyan ma’ from ‘Gwaalan'(1946) – (Pt.Indra/Hansraj Behl/Sushila Rani Patel)

The song is based on Raga Sarang.

Ashwin Bhandarkar @ 286

It is very good of you to mention Sushila Rani Patel song from “Gwaalan” 1946. She had sweet voice. Once I went to see the Girnar, herself and talk about some issues of “Film India” when she was doing her morning Riyaz,

I waited her to finish and congratulated for her very good voice. It was “exciting talk” with her.

The film “Gwaalan” and her previous film “Draupadi ” both were directed by Baburao Patel as he has promised her to make the heroine of the Hindi films when he first met her and made her change to stay in Bombay instead of going to Rajasthan to teach in a college. But he got more than from her.

He got interested in Sanskrit literature, Hindu religion and became a practicing Brahmin. His translation of the Bhagvat Geeta was very good. he continued producing small booklets on various Sanskrit Mantras and a book of stories on Marathi Saints and another on Visit to Religious places in India etc.

Baburao though was a notorious vagabond, womaniser and controversial journalist and editor of the “Film India, he directed five or six Hindi Films in the thirties.

After marrying Sushila Rani his third wife he took a very good interest in the classical music and tried to present Sushila Rani’s voice far too superior to Lata’s singing.

When a fan of Film India asked him his comment in praise of Sushila Rani in hyperbolic words Baburao answered him in his most popular column “Questions and Answers” to this particular questioner “All you said about “Sushi” is true but most of the mornings Sushi gives me “enema treatment as well”
That was Baburao Patel as uncouth as possible!

Shalan Lal,

‘Circulating libraries’ were very popular when I was growing up in Madras in the 70s and 80s, and my parents were members of one such. ‘Mother India’ was one of the magazines that was part of our monthly subscription. I remember reading Baburao’s colourful comments and Sushila Rani’s columns, and elders in the family frequently commenting that he wrote trash. Finally, we substituted ‘Mother India’ with another magazine and it wound up soon after,

Sometime in the late 80s or early 90s, the Saraswat Samaj of Madras organized her concert, but I could not attend for some reason which I do not remember now. I got to know that she sang Jait Kalyan and Raisa Kanada. Many years later – in fact, only a few months before her death – I got to see an excerpt of a live performance in which she had rendered a tarana in Jait Kalyan. Last night, I was listening to a rendition of Jait Kalyan by another musician, and the SRP-JK association suddenly came back to mind, which prompted me to do the Google search that led to the ‘Gwaalan’ find.
