For the SoY regulars, the title of this post may come as a surprise, because DP Rangan has already written an exhaustive post on songs on stars. That was about stars in the sky (i.e. तारे/सितारे). However, there are another kind of stars around whom the film world revolves. They have names like you and me, but when they become too big, they acquire special monikers like ‘the Great Trinity’, ‘the Dream Girl’, ‘the Big B’, ‘the Jumping Jack’, ‘the Phenomenon’, ‘the Three Khans’ and so on. From the media we know that they inhabit the terra firma, but for common folks like us, they are really the ‘Stars from Another Sky’.
Bollywood acknowledges itself and its stars in several self-referential ways. Some self-referential parodies were mentioned in the discussion on my posts on parody songs. Another common form is in films about film-making, such as Kagaz Ke Phool, Bhumika, Rangeela, Guddi etc. There must be dozens of such films. Hollywood, too, has its share of such films, such as Singing in the Rain. Sergio Leone’s Once Upon A Time In The West has acquired a cult status for its stylised references to classic Westerns, such as High Noon for the opening scene of three outlaws waiting at the station for the fourth coming by the train, to the scene of massacre from Shane (and, of course, Sholay’s family massacre scene draws from these sources), to several other well-recognised references.
Guddi reminds me of a very sweet reference by a star for another star. The adolescent character of Jaya Bhaduri, Guddi, is besotted with the film star Dharmendra. The family seeks his help to cure her of this obsession. Dharmendra playing himself in the film says with a shy smile, ‘but I thought the youngsters today adore Rajesh Khanna’. I remember in an old film, the character of Raj Kapoor was mobbed by the crowd, ‘you look like Raj Kapoor’. There are many films in which the film stars pass by the posters of some famous blockbusters, including their own.
But the most delightful self-referential film is Om Shanti Om (2007). The film starts with the scene of picturization of the rockstar Rishi Kapoor’s stage song ‘Om Shanti Om’ in Karz. You see the director Subhash Ghai giving his thumbs up. In the audience there is a motley crowd of hangers on, including a film-crazy aspiring actor Shahrukh Khan. Among other clichés and references are an over-the-top filmi mother Kiron Kher; the heroine caught in fire on the sets being rescued by the ‘hero’ a la Sunil Dutt-Nargis on the sets of Mother India. However, in OSO the wimpy hero is too scared on the sets, forcing the outsider extra Shahrukh Khan to jump in to rescue his ‘heartthrob’ Deepika Padukone, the heroine of the film under production. Later, there is a parade of top film stars at the Filmfare Award function with many of them enacting little scenes of jealousy, pettiness and hypocrisy which had been gossiped in the media; and Madhumati-inspired climax to nail the villain Arjun Rampal. Farah Khan-Shahrukh Khan create a breezy and smart entertainment. In a recent film. a puny actor was mocked for behaving like Sunny Deol. There are a large number of such references in films.
Less known are film songs which refer to the stars. The names mentioned in these songs are a barometer of their standing in the film world. Such songs have been composed from the very early days. Let me present some songs of stars.
I start with three clips from Om Shanti Om which I greatly admire for its clever referencing.
1. Om shanti Om from Karz in the film Om Shanti Om (2007)
Subhash Ghai directing the picturisation of the song, a film-crazy youngster Shahrukh Khan with ambitions of becoming a star in the crowd, his imagining himself in place of Rishi Kapoor on the stage dancing and singing – this is a great use of technology to create several identifiable references.
2. Funny Filmfare Award function from Om Shanti Om
And here is the spoof of a Filmfare Award function with dozens of real stars playing themselves and mercilessly mocking themselves using all the media gossip about them. You also have Karan Johar cracking some PJs as the anchor of the show. By now, the extra-Shahrukh Khan has been reborn as the arrogant and pompous superstar Om Kapoor.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NTzLIOn8ra0
3. Bas deewanagi deewanagi deewanagi hai by Shaan, Udit Narayan, Shreya Ghoshal, Sunidhi Chauhan and Rahul Saxena from Om Shanti Om (2007), lyrics Javed Akhtar, music Vishal-Shekhar
And, at the end of the ‘Award Function’ all the real stars dance with the new star Om Kapoor (Shahrukh Khan). You can count about thirty film stars making special-appearances in the song. This song itself was a tribute to the song John Johnny Janardan from Naseeb (1981).
Om Shanti Om had a parade of film stars and other film personalities – totalling over 50 – in cameos and special appearances playing themselves. Now I come to some songs which contained the names of the famous stars, though not picturised on them.
4. Tujhe Bibbo kahun ya Sulochana by Mirza Musharraf and Kamla from Gharib Ke Laal (1939), lyrics Rafi Kashmiri and Kaabil, music Sageer Asif
You might recall from my series on Anil Biswas that Bibbo was one of his favourite actor-singers in the 1930s and 40s. The lyrics of this song almost entirely consists of film stars’ names. There are over two dozen of them giving us a Who’s Who of the era: Bibbo, Sulochana, Uma Shashi, Jamuna, Motilal, Bilimoria, KL Saigal, Jahanara Kajjan, Shanta Kumari, Ratan Bai, Mehtab, Kanan Devi, Jaddan Bai, Gauhar, Sabita, Devika Rani, Durga Khote, Zubeida, Ghouri, Dixit, Charlie, Surendra, Wasti, Kumar and Rafiq Ghazanavi. In a unique telepathy N Venkataraman posted this song in his comment on parody songs a few days back.
5. Choodiyan le le gori by Mohammad Rafi from Paapi (1953), lyrics Raja Mehadi Ali Khan, music S Mohinder
Raj Kapoor is the perfect bangle-seller who charms the girls that his choodis will make them look like Nargis, Meena Kumari and Geeta Bali
6. Khush hai zamana aaj pahli taarikh hai by Kishore Kumar from Pahli Taarikh (1954), lyrics Qamar Jalalabadi, music Sudhir Phadke
This iconic song, played on Vividh Bharati on the first day of every month without fail, refers to the names of Agha, Bhagwan, Kishore Kumar, Nimmi, Geeta Bali, Ashok Kumar, Nargis, Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar. Kishore Kumar had this penchant for self-referencing from very early in his career. He would do it more confidently later as we have seen in the embedded parody in the song Gunijano re bhaktajano (Aansoo Aur Muskan, 1970).
7. Dil ke hum shahzade hain surat bhale mawali ki by Hemant Kumar from Lalten (1956), lyrics Kaif Irfani, music Hemant Kumar
Hemant Kumar singing a mawali song is quite unusual. This chap has empty pockets but he keeps the photo of Geeta Bali.
8. Sach kahta hai Johnny Walkar by Asha Bhosle from Aji Bas Shukriya (1958), lyrics Farooq Kaiser, music Roshan
In this song Geeta Bali refers to Johnny Walker who is present in the scene.
9. O data O data de humko bhi ek pyara bangala by Rafi and Asha Bhosle from Aji Bas Shuktiya (1958), lyrics Prem Dhawan, music Roshan
In this song from the same film, the actors ask God for a nice bungalow which would make Meena Kumari, Geeta Bali and Dev Anand die of envy.
10. Tin kanastar peet peet kar gala phadkar chillana by Rafi from Love Marriage (1959), lyrics Shailendra, music Shankar Jaikishan
Dev Anand sings a rare didactic song which Manoj Kumar a.k.a Bharat would specialize in later years. He slams the cacophony which goes for music and eulogises Tansen, Baiju Bawra and Saigal.
11. Ghoom ke aya hun main bandhu Roos, Cheen, England….bajewala Patiyalewala by Rafi and Asha Bhosle from Basant (1960), lyrics Qamar Jalalabadi, music OP Nayyar
You would not find a more big-mouthed and boastful bajewala than Johnny Walker who has come back after travelling to Russia, China and England, to give joy to Indians. Raj Kapoor had played dhol in his band; Rafi and Asha Bhosle loved his band; and he mentored (SD) Burman, Shankar-Jaikishan, OP Nayyar and Naushad. You would not miss the self-reference to Rafi and Asha Bhosle who sang the duet, and OP Nayyar who gave the music.
12. Are haan dildaar by Manna Dey and Shamshad Begum from Bewaqoof (1960), lyrics Majrooh Sultanpuri, music SD Burman
IS Johar and the lady in a sticky situation behind the radio start singing, filling in the names of film stars:
Jamuna
Suchitra Sen
Kanan Devi
Uttam Kumar
Bhanumati
Padmini
Ragini
Shivaji Ganesan
Gemini
Vasan
Chettiar.
13. Raj Kapoor si nili aankhein Dev Anand ki chaal by Mohammad Rafi and Hemlata from Ma Aur Mamta (1970), lyrics Anand Bakshi, music Laxmikant-Pyarelal
Jeetendra and Mumtaz are sitting with their gaggle of friends and exchanging what they desire in their life partner. The comic sidekicks have some exaggerated ideas of what they want. The girl wants in her man Raj Kapoor’s blue eyes, Dev Anand’s gait, Dharmendra’s macho and Dilip Kumar’s hair. She also wants the man to be dandy like Sanjay and shy like Shashi Kapoor. He should be shokh like Rajendra Kumar and baanka like Sunil Dutt. This is some list, but the guy is no less starry-eyed: his girl should have waist of Helen, eyes of Padmini, cheeks of Vimi, style of Asha Parekh, playfulness of Sadhna, height of Nutan and coquettishness of Sharmila Tagore. If you thought this was over-the-top, he also wants in his girl the best attributes of Babita, Nanda, Waheeda Rahman, Leena Chandravarkar and Hema Malini. The lead actors give a surprisingly serious turn. Mumtaz does not care for bungalow and car; she wants her man to be a patriot and a brave person like Subhash Bose and Bhagat Singh. Jeetendra is not far behind; he wants his girl to be like Chaand Bibi and Jhansi Ki Rani.
Note: ‘Stars from Another Sky’ (the expression used in the first paragraph) is the name of a collection of memoirs of Manto about his close friends from the film world. Saadat Hasan Manto, besides being a celebrated Urdu writer, had quite an illustrious career in films as a story and screenplay writer.

DREAM GIRL,1979, Kishore Kumar,Anand Bakshi,LP.
Very interesting theme AK. I remembered this one, ‘Choli ke peechhe wali Madhuri hai kya’. What may sound like an abuse is reference to a brother-in-law:

John Johnny Janardan Tara Ram Pam…
NASEEB,1981,Rafi,Anand Bakshi ,LP.
Randhir Kapoor, Bindu, Simple Kapadia.

The star struck Amitabh Bachchan, who sees every picture be it Angrezi ya desi… and thinks..main bhi actor ban jaaoon…
Heroine se( Simi) thakratha hai to make the hero ( Dharam pa ji) angry!
There is a nice moment when AB imitates the signature steps of Raj ,Shammi ,Khanna ,Dharam pa ji.
Dr Shetty,
I have mentioned Bhaktjano re gunijano in my post. Please count the number of stars in song no.4 and 13.
Tu kaun hai,tera naam kya…

TEVAR, Wajid,Kausar Munir/ Sajid, Sajid Wajid.
Subodh,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Choli ke peechhewali is a very nice reference song. Heard for the first time. I would say even the reference to Madhuri Dixit with the gestures is not very flattering.
Dr Shetty,
Nice torrent of star-songs. Except the song John Johnny Janardan others were unknown to me. Didn’t realise there are so many songs of the type.
Ashokji,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation.
Hum do masth malang pilaye bhar bhar thande jam,….
….Kabul ke badaam…
Hema Malini, Sharmila work in josh drinking their almond drink. So do Raj Kapoor, Dharminder,Rafi, Mahinder…
Dara Singh has become Rustum e Hind with their Health drink!
BEIMAAN,1972, Kishore Kumar, Mahinder Kapoor, Varma Malik,Shankar Jaikishan.
I am sure there is an interesting story behind Mahinder Kapoor’s name featuring in the song, but not Kishore’s. Notice.. the film’s heroine Rakhee’s name is there.
Choona laga ke chhodoonga Aisa banoonga Actor main yaron…GHAR GHAR KI KAHANI,1971, Hemlata, Qamar Jalalabadi, Kalyanji Anandji.
Without naming Shammi/ Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, the child artiste imitates them. Interestingly, the names of movies/ songs are taken… Pagla Kahin Ka/ Aashiq,Govinda aala re,Dum dum diga diga, Madhuban mein Radhika naache re,Ek chathur naar…
Here’s a song from ‘Golmaal’, with references to Amitabh, Hema Malini, Rekha and Zeenat Aman and Lata, all of whom, except the last-mentioned, make appearances in the song.
‘Ek din sapne mein dekha sapna’ (Kishore & Amit Kumar/Gulzar/R.D.Burman)

I omitted Junior Mehmood’s name. Wasn’t he a delight to watch in Hum kaale hain toh kya hua…? Good here, too.
Bhandarkar ji, Golmaal song was my next post!

Oh, AKji
For a second, I thought you are really doing a post again on chand taare.
I today morning posted by new ‘twinkling stars in Hindi songs’ post on my blog. And I thought this was a coincidence again.
Again because , tasveer song post on your blog was about to coincide with mine. But as your post was a day before, i cancelled mine.
I read todays post with great interest and enjoyed it a lot of course!
Right now I can think of one song only
From Moti Mahal by Suraiya.
Kabhi Na bigade kisi ki motor
A fun song, for a change,
the only one of its kind by Suraiya.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=oWGpwVepN1Q
She mentions her own name along with Madhubala in first stanza.
P S-do visit my blog as well.
Thank you.
And,then there is O Jaaneman, Jaaneman tere do nayan,CHOTI SI BAAT.
Amol watching Dharmendra and Hema Malini…. suddenly, the girl of his dreams,Vidya Sinha, replaces Hema on screen and he gets upset. Not for too long, though! His imagination next shows himself and Vidya Sinha replacing the stars!
Dr Shetty,
Hum do mast malang seems to follow Baajewala Patiyalewala – bragging about their product. Other songs are also very good.
Ashwin,
So one more reference of OSO – the parade of stars taken from Kala Bazar?
Anup,
I am happy you enjoyed it. I would visit your blog.
Govinda tera Krishan Kanhaiya,Tu hai meri Radha…MERA LAHOO,1987. Mohammad Aziz, Kulwant Jani,Anu Malik.
Govinda lip syncing.
Interesting post, AK. 🙂 Among OSO’s many references was also the clip from Amrapali where they digitally replaced Vyjayanthimala with Deepika in Dheem tana.
Some of the songs in this list are new to me but were so much fun. 🙂
@Ashwin – the premiere in Kala Bazaar was that of Mother India, nt Mughal-e-Azam. [Ref: Dev Anand’s memoirs.]
Both Kala Bazaar and Mughal-e-Azam released in 1960 – they couldn’t have shot the premiere of the latter and still released the former film the same year.
Akji,
The post was not a surprise, since you had hinted a few days ago. Yet it surpasses my (and I am sure others too) expectations. There may be very very few posts on this theme, even this may be the first of its kind. Congratulation for presenting this delightful post.
I have heard of Om Shanti Om, but was not all aware about the reference to so many film stars and celebrities in its songs and situations. So the first three posting were entirely new to me. The song ‘Tujhe Bibbo kahun ya Sulochana’ is a very essential song for this post and thanks for kindly referring to my chance appropriation as telepathy. I could have done more damage. I almost posted two more songs Khush hai hai zamana aaj pahli taarikh hai (#6) & Dil ke hum shahzade hain surat bhale mawali (#7) in the Tasveer post. Thank god I did not. In the first song Kishore Kumar (#6) was holding a framed photograph before mentioning the names of the film stars. But fortunately I could not figure out the person in the photo, I dithered and it went off my mind. In the next one (#7), I could not find a video version of the song, hence I was not sure about the existence of the photo of Geeta Bali in the visuals. Four more songs (8,9,10 and 13) were new to me.
The song ‘Are ladki beautiful kar gayi chull chull chull’ from the film Kapoor & Sons (2016) mentions the name of Raveena Tandon
kya naache tu dilli, hile hai london
matak matak jaise raveena tadon
While searching for the songs for Bharat Darshan posts, I came across this song, was not impressed. That is the only song that immediately comes to my mind.

Thanks once again
After the title credits of the film ‘Andaz Apna Apna’ , Aamir Khan sitting (sleeping) at the cash counter of his father’s (Deven Verma) hair cutting salon dreams of meeting Juhi Chawla and almost marries her, when a hard push from his father bring him back to the real world. Actress Jhuhi Chawla’s car broke down on the roads, and seeing her Aamir Khan exclaims, ‘Aila, Juhi Chawla!’. Watch this amusing scene.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LS4xmsDUHeU
In the film ‘Ki & Ka’ Amitabh and Jaya appears as themselves. The hero, Kabir is invited to meet Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan,, at the request Of Jaya Bachhan, after seeing a TV show. Watch this interesting scene.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-C4o8o4GY7o
Anu,
I am happy you liked the post.
Kala Baazar: It must have been an inadvertent slip by Ashwin. The scene shows the poster of Mother India. Among the stars walking are Nargis and Kumkum.
OSO is unabated references beginning to end. A very subtle one is when Shahrukh Khan (by now the superstar Om Kapoor) has invited Arjun Rampal to complete the project. While they are having coffee, the negotiation is on the verge of breaking. Shahrukh Khan has to conceal that he is desperate for a deal. At this game of chicken, Shahrukh chips in: Frankly, my dear I don’t give a damn!
Venkataramanji @27, 28,
The three songs you have posted are very creative and nicely picturised. Amitabh Bachchan have started jointly appearing on some commercials.
Tu hi meri Laxmi,tu hi meri Chaya,
Duniya mein aaya toh sirf tere khatir aaya,
O meri Laxmi Chaya….
DUNIYA,1968,Rafi,Shailendra,SJ.
Interesting,right?
Picturized on , who else, but Laxmi Chaya and Johnny Walker.
AKji:
Very innovative post with entertaining choice of songs throughout. Here is ‘In haathon se sabki gaadi chal rahi hai’ (Kishore in “Chalti ka naam gaadi”; MD: SDB) referring to Dilip Kumar in first antara.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EBxcU5MJ9A
HERO HEERALAL,1988…Amitabh Bachchan has a brief appearance… Drives the Diva in distress,Sanjana Kapoor,to her destination.Asks her,Toh aap ko Happy ending chhahiye? Then points his finger at the audience and asks,Aap ko bhi?
Though there is no song,Arey deewano ,mujhe pehchano,…..,….DON(instrumental)…plays in the background throughout the scene.
The prelude to the title song,Bom Bom Bom, Bombay to Goa ( mehaki mehaki thandi hawa ye bataa…), BOMBAY TO GOA,1972, Kishore Kumar, Rajinder Kishan,RDB… Anwar Ali, Mehmood ( Rajesh,. Khanna… Driver, Conductor).. spotting Kishore Kumar on the road, with a car breakdown… They appreciate his acting in Aradhana. No,says KK,it is Rajesh Khanna doing the acting, and he ,the singing.Mere saamnewale khidki mein…is mentioned and KK says it is a Mehmood film.
Enjoyable comedy.
Anu @ 26 – Thanks for pointing my gaffe out!
Ashwin,
You have added some nice ones at #18, 19, 20 and 21. Regarding #20, OSO also has a nice reference to Rajini and South Indian kitsch in general when the junior artiste Shahrukh enacts ‘Enna rascala. Mind it’.
No song, but hard to resist forwarding.
The scene from KHOSHISH,1972…Deaf mute couple Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bhaduri using a public telephone. Dilip Saab, playing himself, receiving the call and asking the caller to speak louder. After some time,he ,in his trademark madham voice , says…madham bolta hai!
I bet everyone of us remembers this scene.. childhood days for most of us, teenage or early twenties/ thirties for the rest… right?
Is Pankaj Udhas playing himself in this song from ‘Naam’?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0_IRIFYC0k
AK ji ;
So many songs already posted it seem I have to work hard finding songs or scenes which are left over.
I will open my innings with two clips from R K movies and hope my friends of RK camp would be happy to note them.
1. A clip where baby Naaz and Rattan Kumar are begging inside fully crowded running train and spotting Raj Kapoor . beautiful acting by both as also Awara hoon instrumental score in the back ground . A small clip but very interesting.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2SWZrYvoPQ
2. The second clip is from the movie Awara .In this clip Shashi Kapoor [acting as childhood Raj Kapoor ] is polishing shoes with background music/song from the movie Boot Polish , the movie that came much later after Awara.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-okHwzp98zo
Such situations speaks of the Raj Kapoor music bank for which SJ songs and tunes were reserved for so many years to be used in situations as per the demand of the story.
AK ji;
Ek padosan peechhe pad gayi…..song from Gopi carries a number of film songs starring Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu and enacted by themselves .
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJ4yyCg7rv8
Dr Shetty,
#30: Tu hi meri Laxmi tu hi meri Chhaya is very smart.
#32: Hero Hiralal was an excellent film referring to Bollywood tropes. My favourite, I was surprised when it was declared a flop. OSO takes the idea several notches higher.
#33: Kishore Kumar in Bombay to Goa was very smartly done.
*36: You have a sharp memory. I do not remember the scene.
Canasya,
Thanks a lot for your application. In CKNG, In hatho se is the least remembered song. I must say the SoY readers have a sharp memory.
Ashwin,
#37: I don’t remember, but the picturisation shows Paankaj Udhas might be playing himself. That reminds me, thanks to Subodh Agrawal, that Subir Sen made a guest appearance and sang She din dujone, a classic Rabindrasangeet.
Subir Sen sings She din dujone in Anubhav
KS Bhatiaji,
You are never short of songs on any theme. As an RK-fan you would remember in Kahta hai joker Raju Joker shows bioscope to the kids which shows clippings from classic RK films like Awara and Shri 420.
Kahta hai joker from Mera Naam Joker
In the same film, later when the time comes for parting of the Russian circus artistes, there is a moving scene between Raj Kapoor and Marina (Kesnia Ryabinkina). At the airport she mumbles something in Russian. On Dara Singh’s query, Raj Kapoor replies she reminded him of an old song, and Awara hun plays in the background. He did love himself. Didn’t he?
AK, Ashwin, I guessed it was a slip. I wasn’t correcting Ashwin as wanting to put the correct information out. God knows I’ve made enough such gaffes. 🙂
AK, yes, OSO was referential throughout – remember the cart that’s named ‘Dhanno’ when SRK rushes to save Amrita, Zahed and their friends?
Examples of Lata’s/Asha’s songs featuring their own names, names of their siblings or their parents’ names 🙂 –
1. Lata’s name appears at 3:02:
‘Yeh tanhaai haaye re haaye re’ from ‘Tere Ghar ke Saamne’ (Lata/SDB/HAsrat)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLZbp7VMcjI
2. Meena’s name is the 2nd word of the mukhda:
‘Eena meena deeka’ from ‘Asha’ (!) (Asha/C.Ramchandra/Rajendra Krishan)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2XXeon6Vo4
3. Asha’s name is the 2nd word of the mukhda:
‘Tum asha vishwaas hamaare’ from ‘Subah’ (Lata/Hridaynath/Narendra Sharma)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEUl8zh2KAU&start_radio=1&list=RDGEUl8zh2KAU
4. Usha’s name makes an appearance at 2:17:
‘Jyoti kalash chalke’ from ‘Bhabhi ki choodiyaan’ (Lata/Sudhir Phadke/Narendra Sharma)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajb-SgmNevg
5. ‘BaaL’ features in the first line:
‘Dnyaandev baaLa maazhaa’ (Asha/Vasant Prabhu/P.Sawalaram)
6. The sthaayi starts with ‘Maai’ and ends with ‘Dinanath’:
‘Maai mhaaro supnama’ (Lata/Hridaynath/Meerabai)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iz4GDgbB8fU
Bhandarkar ji, l am not the authority to analyse the posts, but the Lata,Asha words in the above songs were not deliberate,in my opinion.
Going with the flow, one rather deliberate instance of having one’s name in a song is..
O meri,o meri,o meri Sharmeelee…
…..
O NEERAJ naina aa zara,aa zara….
SHARMEELEE,1971, Kishore,SDB.
Lyricist….Of course,NEERAJ!
AK ji @42 ;
Yes , I remember all these details of scenes described by yourself . I think Raj Kapoor was too much obsessed with the success of Awara and Shree 420 and their success in Russia and other countries . In Mera Naam Joker he almost repeated best of scenes from these two films , just sort of a reminder that this film is from RK camp ; but they were not upto the standards set by him . As such in fact worked against its success .
These scenes were
1. The song …..Teetar ke do aage teeter….. could never match as equivalent to …..eichak dana beechak daana . The B&W photography was too good in Shree 420 .
2. The sets and song…More aang lagja balma….could never come close to wet street scenes with mist and raining effects and musical details of falling rain drops and thunders of ….Pyar hua iqrar hua hai.
3. The title song ….Kehta hai joker…..against …..mera joota hai japani and Awara hoon …..was too weak .
4. The bioscope scenes again was a reminder to the audience of his own personality as he is the one who made these movies .
There are quite a few more ; but inspite of that he had some masterly directed touches in many of scenes . The main reason of its not making any box office bombing was its length . three and an half hour was too much a strain . Yes; the first part was a good one and that remained positive one till now. Shankar jaikishan did their job well. The back ground score is the one I usually listen to whenever my mind is set to listen to SJ’s songs . The YT has it and one can listen to the charming notes and violins magic.
Dr Shetty ji @45:
In pre-IP era poets (Rahim, Tulasi, Ghalib, Faiz, etc.) used to weave in their name in their oeuvre in one way or other. That tradition continues. Here is ‘Hum hain mata-e-koocha-o-bazaar ki taraah’ (Lata in Dastak; MD: MM). Majrooh’s name comes in the second antara (starting at 2:44).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jrdp3LdoiGA
Rangan ji had posted Talat’s NFS (Tasveer teri dil mera behla na sakegi) which had Faiyyaz’s name in the third antara. Ghalib’s name, of course, appears in Rafi’s ‘Hai bas ki har ek’ (Mirza Ghalib, MD: Ghulam Mohammed).
Ashwin @44,
It seems Dr Shetty missed your smiley. SD Burman sang Hota tu peepal main hoti amar ‘Lata’ teri in Sun mere bandhu re. Next time you do it you have to give a loud warning.
Bhandarkar ji,AK ji,
I ,sure, missed the smiley!
Did I sound like a nitpicker?!?
Very interesting post, AK! Baajewaala Patialewaala was the first song that came to my mind, and as I went through your list I remembered some more – but hadn’t realized just many of these songs there were. Thanks.
Still looking for songs , here are three finding to fit in the theme . The first one mentioning Hasrat [ jaipuri]; the second Rafi sahib and third actress Ragini .
1. Hasrat hi rahi hum se bhi koi pyar karta….KK…Bombai ka Chor…Ravi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UD6xUzpCGUI
2. Rafi tu bahut yaad aaya….Mohd Aziz….Kroadh…..LP

3. Suno ji suno hamari bhi suno….Mukesh…Ek dil sau afsane…..SJ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSoRsXvBjVQ
[ Beautiful dance by Waheeda ji and great classic melody by SJ . Dance by Raj Kapoor is a surprise. Presence of Uma Devi with Dholak adds to rhythm and beats .]
Madhu,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. I am happy you enjoyed the post.
KS Bhatiaji,
Song #2 perfectly fits the theme. Amitabh Bachchan as Amitabh Bachchan and Rafi the great singer being mentioned in the song – very nice addition. But I am sorry to disappoint you, #1 and 3 are off. Hasrat hi rahi: ‘Desire’, not the lyricist; Ye ragini hai pyar ki: ‘Melody’, not the dancer-actor Ragini. Ashwin at @44 had added a smiley.
Canasyaji @ 47
Finding the lyricist’s / author’s name is common in ghazals and in pre-era poets (as mentioned by you) or even some NFS. But in film songs, I think it is rare. Although we know the song, you remembered the lyrics. Nice find.
Here is a scene from the film ‘Hero Hiralal’, film star Roopa (Sanjna Kapoor) is desperately trying to stop a car so that she can save Hiralal (Naseeruddin Shah) from being killed. A crowd of autograph hunters surrounds her, only to make way for Amitabh Bachchan who comes by driving a car. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZnU4Itx118
Amitabh Bachhan again in a funny scene in the film Jalwa (1987)

In the second antara, the singer Rana Mazumdar mentions the name of Zeenat, Hema , Rakhee and Rekha (01:53)

This song Aslam Bhai, Mere Aslam Bhai from the film Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega (2001) could be posted any of three post, Around the World, Songs of Stars and Tasveer exhibits of Bollywood.
In the opening lines we can find the mention of Dubai
Aslam bhai,mere aslam bhai
hey,aslam bhai,aslam bhai,aslam bhai
dubai ka chashma, chin ki chaddi, aur irani chai
In the 1st anatara the names of Madhuri and Aiswarya are mentioned
tera chehra qayamat hai arre, bollywood ki shaamat hai
na tu nanga,na tu hakla,na tu ganja, aslam bhai
haath mein bas paanch ungli, hero ban jaa aslam bhai
Madhuri pachhtayegi,Aishwariya karegi haai
And Madhuri’s photo can be seen in the wall

The songs #53, 54 and 55 fit the theme nicely. #56 breaks several new grounds. Nice discovery. How do you discover these songs?
Dr Shetty,
You are unstoppable. You don’t have to resort to smileys.
Mumbaikar8 @59,
This is another pathbreaking song in references galore. The lead stars watching Awara in the theatre, reprising scenes from his movies, posters, names of films of all the top stars – It seems there is no end to imagination. This is not only good, it rocks.
Canasya,
Guest appearances are permitted. The scene fits.
KS Bhatiaji,
Not surprising that Pakistan should acknowledge Dilip Kumar. They should preserve his and RK’s homes in Peshawar as national assets.
Bhatiaji @ 61
That was another wonderful addition.
Besides the Hindi film stars mentioned by you, there were Pakistani (East & West), Bengali and American film actors mentioned in the song. Santosh (Kumar), Neelo & Aslam (Pervaiz) were well known actors of Pakistan (West), Shabnam was star actress of Pakistan and her actual name was Jharna Basak. She was the wife of Robin Ghosh, the music director of Begaana. Subhas Dutt was a well known theater and film artists of East Pakistan. Suchitra (Sen), Rock Hudson and Liz Taylor too were referred to in the song.
Akji @ 62
I draw my inspiration from Bhatiaji.
Mumbaikaji @ 59
Akji has rightly said, it rocks. Hats off.
A bit of Cricket memories from a rare specimen, yours truly, who isn’t a cricket enthusiast!
Sir Frank Worrell, the first Black captain of the West Indies cricket team, one W of The Three Ws of West Indies team ( Weekees, Walcott being the other two), will be remembered by the Indians for his life saving blood donation to Mari Contractor, who had sustained a career ending head injury by a bouncer, during the 1962 India tour of the West Indies.
He is the first batsman to be a part of two 500 run partnerships( Raveendra Jadeja is the only other person). He was made a Jamaican Senator after his retirement. Since 1960_61, the Australia_ West Indies cricket trophy is called the Frank Worrell Trophy. There are stadiums and other places named after him in the West Indies.
Great man,eh?
But, what is the significance of the man vis a vis our blog?!?
Well, AROUND THE WORLD,1967.
A ‘ little drunk’ Om Prakash, talking Cricket to a football loving Mehmood, spots Sir Worrell walking by,stops him and quizzes him about the greatest Indian cricketers….The fastest bowler,Milka Singh, the greatest wicket keeper, Shammi Kapoor and the greatest opening bat, who never gets out, Mohammad Rafi! But,Sir Worrell faces all the questions calmly and corrects Om Prakash…. Athlete, Actor, and playback singer.
Sir Worrell passed away in March 1967, just before the release of the movie. Pachhi has dedicated the movie to the loving memory of Worrell.
Type Worrell and Om Prakash in Around the World..in YouTube to see.

So,Star presence in absence!
Do bear with me for the leniency taken without permission at the beginning of the post.
Dr. Pradip Kr. Shetty ji @ 65
Thanks for mentioning Frank Worrell’s cameo appearance in “Around the World”. Bertrand Russell too had made a cameo appearance in the film ‘Aman (1967). Rajendra Kumar is having a serious discussion (or monologue) with Bertrand Russell, in reality he looks stiff.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BilHsf4FcG8
You will find a few more. I think Ruskin Bond too had done a cameo role.
Dr. Pradip Kr. Shettyji @ 66
I am honoured to be among the august company. Lest I get a warrant / summon, let me take refuge or move around the world or some Metros for the time being. My first destination is Nainital and I will have O P Nayyar for company.
Expect others to join me.
Before I leave here is a song from Hatiyar (1977)
In the third stanza you will find Kalyanji Anandji’s name.
And in the fourth stanza, you will find the the names of Raj (Kapoor), Dev (Anand), Hema (Malini), Saira(Banu) and Dilip Kumar .
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=3&v=KJ9SbOtRhXs
N Venkatraman ji,Yes,I had mentioned AMAN, Bertrand Russell in a previous post… Tasveer… while writing on the Hiroshima song.
I,too, vaguely remember reading about Ruskin Bond’s cameo in some movie..
7 KHOON MAAF,2011, Based on his own story , Ruskin Bond played a Church priest.
Vishal Bhardwaj had earlier adopted Ruskin Bond’s story for BLUE UMBRELLA,2005,and,I had posted a story telling song from the movie yesterday!
JUNOON, the underrated Shyam Bengal,Shashi Kapoor classic,1978,is based on Bond’s A Flight of pigeons. Bengal _ Screenplay, Ismat Chugtai/ Satyadev Dube_ Dialogues,Kabir and Amir Khusro’s works …a strong writing department, indeed.
Dr Shetty @66,
I give up.
PEHLA NASHA,1993, Ashutosh Gowariker debut film as a director ( he was a Marathi/ Hindi movie actor..HOLI,KHKN,CHAMATKAR…,TV producer ,director,ad man etc earlier)had Amir Khan,SRK,Saif Ali Khan, Juhi Chawla, Sudhesh Berry,Rahul Roy in very brief cameos appearing as themselves.
The Deepak Thijori, Pooja Bhatt,Raveena Tandon movie was a box office dud. So,too , was his next BAAZI,1995, famous for the drag act by Amir Khan.
What do you do when your Maushi and Aai are the best voices in the country, and, you are a music director? Of course, you create a nice duet.
That’s what Hemant Bhonsle did!
TAXI TAXI,1977,Layee kahan ae zindagi, hai saamne manjil meri… Asha Bhonsle,Lata Mangeshkar, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Hemant Bhonsle.
Asha recording in the studio till 3.32 while the heroine Zahira is trying to regain her lost voice. Lata comes in at 4.42 with Mera toh jeevan hai geeth mere. We don’t see her,she is the playback for Zahira. Her sudden emerging causes some strange expressions on Asha’s face. Hemant Bhonsle is also seen as himself, the composer, recording the song. He ,too, has his ten seconds of fame when he gives a startled expression on Zahira ( Lata) going into a fit of coughing and ending the singing as abruptly as the beginning!
Coming to the end of typing I wonder wasn’t the Marathi movie with Asha Bhonsle in the title role called Aai?
The several cameos in GUDDI are often discussed. But,do you know Hrishikesh Mukherjee himself has a cameo, unconditional , though, in the movie?
How many cameos can you count in CHALA MURARI HERO BANNE,1977 and LUCK BY CHANCE,2009?
Sleep on that.
Dr Shetty,
If you give the link we can count the cameos. But I doubt if any film can beat Om Shanti Om in this. Thanks for adding so many star-songs.
Wow,
I’m enjoying the discussion.
It’s so refreshing.
🙂
Golden Era of Hindi music is our principal interest.. Alright. But, most of us in our fifties and many in the higher age group do keep a tab on the present day films and music… Right?
KHALNAYAK, who? Of course, Sanjay Dutt. 1993.
Desi Girl? Priyanka Chopra? Absolutely! DOSTANA,2008.
Chitti? ROBOT? Enna Rascala… Rajni Saar daan! 2010.
All of us are familiar with the baritone of Amitabh Bachchan from the late 60s…AIR may have found it below their standards, but the whole nation went on to love it, especially after ” Jab tak baithne ko na kahaa jaaye sharafat se khade raho,Ye Police station hai, tumhara baap ka ghar nahin.”
You get all of the above in
RA.ONE,2011.
Desi Girl and Khalnayak in a dream
sequence/ song…
Chitti meets the lead pair SRK and Kareena Kapoor on a street…
AB’s baritone introduces the Principal Villain Ra. One( Random Access One,/ Ravan)!
Bruce Lee is also mentioned, but only before introducing his cousins, Iski Lee,Uski Lee and Sabki Lee!
From here I shall jump over to The songs that tell a story!
Dr Shetty,
Even Shahrukh Khan made fun of this dud movie Ra-One. I had no reason to see it.
AK ji,
It indeed was a dud,a Raw One!
Interesting theme. It was fun going through the post and the comments are reading about all the songs and scenes.
Here are two that haven’t been mentioned yet.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mT9ceWpHAhA
Ude pancchi toli mein – Mehandi Lagi Mere Haath (1962)/Usha Mangeshkar-Mahendra Kapoor/Kalyanji-Anandji/Anand Bakshi
The movie stars Nanda and Shashi Kapoor and the lyrics allude to “baby Nanda” and “bhai Raj Kapoor ka.”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UIShfj_6YE
Tumko hum dilbar kyon maane – Tezaab(1988)/Anuradha Paudwal-Sudesh Bhonsle/Laxmikant-Pyarelal/Javed Akhtar
Mentions Dara Singh, Sridevi and Amitabh Bachchan.
Naach meri Jaan fataafaat… MAIN SUNDAR HOON,1971,Kishore Kumar ,Asha,Anand Bakshi,SJ.
We see Kishore Kumar and Jaikishan in the recording studio. I remember the multi colour Kaftan like attire of Kishore even after nearly five decades! I am sure some of us may be able to identify some assistants, music arrangers etc in the scene.
Jaane kya ho jaye, jab dil se dil mil jaye…AAINA,1977,Rafi,Lata,Jan Nisar Akhtar, Naushad.
Dharmendra and Neetu Singh play themselves.
Kamal Haasan plays a dance director ( or ,is it an assistant?) in a non credited role. He had a bigger role in the original ARANGETRAM,Tamil.
I think it must be the only K Balachander, Naushad combination. How about Naushad,Jan Nisar Akhtar?
Your mentioning the name of Raj Kapoor in the beginning brought instantly to mind two interesting scenes from his film: one is Do Ustad where he tries to ‘pose’ as Raj Kapoor; the other is Boot Polish, where the two kids begging in a train spot Raj Kapoor asleep by a window, the girl excitedly pointing out, Raj Kapoor!
Nareshji,
I remembered that. There are several more. I have also mentioned the scene in Mera Naam Joker in which the joker Raju shows the children clippings from RK’s classic films in his bioscope.
Dr. Pradeep Kr. Shettyji,
After my ‘Manas Vraman’ to some ‘small towns’ I was traversing through Kolkata/ Calcutta. I hope the air is clear to make a comeback to this post. Thanks for some remarkable additions.
@83, besides Jaikishan and Kishore Kumar, I could identify Anand Bakshi sitting in recording room.
I will be back with some songs of stars.
PS: On 1st May I wrote” I am fleeing to Nainital in apprehension of a warrant / summon. Of course it was in jest. Alas, the response to my humour had a deadpan effect. In reality too, I am back in Kolkata after my brief visit to Delhi.
Venkatraman ji ;
One Big Universe and we have S o Y !! It was a great feeling for me to be with all of SoY members who could make it big on 5 th May , for a meet over a grand buffet lunch hosted by AK’Ji . Knowing them personally is an experience like meeting old lost friends suddenly reappearing .
Jaikishan has been my fav. composer ; as he was the one who lived with the moving time ; creating melodies with up trend western setup that india went thru after british extended time . The clubs , high end restaurants and hotels were all playing the famous ballroom waltz and rock and roll music to push and make people move to the dancing floors . The most active clubs in the 50s were that of YMCA and British Information Centre . In bollywood scenerio C. Ramchandra almost took the lead and held high his position . It was a trend to show one or two club dance numbers in movies of those time , entertaining the audience with dances by Helen, Cukkoo etc. [ Item Numbers of those times ? ].
Here is one song where Jaikishan is shown dancing in club scene over beautiful song from Shree 420 ……Mud mud ke na dekh . One can note that first half of this song is based on a slow waltz like beats and changed the beats and rhythm on fast notes when Mannadey takes over as lead singer . To me this two part song is probably composed separately by Shankar and Jaikishan and then merged or fusion together .
The beautiful dance direction with lined up extras giving you a feeling of highway ride and isometric light bulbs depicting highway road pillars light .

Salman Khan as himself singing an almost Kishore Kumar like Amit Kumar song (parody? Meri pyari Bindu)in DUSHMAN DUNIYA KA,1999.
Mehmood’s last directorial ( acting,as well?) outing.
The lyrics make references to BHOOT BANGLA, PADOSAN, BOMBAY TO GOA etc,as well as MAINE PYAR KIYA,HAHK etc.

N Venkatraman ji,

Bhatiaji @ 88
It is same with me. Thanks to Akji and others for this great experience.
On to the song Mud Mud ke na dekh. Thank for the nice analysis and description. I think Shankar too can be seen in the sequence. Jaikishan also appears in another scene in Shree 420, as the drunkard Johny, when Raj Kapoor goes to make the delivery from the laundry and meets Nadira.. Do you remember the scene? Jaikishan appear at 02:18
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gDc4fKRBBQ
Dr.Pradip Kr.Shettyji,
You must have added quite a number of cameos. How many more do you have in stock?
Just my two cents.
Music directors Jatin and Lalit in their cameo roles. Lalit appears on screen as the bass guitarist for the band from Xavier’s College. Jatin appears as the singer for the same college.
Humse Hai Saara Jahan by Sadhana Sargam and Jatin, film Jo Jita Wohi Sikandar (1992), lyrics Majrooh Sultanpuri, music Jatin -Lalit

On 08/05… I am posting a dessert you will all love.
KAAGAZ KE PHOOL,1959. At 28.18….
Waheeda Rehman comes to the studio to return Guru Dutt’s coat. Not realising that the shooting for Ajanta Pictures Devdas is on,she wanders into the shot. One can hear the cinematographer shout “cut”and the studio crane comes down bearing the director Guru Dutt, chief cinematographer V Ratra and his assistant V K Murthy. V Ratra has a few more words to shout at Waheeda for ruining the shot, while VKM sits smug…
Guru Dutt asks Waheeda to be seated. The shooting resumes. Scene 27, take 5. Date…27/06/?59. Dutt finally asks to retain takes 10/11. A bored Waheeda has left! But, while seeing the rushes later,Dutt is fascinated by the baffled expressions of Waheeda caught by the camera and that is how a Star is born!
The assistant VKM was actually the Chief cinematographer for this… the first CinemaScope movie. Went on to win the Filmfare award and many more accolades for his play of light and shadows here. Repeated for Sahib Biwi aur Ghulam. The coveted Dada Saheb Phalke award in 2000.
Then, why was he shown as an assistant?
Well,he began his career,as V Ratra’s assistant in BAAZI,1951. Dutt’s first directorial. Impressed with his work here,Dutt made VKM the chief cinematographer for his next,JAAL,1952. A bond that stayed till the end.
Similarly, from AFSAR,1950 to CHUPA RUSTOM,1973 V Ratra handled the camera for many Dev Anand movies..KALA BAZAAR,KALA PAANI,TERE GHAR KE SAMNE,JEWEL THIEF,HUM DONO,TERE MERE SAPNE..
Long winded? Hope the dessert didn’t spoil your appetite for future feasts.
Did I hear someone like me left out of the August company on 05/05 say, ” Just desserts!”
Bon appetite!
Akji, Bhatiaji, Dr.Shettyji,
I feel that when an actor or an actress or a singer or a music director or any celebrity makes an appearance as themselves in a film it fits the theme. A brief appearance in a different role or a guest appearance does not exactly fit the theme (Jatin-Lalit song sequence). Of course it has opened another sub theme and it provides an interesting diversion too (Jaikishan in Mud mud ke dekh song sequence or the drunkard role played by Jaikishan).
Vinod Rathod appearing as himself in Bazigar. I am not sure about Anu Malik, who introduces Vinod Rathod before the song, Chupana Bhi Nahi Aata

Malayalam, Makkala..Beary language..Kodeyaala..Havyak Kannada__supposed to be the only city in the world to have eight names across as many languages)? Shammi Kapoor on a wheelchair played shehanai so convincingly in grand nephew Ranbir Kapoor’s ROCKSTAR,2011. You can definitely match up to him.
But Shammi’s cameo relavant to our post is from Sanjay Dutt debut,ROCKY,1981 where he played himself.
Venkatraman ji @91;
Yes ; I have seen jaikishan’s acting as Nadira’s husband earlier also. In Begunah, the famous banned movie of the mid 50s , he sang his own composed song….Aye pyase dil bezuban… on screen . Some where in one interview he wished himself to be an actor too….but thank god it didn’t happened.
Note one more actor …..Sadhana as child ….sitting right in the middle of school children of Nargis class , singing ….Ichak Dana Bichek dana…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Dx_STgFLLo
I didn’t know Shankar was also in the song….Mud mud ke na dekh
Dr, Shetty @93 ;
Nice analysis of cinematography sequence of Kagaz Ke Phool . V K Murthy is one of the greatest pioneer of B&W photography and most of Guru Dutts films testify his achievements . Contrast and Shadow frames speaks for his superlative works . I remember some shots of songs where he excelled …..
…..in ..Sun sun sun zalima pyar tumse….film Aar Paar …. beauty of shyama and her expressions are caught in the taxi’s window frames . Note the camera position , from where these shots could have been possible ….one just can’t imagine .
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ws4_dxK3Q3A
……in ….Ja ja ja o bewafa …the song is sad and so is the camera work . What excelled here is that the line …dilbar jafa dekh li , beasar duwaa dekh li, kuchh kiya na dil ka khayal ja ter jaffa dekh li…. is captured in three different frame ; adding one eye drop in each frame to enhance the meloncoly of the song . Salute to the Editor too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZ0-S5xrP9I
V Ratra was also a class by himself . He had a strong hold in Navketan’s camp and did movies for Guru dutt and his brother too.

Dr Shetty, Venkataramanji,
Now the discussion is getting interesting. Your #94 immediately reminded me of Hitchcock who became famous for his playful brief cameos: part of a crowd scene, jostling to get into a train compartment, walking on a street shown in a long shot etc. While Subhash Ghai appeared as himself in OSO, he has also made some Hitchcokian appearances. I am sure Dr Shetty can list all those. Thus we can classify the star-cameos in two broad categories: one, the celebrity playing himself; two, the celebrity (particularly director) making Hitchcockian appearance. In his British period, Hitchcock did it occasionally. After moving to Hollywood he appeared in all his films, making about 40 cameos in all. For Hitchcock fans, spotting him in the film became a source of great excitement. Dr Shetty may attempt to write a paper on cameos. One interesting question would be who in Bollywood has done most cameos. My guess is Kishore Kumar.
#96: I love Bappi Lahiri’s heavy Bengali accent and his attempt at acting. Venkataramanji, thanks a lot for this and other links you have sent.
#101: I counted 47 names. I had guessed 50. That should be the largest number of cameos in a film. Thank you Dr Shetty for this list.
In passing, you seem to have missed an interesting cameo in Phata Poster Nikala Hero. The fake police officer Shahid Kapoor is compelled by the enthusiastic do-gooder girl to chase the criminals. He sees Salman Khan driving his car. Shahid Kapoor is star-struck and taps the window for autograph, Salman Khan is frightened that he has again committed a traffic violation for the police officer to give him a chase.
AK ji,
Phata poster Nikla Hero scene is a good addition.
On Hitchcock et al and Subhash Ghai,I have,as usual, much to add! Who grumbled.. what’s new in it?!?( Need a Smiley here). But before that a candid confession. Don’t know how to tell this! Anyway,I am mustering the courage to come clean. Be ready for a jolt.
Shahrukh bola Tu khoobsurat hai…Arey! What has come over Dr Shetty…is what most of you would be thinking right now! Gotcha!
SHAHRUKH BOLA TU KHOOBSURAT HAI is a movie with a cameo by, Surprise Surprise!!, Shahrukh Khan.
The 2010 movie has a title song, too.( By now many of you would have figured out that I have a special affinity for title songs).

In AROUND THE WORLD,Rajashree’s friend introduces Raj Kapoor as AASHIQ to which she retorts by saying,Ye kaun si JAANWAR ka naam hai? Obvious references to Raj and Shammi Kapoor (she herself being the heroine)films. How I wish she had also referred to Shashi Kapoor…DHARMAPUTRA, THE HOUSEHOLDER, SHAKESPEAREWALA…..anything! Others ..JUAARI,MR ROMEO , FAKIRA etc came later… after Rajashree left the scene ( scene,as in the film industry, and not as a sequence of a movie!).
She could have referred to Raj Kapoor as ANAARI safely then. But, later came a highly forgettable ANAARI starring Shashi Kapoor, too( by Asit Sen!).1975.
Then there were ANAARI and ANAARI NUMBER ONE in the nineties.
Good Evening Dear AK,
As usual, an excellent article with videos.
Thanks for sharing.
Regards and blessings

As a tribute to Sridevi today, I am posting a song fitting this theme, which I didn’t see in the comments.
Though from a typical action movie – Naakabandi 1990, its an enjoyable song thanks to Sridevi’s dance, expressions and antics.
Its nice to see her lip syncing – main Sridevi lagti hoon
Bappi – Anjaan – Asha
Thaam thaam zara dil ko le thaam…Rekha ko dekha tune Hema ko dekha..
….main lagti hoon Sridevi lagti hoon
Around 13 other actresses are named along with Gabbar’s dialogues

Dr Deshpande,
A fabulous reference song, she includes Sridevi too.
Though a bit late in the day, I think these two songs have not been mentioned.
