Tujhe chaand ke ‘bahaane’ dekhun ki ‘chhat’ par aa ja goriye

5 February 2019

Ude jab jab zuklfein teriToday’s young generation would scarcely believe the stratagems the lovers in the earlier days had to adopt to set up a rendezvous. ‘Atariya’ was one favourite place going back to the days of Romeo and Juliet. As we have seen earlier, its vantage position at the back of the house made it an appropriate place for a date, away from the prying eyes of the parents and others. ‘Angana’, on the other hand, was a central feature of the house, and more like a public square in a private home, where the family lived out its daily life, drying papads and pickles, chillies, spices and grains, did the pounding, dehusking, grinding, and finally, communal cooking, and laying out cots for sleeping under the sky and the stars. This was also the place for ceremonies and functions. Even in such a bustling place, the intrepid lovers managed to steal a glance and more: Kabhi yaad karke gali paar kar ke chali ana hamare angana.

‘Chhat’ (छत), or rooftop, is another feature of the house with immense possibilities despite its blandness. It would not excite an architect, but it could be a lovers’ paradise. It is ideal for kite-flying by the two lovers on adjacent roofs, and when one is cut its owner is forced to go to the other roof to retrieve it. Or when the freshly-bathed girl goes up to the roof to put the washed clothes on the clothesline, her lover can wait on the adjacent roof for a glance. The new lovers have become more daring – in a recent film, Manmarziyan, the characters of Tapasi Pannu and Vicky Kaushal as wild lovers jump across the roofs for some passionate union, under the guard of the helpful younger sister of the heroine who is on watch for any sound of footsteps climbing the stairs to the roof.

To be sure, chhat was also a good place for drying papads and pickles, and family gatherings, but its access required some effort, unlike the aangan. Therefore, the lovers had less risk of being surprised.

Those days it was unthinkable for the lovers to meet openly. They had to think of some ‘bahana’ or pretext to explain why they were going where they were going, or doing what they were doing. The ecosystem of the songs of yore also contained some unique cultural aspects of the times. Chhat and bahana songs also pertain to an era gone by. Let us relive those beautiful days with some of the best songs of the type.

1. Ude jab jab zulfein teri by Rafi and Asha Bholse from Naya Daur (1957), lyrics Sahir Ludhiyanavi, music OP Nayyar

Dilip Kumar and Vyjayanthimala maintain reserve in public, but this communal Bhangra gives them an opportunity to exchange their feelings. Dilip Kumar is particularly bold in telling her Paani lene ke bahaane aa ja ki tera mera ek rasta. He persists Tujhe chaand ke bahaane dekhun ki chhat par aa ja goriye,  even though Vyjayanthimala demurs Mujhe chhedenge gali ke sab ladke.

2. Oye tu raat tu khadi thi chhat pe ni main samjha ki chaand nikla by Rafi and Usha Timothy from from Himalay Ki God Mein (1965), lyrics Anand Bakshi, music Kalyanji-Anandji

Kalyanji-Anandji get into the Bhangra mood allowing the lovers to shake their reserve. Manoj Kumar makes an opening by flattering Mala Sinha, Tu raat khadi thi chhat pe ni main samjha ki chaand nikla. He is a little impatient, Kal parson karte karte kat jaye na teri zindagi, but Mala Sinha is more understanding, such matters are not of a day or two, but they take years (barson). She is also wise enough to be careful; when he invites her for the mela, she is quite clear, Mele ka bahana hai tu chhedega akele mein.

3. Kahan chale ho ji pyar mein diwana kar ke main to neem taley aa gayi bahana kar ke by Shamshad Begum from Mohini (1957), lyrics Raja Menhdi Ali Khan, music N Dutta

It is not always the lady who is demure and shy. Here the hero for some reason wants to go away, but the lady would have none of it. She has come under the neem tree on some pretext, and declares brazenly, Kahan chale ho ji pyar mein diwana kar ke, main to neem taley aa gayi bahana kar ke.

4. Baat takun main teri kothe chadh ke aa ja mere baalma bahana kar ke by Suraiya from Naach (1949), lyrics Mulkraj Bhakhri, music Husnlal-Bhagatram

In this song too, Suraiya takes the initiative in going up the roof, and she calls her lover to come by making some bahana. She also peps him up, Achcha nahin duniya se dar dar ke, aa ja mere baalma bahana kar ke.

5. Ambua pe gaaye koeliya gaane, aa more baalam kisi bahaane by Zeenat Begum from Pagdandi (1947), lyrics DN Madhok, music Khursheed Anwar

The lady is quite restless since Jabse milaye naina baalam tose kuchh nahi soojhe maika, kuchh nahi bane mose. The koel’s singing torments her even more, and she makes a desperate plea to her baalam to come kisi bahaane.

6. Mujhe mil gaya bahana teri deed ka by Lata Mangeshkar from Barsaat Ki Raat (1960), lyrics Sahir Ludhiyanavi, music Roshan

Muslim socials had even more inhibitions. Eid gives an opportunity to Shyama to have दीद of her lover.

7. Chhip chhip kar mat dekho bhanwarji by Shanta Thakkar and Bharat Vyas from Man Ki Jeet (1944), lyrics Bharat Vyas, music SK Pal

The lady surely enjoys her lover seeing her secretly, but she has to make a proforma protest. The female singer is unknown, the male singer is the lyricist himself. I have to thank Sadanand Kamath for introducing this song at Atul Song A Day.

8. Kabhi aaj kabhi kal ka bahana ho gaya by SD Batish and Uma Devi from Taksaal (1956), lyrics Prem Dhawan, music Roshan

The bahana songs so far have been melodious, soulful, and at times folk-based. Now comes a unique bahana song, apparently picturised as a night club dance scene. Is Roshan influenced by OP Nayyar or C Ramchandra?

9. Ae mohabbat unse milne ka bahana ban gaya by Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar from Bazaar (1949), lyrics Qamar Jalalabadi, music Shyam Sundar

Now one of the greatest bahana songs, which has been mentioned on this blog several times. One of the best Rafi-Lata Mangeshkar duets, one can hear it endlessly.

10. Jana tha humse door bahane bana liye by Lata Mangeshkar from Adalat (1958), lyrics Rajendra Krishna, music Madan Mohan

The lovers generally resorted to bahana for meeting, but in this song the man leaves the lady on some pretext. One of the most soulful ghazals from the famed combination of Madan Mohan-Lata Mangeshkar.

11. Nainon ki nagri mein aa ke chale jana na karke bahana by Feroze Dastur and Amirbai Karnataki from Pujari (1946), lyrics Wali Saheb, music Hansraj Behl

In Jana tha humse door bahaane bana liye, the situation had reached a point of no return. In Nainon ki nagri mein aa ke it is not quite there, the lady buttonholes the man in the nick of time and pleads with him not to scoot on some bahana. The lover assures her Panghat pe aa ke nahi jayega pyasa/ Deepak pe aa ke nahi jata parwana, and finally they do set up a date under the shadow of the stars. Amirbai Karnataki needs no introduction. Feroze Dastoor was the gurubhai of Pt Bhimsen Joshi and Gangubai Hangal, having learned music from Sawai Gandharva with them. A leading vocalist of Kirana Gharana, Feroze Dastur also acted and sang in films. He and Amirbai sing a great duet in the debut film of Hansraj Bahal. Readers may recall this pair also sang a fabulous duet in Roshan’s debut film Neki Aur Badi (1949), Kyunji scent lagaya hai.

ए के जी प्रणाम
बहाने तो बहुत सारे हैं पर ये कुछ खास हैं :

यूँ ही करके बहाना चली आया करो (शाह बेहराम )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cGLD_K_EQw

What a very unusual and interesting theme this is, AK. I couldn’t think of a single song that fitted the ‘bahaana‘ theme when I started reading, though of course when I saw the songs, some were immediately obvious. Thanks for this!

3 N Venkataraman February 5, 2019 at 1:23 pm

AKji,
Is Umar me Chhat me chadna baki tha. Wah Janab, us ko bee aap puraa kar diya. Like I said in your last post, the unusual has become the usual. Nothing surprises us. And surprises have become routine. I would not hesitate to say I am really impressed, and please continue to gives us such pleasant surprises. Thanks for the Bahana. Seems to be an exciting one too, after the ride on the swing and romance with Pardesi. Would be swinging between the posts, mainly concentrating on this theme. Just I have browsed through the post. Will be back soon.

राकेशजी,
दुआ सलाम के लिए बहाने की क्या ज़रूरत. Talat-Asha duet was less heard, thanks for posting it. यूँ ही चुपके चुपके बहाने बना के is my great favourite. It is difficult to believe that it is sung by the music director Ravi. He was such a good singer.

5 AK February 5, 2019 at 2:17 pm

Madhu,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. You are right, in the first instance it is difficult to believe that there are so many bahana songs. But once I had a good number of songs, the theme seemed interesting.

6 AK February 5, 2019 at 2:20 pm

Venkataramanji,
Men are naughty at the age of sixty. You are never too old to go up to the roof for some fun. Thanks a lot for your appreciation.

7 Canasya February 5, 2019 at 2:30 pm

AKji:

Wonderful post with some songs that were new to me. Thanks. Here is one of my favourites, ‘Taa thaiya karte aana … ‘ (Lata, Geeta in ‘Panchayat’; MD: Iqbal Qureshi):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hfg5t6sCqNo

‘Bahana’ occurs in the first antaraa:

‘Tum saamne to aa jao, de denge dil nazrana
Dil kya hai jaan bhi le lo, aa jaana kar ke bahana’.

The song, of course, provides the perfect occasion for the entry of the hero!

8 Mehfil Mein Meri February 5, 2019 at 3:41 pm

What a cute, romantic and naughty, and interesting and unusual theme it is AKji!
This ‘bahana’ bussiness was so ubiquitous those days, in the world of Hindi film songs.
Can’t think of any song to add.

9 AK February 5, 2019 at 3:59 pm

Canasya,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Ta thaiya karke aana is my great favourite. And such a perfect bahana song – Aa jana karke bahana.

10 AK February 5, 2019 at 4:01 pm

Anup,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. But it required some effort to think of bahana songs.

11 Siddharth February 5, 2019 at 4:14 pm

AKji,
This is a another very interesting theme.
I was very late to comment on the earlier blockbuster posts but surely on time for this.
I believe making excuse is a natural phenomena. 🙂
Here are two songs that comes to my mind –

1. Yun Hi Dil Ne Chaha Tha – Suman Kalyanpur -Dil Hi To Hai

2. Ye Mulaqat Ek Bahana Hai

Akji,
In any situation or act or play, the entry is most important. With Ude jab jab zulfein teri you have made a grand entry. It could not have been any better and continued with the tempo with a fine selection of songs. Ae mohabbat unse milne ka bahana ban gaya, was an automatic selection for this post. Baat takun main teri kothe chadh ke aa ja mere baalma bahana, a typical Husnlal-Bhagatram composition and arrangements, is a good inclusion. Nainon ki nagri mein aa ke chale jana na karke bahana & Kabhi aaj kabhi kal ka bahana ho gaya were new to me. Enjoyed listening to your selction of songs.

Oh! Of course, you must have put a lot of efforts!
I didn’t mean it that way.
After having a look at the songs, I thought it was so ubiquitous. Still this theme never occurred to me and here also I couldn’t contribute a single song.
So the comment wasn’t supposed to overlook your efforts.
If it sounded so, I’m sorry. But it wasn’t of course my intention.

“Men are naughty at the age of sixty. You are never too old to go up to the roof for some fun.”
Very true Akji. Being 60 is no more as old as it used to be. We still love to experiment, tease …… let me leave at that. Even for drinking I look for a pretext.

Winter is yet to take leave; we are having an extended winter here. But when you have arrived, can the spring be far away! AKji says it will take some effort to find Bahana songs. But it seems it will throw up some unknown numbers too.

Waiting for Bhatiaji. It seems “Sir ji kal” strike karenge. Pradeepji too must be carpet-bombing anytime.

Wo tere pyar ka gham, Ik bahana tha Sanam. I do not think I have heard this song before. Thanks for posting it. Aaye Ho To Jaane Ka Bahana na milega is also a good addition. Lata’s song from Kangan was known to me, but you beat me to it. Will wait for your next lot.

How in the world do you come up with such unusual and enjoyable themes? Hats off!

Here’s a quite well known ‘bahaana’ song:

AK ji ;

What a post ! The first para of your article is what I have lived in my childhood [ around 1955]….open courtyards , big verandahs, all household activities on manjis[ desi cot]…..grinding of masalas , puddiney ki chatney , making juices from an hand operated local made juice maker fixed to the cot’s beam…..and ladder provided by CPWD store to reach for terrace for repair works related to seepage during rainy days . For us , however , it was a medium for flying kites on terrace and as also for catching the kites and their unclammed special threads [ lal kuaan manjha was famous as a sure cutter in kite flying matches].

For next para …..I suppose everyone has gone thru such experience …..I dare to term it as voyerism . The terrace of our times were just an reinforced concrete slab topped with water proofing by black Tar . How the architecture changes with time . We now have beautiful terrace garden and mini swimming pools besides beautiful layout area for party………………no one is seen during non party days . Music is loud and tasteless..

N Venkatraman ji, Arvinder Sharma ji ……I was busy all day long came late and saw 22 comments before me awaiting to be read and hear all the beautiful songs posted by each one of them . The pace has gone further than the previous articles and posts . Ms.Mumbaikar8 advise is good ….to take time going thru each comment and listening songs for their qualitative analysis.

As a starter two songs are here to enjoy …..

Siddharthji,
Thanks for the response and the song.
Yes, you are right and to prove your point Pradeepji has stormed into arena with four numbers. Only problem is I will have to get the links to listen to them and I will.
But I do not post all the songs in my reserve at a time. Sometimes I have a dozen or more in my reserve and many of them may just carry the concerned word and nothing more. Anyway, good, bad or worthy I do not post all of them in a go or two. There is no fun in it. One needs to give space for others. And when I find a few from my list posted by others, I feel glad. That gives scope for more participation and interaction. And if the posting is gradual (Bhatiaji has mentioned it) then we can listen to the songs and do justice to their efforts.
Bhatiaji too has arrived once again in the scene. Now it is fun time.

AK Ji, Venkatraman Ji Bhatia Ji
Many thanks for your excellent words mentioning me.
The posts and especially the comments or this post are par excellence, beginning with Rakesh Ji’s lovely initiation and progression of comments further on.
Now I had to go to border paar to add a couple of songs, and the first one has a Chhat including the word bahana
It’s a lovely Punjabi song, and I am sure Bhatia Ji would especially like it

Some songs are very close to qualifying criteria . They are rare and carry ingredients mentioned in your article ….but for the word…Bahana . Here is one such song from vintage era .

KS Bhatiaji @35,
Main jab bhi akeli hoti hun is such a great song. It does have elements of bahana.

@43,
Thanks for posting these wild dancing songs.

@52,
This is such a fantastic vintage male-female duet song. Mumtaz Ali achieved great fame for such songs dancing with different ladies. But it seems there are a good number of such songs by several other songs. A milestone song of this type is O jaanewale baalamwa by Naushad.

Aaj aadhi raat ko is also special. The male (actor)-singer Shyam Sundar we have met earlier in the review of 1947 songs, in which he sang a number of comic songs. But in this song he seems to be singing in a faux female voice. Did you notice that?

54 AK February 7, 2019 at 8:05 am

Arvinder Sharmaji @50,
You have made up your late arrival by exceptional songs. Kar kar ke bahane sanu mil mahi vai triggered memories of several unconnected songs I don’t know why. Is there some underlying unity in their tunes? One song that occurred to me again and again was Gore gore haathon mein menhdi racha ke from Prineeta (1953).
My mind jumped to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s Ankhiyan udeek diya.

Koi kar ke bahana sanu mil is an admirable addition. Chhat bhi hai, Chahat bhi hai, Chand bhi hai aur Bahana bhi hai. This is the first song in the comment section to have all the elements. Only the word Chhat is missing.

Dollywood [ smoky mountains, usa ] is a famous place for live music , theater and art besides playfull areas . A must tourist place for art lover.

We on our side have Madhubala , a beauty that lives in everyone’s heart. One of my fav. song is here which is a gem of a melody sung beautifully by Lata ji …..flavoured by honey dipped sweet instrumental interludes music by Shankar Jaikishan. I know this one is AK’s choice also.

Yes. Mumtaz Ali ruled the stage songs of the 40s . With rural background stage art it is really a walk thru old times. The stage art set ups of the movies of 30s , 40s and 50s are surely studies for incremental progressive art. Later, Yakub adding on the fun . The western touch went with Gope .

Shyam Sunder singing in female voice was a great surprise to me too.

I would post a few minor songs. I call them minor songs because the word Bahana occurs in a passing phase and not exactly in synch with the theme.
To begin with here is one. In the following song you will find the word Bahana in the 3rd stanza occurring once.
aakash aaj hain tu
kal ki magar na jane
kal ki magar na jane
karlega kaid koi
kitne bhi kar bahane
kitne bhi kar bahane

AK Ji, Anup Ji
Thanks again for liking the songs, and I concur with your comments that the Wardat song evokes many memories of different songs.
I think Anup Ji’s choice, Gori sasural chali is closer to the song, but there are many more, which I can’t remember, which are similarly composed.
And I wasn’t exactly late this time, with my post at 18
Many thanks dear Venkatraman Ji and Bhatia Ji for liking the songs, and Venkatraman Ji’s lovely analysis of the songs is music to the ears.
Angdai teri hai bahana has been posted by dear Rakesh Ji in his opening comment in the post, the third song.

AKji, Bhatiaji, Arvinderji, Arvindji
I came across this song, Kar Ke Bahane assan raat sari sung by Martab Ali of Pakistan. I liked the rendition and the soulful flute accompaniment. And Of course it has the word Bahana in its Mukhda. Although I could not understand the language, I felt the word Bahana used in the lyrics is appropriate to this post. Hope this song fits the post. Would my dear Punjabi friends help me to understand the song. I think the Raag is Shivaranajani.

Mumbaikarji,
There are several versions of the above mentioned song available on YT. You posted a song from the 1947 film Seedha Raasta. The above mentioned song Kar Ke Bahane assan raat sari was also rendered by Runa Laila for a 1974 Punjabi (Pakistani) film by the same name Seedha Raasta. I am posting this version also. This one is good but liked the Martab Ali version more.

Since two of the long absentees Venkataramanji and Sharmaji have already made appearance, I thought I should also join. First of all thanks to AK for such a fantastic topic and songs which has generated a lot of nostalgic feelings. Only a person like you with grassroot experience could have come up with this topic and related what went in the eras gone by. I have a lot of interesting stories – being one closely connected to village life – which I would relate if I get a green signal from you.

So far as songs are concerned most of those which came to mind have already been covered, yet I would try to make it as interesting as I could.

First this song from our he-man ‘ye kali jab talak phool ban kar khile’. This song I would have posted even if the word ‘bahana’ was not included, because in this song is a live bahana song. I think we should post all such bahana songs even without the word ‘bahana’. In this song though the word appears in the 3rd antara.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTJrtn5BWzc

The second song is also from the he-man from Jugnu ‘gir gaya jhumka’. In this song the word bahana appears in the mukhda itself. Dharmendra was entreating in the first song but here he is more pressing and rejecting the bahanas.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZ2k5ZjmLj8

Now in these songs the issue is baali umar and the objection comes from the shy female side which is natural. But, is that always the case. Look here in this song ‘abhi kamsin ho nadan ho’ from Aaya Toofan the male is invoking the same baali umar and making a bahana.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNsJ5WZa5PQ

The same kamsin bahana was made by Rafi for our jubilee star in film Aayi Milan Ki Bela. Both films came in the same year and are entered back to back at nos 294 and 295 in vol IV of HFGK.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-hTvBEAOpk

Now look at this transformed Hema Malini. To Dharmendra she was playing the coy mistress, but to the Sanyasi Manoj Kumar she is forthright though she declares she is of baali umar.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgdTu3iOHro

83 Hans February 9, 2019 at 1:46 am

Oh Bhatiaji by posting this Kala Samundar song which my great favourite you have reduced one song from my theme of males making bahanas.

But, here is another kind of male bahana from Waqt, ‘din hain bahaar ke’
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q20zozCq0jU

In my last post I posted two songs of the transformed Hema. But, do you think she was alone. Here are two different songs from Rakhi. First, ‘dil ki kitab kori hai’ from Yaar Mera
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBmy-HFBJ0w

and then ‘ankhon ankhon men baat hone do’ from Ankhon Ankhon Men
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCOSfVFVy1k

Now here is this gem from Ishq Par Jor Nahin ‘ye dil diwana hai’ in which the lovers are not making any bahana but since it contains the word ‘bahana’ it would qualify.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OtrUjGu4FU

Now this is a different type of song where both lovers are asking each other to invent some bahana when people ask about their meeting. ‘Ye duniya wale poochhenge’ from Mahal

I was absent for a long time but I have been closely watching your posts. Though you are a later entrant, but you have carved out a special place for you. You are posting great songs like Bhatiaji and for me you have a lot of similarities with Bhatiaji. Your enthusiasm, superb recall power (which has been mentioned by AK a couple of times) and also a positive attitude. Above all your tastes are so similar to me. I have become a fan of you and as a complement I offer a gift. Kindly visit comment 350 in Open House and you will find something useful.

Ak ji ,

U hav put both the words —
बहाना / छत in ” — ” in the title .
My friend Venkataraman ji has already posted a song having the word छत .
So let me add my 2 words .

I remember a scene from the fantastic movie ” Raazi ” .
Sehmat ( Alia Bhat ) brutally tries to kill the most faithful servant
( Arif Zakeriya ) nd informs her boss ( Jaydeep Ahlawat ) saying

” छत टपक रहीं थी , मरम्मत कर दी हैं !!! ”

Nd a popular song about छत
Rafi singing with Usha Timothy in
” हिमालय की गोद में ”
” तू रात खडी थी छतपें
नी मैं समझा के चाँद निकला ” .

I m going to give the link for the song in next post .

Mumbaikar8 @58,
I would not like to speculate the singer of Ulajh gayi ho sainya tose ankhiyan. Some readers have done it. I can only say she is not one of the well-known singers. I have reservations on Parul Ghosh too. Manik Verma has been mentioned. Another classical singer Nirmala Devi could be a possibility.

I too had Gori sasural chali in mind, but I often make a slip between this song and Gore gore hathon mein mehndi rachake. Thanks for mentioning Jagjit Kaur’s iconic song, of course, this has to be closer, coming from the mitti of Punjab.

Dil to hai diwana na, Maane na bahana na is such a fabulous song. I am surprised that I am hearing it for the first time. Thanks a lot for posting it.

Venkataramanji @76, 77,
Kar ke bahaane asaan raat sari is a very nice song. Thanks a lot.

Sometimes you would like let your guard down and be naughty quietly, but it seems the enthusiastic SoY-ers would like to make a gala show of it. I hope that does not deter you from showing your wild side. 🙂

92 AK February 9, 2019 at 1:32 pm

Hands @82, 83,
What a grand comeback. Thanks a lot for your very intelligent comments. Who could have thought proper ladies like Hema Malini and Rakhi can become so brazen and overrule the bahane of the hulks!

You have made interesting analysis of baali umar being used as defence by both the genders to ward off the other side’s overtures.

Baali umar must be occurring in folk songs of different parts. In Bhojpuri Chaita (the folk masculine version of the more familiar and feminine Chaiti associated with singers like Girija Devi), there is very naughty song describing the dilemma of a lady whose piya has gone pardes. She rues to her sakhi whom she can confide in with the matters of heart as her devar is still of tender age.

I think AK does not need “Bahana” to write up a post!

It just comes out from him like a rainbow after the rain and sunshine!
When one post gets jaded SoY members wonder what’s next?

And they do not have to wait for a long. A post comes out with the same freshness and various clues and points to encourage the readers to find the songs and discussion point.

96 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty February 9, 2019 at 6:29 pm

In a curious coincidence, the Banjara discussion by Shalan Lal ji had made me look into the songs of BANJARIN,1960.
BANJARIN, Music by Pardesi!!! But, there weren’t any Pardesi items. Not to disappoint me, there IS a song relevant to the present topic.

Geeta Dutt, Mukhesh; Pandit ( again! Pardesis in their own land after the mass exodus from Kashmir…of course,I know he may not be a Kashmiri.) Madhur; Pardesi.
Dil tumne diya,Dil humne diya
Phir bhi duniya jale toh hum kya kare..

….Door kaise rahogi meri yaad se..
..
Is bahane liya hai dil mehmaan se..

https:// YouTube.be/ fFUof5n7xyo
( The onus of finding a link is once again on dear N Venkataraman ji!)

I see Pardesi has scored music for KHOOFIYA MAHAL,1964 and BANKE LAAL,1972
The three Mangeshkar sisters,Rafi, Shamshad Begum, Suman Kalyanpur, Mahendra Kapoor,Kamal Barot,Umadevi( credited as Tun Tun) are the other singers who sang for him. Who is he? Pseudonym of someone? Has there been a discussion on him earlier on SOY?
Knowledgeable friends,do clarify.

Hans ji, Arvinder ji, Venkatraman ji , Dr. Shetty ji…& all of SoY’s patrons;

Thanks every one for the nice words each one transmitted from time to time .

Shetty ji …Some time I blush at my own fault ….the fault that made other happy. Most happy are the cheeks which otherwise are to wait for long as catalyst of attractions. Blush for few seconds and live better for 24 hours !

I am sure we all are on energetic mode and enjoying songs posted….some digged more to find hidden ones and some surprises too. Thanks each one for liking the …..Meri Tasveer leke kya karoge . This qawali was very famous during our college days. The other song….Hamen to loot liya mil ke husn waloan ne…..was equally famous . The song was inacted by juniors in the concluding fresher’s party.

A very interesting theme,a beautiful write up and so many beautiful songs brought out by the learned group members. Great !

As it has been decided that the word ‘ ‘bahana’ need not figure in the songs under this theme, many more songs would be posted.

In this duet from Ragini (1958) , the male voice had to be Kishore as he himself was acting and the female voice had to be Asha as the music director is OP Nayyar.

Kishore is not willing to accept Padmini’s love despite her begging him very earnestly for the flimsy ‘bahana’ that he is a Bengali and she is a Madrasi . This was the culture then though there were many exceptions.

https://youtu.be/8x2MqmcymRg

Though clad in a saree , yet Padmini could easily sprint .

Beemar-e-mohabbat ka itna sa fasana hai/ Marta hai koi tum par jeene ka bahana hai is a wonderful song. I discovered it a few days back and was planning to post it as some kind of finale. You have narrowly beaten me to it. I am impressed with you.

What a grand come back. You have stormed the arena like a true pro with your stock of songs and clear-cut and well- defined comments. Ab ye mehfil Khoob jam jayegi. Thank you Hansji for those wonderful songs.

Arunji @97
And Arunji, who very rarely posts songs, too have joined the party. Dil Dhoondhata hai is a nice addition.

Bhismapitamaha has arrived. Almost all the Rathis, Atirathis and Maharathis of SoY have arrived at the scene. Waiting for Ranganji and Jignesh to fill the remaining void.

Here is another song rendered by Bhupinder Singh
the word Bahana occurs at the 2nd stanza

din khali khali bartan hai
din khali khali bartan hai
aur raat hai jaise andha kuan
in suni andheri aankho se
aansu ki jagah aata hain dhuan
jine ki vajah to koyi nahi

‘Kal na pare’ is almost always the choice for the ‘chhota khayal’ when it comes to performances of Raga Shankara by the Sawai Gandharva branch of the Kirana gharana. The first two lines of the ‘bandish’ are:

‘Jab se aat mori baali umariya
Ab to aayi nayi bahariya’

Here is a rendition of this ‘bandish’ by Sawai Gandharva himself:

Polar vortex had descended in these parts and made everyone inactive. In these days of extreme weather, SOY has also been ensnared and song downpour is like a cloud burst. Still struggling to listen to them. I have absolutely no competence to say anything looking at the olympean standards of practically every one. It was a steady downpour during the heydays of old warhorse Bhatiaji. Dr. Shetty gatecrashed and brought in a storm with him. Arvinderji comes now and then with a verve comparable to an elephant trunk like twisting tornado which I had occasion to enjoy here in USA. In between falls flurries carpeting the floor in white and I will categorise Venkataramanji in it. Hansji is like a hail carrying wind depositing ice balls on the ground and gone before one can realise he was in. Jignesh is like a tranquil ocean and only an under water quake common around Indonesian islands would make him stir and jump around like a flying fish in the wake of a ocean liner. AK, the great stage manager, is Zeus at Olympean mountain orchestrating all these. I am enjoying this bounty from all with profuse thanks.

Hello All

I want to present a lyric from the film Bhakt Surdas and lyric by Surdas himself. I think there is a Bahana in the denial in this lyric song without mention the word “Bahana”.

मैया मोरी
मैया मोरी
मैं नहीं माखन खायो

• Movie: Bhakt Surdas
• Singer(s): K L Saigal
• Music Director: Gyan Dutt
• Lyricist: Soordas
• Actors/Actresses: Khursheed, K L Saigal
• Year/Decade: 1942, 1940s

There is also similar song written by Rajinder Krishn in the film “Charandas 1977” composed by Rajesh Roshan with equal strength of Hyan Dutt and sung by Mukesh with the same spirit of Saigal.

Have a good time

D P Rangan ji .;

We all are half a globe apart . It seems you have a powerful telescope to watch the activities and pace at which we all are playing like cricket series . ……Big brother watching !!….Overall a nice appraisal and a perfect screenplay.

During my childhood I used to make spiral spring telescope using 35mm film strips rolls ….which I used to buy from the mobile street vendor [ Khilone wala on bike] . It was fun watching thru the instrument even without any lens . My daily allowance of two annas was enough to buy toys of my interest such as ; reading lenses, view masters and film slides , small cars easy to dismentle and assemble …..and so on. Watching small stories on Bio-scope ….sound effects provided with 78 rpm hmv large conic hood speakers was a great experience …..every frame like a cinemascope wide angle view . All these elements shaped us all in the family as a film and music jurists ….ready to give details of Lyricists and MDs at the stroke of the prelude music.

I am lucky to have the company of so many friends who I presume must have had similar experience in their childhood.

AK
Yes this baali umar is always mentioned in folk as well as marriage songs. In hindi films this topic is very popular. Our shashtras talk about ‘shodasi’. Now this proper lady talk is interesting. Rakhi gave an outrageous swimming pool scene in Sharmilee, but, later after films like Tapasya, her acting talent became talk of the town, she disowned that scene and tried to convince people that her body double was used.
I like contrasts, that is why I posted some contrast songs. In our college days during a study tour we visited Chandigarh and Bhakhra. In Chandigarh we 5 friends saw two back to back films of Navin Nischal Sawan Bhadon and Ganga Tera Pani Amrit in that order. In the first he was aggresive in the song ‘kaan men jhumka’. And in the second we saw him in submission in the song ‘o ladke makhan se’. The contrast was hilarious. Here are the two songs, though not connected to the theme.

A perfect Bahana song. Arvinderji took the onus of performing the “Pavitra Kartavya” by providing the right link to the song on himself.
Arvinderji @ 126
Listened to the songs. Apni nazar se is a nice song. Did you notice, Nutan was listening to the song from the chhat. BTW there another good Bahana song in the same film and you will find the word Bahana in the second stanza.

Meri gali me aanaa karke koi bahana
pyaar kaa dip jalaake dil kaa mahal chamakana
o aajaa chanda aaja chadaa chale daal tore gale
bayan gori gori chhun-chhun-chhun baaje payal

Chhun Chhun Chhun Baaje Paayal by Lata Mangeshkar, film Hum Log (1951), lyrics Udhav Kumar, music Roshan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XNxU8LNOGc

And a minor Bahana song from the same film sung by Lata Mangeshkar again.
Bahana occurs in the second stanza and the lady is on the Chhat.

Chali ja chali ja chali ja, chhod ke duniya
gamo ki duniya, aaho ki duniya
…………
yaha koyi nahi apna, naa ghar apna naa dar apna
dilasa bhi bahana hai, satane kaa rulane kaa

Kaun Jaane Har bahane is also lovely song. Initially I thought Shakila (I suppose) moved to the chhat, and then I realized that they were singing from adjacent balconies. Thanks for the wonderful songs.

arvindersharma ji,
Torrent of songs. I had not heard many of them. Thanks also for playing N Venkataraman ji’s role of link provider for my songs.
ksbhatia ji, enjoying your posts…as always.
D P Rangan ji,
Do stay warm. We need our weathered ( to be read in the sense of wise, not otherwise) Weather Man to brave all weathers and come in often like a soft scented, musical breeze.

Came across two Holi songs from 1966 to fit two themes: Bahana and Pardesi!

BIRADARI
Rafi, Suman Kalyanpur, Manna Dey; Prem Dhawan; Chitragupt.

Ararara Rang do sabhi ko rang ek rang mein
Aayee Rangeen Holi re…
…..
…..
Aao chada le ke Rang desi ke Pardesi uthar jaaye…

Handsome villain Pran is being targeted… seems to be Vilayat returned.

DAAKU MANGAL SINGH
Rafi, Shamshad Begum; AB,LP.

Aayee Holi ka tyohar
Leke rangon ki bahaar…
….
Kahan jaati ho Gori bahana karke
Chodoge kya Deewana karke…

How many songs has Shamshad Begum sung for Mumtaz? And for Lakshmikant Pyarelal?

134 ksbhatia February 13, 2019 at 7:59 pm

Mr. S Joseph @132;
Yes more than 100 songs and still counting . The backlog of songs unheard prevents me to look for more . Needless to say I am still in enjoying mode but suddenly from somewhere a melody jumps up which thrills me to enjoy it to the maximum recalling and connecting my past thru the flow of the melody. Thanks for chhoo mantar song …..waiting for more of OPN and C Ramchandra songs.

N Venkatraman ji @131;

I was on medical tour for my half yearly check up and update on prescription vis a vis various tests .

I told my doctor I don’t feel any pain when I am struck by a melody.

Venkat ji you made me relaxed by a beautiful soft melody at its very best…..listening to …chali ja chali ja chali ja…from Hum Log [1951] . ….and the result is my reports are excellent ….a signal to continue to enjoy life as rosy as it is now.

My eldest sister used to sing this song in perfect harmony and myself at 5 used to listen as passionately . From that day onwards I was my sister’s best listener bhaiya . Now this song i am going to pass on to her for that beautiful recall of the past. Old songs always bring back golden period of our lives. The Lyrics are just honey cut …creating beautiful pain.

Hans , Arvinder , Venkatraman, Shetty, Rangan, AK, Joseph [Ji’s], Shalan Lal and Mumbaikar Ji’s ….and all of SoY active members;

You pass your day in a song and whole life waits for more. The melody waits to be heard and listening is a great tribute to all that made to be like such. SoY is …and has been….a great up holder of respect and values among each one of us….and this unique platform have staged many intellectual perceptions thru inputs at various incidents adding to time and travels thru experiences all of us shared as well . Some time sharing props of the bygone area brought surprises too. Vintage cars , old banglows , buggies , carts, flowers, birds, streets, …..and what not . All adding to give us a nice viewscape , sometime real sometime imaginary .

I propose a vote of thanks to AK ji for his untiring dedicated excellent work that made us all what we are today… a very well connected musical family.

Now a song that speaks of his merit in every department…..

Koi kisika deewana na bane….Lata…Sargam [1950]…CR

Pradeepji @ 133
Vasant Ritu is around the corner but Shith Ritu is reluctant to bid adieu. Holi is more than a month away, but you have presaged Holi. Although not exactly a Bahana song, Holi provides enough Bahana for Chhed-Chhad and leg pulling. Here is the link to song from Biradari (1966).

And the link to the other song,
Aayee Holi ka tyohar
Leke rangon ki bahaar…
….
Kahan jaati ho Gori bahana karke
Chodoge kya Deewana karke…
By Md.Rafi & Shamshad Begum, film Daku Mangal Singh (1966), lyrics Anand Bakshi, music Laxmikant-Pyarelal

The answer to both the questions you have posed is two. Besides the song mentioned by you, Shamshad Begum sang for LP in the 1965 film Lutera; another duet, Patli Kamar Nazuk Umar Are Hat, with Kamal Barot.

Mumtaz lip-synched for Shamshad Begum only on one more occasion, in the film Qawali ki Raat (1964); another duet with Md.Rafi, Jaate Jaate Ik Nazar Bhar Dekh Lo Dekh Lo.

But in the same year Mumtaz and Shamshad came together in the film Rustom e Hind. But Shamshad sang for Helen (looks like Helen).
I think it can be passed as a Bahana song and the word Bahana also occurs in the last stanza.

Bhatiaji @ 135
“I don’t feel any pain when I am struck by a melody.”
Very true. Even a song sung in pathos induces a sort of pleasure, a pleasure of different kind, what I often say Pleasure in pain. And you have said it in your last line.
I am glad that you enjoyed the song and it made you feel relaxed. And I am all the more glad that your medical reports have turned out excellent.
And it gives me immense pleasure that I could in a very nominal way act as a catalyst (rather the song) in your recall of your relationship with your elder sister. Thanks for sharing your cherished memories.

@136
I sincerely appreciate the way in which you have put words to your thought and feelings.
No words are enough to express our gratitude to Akji and I know he will respond in his own style and grace.

And it is past mid night. and today is Madhubala’s birth anniversary. Expecting a few Bahana songs from her films
Good night.

Dear KS Bhatiaji, N Venkataramanji and all the friends of SoY,
I am extremely blessed that I became a facilitator for bringing so many great music lovers, ज्ञानीs and good people at one platform. From where I started it is difficult to believe where we have reached. I have gained enormously and thank you all for this.

Venkataramanji,
The dancer in the song from Rustam e hind is madhumati.
She was Helen’s look alike.

According to me the singer of the Seedha Raasta song is Raj Kumari. She has shown a lot of variety in her singing. In the cassette days I bought two cassettes of her songs and I was surprised by her variety.

AKji,
And the loving members of SoY,

“Chadh gayi chadh gayi chadh gayi, Angurki Beti”, Sorry, not Angur ki Beti, par Chhat ka Nasha Phir Chadh Gayi!
Like the Betal in the Betala Panchavimshati, I am back at the Chhat. Such is the allurement for the “Chhat”.

Time and again we will revive our memories of the glory of the “Chhat” during the bygone days. “Chhat”had a significant role in our lives and held special memories that each of us would like to relive, recollect and rediscover its many joys. Be the budding romance with the girl next door, or getting drenched in first rains of the year; the pranks played on the neighbours, or just sitting under the starry sky, looking out on to the horizon, the chhat is associated with many unforgettable memories of one’s life.

While rummaging I came across this series of films by Ambuja Cement for its digital campaign “Chhat Pe Milte Hain” for promoting its premium brand cement. They were based on true events that took place on rooftops

The first film was released in July 2017 and was based on a real life love story – “Guptaji ki Kahaani”. The film follows a charming couple through the streets of old Ahmedabad, while the husband tries to re-live his fondest memories. Just when the couple reaches their destination, the Gupta couple finds their true love on the Chhat. As if reliving my fondest memory! And the song too, at the end, “O mere Hamrahi , mere bah Thame chalna”? You too would love it.

The second film was launched around Independence Day in 2017. This short film was titled “Salim aur Shankar ki Kahaani”. Based on a true story, the film was shot in Bokaro. This must see short film starts with the mukhda “Sonaari Dharati Rakhe, Chandiro Aasmaan” (Hope I have got the lyrics right), and ends with a wonderful short rendition of “Saare Jahaan se Achha, Hindustaan Hamaara”.

The third film was released during December 2017 or January 2018 titled Chhatein. Chhatein is a five-minute film. This entire film is held together with a beautiful poetry penned and recited by none other than Gulzar. The film reminds us of the many wonderful memories of the chhat that we all have and celebrates the roof as a place without walls where relationships were strengthened, bonds were built. Where family gathered and where neighbourhoods became communities. The film was shot in Lucknow, Udaipur and Varanasi.

Venkataramanji @145, 146, 147,
Oh, very moving stories of chhat. I was wrong in suggesting that it is a featureless place in the house. Though lacking in superficial embellishments it is a place of immense possibilities of relationships. Thanks a lot for mentioning and linking these beautiful videos. Very creative campaign for Ambuja Cement.
