Vasant Desai Part 4 (post-1950s): His ‘other’ female singers

22 December 2022

Continuing the series of tributes to Vasant Desai, the final tribute on his 47th Remembrance Day (9 June 2012 – 22 December 1975)

Vasant Desai

When I started writing my tribute to Vasant Desai to fill up a noticeable gap on SOY, I didn’t know how many articles I would need to cover his career to my satisfaction. I knew it would be more than one, because he straddled both the Vintage Era (1930s and 1940s) and the Golden Era (1950s and 60s) and he was multi-faceted having acted and sang in his early films, besides being a renowned music director. Sometime in the Vintage Era he gave up acting and singing. I have covered all the facets of his enormous talent in the Vintage Era in Part 1 of my tribute. In the post-50s period he confined himself only to music direction and made a mark for himself. This was a period when a hundred flowers bloomed, and to do justice to Vasant Desai, I had to continue my series by writing on his songs for major singers.

Part 2 of my tribute focussed on male singers, including their duets. In male singers he did not have any overwhelming preference for any particular singer, though we discovered that he never used Mukesh. In female singers, Lata Mangeshkar’s dominating presence was obvious. He had so many iconic songs for her that the Part 3 of my tribute was devoted to his best songs for Lata Mangeshkar, which also included her duets with other female singers. A final browsing through his songs revealed that he gave some great songs for the ‘other’ female singers too, which deserved a post. Thus, as a concluding part of my series of tribute to Vasant Desai, here are his best songs for the ‘other’ female singers on his 47th Remembrance Day (9 June 2012 – 22 December 1975). This would also include ‘other’ female singers duets with ‘other’ female singers.

1. Ambua ki daari se bole ri koeliya by Jayshree from Dahej (1950), lyrics Shams Lakhnavi, music Vasant Desai

He had given a song to Lata Mangeshkar in 1949, which was quite melodious, but in Dahej (1950) Vasant Desai made Jayshree, the female lead as its lead singer. This song is so good that I would not accuse Vasant Desai of partiality to his wife.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qy54LAUc5zY

2. Ae kaale baadal bol, tu kyun itarata hai by Shamshad Begum from Dahej (1950), lyrics Shams Lakhanavi, music Vasant Desai

But, interestingly, Vasant Desai gave this jhoola song picturised on Jayshree to Shamshad Begum. Shamshad Begum also got to sing an excellent choodiwaali song: Oui! Choodi dheere pahna chodiwali ho, kahin munna sa dil na hachke.

3. Taqdeer banaanewale ne kaisi taqdeer banai hai by Pushpa Hans from Sheesh Mahal (1950), lyrics Ajiz, music Vasant Desai

It is surprising that Vasant Desai seems to have forgotten Lata Mangeshkar altogether in 1950 when she was already emerging as The Female Playback singer. Sheesh Mahal had female songs by Geeta Roy (Dutt), Shamshad Begum and Pushpa Hans. Pushpa Hans would be a new voice for most readers, but here she is singing an outstanding song which seems to be with us forever.

4. Nazron mein samaane se qaraar aa na sakega by Rajkumari from Hyderabad Ki Naazneen (1952), lyrics Shams Wasti, music Vasant Desai

This song by Rajkumari was not known to me, but it is a superbly melodious song, picturised on Nigar Sultana.

5. Nanhe munne raja ki saalgirah aayi re by Shamshad Begum and Asha Bhosle from Aanand Bhavan (1953), lyrics SM Yusuf, music Vasant Desai

This song has everything you expect from a birthday song for a small child.

6. Kahan baaje Kisan tori baansuriya by Unknown Female Singer from Jhansi Ki Rani (1953), lyrics Pt. Radheshyam, music Vasant Desai

The scene is of a carnival on the occasion of Janmashtami (?). A flat stage has been created on one of the bullock carts on which there are a group of dancers and singers singing this excellent song. This YT link wrongly mentions Rafi as the singer; while we are grateful to the uploader, he must have been drowsy while mentioning the details. Far from Rafi, it is sung by an (unknown) female.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsKGE9xwG9I

7. Ughadat navras rang dhang laya gat by Asha Bhosle from Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje (1955), lyrics Traditional, music Vasant Desai

In the midst of iconic songs in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar in this film, Vasant Desai gives a wonderful dance song in the voice of Asha Bhosle. The scene seems to depict the familiar scene of the celestial apsara Menaka distracting Vishwamitra from his penance.

8. Meri aan Bhagwan kan kan se ladi hai to tumse bhi ladegi, to tumse bhi aaj ladegi, meri baat tumhein rakhni padegi by Geeta Dutt from Toofan Aur Diya (1956), lyrics Bharat Vyas, music Vasant Desai

This is a unique song addressed to Bhagwan. The child commands Him that his pride has always fought for itself, he will fight with You, too, to make sure You do for him what is right. No cringing for this boy!

9. Kanha na chhedo na chhedo bansuri mai to aa gayi by Asha Bhosle from Do Phool (1958), lyrics Hasrat Jaipuri

I thank myself for looking up Vasant Desai’s songs by the ’other’ female singers. We are all aware of many Radha-Krishna songs. This sweet song by Asha Bhosle must rank very high.

10. Ek do teen gin bhai gin, ye duniya badi kathin, Is duniya mein hote hain hansne ke bhi din, rone ke bhi hain din by Aarti Mukherjee from School Master (1959), lyrics Pradeep, music Vasant Desai

If you are looking for sarcasm in songs, this must rank very high. A nice song by Aarti Mukherjee who had come with great potential through a music competition, but didn’t go far.

11. Tohri ungli se Krishna kaisi re jhar rahi rakt ki dhara by Suman Kalyanpur from Ladki Sahyadri Ki (1966), lyrics Bharat Vyas, music Vasant Desai

There is no Lata Mangeshkar in Ladki Sahyadri Ki. Asha Bhosle has sung a number of good songs in the film. Suman Kalyanpur has sung only one song in the film. Blood is flowing from Krishna’s finger. The woman sings this song in a mood of pathos. Suman Kalyanpur has sung it in the style of non-film bhajans she is renowned for.

12. Valmiki ke mahakavya ki..Dharti ki paavan putri ki hum katha sunaate hain by Asha Bhosle and Usha Timothy from Ram Rajya (1967), lyrics Bharat Vyas, music Vasant Desai

I have mentioned earlier that every screen adaptation of Ramayan story has this type of stock song depicting Lav-Kush narrating the story in Ram’s court from the perspective of Sita who was banished to the forest second time on some calumny against her chastity, having been abducted by Ravan and lived in Ashok Vatika in Lanka. She was given shelter by the sage Valmiki where she gave birth to the twins. Vasant Desai’s Sampoorna Ramayan had the Lata Mangeshkar-Asha Bhosle duet Bharat ki Sitaaon ke dukhde jab tak honge choorna nahin/ Hey Ram tumhari Ramayan tab tak hogi sampoorna nahin. In this one Asha Bhosle and Usha Timothy sing this beautiful song which starts with the recital:

Valmiki ke mahakavya ki sun lo amritvaani
Ramchandra ki amar katha Sita ki karun kahani

This sets the context and the pathos-filled story which stirs the heart of Ram and the people.

13. Bol re papihara by Vani Jairam from Guddi (1971), lyrics Gulzar, music Vasant Desai

Now we come to Guddi (1971) in which the two songs by Vani Jairam – Humko man ki shakti dena; and Bol re papihara – set off tremors of gossip that the new singer would dethrone Lata Mangeshkar from her pedestal. It seems Vani Jairam had a third song, too, Hari bin kaise jiyun re in the film, but that is not remembered today. Bol re papihara is a traditional bandish in Raag Miyan Ki Malhar. The antaras are Gulzar’s creation.

14. Meha barasane laga hai aaj ki raat by Asha Bhosle from Shaque (1976), lyrics Gulzar, music Vasant Desai

I end this post with this beautiful song by Asha Bhosle from Vasant Desai’s last film. Vasant Desai did give some absolutely great songs by ‘other’ female singers.

Beautiful list AKji.
Thanks for the treat!
His other female singers mainly were Asha Bhosle, Geeta Dutt. In the early years, Amirbai karnataki, Zohrabai Ambalewali also had a few songs with Vasant Rao.
Here’s a song from Shakuntala by Amirbai Karnataki

https://youtu.be/DNDfRAs1JNU

I know you have already covered them in the part 1.

I’ll also add,
Baar baar bagiya mein Koyal Na Bole

The third part was by Lata Mangeshkar.

Selections of songs are appropriate and include rare songs that were not heard often. Title song from Toofan aur Diya(Ye kahani hai diye aur toofan ki ) , duet from Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje and Mausi (Nain so nain and tim tim tim ) could be possible additions seeing their popularity.

Anup @1,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. In Sampoornanand Ramayan he seems to have created many songs in the voice of ‘other’ female singers.

Chanda dhale pankha jhale is an outstanding song. I should have included it.

KB @2
Thanks a lot. There are many nice songs by Lata Mangeshkar, which were included in Part 3 of my tribute (Hyperlink given in the write-up. This was devoted to the ‘other’ female singers to complete the picture.

Kumari Faiyyaz has a two part song in SHAQUE.

Do naino ke pankh laga ke
Man pakhi ud jaaye…

Who is this Kumari Faiyyaz, whose name I remember from ALAAP and SHATRANJ KE KHILARI ?

Registered email. Still, no notifications, AK ji.

Oh! I Googled.
She is such a big name in Marathi Rangabhoomi! I always wondered who she was!!!

7 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty December 23, 2022 at 9:39 pm

Came across a Non Film Gazal of Kumari Faiyyaz with Vasant Desai. Lyrics by Gulzar.

1971.

Ek mulaqat ho gayee hoti
Baat kuch aur ho gayee hoti…

8 Sivanandam December 24, 2022 at 6:12 pm

Good one.
Vani Jayaram had some excellent songs in Tamil & Telugu films and was awarded the National award for best female playback singer twice ,if I remember correctly. Was a bit disappointed to see in # 13 just a line mentioning her.
Also , today being 24th Dec , was expecting something great in SOY…..

9 AK December 24, 2022 at 7:41 pm

Dr Shetty @5,
You should be getting email notification. Others have started getting it. Once you get the mail for confirmation, please do confirm.

@6,
Thanks a lot for this unique information. I thought of her primarily as a classical singer.

@7,
Ek mulaqat ho gayi hoti has now become my search song.

10 AK December 24, 2022 at 7:44 pm

Mr Sivanandam @8,
I appreciate your frank comments.

11 Anita December 25, 2022 at 12:33 pm

AKji,
Had to search quite a bit to see if there was any other female singer who has not been included. Luckily found a children’s movie -Rani aur Lalpari(1975) where Dilraj Kaur has sung some songs for Vasant Desai.
One of them is Ammi ko Chummi
Here’s the YouTube link
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ve56dOgqTk8

12 AK December 26, 2022 at 7:47 am

Anita,
Dilraj Kaur’s song Ammi ko chummi is a very nice children’s song. I have not heard her much. It seems Vasant Desai had some expertise in composing children’s songs. After more than two decades he re-invented Ashok Kumar as a singer in Aashirwad (1968) – Railgaadi railgaadi.

13 Sivanandam December 26, 2022 at 11:05 am

Sharing two links to Vasant Desai’s superb compositions in Marathi . First one is a solo by Vani Jayaram Sukache Sukh Srihari Mukh by Sant Namdeo and second one is ” Runanubandhachya ” written by Bal Kolhatkar which was sung by Vani Jayaram with the legendary Pt Kumar Gandharva

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HN5PD7yagko

Vani Jayaram made the right decision to shift to South where she got the right recognition she deserved.

14 AK December 26, 2022 at 11:41 am

Mr Sivanandam,
Great songs you have posted. Hindi film song world was not Vani Jairam’s natural habitat. You are right, she made a mark elsewhere.

15 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty December 27, 2022 at 9:32 pm

Sivanandam ji,

Vani J was prolific in Kannada, too.

3 National awards:
APOORVA RAAGANGAL, Tamil, 1975.
SHANKARABHARANAM, 1980.
SWATHI KIRANAM, 1991….Both Telugu.

Filmfare…

Pradeep Ji
Yes- Like many singers in south like P Susheela, S Janaki , P B Sreenivas, S P Balasubramanian, K J Yesudas, Vani sang in all the four Southern languages. The ratio will vary somewhat for each. TM Soundararajan was an exception where he strode the Tamil film scene like a colossus and restricted himself mainly to Tamil. It was amazing that being of Saurasthra origin , his Tamil diction was impeccable.

Sorry-for the disgression–not realted to this thread. Now -a-days I listen more to my native language Tamil-an undiscovered ocean for me!!

17 Sivanandam December 28, 2022 at 6:51 pm

Pradeep Ji
# 15-Yes absolutely true. Many singers of South were popular in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam & Kannada .
Sorry to digress from the main theme of this article but since you mentioned Apoorva Ragangal, I am sending a link to the famous song Ezhu Swarangalukul yethanai padal, ithaya churangathul yethanai kelvi..
(So many songs within the seven notes, as many queries buried within my heart..)

sung by Vani Jayaram, written by Kannadasan & composed by MS Vishwanathan.

There is an anecdote about the famous lyricist Kannadasan ( a stalwart in Tamil film music ) who apparently wrote some 20 odd antaras for this song out of which 5 were selected. Each one is a gist of life’s philosophy.
A single lifetime would not be sufficient to write about his works.

It was unfortunate that the legendary music composer M S Vishwanathan was totally neglected by our government and he did not get a single national / Padma awards. Naushad & MSV were great mutual admirers.
Even those not knowing Tamil may try to listen to this great song in raagamalika.

AK ji
Fitting finale for one of the most low key composers of HFM
You have included a Suman Kalyanpur song from Sahyadri ki ladki , there is a Marathi version of the song from Eiye Marathi che Nagari in the same voice. This song was very popular those days.
Tujhiya botala – Vasant Kanetkar
Incidentally Vasant kanetkar was better known as author of many successful Marathi dramas
https://youtu.be/kJt0ONROtac

Adding to the list of female singers employed by Vasant Desai ,here is a song rendered by Sadhna sargam ( as a child singer) . During the days when DD ruled the roost this song would be played n number of times every day on DD
Suraj ek – Vinay Chandra
https://youtu.be/X0DLOnM7ZuU

Here is one more by Vani jayram from Guddi , I do not recall this being included in the film
Hari Bina kaise jiyu- Gulzar
https://youtu.be/y7Azz7tGCEY
It’s testimony to the eternal strength of the prayer ( not that it needs any) humko man ki shakti that AR Rehman chose this to render his homage to the victims of 26/11(not posting the link as it is not related to the theme)

19 AK December 29, 2022 at 2:26 pm

Mr Muli,
Thanks a lot for adding the Marathi version of Tohri ungli se Krishna re jhar rahi rakt ki dhara. Tujhia botala is also equally melodious. And thanks a lot for adding my eternal favourite Ek chidiya, anek chidiya. Probably, Hai bin kaise jiun re was recorded, but not included in the film. Thanks a lot for adding it.

20 Dr. Rajesh Deshpande December 30, 2022 at 11:25 pm

AKji,
Excellent concluding post as part of the tribute to a maverick composer.

Shobha Gurtu sang for Vasant Desai in couple of Marathi movies.
1. Raja Shiv Chhatrapati 19741.
L – Yogesh (most probably, as he is mentioned in the credits)
Jo chakuon se jo khanjaron se na mare wo naazwale
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ryc-QPwzw_U

2. Dhanya Te Santaji Dhanaji 1968
L – Jagdish Khebudkar
Pahuni pyar bhari muskan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GwAAaCf-2o

21 AK December 31, 2022 at 7:27 pm

Dr Deshpande,
What a great discovery for us. Jo chakuon se na khanjaron se is sung in a traditional mujra-qawwali song. Shobha Gurtu is a perfect choice for such songs.

In a complete contrast she has sung a superb bhajan Pahuni pyar bhari muskan. We have seen her prowess in bhajans, too, in Mharo pranam Baanke Bihariji in Yaman. Some find it even better than Kishori Amonkar’s.

22 Shelomit January 8, 2023 at 4:54 pm

Lovely songs, the lion’s share of which are new to me! Is that Aarti Mukherjee who wrote “Ek Do Teen Gin Bhai Gin” the same who would sing “Do Naina aur Ek Kahani” for “Masoom” so much later? If so, I did not realize that she was a composer as well as a singer.

23 AK January 8, 2023 at 8:39 pm

Shelomit,
Aarti Mukherji’s most memorable song for us is her duet with Rafi, Sara mora kajra churaya tune from the film Do Dil. From the timeline of her career, she has sung Do naina ek kahani. I didn’t know that she was a composer, in which film?

24 Shelomit January 8, 2023 at 10:02 pm

It was my error–I misread your post and thought that she had composed “Ek Do Teen” as well as singing it! Very pleasant light voice she has.
